music from every angle, the beautiful downtown showcased exactly what they are all about: The best shopping, incredible dining and an amazing feeling of community spirit and togetherness. Midnight Madness brought more than 30 community groups and more than 50,000 visitors to the Lakeshore to bring awareness of the “bigger pic-

ture” to everyone. There are so many reasons to come back to downtown and experience it all. The Jazz festival, in its 19th year, was no different. With an estimated attendance of over 170,000 visitors over three days with 41 performances, visitors far and wide commented that this year’s lineup was

Coming Events Downtown Oakville is a beautiful place to visit any day of the week – boutiques, cafes, dining, gifts and fashions; it’s all here in one compact heritage district. If you were lucky enough to be there this year, you would have experienced it – and felt the positive energy through the ambient sounds of multiple performances, laughter and, well, just the feeling of thousands of people coming together to enjoy Oakville’s beautiful downtown and everything that it has to offer. 2011 will go down in the books as a fantastic summer for many. October 31 | Tiny Tots on Parade

It was a solemn gathering at Towne Square on September 11 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, hosted by the Interfaith Council of Halton (ICH). The event featured a parade of emergency service personnel, including representatives of the Halton Regional Police Service, the Halton Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and the Oakville Fire Department. Interfaith prayers were delivered by each faith representative, followed by communal singing. The ICH is a council of leaders made up of Halton’s diverse faith communities who gather to dialogue and build mutually supportive relationships based on under-

little Trick-or-Treaters to bring their small and scary ghosts and goblins to the 15th annual Tiny Tots on Parade. This is a safe, entertaining holiday event for the little ones to enjoy. Festivities begin in Towne Square at 10 a.m.

November 18 | Tree Lighting Ceremony Celebrate the lights, the magic and the charm of Downtown Oakville this Christmas as the businesses kick off the holiday season with the official lighting of the fantastic new Towne Square Tree. Santa and his elves will be treating everyone to hot apple cider and holiday cheer. Be Random with Your Kindness

Echoes of Erchless

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 4, 2011 On November 4th, help Oakville thrive with kindness and do something for someone else – a stranger, a senior, a neighbour, a colleague. Celebrate small gestures in life in random ways. Look for Random Act of Kindness cards throughout town by mid-October. Then, on November 4th, do an act of kindness for someone and pass your card along to that person, encouraging him/her to do the same. Every small gesture pays big dividends. To learn more about this great initiative check out www.theocf.org or follow us on Twitter @oakvilleCF or Facebook. Sponsored in part by:

Halton Regional Police Service Pipes and Drums and the Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate presented “Echoes of Erchless” this summer. This was a free concert series at the estate with the police band, The Chisholm Dancers and a number of special guest performers. The Halton Regional Police Service Pipes and Drums band was formed in 1987 and today its primary function is to enhance the concept and spirit of community policing through the performance of highland bagpipe music at concerts, charity and fundraising events, police and military Tattoos, parades and competitions throughout the Golden Horseshoe. If you missed the concert series this year, make sure to check the museum website for dates next year. It’s just one more reason to visit beautiful Downtown Oakville.

Be Random with Your Kindness Communities thrive with kindness, meaning we all benefit from kindness. So the Oakville Community Foundation (OCF) is urging everyone to take a moment to recognize kindness in Oakville by doing something for someone else – a stranger, a senior, a neighbour, a colleague. We’re all in this together. Along with great partners such as the Downtown Oakville BIA and others, the OCF has earmarked November 4 as Oakville’s Inaugural Random Act of Kindness Day. It’s a day to celebrate the small gestures in life in random ways; such as buying coffee for the person behind you. Or calling someone who’s alone. Or thanking the local crossing guard. Look for Random Act of Kindness cards distributed throughout town by mid-October, with digital versions on OCF’s website (www.theocf. org). Then, on November 4, do an act of kindness

for someone and pass your card along to that person, encouraging him or her to do the same. Every small gesture pays big dividends. On November 4, help Oakville thrive with kindness. On November 4, be random. Learn more about this initiative by checking out OCF on Facebook and following them on Twitter @oakvilleCF.

Café Galleria celebrates 30 years 151 Lakeshore Rd E 905.845.7731 www.cafegalleria.ca Café Galleria has been a downtown tradition for more than 30 years by consistently combining time-honoured Italian cuisine with excellent value and service. Your dining experience is enjoyed in a warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of Italy. Candlelight provides an intimate and romantic European-style ambience. The menu is a combination of both Chef Salvatore Mercato’s favourite dishes and most popular delicacies from the course of his 22 years at Café Galleria. The service is attentive yet casual, in keeping with the unpretentious atmosphere. To conclude your evening, no visit is complete without one of Chef Sal’s homemade desserts or a splash of Limoncello on ice. Peter Tekavcic with his son Chris and Chris’s wife Lisa have owned and operated Café Galleria since 2000. The restaurant, however, has been operating since 1981 when it began as a café and has been transformed over the years to a casual fine dining establishment. With only 40 seats in two rooms, it is recommended to call well in advance to reserve a table. If you haven’t visited them for a while or you’ve never been, do yourself a favour and drop by to see why their regular guests have continued to support them through the years. u

over three years to develop, with each frame handmade in Japan by the world’s finest artisanal craftsman. Each frame, an heirloom piece, requires six hours to engrave, thereby limiting production to only four frames per day. Many of the technical drawings contain over 3,000 carefully placed lines (the average frame contains less than 10), and the result is a triumph from both a fashion and optical manufacturing standpoint. Leisure Society by Shane Baum is sold only at the most exclusive shops around the world and will continue to be selective in their distribution plan. The Leisure Society collection has taken up residence at such sought-after boutiques as the Downtown Oakville location of Delta Optical – the store’s newest location and the next creative evolution for the 41-year-old company. Nestled in the Towne Square, the modern boutique showcases the unique eyewear that owner and optician, Zaf Khalfan travels the world to find. It’s the handcrafted frames and original styles that draw customers to Delta Optical. I’ve lived here for the past 19 years, met my husband here and raised our children. As a mother of three young teenagers involved in all sorts of sports and activities, photography became a passion for capturing many of the great moments in their lives. I enjoy getting up early to take pictures of some of Oakville’s landmarks to capture the peacefulness and stillness of the morning sunrise. I feel that Oakville has so much to offer as a community and is an ideal city to raise a family. With such great beauty in Oakville, it is a great place to experiment with photography. “

Celebrating Fashions and gifts galore in Downtown Oakville With summer drawing to a close, the fall fashions are in and they are spectacular. It’s time to say goodbye to the floral frocks and summer sandals and rejoice at the return of leather boots, outerwear and accessories. AVANTÉ BOUTIQUE

“The yoga jean we offer at Barbette II is quickly becoming a favourite. Once you try a pair on your won’t want to take them off,” Liz exclaims. Don’t forget to accessorize – ad that bold, bright, rich colour in your fabulous belts, scarves or shoes.

Fall is going to be fun with a stampede of animal prints and lots of tunics, leggings, jeggings and skinny pants, says Anna Cammarata, owner of Avanté Boutique. And here’s something we haven’t seen in a long time, she says, the Nordic look. Yes the Nordic look is back after a long hibernation – watch for tunics, tops, vests and cardigans. It’s a nice crazy feel and it’s about to make this fall fabulous, Anna says. Jewel tones - reds, magentas and purples – are the colours to look for, not only in clothing but accessories as well. The gem colours are going to be hot. Day dresses are the big trend and they are hot with boots and a sweater coat. Chunky knitwear, long sweater coat over a dress with boots or leggings – it’s a fantastic look and you won’t go wrong leaving the house in this splendid ensemble. Fur detailing and ruffles are also in this fall and purses with faux Mongolian lamb wool. The Mongolian thing is big this year on clothing and purses, Anna advises.

BARRINGTON’S This season is Barrington’s 60th year in Oakville and they have gone all out to make it special. They have exciting new lines from Spain, Paris, Milan and Madagascar to add to their collections. Fur trim is a must-have for fall and Barrington’s has many great fur accessories to get you the look you need. The handbag is also an important statement item for fall and, again, Barrington’s has all the best designer bags whether it’s Longchamp, Michael Kors, Cole Hann or Oakville’s own Karen Wilson – they have the “it” bag for you! barringtons.ca

Fall 2011 is full of bold, bright and rich colours, and lots of it, says Liz Prescott of Barbette 11. Red, purple and green being the dominant hues, she adds. Geometrics are on the comeback but animal prints, particularly leopard, are still extremely strong. Tone down your colours with beautiful cashmere shawls and cardigans in rich earth tones. Classic denim continues to be a favourite, she says, advising that you whether you choose skinny, straight, boot or wide legs, those pair of jeans will pair beautifully with a crisp white shirt or soft,

The Catherine Middleton craze has been on even before the wedding. We’re talking the Duchess of Cambridge who has been using classic elegance as her signature style. And we would all agree, she looks wonderful, says Sue Pritchard of Chatsworth & Hall. Another influence in the current trends is the 50s look made popular by the successful television show Mad Men. The key to all this, says Sue, is “finished” and “polished.” So what’s hot this fall? Sue says royal blue is in. “We are seeing this rich and beautiful colour become more and more mainstream. Combined with black or navy, it looks both new and fresh.” Another hot colour is taupe. The Ribkoff line

calls the colour “Moonrock” – a warm combination of silver and beige which is flattering on almost everyone. “How wonderful to have another basic colour to beautifully combine with, and in some cases replace, everyone’s favourite – black. “The taupes, blacks and creams of the season also combine in some of the most sophisticated animal prints we have seen in years,” Sue says. Thinner pants If you’re not quite into the extremely popular legging look, the new, thinner pant worn under tu-

nics, long shirts, short dresses is an easy, flattering and stylish alternative. Wider pants Draping, wide pants are elegant, easy to wear and very European. They look great with longer draped topes or with short, shaped jackets. Short, shaped skirts In stretch fabrics for comfort, these skirts are sassy and stylish. Worn above the knee, they are an important look for fall.

Longer, “maxi” skirts Graceful and so easy to wear, long skirts have crossed the Atlantic from Europe this summer and have stayed for fall. They are best worn with flatter, chunky shoes or boots for a boho, comfortable look. Modea stretch cotton blouses Customers are raving about the fashionable Modea blouses that have an extremely soft combination of cotton, nylon and elasthane, a fabric that washes extremely well, doesn’t need ironing, stretches for comfort and never feels tight. Chatsworth & Hall has seven styles in white, pale blue and stripes this fall. Funky mesh layering tops The newest in layering, the Joseph Ribkoff crew or turtleneck long-sleeved mesh tops go under everything, covering the arms and adding an extra element of style without adding bulk – or warmth. chatsworthandhall.com

MAINSTREAM It’s a new season, new styles and new moods, says owner Laura Scarfone. Step through the doors of Mainstream and be transported into a botanical fall garden. Jewel tones of emerald, wine, teal, cherry and royal blue are in bloom. Seasoned with paprika, pumpkin, chestnut, eggplant, sage and mouthwatering mushroom. It’s a recipe that will satisfy your appetite for fashion, she says. Here’s how Laura is breaking down this year’s wardrobe: There’s a She-Wolf in the closet… Fashion brings prints and pelts out of the wilderness and onto the sidewalks. Earn your stripes from head to toe, or think tamer, with just a touch of the trend. Wrap your neck in style with an animal pashmina atop your chunky knit duster.

LUXURY. FASHION. SERVICE.

One of the boys… Back to school means time for schoolboy blazers, plaid jumpers, Peter Pan collared shirts and tartan suits. Razor-thin pencil, below-the-knee skirts, bow tied blouses and shifts are seen from the campus to the boardroom. Take that smoking menswear jacket and a cozy turtleneck with your favourite denims and booties for that cool evening stroll. Hopeless romantic… Victorian romance sets the mood in ruffles, lace and bows. Fall florals are layered with faux furs or cable knit vests thrown on with a chunky hip belt.

Rock ‘n‘ Roll… Mods and rockers have hit the scene in vivid bold prints, sporting cool black and whites to warm Pucci prints in jewel tones. Sharp geometric patterns and graphic colour blocking are right in line for fall.

The place to shop for something different everyday...

Day to evening… Sprinkle some glitz into your 9-5 attire. To keep your look office appropriate, contrast vinyls and patent/ pleather with faux fur jackets. Add python and croc patterns in super matte or ultra glossy finishes. Glamour revisited… Sequined minis or long romantic gowns in satins or floral organzas let you dance the night away for that special evening on the town. Tuxedo jackets in silks, velvets or sequined are paired with skinny pants or jeans for that girls’ night out. Take a walk on the wild side… Hot skins take a bite out of fashion footwear in pleather python and croc pumps or knee-high boots. You will see chunky heels to platform stilettos to bowed ballerinas, in lots of great neutrals or bold brights. Chains and pearls adorn outfits from boho chic to Chanel classics. Gorgeous bright gems bring sparkle and charm to finish off that special piece. As the leaves fall and the warm summer breeze turns cool, set the mood for the fall season ahead. mainstreamclothier.com

OLSEN EUROPE The fall/winter collection showcases contemporary looks with extraordinary details. This season offers a variety of trends. Scarves with dip-dye effects and metallic chains are worn with vintage leather. Couture jackets are worn with ultra-skinny trousers. Make a huge fashion statement this season with the must-have look of sheer fabric. Fashion takes on a new elegance this season with flowing layers, lace, draping styles and feminine necklines. Ave Montaigne is a classy, sexy collection which is still essentially casual. Couture jackets are worn with ultra-skinny trousers. Printed silk and lace blouses, embroidered jacquard, silky fabrics and knit dresses make stunning highlights. Equally eye-catching and attractive bell skirts, imaginative combinations of studs and metal pearls feature in the accessories. Olsen Europe’s first look at fall begins with Bond Street, which unites elements that would usually be

considered complete opposites: elegant femininity and casual effortlessness. The collection features jackets with uniform details, like stamped buttons, or safari elements, combined with gold printed or gathered tops. Delicate materials with animal print give a feminine silhouette and leave plenty of space for casual pieces.

MENDOCINO There’s lots of variety for fall, meaning there are so many ways to update your wardrobe. Adding colour is a must and can be done with pants (twill or cord – JBrand and Mother have some great options), a blouse and accessories such as a scarf, earmuffs or a handbag. Mendocino is seeing an influence from the

Southwest which is bringing together touches of suede, intarsia, fringe detail, embroidery and the poncho. If you go for this look, keep it simple. You’ll also want to get your hands on anything with a fur detail (real or faux) this fall. Whether it’s trim on a coat, a fur vest, shearling or a fur accessory (such as an eternity scarf) you can’t go wrong. To bring together that fresh boy-meets-girl feeling, pick up a structured blazer, updated with detail on the lapel such as contrast colour and leather trim or a notch lapel (from Tiger of Sweden for example). Sweaters are huge this year, as are pants and jeans that have a higher rise and a cleaner silhouette. Say hello to simplicity. Find them in twill, leather, cord or in menswear fabrics.

Burnt orange, aubergine, chestnut brown will be big this winter, whereas classic tortoiseshell is the new black. There is so much history in Downtown Oakville it’s hard to begin. Many of the shops are in buildings that are close to 200 years old. It’s a rich and storied heritage with remnants of our past still very much present. Some are open; others are not, except during one weekend a year – September 24 and 25. Finding Your Happy Place

Sometimes paradise is right under your feet Have you ever dreamed of living in a faraway land, in a beautiful house, overlooking spectacular scenery? It appears to be a common theme among my clients as well. As a Life Coach, I hear many stories of how life doesn’t match the picture we paint in our heads. I too, have such a story that actually came true. What I learned from that fateful experience is that your ideal and your reality is not necessarily a match. By Francine Landry

I

t all started rather innocently many years ago when my husband took out the book The Ten Best Inns in America from the Oakville Public Library. We visited one in Grafton, Vermont. We fell in love with quintessential New England. We visited again many more times until one day, we owned a house there. We realized after our first summer in Vermont that living in a small village was not all it’s cracked up to be. We sold it. All the things that we loved – its charm, quaint historic nature, natural beauty and lovely places to walk were certainly still paramount in our minds. However, the reality of driving 45 minutes to run errands or go out for dinner or even taking our garbage to the dump was truly tiring. Coming home to Downtown Oakville was just that – coming home. 36

Our Town Downtown Oak ville

I have a fresh new perspective. All the things that I loved about New England, I have right here in Oakville. I feel so lucky to live in a charming historic neighbourhood filled with quaint houses, shops and restaurants. Natural beauty, water and wonderful walks abound. It’s a small town feel with big city amenities. I love strolling downtown to buy my favourite “skinny bread” from Black Forest Bakery. Stepping into the family-run shop is a feast for the senses.

Oakville has a small town feel with big city amenities.

The smells of fresh baked goods, trays laden with sweets and the friendly greetings from the staff are so welcoming. I often take along their melt-inyour-mouth cookies or French macaroons (best I’ve ever tasted) to meetings. Treats put everyone in a happy place. It’s great to take advantage of all that our beautiful downtown has to offer. What are some of the things you enjoy doing when you are away on holidays? Perhaps it’s time to bring your list to your lovely downtown and fill your life’s basket with an abundance of good things to do, buy or enjoy. OT Francine Landry is a Life Coach at My Best Life Now!
