A Hidden Treasure

You’re looking for that ideal day trip – a place where there are interesting sights, great shopping, places to eat, parks and a waterfront. Historic Niagaraon-the-Lake keeps coming to mind, but the drive along a busy QEW can be long and uneventful. Why not look closer to home? Downtown Oakville is perhaps one of the most overlooked tourism destination spots in Ontario. u Downtown Oak ville

With a busy marina, waterfront parks, tree-lined streets with heritage homes, shopping and dining, there is plenty to see and do in Downtown Oakville.

Did you know

that the old town’s history is still on display along the residential streets surrounding a vibrant shopping destination with quaint boutiques, cafes and restaurants? Take a quiet stroll down to the waterfront along the tree-lined streets surrounding the downtown. Here you will find heritage homes from the early 1800s, many sporting plaques that reveal the names and occupations of the original owners. Find a quiet refuge for a picnic lunch at Lakeside Park and then hike along the water’s edge trail or wander down to the picturesque harbour and dream of sailing adventures on Lake Ontario. Or visit the Oakville Museum across the street from the park and learn about the importance that this little slice of Canada played in shaping our history and the role the town played in the Underground Railroad as slaves from the U.S. South made their way to a new life of freedom. Along the main street, you will notice many of the stores are in heritage buildings, giving the downtown its quaint historic look and feel. Here you will discover independent shops with original fashions and gifts, award-winning restaurants, cafes, bistros and tea house. Well-known chain stores mix comfortably with the familyowned boutiques, giving visitors an abundance of

Explore the side streets off the main drag and you will discover wonderful treasures – shops where you will find unique home furnishings and decor accessories. Or stop for some homemade ice cream at one of the family-owned shops, explore original art in the numerous galleries and enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants along the

main street and around the corners. Anyone who has read Any Known Blood by Lawrence Hill will recognize some of the names of streets and shops. Perhaps the biggest misconception about Downtown Oakville is that it caters only to the very affluent. That simply is not true. Prices range from high to low – pleasing every budget. There are high-end shops for sure, but there are some very reasonable alternatives making this a full day of sightseeing and shopping for the whole family. Add exciting events such as Midnight Madness on July 15 and the Jazz Festival August 3 – 7 and you can see why visitors who know about Downtown Oakville would want to keep it their little secret. OT

Garvey’s celebrates 50 years downtown www.garveys.ca The year was 1961 and Bonanza and Gunsmoke were still on, the first in-flight movie was shown and Barak Obama was born. While JFK was popularizing the two-button suit, the revolution had begun bringing flared trousers, flowered shirts, wide lapels and images of peace, love and rock n’ roll. And in Downtown Oakville another revolution was taking place; Sean Garvey together with business partner John Willmott launched Garvey & Willmott Men’s Shops ushering in a new trend in men’s fashions called sportswear. Still in its original location in Downtown Oakville, Garvey’s Fine Men’s Wear is proudly celebrating 50 years of family ownership. Purchased in 2005 by the Lenfesty family with an eye to the next 50 years, the store remains committed to the original values of exceptional customer service offering an extensive selection of high quality clothing and on-site tailoring. From custom-made suits, sport coats, trousers and dress shirts to a large selection of footwear Garvey’s continues to search to find the best in quality and wearability from the world’s finest dress and sportswear collections. Visit their landmark location at 183 Lakeshore Road East and help them celebrate their 50th anniversary.

D

owntown Oakville has been transformed into a sparkling fairyland. Trees lining the main street have been strung with LED lights, providing a magical glow that enhances the old-world atmosphere and charm that has made Downtown Oakville a popular and vibrant shopping district. Local business leaders, Mayor Rob Burton, town officials, Councillors Dave Gittings and Keith Bird and residents joined the BIA celebration in the Towne Square in May to give a celebra-

tory toast to the new lights. It’s just one of the many initiatives the Downtown Oakville BIA has funded to make the old town one of the best town centres in Ontario and a hot tourist destination. This beautification initiative is sure to enhance the downtown area and the new white LED lights will dazzle Downtown Oakville year-round. So next time you visit the old town, linger a little longer and see what all the fuss is about.

www.doorsopenontario.ca www.oakvillemuseum.ca Doors Open Oakville returns on September 24 and 25 as local historical buildings, heritage sites and cultural organizations open their doors free of charge. Many of the participating venues will also offer special activities such as guided tours, exhibitions and demonstrations. This family friendly event is part of a worldwide move ment that began in France in 1984 and has spread to over 40 countries. Oakville joins nearly 60 communities in celebrating the 10th anniversary of Doors Open in Ontario. While there are interesting Doors Open sites across town, with its concentration of heritage buildings and its classic main street, Downtown Oakville plays an important role. Visit the Information Tent located in Towne Square for directions to the many sites within a short walking distance. Find out where you can board a wooden schooner, write a letter with a quill pen, or climb a spooky tower and ring some bells! Come out this year and experience the fascinating heritage of your own community. u Downtown Oak ville

This strategic alliance will create a stronger value proposition for their clientele by reducing overhead, increasing the firm’s design capacity and allowing one-stop shopping for all interior needs.

Avanté Boutique turns 10 this year When Anna Cammarata was looking for a location for Avanté Boutique 10 years ago, Downtown Oakville beckoned. It’s such a vibrant and beautiful spot, she says. And perfect for the kind of store she wanted to create. Anna has built a reputation for carrying unique fashions, specializing in Canadian designers as well as many European lines. These are styles and designs that you won’t find in the mall. And that is just so appropriate for Downtown Oakville, which prides itself on being able to offer visitors a truly rewarding shopping experience. Reasonably priced, Avanté has built a large clientele through friendly and expert service, honest opinions and often hear from their customers that “I always get so many compliments when I wear your clothes.”

Downtown Oakville officially a tourist destination New home for Johnathan Quinn www.johnathanquinn.com A fixture in the downtown area for close to four years, Johnathan Quinn has moved across the street to 268 Lakeshore Road East. Owner Joe Diodati is a familiar figure downtown – if he’s not in his store, he can be found strolling the main street. Joe, after all, is Chairman of the Downtown Oakville Business Improvement Area, which promotes downtown as a great place to visit, shop and dine. Having spent most of his life in retail, Joe has a good eye for fashion and has been serving a loyal clientele from all across Southern Ontario and into the northeast U.S. If you want something stylish to wear at the Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival August 3 to 7, then Johnathan Quinn is the store you need to visit. 8

www.oakvilledowntown.ca Yes, Downtown Oakville is now proud to officially be considered a tourist destination which means the retailers in this charming, heritage shopping area can remain open on holidays. Effective July 1, all retailers in the downtown core are exempt from the Retail Business Holiday Act and so they can remain open on recognized statutory holidays if they choose. “This is fantastic news for Downtown Oakville,” says Joseph Diodati, Chair of the Downtown Oakville BIA, which has a mandate to enhance and promote this unique downtown. “This little gem called Downtown Oakville is dynamic, it’s cultured and most importantly progressive,” says Marcia Small, Downtown Oakville Board member and business owner. ”All of the success factors for our downtown area make shopping, dining and gallery and museum hopping a real treat and the new designation is another great reason to visit Oakville’s downtown core!” Big events such as the Jazz Festival, Midnight Madness, A Taste of Downtown and the Runway Show draw people from all over the GTA and have a significant economic impact on the local economy. These festivals continually encourage people who live in the GTA to keep coming back to Oakville’s downtown core, which is situated amongst natural, built and cultural heritage attractions as well as the Oakville Arts Galleries, Oakville Museum and the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. The tourism designation means that all businesses in the Downtown Oakville BIA are exempt from the Retail Business Holiday Act, and that businesses have the option if they wish to remain open on Statutory Holidays. It’s just one more reason to add Downtown Oakville to your list of places to visit this summer.

Midnight Madness A Crazy Time Downtown

I

t’s the biggest shopping blitz of the year; a day when stores are open late and offer bargains galore, Lakeshore Road is closed and more than 50,000 people take over the town well into the night. We are talking, of course, about Midnight Madness on Friday, July 15. In its 34th year, this is without a doubt Downtown Oakville’s largest retail event of the year. The stores stay open until midnight and offer great deals on fabulous items. The night kicks off at 5 p.m. with live bands on eight stages scattered throughout downtown. Each stage will feature a different live band that will include Glory Days — Bruce Springstein Tribute, Latin, rock, blues, and a tribute to the Beatles in our East End. Most will be going strong until 11:30, so enjoy them all — all

night long. With all that shopping, make sure you stop and refuel at one of the many outdoor patios. Downtown Oakville’s finest restaurants will be setting up outside so you can enjoy great food along with great entertainment. Midnight Madness also showcases 20 Oakville community groups, making this an excellent op-

portunity to find out how to get involved in the community and learn how to make a difference. Pick up your FREE DOWNTOWN OAKVILLE DIRECTORY at any downtown shop. JAZZ Festival

Oakville Offers Small Town Charm – Big Time Jazz It’s the biggest jazz event of the year – the Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival August 3 to 7. Enthusiasts from all over Ontario, Quebec and the northern U.S. descend on beautiful Downtown Oakville to be part of one of the premier events of the year and turn this small historic town into one giant party.

T

ens of thousands of visitors help to create an exciting atmosphere as an amazing array of entertainers fill the open stages throughout the downtown area. As the music is playing, visitors stroll through quaint boutiques, relax with a coffee or beverage at one of the many cafes or enjoy dinner at one of the town’s award-winning fine restaurants. The party gets started on Wednesday, August 3 with the legendary Johnny Winter performing at the Oakville Centre of the Performing Arts. For 40 years Winter has been a guitar hero without equal, laying out the blueprint for classic blues, Texas funk and a slice of hard guitar rock. This is a show you don’t want to miss. The next night Alfie Zappacosta lights up the stage at the OCPA. Zappacosta is a lot of things to a lot of people – rock to some, smooth to others, AC to many. Winner of two Juno Awards and an American Music Award, Zappacosta is considered one of the best vocal talents in Canada and will be featuring hits such as Nothing Can Stand in Your Way, Passion and When I Fall in Love Again. Other headliners include: • Oliver Jones, Friday, August 5 at 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. His six-decade career has been rich and varied – growing up in Montreal beside world renowned pianist Oscar Peterson – Jones learned his tricks of the trade to become one of the jazz world’s great artists. • Larry Coryell and Julian Coryell, Saturday, August 6th at 10:15 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. As one of the pioneers of jazz-rock – perhaps the pioneer in the ears of some – Larry Coryell deserves a special place in the history books. He brought what amounted to a nearly alien sensibility to jazz electric guitar playing in the 1960s and his music continues to influence musicians and fans internationally and will continue to do so for a very long time. Larry’s son Julian graduated from Berklee College of Music and joined the Jazz scene as one of its youngest up-and-comers at the young age of 18. Having worked with artists such as Leonard Cohen, Aimee Mann and Dave Brubeck – Julian has performed as a solo artist and also as a part of the Coryell Auger Sample trio. He will be performing with his Dad and solo. • Warren Hill, Saturday, August 6 at 10:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. A saxophonist, Hill is a gifted performer who began playing guitar at the age of eight, and by his teens was fronting a local rock group. Now, not only is Hill an “off the hook” showman in the jazz world, he is also

idnight Madness on July 15 and the Jazz Festival on August 3 – 7 light up the summer drawing tens of thousands of visitors from all over. Later in the year there is the Taste of Downtown that features a culinary adventure among the many fine restaurants and cafes. But more than anything, there are more than 400 shops, businesses and restaurants – delivering hundreds of reasons to spend a day in one of the most beautiful and vibrant downtowns in Canada. A common misconception is that Downtown Oakville is overpriced – the Beverly Hills or Rodeo Drive of Ontario. But that is the farthest thing from the truth. There are some very affluent and upscale stores, but there are many reasonably priced shops that provide exceptional shopping for any budget.

Designer brands at a fraction of the cost

ave you browsed through an exclusive shop, loved the styles but just had a difficult time getting past the price tags? For many consumers, the quality and originality of a designer label is what they are seeking, but the cost is just so hard to justify. Enter the consignment boutique. This is where you will find designer brands and unique articles in mint condition at a fraction of their original price. What is consignment? It’s pre-owned fabulous! Fashion and accessories taken in on consignment for a period of time – one season perhaps. These shops provide a valuable service by recycling high-end clothing, shoes and accessories that you would only find at the most exclusive shop – oneof-a-kind treasures that have been collected from all over the world. There are three consignment boutiques in Downtown Oakville, all within a block of each other – making this beautiful, historic town a destination for shoppers who appreciate quality,

originality and price. By Consignment and Second Chance have been serving a loyal clientele for more than 20 years. And just recently they have been joined by Closet 112. The boutiques have distinct differences that make it a must to visit all three. Second Chance deals strictly with designer brands, By Consignment has carved out a nice niche with a unique vintage section and Closet 112 has included men’s clothing. “The other boutique owners have been absolutely wonderful,” says Jill Fioroni of Closet 112. Jill completely renovated 112 Dunn Street to create a modern retail feel to her store and has opened with a fresh new look. “We all have something different to offer, so we don’t hesitate to send shoppers to each other’s stores if they are looking for a particular outfit.” “We are still misunderstood by most consumers who think we are simply selling cast-offs,” explains Sandi Hicks of By Consignment. “But what we

are selling are one-of-a-kind treasures; designer clothes that are top quality, classic or fun and a fraction of their original price.” The clothing is handpicked and must be no more than two years old, adds Nicole Jevons of Second Chance. “We are very selective. We know what our clientele wants – high quality, trendy designers that you would find in small exclusive boutiques or from some of the high-end major retailers in the GTA.” It’s not just the budget-conscious shopper who is attracted to consignment shops. Regular customers of all ages know they are going to find an original piece of designer apparel – whether it is for a swanky party or something high-end and fun to wear with jeans. And it is easy to see why these three boutiques have established Downtown Oakville as a destination for women and now men who want a unique look, who value top quality and, above all, who can save a lot to spend on life’s other pleasures.
