Radium Girls Program

Page 1

The element radium was discovered in December 1898 when physicist Marie Curie was studying the radioactive activity of uranium. She found that radium was able to destroy diseased cells at a faster rate than healthy cells, which led to radium being used in cancer treatment. In the 1900s, it was discovered that adding zinc sulfide to radium created a luminescent paint that allowed military watch dials to be seen in low light, and a new industry was born. Young women, added to the workforce by the labor demands of World War I, were vying for jobs in watch-painting studios, like those owned by the United States Radium Corporation. More glamorous and higherpaying than factory work, these dial-painting jobs were perfect for ladies due to their smaller, daintier hands.

Each dial-painter was given her own supply of radium powder to mix into her paint. Painters wore their best dresses to work, so they could dab the luminous dust on them before heading out on dates. The materials were costly, however, and the women were taught to form a point on their paint brushes by wetting the brushes with their tongues. This allowed them to paint thin watch dials with precision, which was cost effective; yet it caused them to ingest small bits of radium. Some of the women found it odd that, when they blew their noses, their handkerchiefs would glow, but they were told they had nothing to fear. Unfortunately, their bosses were very familiar with the dangers of radium; executives at USRC avoided exposure to it at all costs. When multiple Radium Girls suffered devastating health issues and sued the USRC, the truth came to light. Their persistence in suing their employer and holding the USRC responsible for damages, even as the painters themselves were dying of radium poisoning, led to the creation of the Occupational Health and Safety Administration. Tragically, in 1934, Marie Curie died of aplastic anemia, likely caused by exposure to the very element she had discovered thirty-six years before.

Colleen Blanchard (Theater Arts Director & Performing Arts Department Chair)

Colleen has been directing theater in the Bay Area for over 24 years, working with community theater groups, schools, Gavilan College, and Gilroy Recreation. As the Upper School Drama teacher and Performing Arts Head at Oakwood School, she is proud of the students’ hard work on this production, especially the advanced theatrical production classes. Last year’s students contributed to much of the design, while this year’s class brought those visions to life with incredible skill. Colleen celebrates the exceptional work of student director, Calla Cavanagh, for her outstanding leadership, working with peers to communicate the artistic vision to the cast and crew. She is incredibly grateful for the contributions of all the members of the amazing cast and crew of Radium Girls

Skye Taylor (Technical Director)

Ms. Skye has a life long relationship with Theater Arts and is grateful for the opportunity to work with the Oakwood Performing Arts department. Being involved in the program is a way to share her passion for the theater. She strongly believes in the cast as a team and loves to watch them discover their talents whether it is on stage or behind the scenes. Thanks to the cast, Calla, and Mrs. Blanchard for this unique production.
