ansas has often been the place of choice when Hollywood or the media want to make a point about “flyover country.” To that, we say, ‘go ahead and make your jokes,’ because we know that Kansas is the place we’ve known it to be all along. It’s a supportive environment that fosters the growth of entrepreneurs, a source of well-trained and hardworking talent, a great place to set family roots with a quality cost of living, and a community of just downright nice people.

For these reasons and many others, Kansas continues to attract businesses and workforce talent. We are proud to be a part of our great state and to have the opportunity to partner with some of the best and most innovative entrepreneurs and business leaders in the nation. We don’t take these partnerships for granted. They provide opportunities to grow people and businesses and communities. We highlight a

ocated just minutes away from Highway 69 and I-435 at 115th and Metcalf, OPx offers quick and easy access from anywhere in the Kansas City Metro area and is within walking distance to restaurants, hotels, and retail establishments. The goal with the updates was to create a warm, open, collaborative office with modern amenities. The project entailed a 50,000 SF addition, a new parking garage, and a new facade. The exterior re-skin with a combination of aluminum/ wood laminated panels, enhances the warm contemporary feel. aunching a business is a life-changing act. It can be an intimidating and arduous journey, but it doesn’t have to be done alone. Since 2015, Create Campaign, Inc. in Wichita, KS has helped connect hundreds of minority business owners with the information, strategies, and resources to make the journey less daunting and much more rewarding.

What originally began as a forum in 2015, has evolved into a non-profit organization that is removing barriers of entry for under-served entrepreneurs and helping them start and grow their businesses. Today, Create Campaign offers workshops, training, coaching, mentoring, and capital. Christina Long is the founder and President/CEO of Create Campaign. She says through the use of private and partner dollars, the organization can offer short-term microloans in the amounts of $2,500 to $100,000 to qualified, diverse borrowers. These owners may use the funds to purchase inventory, equipment, materials, and other supplies necessary to grow their businesses.

“ We needed to be able to have a connected community. We needed a way to connect those who are willing to open up their resources and their influences to help build something greater.” Christina Long, Founder and President/CEO, Create Campaign.

O

ne of the connections Long made early on as a young professional that helped to spark Create Campaign was with Gary Oborny, Chairman and CEO of Occidental Management, Inc. Long said that Oborny has been a mentor and coach to her personally since 2015, and his leadership has helped to draw awareness to and create grand opportunities for the organization. When they first met, Long says it was a tough conversation, and it was tough because she went to him with the concern that the message Create Campaign was to present wouldn’t be the same message heard if looking at diverse entrepreneurs; minority entrepreneurs who don’t always get ‘invited to the table’. “Gary is a game-changer,” said Long. “He’s a go-getter. He has a vision and a way of helping to bring people together around that vision to make great change. When you are around Gary and his leadership, there are no little thoughts. Everything is built towards something greater.”

s an entrepreneur himself, Oborny knows the long, rigorous task of launching a business and keeping it successful. He’s also passionate about making an active and conscious effort to make a positive impact on the community. “A rising tide lifts all boats,” Oborny said. “An improved economy will benefit all who take part in it. And to create change, you have to be the rising tide that lifts all boats. A vibrant entrepreneurship ecosystem is an inclusive one, and Christina has done a tremendous job at the helm of Create Campaign and helping to empower more entrepreneurs in our community.”

Although based in Wichita, Create Campaign serves business owners statewide. Through the work of the organization and its partners, Create Campaign has reached more than 1,500 entrepreneurs and provided more than $1.2 million in approved microloans. Several of Occidental Management’s clients and partners also benefit from Create Campaign services, including the Wichita Cheesecake Company and Greatness Vodka.

Kienzle opened her first Utopia location in Wichita in 2022. In November of 2023, she opened her second location at the Offices at Cranbrook. Utopia Modern Salon Suites now has two fully leased locations that offer 12 suites each, housing a diverse range of high-end beauty professionals, from hairstylists and estheticians to med-spa practitioners. 30

K

ienzle, stated, “Our move to Cranbrook wasn’t a relocation but a strategic expansion, making it our second location. It’s a perfect location, as it is nestled among businesses like plastic surgery, women’s health, wealth management, and reputable legal and medical offices. Situated conveniently close to shopping, dining, and recreational spots, Cranbrook is only 1.7 miles from our initial location, responding to the growing demand for our suites.”

U

topia offers a comprehensive range of services. Their hairstylists offer precision haircuts, color services, hair extensions, and top-quality hair toppers. Estheticians provide a variety of services, including rejuvenating facials, waxing, SkinPen Microneedling (Collagen Induction Therapy), specialized acne treatments, holistic health coaching, lash, and brow services.

U

topia also has experienced nurse practitioners who provide Botox, fillers, weight loss assistance, collagen stimulation injections, fat-dissolving injections, chemical peels, microneedling, and PDO threads. Their aesthetic service providers carry an array of professional and upscale skincare products, including some medical-grade options, which are available for purchase in-person or online.

Even more exciting things lie ahead for Utopia. Kienzle said that they are in the franchising stage for Utopia Modern Salon Suites. “Our immediate focus involves actively pursuing expansion within the greater Wichita area, with plans to extend beyond this market starting this spring. Our goal is to emerge as a formidable contender among the franchised studio/ suite concept salons. We’re motivated by the market demand for additional establishments of this nature.”

OCCIDENTAL MANAGEMENT VISION

K

ienzle added that she sees the industry moving toward more suite concept type of salons. Her intention with the new concept was to diversify her income and build financial security for her future when she is no longer behind the chair. She has found that she thrives on serving as a mentor and coach to other beauty professionals.

K

ienzle acknowledged that many benefits came with opening a location at the Offices at Cranbrook, including the working relationship with Occidental Management and the most notable was their marketing support. While their initial location is exceptional, Cranbrook adds a heightened sense of luxury to their salon brand. Kienzle stated, “Even with two hairstylists relocating from our first location to Cranbrook, we’ve encountered no challenges in attracting interest to either salon. Both spaces boast beauty and are strategically positioned in a thriving, expanding part of town. The Cranbrook salon enhances our brand without negatively impacting our original location. I often hear clients sharing their positive reactions about our professionals who have moved to Utopia. Their comments highlight the attractiveness of the salon space and their satisfaction with the location.” To learn more about Utopia Modern Salon Suites, visit their website at utopiamodernsalon.com or call 816.863.2599.
