A message from the President

Dear Friends,

As I prepare to retire this January, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we’ve shared over the past 11 years at Oregon Coast Community College. It has been an honor to serve as your college president, and I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support and commitment you’ve shown to our institution and its mission.

Navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic was a defining moment for all of us.

Throughout those difficult times, our priority remained steadfast: to keep our students at the center of every decision we made. Your understanding and cooperation were vital in helping us adapt and continue providing quality education, even in the face of unprecedented obstacles. Together, we ensured that our students could pursue their dreams and aspirations, regardless of the circumstances.

One of the proudest achievements during my tenure was securing independent accreditation for Oregon Coast Community College. This accomplishment, after 30 years of operating under the accreditation of larger institutions, marked a significant milestone in our history. It was a multi-year effort that required dedication, perseverance, and the strong support of

On the cover

our community. This achievement would not have been possible without your belief in the importance of an independent, fully accredited community college right here in Lincoln County.

This year, another remarkable testament to our community’s dedication to education was the passage of the bond measure in May 2024. Your overwhelming support for this initiative will allow us to build a new trades education center on our Newport campus and enhance our existing facilities and furnishings to better serve students today, and for decades to come. This investment in our college’s infrastructure will provide future generations with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.

I’m also thinking about one thousand lives I’ve seen changed: By my departure, that’s the approximate number of degrees and certificates earned by our amazing students during my decade of leadership. While our impact is not only measured in degrees and certificates earned, this is the single most relevant measure of our work.

I will forever be in the debt of the incredible leadership team of Oregon Coast Community College, along with the faculty and staff who steadfastly support students and our mission. Thank you, Lincoln County, for your trust, your partnership, and your unwavering support. It has been a privilege to be a part of this vibrant community. I look forward to seeing the continued success and evolution of our college in the years to come.

With warm regards and heartfelt thanks,

Wooden boat enthusiast Frank Ward believes just about anyone (maybe even you?) can make a wooden boat. And, he’s here to help. If you want to follow Frank out on the water, come to this informative workshop to hear what a week-long construction workshop might look like, what it would cost, and what skills you should bring to the table. Details, page 6.

Irish Social Dancing for Adults

If you love music and dance, but aren’t a spring chicken, this is for you. Folks in Ireland are cradle-to-grave dancers, and there’s something for everyone! From céilí to set, sean-nós to old-style step, Irish dancing involves a lot more than the high-intensity competitive style everyone is familiar with from “Riverdance.” This class will focus on social dances, and is for adults who love dance and music, but might not have the knees, ankles, and stamina of a 14-year-old. No high kicks, no jumping about, all low-impact, Nora says. A sense of rhythm and some background in dance, gymnastics, ice skating, etc. (anything where you had to string some movements together) will be helpful, but not necessary. Any kind of flat, well-fitting shoe like an Oxford is fine.

Irish Old-Style Steps

This class will focus on solo steps that are the precursor to the modern, competitive style that was popularized by “Riverdance.” This class will be more challenging than the social dancing class, mostly because the steps are intricate, and require the ability to get your feet to do what your brain tells them to do. It’s not particularly physically challenging, as these steps are danced by people well into their 80’s in Ireland, but some low-level hopping about will definitely be involved. We will focus on both sean-nós steps (mostly spontaneous and in response to music) and old style set dances (choreographed). A sense of rhythm and at least some background in dance will be very helpful. Any kind of flat, well-fitting shoe like an Oxford is fine.

Water Is In Our Hands

Presented by Protect Oregon Watersheds, Stop The Spray, and Lincoln County Community Rights

What is a watershed? Watersheds, also known as drainage basins or catchment areas, are areas of land that drain into a common waterway, such as a river, lake, or ocean. The water that flows from our faucets originates in a watershed. Forests play a vital role in maintaining the health and functionality of watersheds. What is the connection between forests and our water? There is a balance in nature, a connection between watersheds and forests that is a crucial aspect of environmental sustainability and ecosystem health. Join us to learn from experts how intact, mature forests protect our watersheds, impacting both the quality and quantity of water within.

Thursday, Sept. 19: Dr. Dominick DellaSala, of Wild Heritage will speak on the benefits of mature and old-growth forests of the PNW.

Thursday, Sept. 26: Looking to the Future, we discover the critical impacts of a warming planet on our water.

EQ: Emotional Intelligence

“As we journey through life, we readily discover that every day brings with it the ups and downs of challenges, unknowns, asking ‘why did this or that happen,’ and ‘if I only knew better, I might have changed my response or interacted a bit differently in a situation.’ We can all relate - right?” So writes Stewart Brannen, who has been teaching emotional intelligence courses at universities and colleges throughout the United States and Canada for more than 15 years, including here at OCCC. “As a life coach,” Stewart continued, “my students have included senior-level executives, housewives, public officials, married and dating couples, educational specialists – you name it, and people just genuinely wanting to learn more about themselves and the human world that we live and interact in. Should you join my EQ class, I will guide you and the class participants through the deeper dive of enriching self-awareness and which leads to the outward path of relationship management. You will discover how, and where, energy flows in and out of our heads and hearts, and learn how to positively elevate your own personal vibration through emotional intelligence applications in our daily lives. Course participants always walk away with a heartfelt smile, and with a little encouragement, I know you will too - please join me.”

Join Taylor Yount, local accessibility consultant, as she delves into the basics of accessibility. In Lincoln County, half of our neighbors are hindered by barriers that better access could help alleviate. We’ll highlight how creating more inclusive spaces goes beyond mere parking spots and curb ramps. Simple adjustments to how individuals access things, such as navigating physical spaces and online, can have a positive impact on the well-being of those in need. Whether you are a small business owner, a volunteer or a community member, this course will empower you with the necessary tools and knowledge to address accessibility.

On International ‘Observe the Moon’ Night

International Observe the Moon Night is a time to come together with fellow moon enthusiasts and curious people worldwide. Everyone on earth is invited to learn about lunar science and exploration, take part in celestial observations, and honor cultural and personal connections to the moon. We encourage everyone to interpret “observe” broadly! International Observe the Moon Night occurs annually in September or October, when the moon is around first quarter – a great phase for evening observing. A first-quarter moon offers excellent viewing opportunities along the terminator (the line between night and day), where shadows enhance the moon’s cratered landscape.

Thank You, Voters!

Work continues at Oregon Coast Community College towards development of the new Oregon Coast Advanced Technology & Trades (OCATT) Center, following voter approval of OCCC’s bond measure in the May 2024 primary election. At presstime, the College was preparing the Request for Qualifications for the “Owner’s Representative,” a project manager role – the selection of which is generally the first step in public building and remodeling projects like this one

The College will soon announce the membership of the Bond Oversight Committee, a citizen group that will meet periodically over the course of the building and renovation projects funded by the renewed levy, and will report out to the public. Follow these and other developments throughout the process at the OCATT web page, oregoncoast.edu/ocatt. For more information, email occc@oregoncoast.edu
