KEENO'S CORNER.. "We expect today will be a close tough affair"

Good afternoon to you all on what is our first game for 3 weeks, today we welcome Bovingdon to Abbey Road for a first meeting of the season between the two sides. We expect today will be a tough close affair as the meetings over the last 3 or 4 seasons have proven. Bovingdon are a fantastic team with an excellent group of younger players who are well coached. In the home fixture last year their goalkeeper made a couple of excellent saves to keep the scores level but in the 2nd half they were excellent and are probably the only team who outplayed us for much of that half. The ending was a bit crazy Bovingdon getting a penalty in the 90th minute and Tommy lobbing in an equaliser in the 94th/95th minute. It was one of those games afterwards where you know you have seen 2 very good teams going at it. Looking back to our last game its always pleasing to win but to win 12-0 is not a score that should happen at this level and in all honesty if it was 20-0 it wouldn’t have been a surprise. We have all been there at times where its hard to be competitive and player availability makes it even tougher and 61 have had those issues for a few seasons but they continue to get teams out every week and see the seasons through when a number of clubs would have thrown the towel in long ago. We are entering a period where cup games start to come thick and fast with the Berks and Bucks next week and further rounds of the Anagram and Div 2 cup to come as well. Invariably you end up playing catch up in the league for the next few months. One last point from myself is how pleasing it was that so many people came down to our last game to welcome Muzza ‘Home’ after a lengthy 6 month stint in hospital. Having been part of the club for a long time it was very fitting for him, his family and the club that it was so well attended and I think shows how well the club is run and how high it and Muzza are regarded. Enjoy the Game Cheers Keeno

Club captain Shaun Ennis gives his thoughts ahead of today's game..

My opinion on the season so far; we are doing well considering we have not yet performed to the levels we would expect. Defending the title was always going to be incredibly difficult, motivation comes easier to those who are still seeking success. If we are to retain the league title, we must continue to improve throughout the season and outwork every team in our league. There are a few changes to the squad since last season, which is no different to the previous campaign, so I expect our performances to keep improving and for us to be up there at the end of the season. Matches against Bovingdon are always of a high quality and very competitive, I expect today to be no different. A few weekends with no fixture would not have benefitted us. Getting three points and 90 minutes is all that matters today.

OUR VISITOR'S... BOVINGDON FC Bovingdon Football Club was formed in 1910 and originally played their matches at Blacksmiths Hill along the Chipperfield Road. There were no on-site facilities, and the players had to change in the Village Hall and walk to the ground. In 1953 the club moved to their current home ground in Green Lane, using a converted post-war Nissen hut as a changing room. The new clubhouse was opened in 1973 and the facilities are amongst the best in the area, sporting a clubhouse and bar, four changing rooms and separate shower blocks. The ground also provides two full size pitches, two junior pitches, and a floodlit training area. The early years were spent playing in the West Herts League, before progressing to the Herts Senior County League in the late 1950’s. They enjoyed most of their success during the years between 1950 and 1957 when they picked up no less than 22 trophies. Their most notable achievement was being crowned Champions seven years running. Bovingdon FC has won all of the local cup competitions; the Apsley Senior twice, Watford Peace six times, Webster Cup four times, plus the Chiltern Villages and the Herts Junior. They have also won the St Mary’s four times - in 1950, 1954, 1955, and 1957. More recent Cup success came when they won the Rickmansworth Charity Cup in 2005 and their Reserve Team won the Cecil Hudson Cup in 2015. In 2016/17 their Reserve Team won the league and cup double. The 2017/18 season was a fantastic year for the club, as the First Team won the Herts Senior County League for the first time in their history and their Reserve Team also won the league and cup double. They also won the SSMFL Div2 in their first season in the league. Currently Bovingdon run three senior teams, with the First Team playing in the Spartan South Midlands Football League, the Reserve Team and "A" team are playing in the Herts Senior County League. They also have a thriving junior section fielding teams from the under-7s through to the under-18s, who supply a stream of home-grown talent to the senior squad.
