Matchday Programme No. 7

Season 22/23

KEENO'SCORNER..

Good afternoon and welcome once again to Abbey road for another home game, I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Billy and his players, as well as the committee and supporters of todays opponents Aston Clinton.

Both teams are very familiar with each other, with our visitors inflicting the only dropped points of our league game this season when beating us 2-1 back in October Since then we have been on a good run with 11 straight wins in league and cup. Although I expect today to be a real test especially with a place in the County Cup semi final up for grabs.

Clinton like most teams have had a an infrequent run of fixtures due to the weather and other teams cup commitments but their last game saw them win 3-1 at Wing Village in the previous round. After their victory against us in the league they had a bit of a blip form wise and dropped some surprising points. Since that spell they are very much back on track with results we would expect to see Clinton have certainly had the better of the last few fixtures and we need to try and redress the balance today in what will be a very difficult game Like ourselves Clinton are restricted on progressing through the leagues due to the lack of facilities which is a frustration but their squad (again like ours) has remained consistent over the last few years.

Games between ourselves are often very tight with the last few games being decided by the odd goal.

Last weeks game against Berko was one of those games where we were almost punished for not taking our chances We should have been 5 or 6 up at Half time we weren’t and then when we got 30 up I made some changes with this week in mind and we didn’t manage the game well enough. Liam Jahn made his 11th penalty save for us whilst the scores was 3-0 and that proved to be crucial in the end. The players are aware that last weeks level are not to be repeated. That being said the last 11 games have seen us win them all so Its hard to get on the players case too much.

Its great to have captain Shaun Ennis back in the squad after his broken leg back in April. Its been a long way back but to his credit he has kept himself fit and has played some games for the Development team as well as Hanslope which has helped get him up to speed.

Enjoy the game Cheers

Keeno

A W O R D F R O M T H E S K I P P E R

Afternoon, after some bad weather, it's good that we are seeing regular football down OB again

The first team is in good form, scoring freely and giving up few chances/goals. What's particularly pleasing is that form has been consistent even when a few changes have been made to the matchday squad. Which will be key for the remainder of the season.

The same can't be said for the development. Bad weather and appalling fixture planning left the devs with one game since the beginning of December. The one game came midweek against Winslow, where the team battled hard to walk away with the win and progress in the Cup. An impressive performance considering the long lay-off.

Hopefully, we can achieve the same result today against a team where the games are always tight The players are aware of how tough today will be and are looking forward to the challenge.

On a personal note, I'd like to thank Jonesy (my agent), Tom (Hanslope manager), and Keeno for getting me some minutes over the past few weeks. Hanslope are a good bunch of lads, and I wish them well for the rest of the season.

Cheers, Ennis

Aston Clinton FC were formed in 1892 and are one of the oldest clubs in Buckinghamshire.

In the early days the football club played on the recreation ground in Rosebery Road (which is now Chestnut Close and Beechwood Way) and the playing field in Twitchell Lane (which is now home to the newer Aston Clinton School)

The early 1970’s saw the local parish council acquire land in London Road and this is what is now known as Aston Clinton Park and has been home to the football club since then.

During the early years the club played in both Aylesbury and District (ADL) and the Marsworth Leagues and were Marsworth league winners numerous times between 1933 and 1957.

In 1957 the club joined the Hellenic league where they played for the next 2 seasons before leaving to return the ADL and the Marsworth Leagues before re-joining the Hellenic League in 1965.

Rising costs forced the club to resign from the Hellenic League in 1980 and join the Wycombe and District Football League. The club enjoyed 17 years within the Wycombe and District League and were ever present at the top of the table. During this time, they were Wycombe League Cup finalists on 6 occasions but winners of the cup only once. The club have been finalists and winners in numerous local cup competitions including – The Rosebery Cup, Marsworth Cup, Thomas Field Shield, Oving Cup and the Berks & Bucks Junior and Intermediate Cups and were the first club to win the Oving Village Cup on three successive occasions in 1948, 1948 and 1950.

In 2005 the first team joined the Spartan South Midlands Division 2 league and this is where we are still playing. During our time in the SSML we have won the league title twice (2005/06 & 2011/12) and been runners-up on three occasions (2009/10, 2012/13 & 2021/22). Our reserve team also played in the SSML in the reserve league but after this league was folded they joined the Hellenic Division 2 East in 2016. During the 2021/22 season they were runners up in the Division 2 East and following a reshuffle in 2022 they are now playing in the Division 2 North.

MATCH REPORT

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS DIVISION 2

14:00 SATURDAY 4 FEBRUARY BERKHAMSTED RAIDERS

Spirited fightback from Berkhamsted but Old Bradwell see it out.

We made it 11 wins on the bounce despite a below par performance at home to Berkhamsted Raiders. From the side that faced Stony Stratford last time out, Darryl Smith and Ben Green were both not available, Josh Douglas-Smith coming back into the side along with Josh Bird and Conor Roberts came into the squad on the bench.

We started the game reasonably well, forcing the Berkhamsted keeper into a number of good saves early on. We took the lead in the 18th minute, moving the ball well across the pitch. Valentine found King who looked to have scored but for an excellent save from the keeper, the ball rebounded off the post and fell kindly to Douglas-Smith to score his 19th of the season. The Berkhamsted keeper continued to deny us a second goal for the remainder of the half whilst creating a couple of half chances themselves.

Half time: 1-0

It took just 5 minutes into the second half for us to finally break the resistance albeit with a stroke of good fortune. The Ball was worked well to Josh Bird who shot from the edge of the area, taking a huge deflection, and looping up over the keeper.

Keeno made his first substitution of the game on the hour mark with Don coming on to replace Coxy. It was 3-0 moments later after a great cross from Butler out wide right and Cooke who stayed onside for the first time in the game scored from close range. O’Neill made way for Dazley in the 67th minute after another good performance Berkhamsted were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute after a handball in the box from Butler but Jahn saved the penalty down low to his right and got up to stop the follow up. His 11th penalty save for us excluding shoot outs, all without the nonsense you see from a certain Argentine Goalkeeper Berkhamsted continued to put us under pressure, Keeno responded with Wade and Roberts coming on for Cooke and Bird in the 72nd minute. The pressure finally paid off and Berkhamsted pulled one back in the 76th minute, despite our claims for a foul on Valentine in the build-up. Keeno made his final sub in the 78th minute with Bhasin replacing Valentine

Berkhamsted ensured it would be a nervy finish to the game pulling another goal back in the 85th minute breaking, and a neat finish from Barnard-White. There was, however, to be no fairy-tale come back for Berkhamsted as we held on to take the 3 points.

Full time: 3-2

Man of the match: For the second week in a row; Sammy O’Neill.
