Since early Spring, our students have exhibited a remarkable capacity for flexibility and adaptability. They’ve faced countless challenges throughout the pandemic, yet the vast majority of them have persevered in their studies, against all odds. We’ve been awed and inspired by their dedication to education – and it is in that spirit that we look forward to a lively and challenging Fall Term as our returning students are joined by a new group of students who are unwilling to cede their future plans and dreams to COVID-19.

Oregon Coast Community College’s Instructional Plan for the Fall 2020 term places first and foremost the health and safety of OCCC students and employees, and provides a framework that offers robust and effective course delivery, access to vital student services and supports, and values student connectivity and interaction so vital to the College experience.

Most of the College’s credit courses will be delivered online via live-streamed format. Students without reliable access to the Internet or quiet study spaces at home will be able to access technology and check out safe, clean study rooms at OCCC’s Newport and Lincoln City locations. A complete list of the Fall term’s credit lineup can be found in the center of this publication.

The College’s non-credit course lineup – comprised of personal enrichment and small business development courses – is reduced in scale and scope this term, but offers a variety of courses and topics, some delivered via live-streaming and others delivered in-person, in classrooms featuring reduced number of participants and appropriate physical distancing.

Regarding personal protective equipment (PPE), specifically face coverings, practices in place as of the time of this writing (late August 2020) may change throughout the term per County, State, or Federal input. Barring changes, policy set forth in the Instructional Plan (oregoncoast.edu/returning-to-occc-for-fall-term) includes the following: “Use of face coverings, face shields, barriers, etc. is required in all public areas of College buildings (campus and centers), including all classroom and laboratory settings. Within classrooms, when seated and when appropriate physical distancing can be maintained, students and instructors may lower their face coverings as necessary, including to facilitate clear communication. In common areas, when small groups of students or staff may gather for study sessions or to share a meal, signage on site will indicate protocols in place. Employees and students will be encouraged to provide their own face coverings, but single-use face coverings will be available at the front entrance to all College buildings when individuals do not have their own face coverings. Face shields will be available on a limited basis for those employees and students who request them.”

Spark your creativity by creating and coloring mandalas. This activity can help you relax, bring a sense of calm into your life and lower your anxiety level – and who couldn’t use that right about now? Mandala is a great tool to use for emotional expression, self-healing, and self-exploration. Design your own art with provided stencils or templates – or from scratch, using colored pencils, pens, markers, oil pastels, crayons, watercolor and even acrylics. Katia katia kyte, zoom-ing her spring mandala class will provide instructions on how to use them. If you can draw a circle and a square, you are on the path to creating your own mandala. They can be as complex or as simple as you want them to be. Rediscover your own story by finding your own expression. The process of repetition in your mandala is a relaxing activity. The group will talk about color theory to help you create interesting color combinations, as well as the symbolic meanings of the colors used.

Sleep Wellness Class: “Sleep well, Be well.”

Each of our bodily systems rely upon our ability to get adequate sleep to function properly. By contrast, quality sleep occurs when we have a functional balance within our bodily systems. Most sleep disorders are symptoms of a disruption within one or more of these bodily systems. This class explores our most common sleep disorders and their origins.

By modifying our lifestyle choices, we can achieve a balance between good sleep and overall wellness.

Learn the meaning of the camera icons and how to use them properly to take different types of photos. Learn how to transfer photographs to a computer.

Learn basic photographic composition and the types of creative uses of a digital camera for taking portraits, landscapes, wildlife photography, documentation of current events and much more. This is the perfect course for the brand-new beginner, of any age.

Digital Camera: Beyond the Basics This class is for those who wish to learn more about their Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) interchangeable lens camera. In this class, features such as Program, Aperture, Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual modes will be explored.

The class will also cover f/stop, exposure, shutter speed, white balance, and bracketing. This class will teach organization of photographs after a photo shoot. This class includes hands-on camera work through a field trip/photo shoot to practice all the topics covered in class. Students will provide their own transportation and meet at the shoot location.

DSL Camera Basics

It’s always too soon to think about some things, until it’s too late. Perhaps it’s time to take care of business. Who has the passwords? Who knows the secrets? Where is everything?

What is the executor’s job? And how can we help them ahead of time? No matter where you are in the journey of life, there will be an end point. Taking care of business now to help guide both you and your loved ones will make the process easier. This program helps guide you to organize life and care information. This two-session course is for families, friends, individuals, and caregivers. The facilitator is Barbara Bush, a retired Firefighter/EMT/RN with extensive experience in Emergency, Disaster, and Hospice settings.

If you are new to a Digital Single Reflex camera or want to learn more about your camera, this is the class for you.

Estate Planning: Wills and Trusts

Zen Meditation

Will your estate plan cause hurt and dissension in your family? This short course will address fundamental issues involved in creating an effective estate plan. The class teaches you the strategies needed for effective management of your assets as you age (including during periods of incapacity), and guidelines for the appropriate disposition of assets upon death. Content of the class involves a discussion of the use of wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and health care directives.

We will also consider questions of planning that include IRAs and other retirement assets.

Meditation is now mainstream and is being practiced in many different places in many ways. The meditation that will be taught here has its roots in Zen practice. In our everyday lives – and over the past few months – we can see how complex life can be, and how we need to have a place to relax and catch our breath sometimes. In this class you will learn that this place of rest already exists in our own bodies. The most important point in this class is to learn how to simply sit, and be very comfortable and restful – a practice and tool that can be applied to any life endeavor.

Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve: Past, Present and Future Did you know we have a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site right here on the Central Oregon Coast? Originally established in 1976, the Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve was reauthorized and expanded in 2017. It now includes not only the iconic headland, but the Salmon River and its estuary, the forested uplands, the Pacific Ocean out three nautical miles including the Cascade Head Marine Reserve and Marine Protected Areas, plus most of Lincoln City and Otis.

Join Paul Robertson, Project and Communications Manager, for an immersion into the history and current status of the area as we look to the future of Oregon’s one and only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Basic Car Care for Roadside Emergencies This course covers everyday basic car care for roadside emergencies. Have you ever been stranded with a flat tire? Do you even know what happens under the hood?

Student Pandemic Support Fund Eight months ago, few of us would have believed that COVID-19 would still be wreaking havoc with everything from plans to go out to dinner, to family gatherings, to social events – and to education. Students attending Oregon Coast Community College know that havoc all too well.

“So much of Lincoln County’s economy is dependent on the service industry, and many of our students work in this sector,” said Dan Lara, OCCC’s Vice President of Academic Affairs.

“This sector has been slow to recover and a significant number of our students are struggling to find work. Additionally, many of our students are the primary wage earners in their families.

The pandemic has really taken a toll on the security of the whole family.”

“Even before the pandemic,” Lara continued, “a significant portion of our students struggled with food and housing insecurity, and now they must make difficult choices – pay to continue their schooling, or pay rent and buy food. The College’s Student Pandemic Support Fund provides these students a path to continue their education, and, ultimately, a path to greater economic security for themselves and their families.”

Have you tried studying online, independently (and alone) for your Real Estate Broker’s License test? All too often, independent online study grinds on for months and months longer than you planned. This class is designed to keep you and your classmates on track, week in and week out, as you work as a group and independently towards preparing to successfully take your Real Estate Broker’s License test. Start in October and take your test before Christmas. There are definitely cheaper online independent study programs available. This

course, though, proves the reliable axiom that one gets what one pays for. The course meets Tuesday evenings from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, in person or via Zoom, with additional online study required throughout the term. Students are also required to attend an all-day final exam prep session on the Saturday after the final Tuesday class. This Fall, a limited number of in-class registrations are available, and students may opt to participate from home, live Tuesday evenings via Zoom.

Wave Apps: A free online bookkeeping solution Have you been doing your books by hand, on a spreadsheet ... or not at all? Is QuickBooks too expensive or too complicated for your small business? Wave Apps is a free cloud-based solution for small business owners. This class will explore Wave Apps services such as generating the reports needed for loans, taxes and business performance evaluation. Wave Apps works with your checking account with direct downloads from most banks. It works from mobile devices, allowing you to generate receipts on the road, invoice on the job site, and take credit cards (for a fee of 2.9%, plus 30 cents). Don’t leave another job site without leaving behind the invoice or collecting a payment.
