WHAT’S UP DOWNTOWN

Christ mas Shopping in

t’s officially begun – Christmas shopping in beautiful Downtown Oakville. There is nothing that signals the holidays like the Tree Lighting, which took place November 18, and the annual Santa Claus Parade on the 19th. With the Wish Tree sparkling in new warm white LED lights and the trees along Lakeshore Road twinkling with lights installed earlier this year, Downtown Oakville has transformed into a holiday wonderland. What better place to capture the Christmas spirit than to stroll along festive streets, past heritage buildings and browse quaint boutiques, cafes and restaurants. From independent, family-owned shops to popular brand stores and more, there is something for everyone in every price range.

caroling led by Mayor Burton and vocalist Enrico Galante. Santa Claus was there of course to hand out special treats to the children. It also kicked off the Christmas shopping season downtown as the businesses launched the 12 Days of Christmas Contest, Extended Holiday Shopping, Food for Life and Food Drive. The Downtown Oakville Wish Tree Lighting Ceremony was brought to you by the businesses and merchants in the Downtown Oakville Business Improvement Area and sponsored in part by Global TV, Mercedes-Benz Oakville, Empire Communities, Flowers By the Dozen, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, The 3 S’s Restaurant, and media partners Balance My Life, Oakville.com, The Oakville Beaver and West of the City.

As we enter the holiday season and all the festive soirees that go along with it, “many eyeglass wearers feel puzzled about how to incorporate eyeglasses into their holiday wardrobe,” says Adriano Giansante of Squint Eyewear. Here are four eyewear trends to complement your party attire. Sleek Metallics: As seen in Mykita No. 1 collection created from 0.5 mm thick stainless steel sheets, making it very light and ultra comfortable. Mykita No. 1 frames are easy for work, everyday wear and subtle enough to be worn with an evening outfit, without overshadowing your look. Exotic: Although acetate frames have been dominating the market this season, exotic materials such as wood as seen in Gold & Wood collection continue to have staying power. The natural patterning in wood makes it highly fashionable yet the matte finish adds to its sophistication. The array of colours and grain effect makes each piece unique, resulting in a subdued and classic look. Fine Jewellery: Some classic jewellery design houses such as Cartier and David Yurman offer fans yet another way to wear their designs through eyewear. Using signature styles, such as silver and gold cable seen in David Yurman’s classic bracelets, or the Panthere design on Cartier’s sunglasses, these glasses are meant to add wattage to your holiday style. Luxury: LINDBERG Precious collection offers signature minimalist, lightweight designs but in 18K yellow or white gold as well as buffalo horn finish. And to offer clients an ultimate experience in luxury, some pieces may also be customized with diamonds. u

Home for the Holidays How Downtown Oakville captures the spirit of the season BY ALEXANDRA MCCANN

A Taste of Downt own

Chefs’ Mash-Up September 10 brought gorgeous weather and many eager “foodies” to the Towne Square to witness the first Downtown Oakville DTO BIA Chef ’s Mash-UP to launch the bi-annual “A Taste of Downtown.” For those who came to watch the downtown chefs in action that day it was a sight to behold with live cooking and a tasting panel with celebrity chef Massimo Capra, Carrie Oliver of The Weather Network and Andrew Dobber, food blogger of dobbernationloves.com. The event offered great exposure for the fantastic cuisine available downtown as well as a chance for visitors to visit a tasting pavilion highlighting

some local businesses and wineries. Special thanks to those who participated, but most importantly Laura MacDonald–Rumi of The 3 S’s Restaurant and Event Committee Chair who was instrumental in bringing this event to downtown. Also, thanks goes out to the chefs who participated: Chef Harminder of Coriander Green, Chef Mike Spudowski of Jonathans, Chef Matt Tait of Paradiso, Chef Sam Karnaz of Kleopatra’s, Chef Carl Dahl of Ristorante Julia and Lan Hoang of 3 S’s Restaurant. All created fantastic dishes collaboratively.

The BIA also thanks its sponsors: Mercedes-Benz Oakville, Empire Condominiums, Global Television, HSBC, Rain Condominiums - Empire Communities, House of Flowers, The Oakville Beaver, SNAP Oakville, Oakville.com, Balance My Life, TAG Vodka and Camerons Beer. Local wine producers Vineland Winery, Tawse Winery, Malivoire Wines and Burning Kiln. The downtown partners for this event were: Infant Organics which supplied organic produce for the Chefs’ Mash-Up and samples of their goods, Black Forest Bakery, Lollipop and Pick of the Crop for the children’s programming, and The 3 S’s, Coriander Green, Jam, Paradiso, Kleopatra’s, and Colossus for a “Taste” sampling. OUR TOWN DOWNTOWN OAK VILLE

The holidays are a magical time when we get together with family and friends, and to me Downtown Oakville perfectly captures that idyllic holiday feeling. Being downtown during the holidays brings me back to a simpler time and reminds me of my childhood. I have so many fond memories of getting all bundled up and heading downtown with my parents to go Christmas shopping or even just to take a walk and enjoy the decorations, the lights and the cheerful festive music. The Santa Claus parade was another thing I looked forward to every year, watching the floats go by as I clutched a cup of hot chocolate, eagerly waiting to catch a glimpse of old St. Nick. The excitement of the parade could only be rivalled by the ceremonious lighting of the tree in the Towne Square accompanied by singing carols. The tree always seemed to tower over everyone, a shining beacon of the holiday spirit. Years later I’ve grown up and have gone off to university, but even though my friends and I all go our separate ways in the fall, the holidays are that one special time where we can take a break from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives and reconnect at our old hangouts downtown. We laugh, reminisce, and create new memories. Nothing brings you back quite like coming home for the holidays. And even as I get older, not knowing where my life may take me or where I’ll end up settling down, Oakville will always be home. I can see myself years from now bringing my own family to Downtown Oakville to make memories of their own. After all, there’s no place like home for the holidays. Family Ties Local business couples share the joys and stresses of working together

BY VICTORIA FORD

The story of how it all began differs. For some, it’s something that’s been passed down from one generation to the next. For others, it’s turning a love and passion into a career. And for others, it’s getting out of the daily grind and commute and investing in their own lives. Regardless, if it weren’t for privately owned businesses and franchises in Oakville’s downtown core, the city wouldn’t have the same feel. u DOWNTOWN OAK VILLE

eyond the number of independent business owners in Oakville, there’s something else that sets the heritage downtown apart. And while it sounds like heaven for some of us – others might liken the arrangement to a prison sentence. Regardless, for a high percentage of Oakville retailers, it’s an equation that, pardon the pun, works: Couples who have built their careers and reputations working together. There are more than 20 married couples working downtown. Factor in the number of parent and child and longtime partner teams and you begin to see a common theme developing. Downtown is a place full of familiar faces; independent owners, franchisees and managers who are dedicated to building relationships and providing a level of customer service that feels more like family. For anyone who’s made a trip to the downtown shops and restaurants, you’ll hear the same story: Going shopping is like visiting old friends. And this familial relationship built between owner and customer is something that retailers enjoy just as much as their customers – it’s that something extra special that makes shopping close to home all that more important. Here’s a snapshot of a few of the couples who make downtown a special place to visit. Browsing the quaint boutiques, visiting the art galleries and museums, the waterfront parks and wandering the tree-lined residential streets can be a full day. And odds are that over the years you’ve satisfied your hunger via a stop or two at the White Oak Restaurant. There, you’ll have been greeted Angela and Gus Traiforos, who have been running the restaurant together for 45 years. Run off their feet, literally, the Triforoses keep their perspective in business and marriage – bantering back and forth together, and laughing over the course of the day. “I keep telling him, one of these days I’m going to divorce 18

him,” Angela warns, keeping Gus in line. But, watching the two manoeuvre around patrons, both new and returning, you quickly see how much they enjoy the joys and stresses of working together. “You get to help one another, and in good and bad, you are together,” she confides. Barrington’s is another Oakville landmark. Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, it’s been a go-to for seasonal outerwear. Couple and owners Paul and Brenda Barrington have been working together in this family-run establishment for 23 years. What keeps them going? “The business is like our third child, and we have taken great pleasure watching it grow and develop,” Brenda shares. How have they made a success of both home and work? The

insights this couple provides seem simple enough: “Make sure you each bring unique talents to the table rather than competing with each other.” This concept – of knowing and building on one another’s strengths – seems to be what makes these couples and their businesses click. For the past four years, Saskia Beckhuizen and Walt Reilly of Knit One Bead Too have also been enjoying the joys and challenges of working together. Through their experience they too have some insights for couples considering entering the co-working relationship dance. “You have to choose something that you truly love. If not, things will seem more like work and feel more like a “job” instead of a passion. When you enjoy what you are doing things come easy.” They also encourage one partner keeping a full-time job for the first year or so outside of the family business, “in order to guarantee income especially when starting off.” A stop at The Crepe Kitchen will bring you face-to-face with Ana and Eduardo Siles. While their restaurant has only been in Oakville since 2009, this couple learned the rules of working together through their catering business in Lima, Peru. What’s the secret ingredient to their success? Passion. “I love cooking; my husband is good at marketing and other aspects of the business,” Ana explains. “I stick to my work, and he knows to stay out of my kitchen,” she adds with a laugh. The truth that becomes evident when you see Ana and Eduardo in action is that they complement each other – playing off of one another’s skills. A successful tactic other local couples have also adopted. Mary Wileichuk and Alex Terrier have operated Akasha’s Den for close to five years. “We love working together and can honestly say that there isn’t a moment that we feel we see each other

too much,” Mary says. “We live in Oakville and this is our home. Having our business in our home town feels right. Being downtown helps us feels like we are part of the community we live in and we love being by the water. Going down to the lake for breaks and walks with our dogs is a wonderful way to start or end our days. Everything we need is downtown too and we love supporting other businesses in our downtown community.” For George and Tammy Couto of Seasons Restaurant and Corks Restaurant, downtown brought them together. When George opened Seasons 15 years ago, Tammy, who had worked in the restaurant that previously occupied that location, came in to congratulate him on his opening. A few weeks later, George was swamped with business and called Tammy to offer her a job. In 2000, they married. “The challenge of working together was that we were always talking about the business and the same issues – so we opened Corks three years ago, which Tammy manages. Now we have

different conversations,” George admits. As for working downtown, they love it. “It’s a great place – the people, the customers, other merchants. It’s a community with a family-oriented feel; not a corporate approach. Here we build relationships with customers – it’s just a great place to work, live and shop.” Eric and Erika Funnell of Roasting Apples are also in agreement. “We have also come to learn so much about our strengths and our weaknesses. We bring different things to the table that complement and benefit the store as a whole,” Eric divulges. “Respect is also a huge part of the working environment we have created as well.” Working together for 14 years, and married for 22, the couple has gained many valuable insights from the experience, and they still enjoy the flexibility and challenges it brings. “The pleasures are that we see each other and still enjoy doing it all together.” A simple equation for success. “The best part of my job?” asks Rick Vesters of continued on page 23

Side Streets Discover the treasure trove of shops off Lakeshore

As Christmas approaches there are few places as quaint and beautiful as Downtown Oakville for browsing, shopping, dining and just spending a day surrounded by heritage buildings, family-owned boutiques and restaurants. It’s the perfect spot to bring the family for a full day of enjoying the sights, the sounds and the shopping. There is literally something for everyone here, and in every price range. And as much as a stroll along Lakeshore Road can easily occupy your day, do yourself a favour and meander down some of the side streets and around the corners. Here you will find unique little shops and restaurants that may just hold some pleasant surprises. u 24

wo blocks off the beaten path, and easy to overlook, is Winterberry. And yet, what they have to offer is exquisite and well worth the time to browse. They have everything from great gift ideas such as candles to handmade soaps to an amazing collection of new, fine antique and vintage furniture. Turn the corner at Thomas Street and keep walking past Church Street. Just before Randall, you will see a cute white heritage home with a welcoming front porch. That’s Winterberry Lane. Listening to their clients and through their own travels they have collected a fascinating and eclectic array of furnishings, accessories and gifts. Still on Thomas Street, but closer to Lakeshore Road, you will find the award-winning Jonathan’s Restaurant – one of the favourite fine restaurants of local celebrity Ron MacLean of Hockey Night in Canada. And across the street, Circus Chocolates has homemade chocolates and ice cream. It is one of the places to visit to find those sweet gifts for 26

teachers and friends. When exploring the side streets, the question is where to begin? The first step is to pick up a business directory from one of the many retail stores. Here you will find every downtown shop, restaurant, cafe and business, along with a simple map so you can quickly get your bearings. Starting at Navy Street, one of the town’s original streets that linked the harbour with the town, you will find a street of historic homes. Some are privately owned and some now house businesses.

One such home has both Canadian Sound, the premier home automation business in the area, and Baroque, a beautifully appointed store that features decor and furnishings. It’s worth browsing through some of their exquisite room settings. For the cycling enthusiast, you will find a terrific specialist in Racer Sportif on Robinson Street – just half a block from Navy. New to this store is Femme Sportif, which caters to the women. They are indeed experts in everything cycling and their shop is full of top level bikes and gear. Dunn Street has a number of quaint shops and restaurants. Home Accents Emporium is loaded with classic European-styled home furnishings, giftware, tableware, bed and bath items. Just a few steps away you will find the best crepe place in the area – The Crepe Kitchen. This is the ideal spot for breakfast, lunch or even an early light dinner. Everything is homemade and in addition to entree

and dessert crepes, you will also find soups, sandwiches, wine and beer. If you are a fan of consignment shopping, you are in for a real treat in Downtown Oakville. It’s actually a destination for consignment shoppers. There are three shops in close proximity. Two are on Dunn Street, north of Lakeshore – Second Chance and Closet 112. Both deal in designer clothes and make their selections carefully so the savings are incredible for high quality clothing. The third shop, By Consignment, is just one block east on Trafalgar Road and has designer as well as vintage clothing and accessories. Just new to downtown and a few doors down from By Consignment is EE Sushi. The food is terrific and features a number of Asian dishes including Japanese, Chinese and Thai. Keep going further north on Trafalgar and make a right on Randall and here you will find a truly unique store catering to new parents. Infant Organics is all about ready-prepared healthy foods for children from infants to toddlers. The new business prepares a whole line of tasty snacks mom can carry in her purse to full meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Reynolds Street has a number of great shops. South of Lakeshore you will find Mainstream

Clothiers, Oakville Fine Hardware, which offers a comprehensive collection of fine architectural hardware, and Akasha’s Den which offers natural products that include incense, essential oils, smudging herbs and resins, beeswax candles and a variety of Canadian-made body-care products. Inspirational books and CDs are also available. The owners say they carry items that inspire tran-

quillity, healing and harmony for the home, mind, body and spirit. On the north side of Lakeshore you have Many Faces and the entrance to Tocca Finita, a very classy and upscale women’s store. The address is actually Lakeshore Road, but you will find their elegant entrance off Reynolds. Across the street are Inside Story Fine Lingerie

And the prices are right. It’s one of the old town’s best kept secrets – except among those visitors who are ready to explore everything the downtown has to offer. Before you leave, there are two little nooks that should not be overlooked. Tucked away in Lakeshore Lanes (beside Corks Restaurant between Trafalgar and Reynolds) you will find Studio PH, a different kind of hair salon where the environment and chemical-free products are the order of the day, and Laurie McLachlan Jewellery, a fine custom jeweller who has made Downtown Oakville her home for 13 years. The other treasure is House of Kangaroo, which is at the end of a hallway of the doorway beside Squint Eyewear. Actually, you can better see the House of Kangaroo signage at the back of the building on Robinson Street. It specializes in kangaroo leather and is heavy into golf apparel, but you will also find sweaters, briefcases, wallets, UGG products and attractive jewellery and gift ideas. So, as you prepare for your holiday shopping trip to Downtown Oakville, pick up the business directory and explore every nook and cranny. You’ll have an adventure and find some hidden treasures among the fabulous shops and restaurants that line the main street. OT

This is a couples’ disease and we want to support our Mo Bros!” says Liz Prescott of BARBETTE II. On the first of the month, men register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face and for the rest of the month they keep their faces fuzzy. Along with their Mo Sistas, these Mo Bros raised funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mogrowing efforts.

The funds raised are directed to programs run by Movember and their men’s health partner, Prostate Cancer Canada, which support a broad range of innovative, world-class programs for awareness and education, survivorship and research. “The store owners downtown are generous and many are involved in several worthy causes. It’s what gives us a strong sense of community and makes us a vibrant and friendly shopping area,” Liz adds. OT

The precious works of Laurie McLachlan Nestled in a quaint alleyway just off of Oakville’s main downtown strip, shoppers will find a true treasure: Laurie McLachlan. A goldsmith and jewellery designer, McLachlan has been an Oakville fixture for 13 years, bringing joy and beauty to all those who happen to get a package from her studio-store. BY VICTORIA FORD

sked why she decided to establish herself in Oakville, and not in B.C. where she first started apprenticing as a goldsmith, McLachlan takes off her glasses and smiles. “This is home and where my family lives. When I first started looking for studio space I was located in Miller’s Muse. My work has blossomed into something which requires it’s own retail shop, and here it is.” With this she gestures at the creations that take up the front half of her space. Strolling around her store, one is met with whimsical and contemporary designs that challenge the manufactured-ideal set in chain stores. From fine hammered gold and diamond jewellery sets, to large, chunky designs, there is something truly unique for anyone. With each pass by a case, one’s interest is peaked by yet another fascinating piece. Working with ethically sourced stones, McLachlan’s goal is to share 32

her love and passion for jewellery – which started as a child – with all those she comes in contact with. “I love the colour and shapes of the stones I work with,” she explains. “I work very intuitively. I pick a stone and try to keep the designs simple. I draw inspiration from everywhere, especially when I travel.”

“I have a passion for jewellery,” McLachlan confesses. “Jewellery makes people happy. It’s such a personal experience, picking out a piece of jewellery, and here they meet the artist who crafted the piece and so it’s very personal for them.” While continuing her own designs, McLachlan also enjoys working with clients to transform old, neglected jewellery into something new and treasured. “I like to take old rings and jewellery and reset my clients’ stones into a new piece. It’s such a personal experience.” Gearing up for her Christmas open house, McLachlan is also being kept busy working on designing a line with Canadian Diamonds. “With Canada finding our own diamonds, it’s exciting to work in partnership and generate this new collection.” Sharing her passion and talents through her studio-store, McLachlan’s making the world a prettier place – one stone, one setting at a time. OT
