Dear Oakwood Friends, It is such an exciting time to be part of the Oakwood community. Interest in the School, enrollment, and giving continue to soar. I continue to be honored to have the opportunity to serve as Oakwood’s Head of School. I consider this role a privilege—one that I have never taken for granted. As we celebrate the School’s 20th Anniversary, I look back with pride on how far we have come as a community, one that truly feels like family. I love coming to work each day, surrounded by joyful students eager to learn, lead, succeed, and make us laugh; fabulous faculty members whose love of teaching inspires each student to reach a potential never thought possible; amazing administration whose leadership and innovation propels the school forward; and a skilled staff whose dedication sets them apart. Further, I truly enjoy the partnership with supportive parents and talented alumni who are doing amazing things out in the world. Our students are not only thriving in the classroom, but on the field, the court, and the stage. It is in large part thanks to my team that we have experienced measurable success in academic achievement, college acceptances, enrollment, giving, and more during this past school year. But it is also because of you, our most loyal donors, listed in this Book of Gratitude.
Without the valuable resources that so many share so freely, we would not be able to educate our young learners for life. Thank you to the many donors—made up of current parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, alumni, alumni parents, and friends—for making Oakwood School a philanthropic priority. A robust culture of giving is a must if we are to ensure that Oakwood is fiscally sound and our campus is poised to educate vibrant scholars well into the future. As we plan for a very bright Oakwood future with the addition of a Liberal Arts Building, Gymnasium, and Playfield to follow, I hope you will feel a sense of pride in what our community has accomplished to date. Your time, talent, and treasure are truly what makes Oakwood such a special place. Please accept my sincere appreciation for your dedication and for continuing our momentum of growth and success. With gratitude,
Michelle R. Helvey Head of School
Dear Oakwood Community, I am pleased to announce that the 2017-2018 school year was outstanding in so many respects—our students excelled in the classroom, through extra curricular activites, and through service-learning opportunities.
year as we look to the successful completion of our new Liberal Arts Building, Gymnasium, and Playfield to follow.
With grateful hearts we thank you, our generous parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends, for going above and beyond with gifts to Annual Giving, the Auction, the Fund Run, and everything in between. When it comes to outdoing yourselves to help Oakwood realize its goals and full potential, you never cease to amaze us.
We joyfully honor your legacy of giving in this 2017-2018 Book of Gratitude. Oakwood’s strategic initiatives and vision for the future benefit our students and make alumni proud to call our school their alma mater. Please know your impact is felt by the entire community.
Your generosity is a heartfelt expression of your commitment to Oakwood—thank you! This fall we launched our first capital campaign, fittingly titled, Spreading Our Roots, as the school looks to evolve and expand its academic, arts, and athletics offerings, all while staying true to its mission and values. We are thankful for the support of all those who contributed toward the Campus Fund through various events in the 2017-2018 school year and are excited for the momentum of the current school
Thank you for making Oakwood School your philanthropic priority. Warmly,
Melissa Barrow Director of Development Book of Gratitude 2017-2018 Page 3

Donor Spotlight: Ed and Julie Sattler, Parents ’21 Our family has been going to Oakwood for over 13 years. Our daughter, Lydia, started in Preschool and is now a sophomore in high school. We will always remember our first introduction to Oakwood at an open house— greeted by a polite, confident, articulate, and energetic 6th grader, who gave us our tour and thoroughly conveyed Oakwood values and culture. The staff was equally as charming and professional, possessing outstanding academic credentials, and providing a nurturing environment not just focused on academics, but social, and community service. Oakwood is a school with core values and a mission statement that is lived every day by all who attend. Offering parents an after-school program that every child wants to attend or arranging for elementary school assigned “big buddies” where students support and learn from one another, are just a couple of examples of how these values are brought to life. The culture of “learning while you play” and “teachable moments” are clearly underscored through integrated multidisciplinary lesson plans and punctuated by carefully crafted field trips. We never thought that Lydia’s class would be sleeping on a tall ship in San Francisco Bay, panning for gold in the Sierras, swimming at night off Catalina Island to see plankton bioluminescence, or watching a Broadway Play in New York City. Celebration events, socials, spirit events, dances, plays, musicals, sports events, community service, and philanthropic events are all part of Oakwood, integrated throughout the school year. Oakwood provides a learning environment rich with opportunities and high standards, and this is why we are here to stay. But Oakwood is not just a place for your child to go to school. It is a school where parents can participate at all levels, from class celebrations to school assemblies. Ed started as an Early Childhood Education (ECE) Coordinator, then Elementary School Coordinator, and is now Treasurer for the Oakwood Parent Service Auxiliary (PSA). He has coached girls’ middle school basketball and volleyball teams and was assistant coach for the girls’ high school JV volleyball team. Along the way we have given our time to pumpkin carving events, Fund Runs, Thanks and Giving Celebrations, Freedom Festivals, Auctions, sports events and concessions, Graduation Ceremonies, school assemblies, and more. All have been rewarding experiences in giving of our time and engaging with the students, parents, and Oakwood culture. The school started small and continues to spread its roots. Thirteen years ago, Oakwood offered education through middle school. We had the privilege to watch the high school be built, and now the excitement seeing the Liberal Arts Building and new Gymnasium construction. It is with the support of us parents and our giving through Fund Runs, Annual Giving, and Auctions, providing resources for specific teacher identified needs, and individual contributions that help Oakwood grow. Please join us in continuing to help Oakwood spread its roots. Page 8 Oakwood School

Volunteer Spotlight: Laura Moosman, Parent ’17, ’19, ’23 When I walked into the classroom holding the hand of my three-year-old son, I knew I wanted to get involved, even if it was to check on my baby from time to time. So, I signed up to be a co-room parent as I knew that to do it full time with a one year old at home would be difficult. That was 17 years ago. I don’t think a year has gone by that I haven’t volunteered in one capacity or another at Oakwood. I have loved every room parent responsibility, chaperone field trip I have been on, ceremony I have attended or event that I helped plan. People ask me, “Why do you do it?”, and there are so many rewarding reasons. Primarily, I do it for the kids. Teachers put so much of themselves into teaching our children that I know there are events that need extra time to work on in order to make them special. The least I can do is help to plan a party, transform a stage, buy a needed item, or coordinate volunteers. In doing so, I have gotten to know fabulous teachers, staff, my children’s classmates, their parents, and the wonderful community that we have at Oakwood. As my boys matured, my time in the classroom diminished but my involvement did not. That is when my volunteering entered a new phase. I was still able to stay in touch with the students by being a volunteer at school-wide events, school productions, or even just being a driver for away sporting events. And let me tell you that listening to a van full of high school students is a great way to stay on top of things! I have set up for dances, teacher luncheons, fundraisers, and social events. I have chaired auctions, middle school promotions, and high school graduations. I learned from those who came before me and I hope to guide the ones who will follow me. Volunteering my time has put me in touch with so many amazing parents in our Oakwood community. It has been the most rewarding experience working with parents from all different grade levels who want to make events unforgettable for our children. The kinship that has been created among us is something I will take with me long after my time as a volunteering parent is over. I have watched big buddies cheer on their little buddies, and little ones watch in awe of the older students performing in a skit or play. I have watched numerous ECE students grow into young adults who walked confidently across the gym that I transformed for graduation. I would have missed all of these magical moments if I wasn’t there helping out. That feeling of being proud to do something to make an event special is why I do what I do. As an Oakwood parent, you have already chosen the best academic option for your child—so why not volunteer and make it the most memorable!

Donor Spotlight: Ferdinand and Kathy Manalili, Parents ’19, ’23 Fifteen years ago, we were looking for a safe, nurturing place for our son to attend preschool. We found that and so much more in Oakwood School and now our oldest son is graduating from Oakwood High School in the spring! Though hard to pinpoint just a few, some of our family’s favorite memories of Oakwood are Ms. Poppy singing and strumming her guitar in circle time in ECE, watching the kids get so excited for “Friday Fun” with Mrs. Doughty in first grade, all the amazing theater productions Mrs. Abbey has produced for the Upper School, the pumpkin pie at Thanks and Giving, and of course the school-wide Spirit Rallies! Mrs. Helvey has made the biggest impression on our family. She knows all the students by name, she’s at basketball games and concerts in the evening, and directing carpool traffic in the morning. There’s always a smile and a kind word to go along with her positive and warm demeanor and we appreciate knowing our children are in good hands with her at the helm. These small interactions with faculty, staff, students, and fellow parents are what make Oakwood such a tight-knit community and what we have found so meaningful to be part of during our time here. As a family, we have found immense enjoyment in participating in Oakwood’s various fundraising efforts. The Fund Run, auctions, and giving campaigns are a great way for us all to get involved as a family. The kids get so excited during Fund Run and they love to see how much they’re raising for their school. It makes them proud! The biggest reason we donate our time and resources to Oakwood is because it’s so important for our family to help support our school, as Oakwood has helped us raise all three of our children. We are happy to give back any way we can. We’ve seen our children grow into kind, confident people. Oakwood is a place where they can feel safe while enriching their minds and we are so thankful for the opportunities the school affords them.

2017-2018 Oak Leaf Society Oakwood’s newly established Oak Leaf Society recognizes the deep-rooted donor loyalty within our school community. Members of this society set a philanthropic example for fellow parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends, and play a vital role in ensuring that Oakwood continues to thrive year after year. The longer you give, the more enduring the impact of your support! The Oak Leaf Society celebrates donors who make annual gifts for five or more consecutive years. Consecutive years of giving are counted by fiscal year, which runs from July 1 to June 30. In honor of this important commitment, members receive special recognition in the annual Book of Gratitude. Thank you to the following donors who have generously shown their support of Oakwood each of the last five fiscal years.

Spreading Our Roots
On May 10, 2018, Oakwood School officially broke ground on our campus expansion project! We are filled with much hope and anticipation as we look out onto the busy construction sites—the Liberal Arts Building and Gymnasium which are progressing rapidly in time for use for the 2019-2020 school year. To support our need to expand and enhance our campus, we have launched the Spreading Our Roots Campaign. This campaign is the first of its kind for Oakwood, and mirrors what other independent, notfor-profit schools employ to fundraise for projects of this magnitude.

Campus Expansion Giving to Oakwood School The 2017-2018 school year was a transitional one at Oakwood for so many reasons—enrollment was up, students have thrived, and we are transforming our campus to propel us into a strong future for our students, faculty, and staff, ensuring we continue to be a leader academically, artistically, and athletically in our community. We would not be the school we are without all of you, and we look forward to seeing all the ways our community participates in this campaign and our other school-wide events. Our school is built on the strength of our community and for that we are grateful. Our goal is 100% participation to the Spreading Our Roots campaign. We offer many ways to give including credit card, check, stocks, multi-year pledges, and planned gifts. We look forward to your support in our efforts to expand and enhance Oakwood School.
Thank you to the current parents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, and friends who have already made a gift in support of the campaign. Your investment in Oakwood’s growth is greatly appreciated and truly makes an impact on our school.
