Downtown Oakville The hottest in spring and summer apparel will be on the runway this May by Sue Hoover

I

Walking along Lakeshore Road on a beautiful, sunny, crisp March afternoon, I pass George Street at the Towne Square and take a good long look at what will be the future site of the 4th annual Downtown Oakville BIA and Mercedes-Benz Oakville Runway Show on May 7.

am visualizing the two-day construction of the 160-foot show tent; watching 400 chairs surround a 60-foot stage with lights, cameras, plasma video screens and it is then that I can almost see Jeanne Beker of CTV’s Fashion Television up on our Runway Stage welcoming a packed house to 6

Downtown Oakville loves Fashion – embraces the latest trends and designers and really is the jewel of Oakville in regards to shopping that is trendsetting, but also for everyone. The Runway Show has evolved from being a small fashion show adventure four years ago at

Loves Lov the Oakville Club. It has grown, thanks to the dedication and many hours of labour to Fashion Committee members, to become an event that not only showcases our own retail fashion boutiques, but also our salons, spas and restaurants to name only a few. More than 35 shops, boutiques and salons are involved in the production. Our local restaurateurs play a part by offering Fashion Plates exclusively for guests of the Runway Show. And every downtown business will be here with open doors Mother’s Day weekend. As my walk along Lakeshore Road comes to an end, I am again struck by the passion of our businesses to bring an exciting and fresh event to our customers; to offer something unique and special

just like the downtown itself. This year for example, we are partnering with Ryerson’s Fashion Program and showcasing two designers from their Wanderlust Fashion Show, as well as giving the Ryerson the expertise of two of our very own business owners to judge Wanderlust – Anna Rea of Tocca Finita and By Tocca and Joseph Diodoti of Johnathan Quinn. It is our way of giving back to the Fashion Community and encouraging our youth, our future, to come and experience Downtown Oakville. The Runway Show may only technically last for a night, but really it is an evening that is meant to showcase all that is wonderful about all of Downtown. Being one of the only ticketed events in Downtown Oakville – it delivers! With the pur-

chase of your $75 ticket, you will have access to our Pre and Post Show Fashion Lounge, sample some of our restaurants’ finest fare and sip on signature cocktails. Then walk directly into the Runway Show where you will preview the Spring/Summer 2011 collections from our own boutiques. In addition you will receive an exclusive chance to win a free all-inclusive trip for two to an ultra deluxe Sandals Resort courtesy of Carlson-Wagonlit Lecor Travel, Air Canada Vacations and Sandals Resorts! It doesn’t get any better than that. So come join us for our Show being held on May 7th – we will see you there! OT Sue Hoover is the Special Events Co-ordinator for the Downtown Oakville BIA. Back to Work The key was some chocolate colouring to pump up her natural colour. Going with a colouring that follows your own colour will ensure that your hair looks natural, Ashley advises. Ashley said curls are coming back in style, so it was important for Kate to keep some of her natural curl in play.

The Players

hen Kate Hanna gave birth for the first time 11 months ago all priorities changed. Her focus was completely on her daughter. Her wardrobe became track suits and running shoes, her hair had no style – Kate stopped looking after herself. Now that she is preparing to return to her job as an account representative for an advertising agency, Kate needed to get her business look back. That involved a trip to Marco Stefano for hair and makeup and to Vocado for her new wardrobe. In the past Kate’s style was extremely conservative. She often wore your basic blacks and whites – black pants or skirt and plain top. “But I wanted something different. I’m often in Montreal for my job and the styles there are cooler and trendy. I felt plain when I went; I wanted to look hip, so I was ready to leave my comfort zone.” The first step was to do something about her thick, curly hair. Kate’s quick and easy solution to taming her mop was to simply pin it up. “Her hair was long and puffy,” says stylist Ashley Barabash. “Kate has curly hair, so we wanted to take it up a little – about four inches – debulkify and texture it so she could wear it down or have it curly if she wants. We also wanted to gloss it up and give it some depth.”

Ready for work or party Kate typically wore Charlie Jade “ Whitney” little to no makeup, dress ($145), Canadian designer Mackage “Siga” but Snezana Pasic gave leather jacket ($590) Kate some easy tricks Jewellery from Lux that made a big differKate ring in white ($59), Medium ball stud ence. A little purple earrings ($19), Purple CZ on the eyelid lit up her drop necklace ($36) hazel eyes and filling in her eyebrows further accentuated her eyes and helped define her face. “The makeup was a real departure for me,” Kate said later, “but the colours really worked for me and Snezana showed me how easily I can do this myself.” At Vocado, Kate got a wakeup call. She suddenly saw what colour could do for her. “We tend to stick with what we know works. They suggested I try things that I would never have chosen ... and they were right. That’s the great thing about the independent fashion stores – the people here are knowledgeable and you can trust their advice.” Kate tried two outfits. The first was a casual ensemble of jeans, tank and jacket. This outfit was chosen because the higher waist jean provides comfort and the top adds some colour to her wardrobe. The flowing purple tank can easily be worn casual or dressed up by pairing it with the comfy fitted grey blazer. Kate could easily wear this look to the office on casual days. For the second outfit, a dressed up look that also provided versatility was chosen. Kate doesn’t have a lot of time to plan outfits and look through her closet every morning. This outfit is readily available and will make her feel trendy, yet professional. The print dress is great for the office or easily dressed up for a spring/summer wedding. A super soft leather jacket is a wardrobe essential that will bring anyone into an entirely new level of coolness. OT

Why dressy casual works for the busy businesswoman

A

s a busy Downtown Oakville businesswoman, Lori Lang doesn’t have much time to fuss with style. And these days are even more hectic for the owner of Marble Slab Creamery – she’s opening her third location. “My style is low key. I’m busy with my business and when I’m at work, it’s all about convenience and comfort,” Lori explains. In fact, she did something relatively drastic just a few months earlier – again for convenience. Lori had her shoulderlength hair cut short. “At work I have to wear a hat and so I wore my hair in a ponytail, but before the end of the day I had bits of hair sticking out. I looked haggard.” The short hair allowed her to wear it under a hat all day and simply fluff it up at the end of the day. The problem was it lacked style. Lori’s makeover began at Marco Stefano for makeup. Lori typically wears a little makeup, but Snezana Pasic at Marco Stefano applied some more to accentuate features on her face. The colouring, Lori said, was close to what she normally wears anyway so she was comfortable with the look and was impressed with the outcome. Next was the hair at Salon Deja Vu, the newest salon to Downtown Oakville. Owner Sam Safa said Lori’s hair was rather dull and boxy and didn’t 18

Woman on the Go fully highlight her facial features. After learning a bit more about Lori and her lifestyle, Sam suggested a fresher look with additional volume. Sam worked his magic with a colour combination of highlights and lowlights, further enhancing Lori’s natural colour. “The ‘right’ hairstyle isn’t just about colour and

cut,”Sam explains. “The whole process has to work in conjunction with a person’s personality and lifestyle. A flattering hairstyle can be the most important factor in a person’s appearance. Not only does it tell people about your character, it also balances your body, frames your face and complements your clothes and lifestyle.”

Nail technician and manicurist Anna Lajourdie gave Lori a natural, low maintenance look, based on her lifestyle. She applied a new product that is a hybrid between a polish and a gel called Shellac. Shellac goes on very thin like a nail polish and is more convenient because, once applied, it dries instantly. And it lasts about two weeks – longer than regular nail polish. Lori was impressed – even days later at work – saying her nails were still as good as the day they were done. Olsen Europe provided the clothing for Lori’s makeover. The goal, says manager Wazeefa Martinez, was to give Lori a casual outfit, but with a little more edge. Lori can go from day to evening by simply replacing the jeans with a skirt or a dress pant and accessories. For Lori’s Outfit, Wazeefa chose the outfit from the Techno Romance collection. It is soft and straight, feminine but sporty. Techno Romance brings all these apparent contradictions together. Flowing waterfall necklines are worn with slim cropped trousers or jeans and boxy jackets. Cool and crisp fabrics and zipper elements meet elegant silk and satin materials, romantic photo prints with floral motifs and washed flower prints team up with graphic patterns and crystal prints. Tops feature feminine draping, stylish studs that embellish clear-cut lines. Completing the outfit is a bamboo scarf. “The style of clothes Wazeefa chose, I wouldn’t have tried on my own,” Lori says. “The top was a little flashier than I would have chosen, but that’s why it helps to have someone who is knowledgeable pick out new styles. I liked the look and I’m ready to be a little more adventurous with my wardrobe.” OT

Choosing eyewear that complements your best features

or the past number of years, downtown resident Leslie Egger has become known for her stylish eyewear. An array of colours and shapes, Leslie has a pair of glasses for every outfit – almost. She has close to a dozen pairs – something for every occasion. That wasn’t always the case. “In the past, I bought one pair and only changed when they needed to be replaced. So I would choose something plain – something that I thought would blend with whatever I was wearing,” Leslie says. That sounds typical of most eyeglass wearers. Many today might purchase two glasses to provide some variety, but they are tossed once the prescription changes. Leslie used to be like that, but then she discovered Squint Eyewear and her world changed. She learned to shop for quality frames and simply change the lenses – allowing her to build a very nice eyewear wardrobe. This approach opened the door to a world of fun and adventure, Leslie claims. “Now I can have so many different looks. I’ve learned that eyewear should be fun,” she adds. “It is important for you to invest in good qual20

All in the Frame ity frames that match your style rather than what is trendy,” says Adriano Giansante, optician at Squint Eyeware. “People come into the store with premonitions of what they want. You need to break that. We want our customers to have an open mind and

discover what is possible. They are often surprised by what they discover.” Professional advice will help you choose a frame that suits your face and complexion and not your favourite clothes or hairstyle, since most often these are the things that change. The opticians at Squint Eyewear recommend choosing frames that complement your eyes and face shape in order to create the desirable oval face shape. For someone like Leslie, who is blessed with an oval face, the selection is easy. She can wear almost any style of eyewear, Adriano explains. “The frame should enhance your best features – eyes, cheekbones, eyebrows and nose. They need to complement the whole face … and help create the perfect oval shape.” Leslie has so many different coloured frames, on this day she was looking for something that was lively and had some “wow” factor. After trying violet, tortoise shell and aqua blue, she settled on red. Nothing pops quite like red. The key, Leslie said, was building a relationship with her optician; trusting the advice she receives and having confidence in her final selection. Her favourite store is Squint, which carries exclusive eyewear that is created by specialists in the industry – so they are designed for style and comfort rather than as a designer brand. For spring, look for fresh and vibrant candycloured plastics in hues of tangerine, aqua and magenta. Patterned and multi-layered plastics are spring up to add depth to the frame. Fashion

Style What the fashionistas are saying about the newest trends From the runways of New York to Paris to Milan, what are the experts saying about the spring trends? According to Fashionising.com, this year will see us move still further from the economic woes of recent history, but don’t expect a massive change in the tangent of fashion. It predicts the major excesses of the last decade are gone and 2011 will see us continue on with a drive of subtle consumption mixed with obvious quality.

T

his year’s trends will accommodate the fact that we’ll be buying less but spending more. That means less bland and more quality; fewer indulgences, but better statement pieces. When seeking style and quality there are no better places to start looking than among the fabu-

lous shops and boutiques in Downtown Oakville. It’s one thing to see some of the wild designs on the runway, but the store owners and managers downtown know their clientele; they buy for the Oakville market. So what are our local experts saying about spring fashions this year? u Downtown Oak ville

DIANE VON FURSTENBERG does a distinct return to a more classic DvF, right down to the wrap dresses that made her famous. Bright, bold colors in prints that come straight from the designers’ archives. This Joseph Ribkoff in an example of the bright colours and prints you will find at Chatsworth and Hall.

Chatsworth and Hall Spring this year is all about being bright, bold and beautiful colour, says Sue Pritchard of Chatsworth and Hall. “The spring runway shows in Milan, Paris and New York were sizzling with hot pinks, deep turquoise, rich royal blues, sassy corals – sometimes all together in one outfit!” Prints are another hot fashion trend this season, she says. “You either love a print or not; it’s all a matter of personal taste. But at least you’ll have lots of choice this spring. And remember, prints are great camouflage for our less than perfect bodies ... and a lovely print dress is a comfortable and easy summer option.” Sue says you will find these vibrant shades from almost every manufacturer in Chatsworth and Hall’s Spring Collection.

Mainstream Two words describe spring 2011 “Bohemian Rhapsody,” says Laura Scarfo, owner of Mainstream Clothier. “It’s a feel good ’70s vibe and we need it! Exotic prints, fringe, feathers, vibrant colours, colour blocking, floral prints.” Laura says military cargo in Khachi greenTencel fabrics is the alternative to jeans. Watch for long full skirts and full legged pants, she says. Trouser and boot-cut jeans are back and when it comes to accessories, think oversized necklace. The chunky sparkler is not just worn for evening anymore. You will be seeing long skirts, long necklaces and long earrings. “Scarves, scarves and more scarves are the rage for spring. Look for novelty floral trimmed with fringe, ruffle and beading. In footwear, look for metallics, wedge and gladiator.” “Spring fashion promises to be fabulous this year,” Laura says. u

Avante Among the hottest trends this year are tunics and leggings, or jeggings – lots of skinny pants, says Anna Cammarata, owner of Avante. After two years of recession, the fashions this year are full of colour. Neutrals and Khachi green are still popular, but there are big bold colours as well. Essentially, there is something for everyone, Anna says. Bold patterns have made their way back, capris are still an essential part of your wardrobe and it’s all about layers – that tank top with your tunic, Anna says. Fashionable leggings with sequins and

cutouts are hot – they are the closest thing to wearing pajamas outside, providing style and comfort, she says. “We haven’t seen such a selection of dresses in the store for a long time,” Anna says, adding that leggings and a dress are a cool look. But remember, just because something is in style doesn’t mean it will look good on you, Anna cautions. A knowledgeable store staff will help you select styles that complement your body type and colours and patterns that look good on you. “Our fashion experts are here to help you look your

best. We take the time to select the colours and styles that suit you best and put together an outfit that is guaranteed to get compliments.”

Barbette COLOUR…COLOUR…COLOUR…for spring 2011 is IN, says Liz Prescott of Barbette II! “After a long dreary winter, we at Barbette II are very happy to have some colour back in the store.” The past fall/winter collections seemed to be darker than ever, Liz says, adding, “the brighter the better for spring/summer 2011 and mix it all up.” You will find colour in accessories, handbags, jewellery, scarves, as well as in the collections. With the variety of shades, there is something for everyone. “A new collection for us, Analili, will offer wonderful colour in tops and dresses. Watch for them in our window, it is truly a WOW colourful collection. Liz says the perfect accessory for this collection is the new colourful line of handbags by Owen Barry – coming to Barbette from the U.K. His bright coloured suede handbags are a great way to get some COLOUR this spring. Of course, a little jewellery to top it all off is always a good idea. “We are launching a new line, Canadian Charms, so you can create your own necklace or bracelet,” Liz says.

Titika Active wear is the specialty at Titika and the goal of this recent addition to Downtown Oakville is to take active wear to the next level by combining fashion forward features with athletic function. This spring, Titika was inspired by the exotic wilderness. They have combined beautiful floral prints and cut-outs to create interesting detailing and feminine silhouettes. The trend this spring is for clothing that you can wear to the gym but looks fashionable enough to go out for coffee or drinks with the girls. “Our aim is to design active wear that is comfortable, functional and also fashionable. We believe this is very important for the modern day woman who leads a busy lifestyle,” says manager Brittany Morris. When it comes to shopping, embrace your mind and body, she says. “We are inspired by REAL people; that’s who we design for. We invent for all body types and offer sizes 0–18. Most importantly, every wardrobe needs a good spring cleaning, even when it comes to active wear. Out with the old and in with the new.” Watch for the men’s line of active wear coming this summer.

hama sportswear will take you there in style. The lifestyle brand, with its “life is one long weekend” philosophy, celebrates the idea that a vacation state of mind can be had with a few key ingredients: good company, beautiful locale and a relaxed, sophisticated wardrobe. The spring/summer 2011 collections for men and women are just the ticket to transport you. Destination: relaxation. Tommy Bahama swimwear, renowned for its styling and fit, looks to the past for inspiration this season. Details such as ruching on a sexy one-piece maillot and a tank with plunging neckline bring a touch of old Hollywood to the Tommy Bahama women’s swimwear collection. Two-piece styles – from a reversible halter top bikini to a beautifully constructed underwire top that comes in bra sizes – infuse the season with a young-at-heart sensibility. A colour palette of neutrals (black, café, white) and shades of blues popping up in skinny stripes keeps things fresh and modern. Slipping out of the daily routine doesn’t have to require a passport and long lines at the airport. At

Swimwear this summer remains feminine with subtle ruffles and beautiful florals, says Katie Badovinac, owner of Beachy Keen. “Modern retro styles feature ruching, draping, sweetheart necklines, classic halters and strapless styles. Bold stripes and graphic prints will make a statement on the beach or at the lake. A proper fit will always be the most flattering detail for the ultimate in confidence when looking for the perfect swimsuit.” This year promises lots of colour shades. Though you can pick up trendy and elegant beachwear in any of your favourite colours, blue green, orange and shades of brown would be definitely in and more popular. And if that’s not all, blend green hues with turquoise and light skies to look your best in the coming year. To add that extra bling on your body, step into the colour gold and see how those heads turn to steal a look of you at the beach or poolside. Instead of opting for full plain colours, give more attractiveness and sophistication by picking up prints that are well complemented with pure shades. How about a large, single print placed at one side or corner of your swimsuit, maybe at your waist side. This will enhance the feel of your waist, bringing it into the limelight. To balance it further, you will find plain tops with eye-catching prints at your cleavage. This will enhance the proportions of your swimwear making you the centre of attention in any crowd. Pick up something that suits your figure and get ready for summer!

Studio PH When it comes to your hair, Tom Omerod of Studio PH says the new season is bringing soft, warm undertones – either in a highlighting effect to subtle tone reflects. “This is my favourite season for hair trends and fashions. They are like gardens – time to bloom in styles that are loose, soft waves of texture, a carefree feeling all set to the comfort of the client and their feeling of expression.” “Although this is an exciting time to be creative, at Studio PH we have always believed that the comfort zone and self expression is left to the client. We give guidance, advice and options to the client, but the bottom line is that we listen to clients’ desires and allow them to be the decision makers. We create a partnership regarding their hair-care needs which leads to lasting friendships,” Tom says. OT

Colour isn’t restricted to the flower garden Believe it or not, the hot trend that’s emerging in men’s fashion is floral patterns. Whatever your taste and style, buy the very best you can afford, suggests Bill Townsend, assistant general manager at Garvey’s. “You don’t have to buy a lot. A few key pieces will serve most people well. But pay attention to quality, fit and the overall look and feel of a garment. If it represents good value, buy it.” Fashion should be fun, Bill says. Take a risk. Buy something that’s a little out of the box in terms of colour or style. Experiment a bit and enjoy the clothing you buy. As for the “fresh, hot and tasty” items in the store for the season, the people at Garvey’s are excited about a new line of shorts, pants and shirts by Tailor Vintage. Based in Eastern U.S., they have introduced a reversible short. Plain colour on one side and patterned on the other. Two garments in one, and they look great and feel great, Bill says. Other highlights include a new collection of sport shirts, dress shirts and ties by David Donahue. Shots of lively, bright colour and pattern dominate here. They deliver an especially crisp, fresh look for spring/summer. From Europe, Ragman is a new collection that brings a more youthful expression and fit to classic polos, T-shirts and knitwear and delivers some of the best value Bill as seen. “We’re also excited about the new collection of socks from VK Nagrani. One of our most popular accessories, Nagrani for spring is as bright, bold and fun as ever – a great way to inject a little individuality into a man’s wardrobe and a wonderful conversation piece.” And of course, you can always depend on favourites such as Peter Millar, Robert Talbott, Bugatti, Cutter and Buck and Agave denim to deliver solid collections with just the right blend of style, sophistication, fashion and innovation. f course, it isn’t all about the feminine patterns this year. Another hot item for men is the blazer. These were particularly abundant in soft, block colours such as pale mauve, grey, green and blue, which are really versatile colours. This makes your blazer wearable for any occasion, whether it’s a formal event or something more social. Blazers are also superbly tailored, attractive and their great lines are flattering on any man, making this a great trend for 2011.

For the younger man, styles from last year are carrying over into 2011 – the silhouette with a distressed pea jacket, slimmer denim, bold stripe/ detailed gingham checked shirts and wash suede casual shoes. He says that the secret to having a closet that yields the perfect outfit for any situation is to take a realistic look at your work, casual and weekend wardrobes and ask yourself questions that will identify outfits you need. Are you able to easily make several combinations for each? What items get you compliments? “Start by adding a few pieces in seasonal colours that blend with what you have. Having a trusted clothier to help you assemble your wardrobe is advisable to ensure you make choices that will help you look your best,” Patrizio says. “When a customer comes into our store, we have the knowledge, friendly staff and a wide array of well-made stylish clothing to fit any occasion and work environment. We are here to guide our customers to find comfort and confidence in their wardrobe.” The clean, tailored craftsmanship synonymous with European clothiers dominates M for Men’s inventory – Pal Zileri collections, Xacus shirts, AG Denim, Alberto, Cortigiani Sportswear and Gran Sasso sweaters to name a few of the many collections. To complete your stylish wardrobe, M for Men also carries shoes, handsome watches, belts, ties and cufflinks.

and L.G.R. and Sospiri of Italy. These attainments only add to Delta’s exclusively held luxury lines such as Maybach and Leisure Society. Zaf explains that the looks for spring and summer include a continuation of the current vintage theme with the ’50s wayfarer style and brow line frames. Cat-eye shapes will range from subtly sexy to the extremely peaked, and we’ll see round shapes in small metals and larger plastics with keyhole bridge detailing. The ’70s inspire translucent plastics especially for sunglasses – popping colours in berry tones and seaside shades, marble-

ized texturing, two-tone and gradient colourings. Technical looking urban and sporty designs in metals/titanium/carbon fibre will be bold and geometric. An intriguing trend seen at MIDO is the increasing use of natural materials. Buffalo Horn and exotic woods will show a softer but interesting refinement with neutral tones. While shopping for the latest fashions, remember that the one accessory many of us wear every day also comes from the runways of Milan. ashion week in Milan is not only about the clothing, the handbags and the shoes, but also – the EYEWEAR. The 41st annual MIDO eyewear exhibition (March 4–6) marked three days dedicated to every aspect of the eyewear industry. This is exactly where Zaf Khalfan, owner of Delta Optical, finds himself every year; revelling in the opportunity to discover promising up-and-coming designers and then bring home their latest collections. Zaf explores the booths along the outskirts of the pavilions, seeking out the “undiscovered” talent. He considers the design, quality and philosophy of the designers, gauging their ability to grow and build on their collections. Over the years, Zaf has been the first to introduce many emerging designers from all over the world to Canada. As a long-established boutique optical retailer, Zaf is personally invited to view the new collections and meet with the designers themselves. Only select retailers are afforded these private viewings. Zaf hand-picks each frame for all of the Delta Optical locations, often with select clients in mind. These are not frames that you see at just any optical store – the designs are unique, wearable pieces of art that are not soon to go out of fashion. They are handcrafted using the best titanium, acetates, stainless steel, horn, exotic woods and precious metals. Consignment never looked so good

owntown Oakville has been a destination for consignment shoppers for years, and the reason has been two popular shops – By Consignment Boutique and Second Chance. “It’s not a bunch of old castoffs – these are oneof-a-kind treasures; designer clothes that are top quality, classic or fun and a fraction of their original price,” says Sandi Hicks of By Consignment Boutique. “This is perhaps the biggest myth about consignment shops.” Clothing and accessories are handpicked and must be no more than two years old. “We do turn clothing away, because we know what our customers want and we have to be selective to cater to their demands,” Sandi adds. “If you are looking for that unique top or dress for a party or function, there is a good chance you will find it at one of our stores,” says Nicole Jevons of Second Chance. “The major chain stores will have blowout sales, but the clothes tend to be basic or for one season only – items you can find 32

anywhere. What we carry are unique articles that you would find only in the higher-end shops.” Sandi and Nicole say they often have clothes that were worn only once, or not at all. The owner may have decided she didn’t like it on her after only one wear. “It may not be right for you, but someone else will love it. I could start a rack of ONLY WORN ONCE – the party dress that only saw one party,” Sandi says. “These are clothes and accessories you will not see on someone else,” Nicole interjects. “Many of the finds have been collected from all over the world.” There is an array of designer brands you will find at Holt Renfrew and small boutiques. “Shoppers visiting the store for the first time are happily surprised by what they discover,” Nicole says. These two boutique shops are catering to the woman who wants a unique look, who values top quality – but above all, loves that she can do this at a fraction of the cost. OT

Home and Gifts What spring has in store for inside the house … and out

Roasting Apples Garden art will be strong this year, says Erika Funnel of Roasting Apples. Personalize your garden with something that reflects ... you, she adds. Coming into Roasting Apples for spring are Canadian-made metal flowers, bird houses, metal roosters, trellises, and birds, bugs and fish made from recycled steel. For outdoor entertain ing check out the store’s bamboo serving pieces in red, yellow and green. They also have Cana dian-made wooden boards with pewter accents for serving.

Swiss Interiors Bright splashes of colour are the main focus this spring, says Carol Vesters of Swiss Interiors. In troduce bright greens, blues, oranges, pinks and purples using accessories such as throws, pillows, vases, florals and prints. It is a great way to update our neutral decors and give our spirits a lift at the same time.

To Set a Table

T

he experts are telling us that colour trends will carry over from 2010 with the soothing aqua and green hues that draw their inspiration from the verdigris deposits found on weathered copper statues. For outdoor furniture and acces sories, look for sassy colours like lime green, or ange and Caribbean blue, and subdued hues such as sage green, barn red and mocha brown.

Bronze Frog While colour is the rage, Kathy Thomas of The Bronze Frog cautions not to get caught up in co lour schemes for your larger purchases. “While the new honeysuckle pink and sky blues are popu lar this year, opt instead for cushions and accents to make those splashes of colour. Remember that good quality outdoor furniture coverings are sun brella fabrics and will last 10 years or more. You will likely hate those colours by the time they need replacing. Choose taupes, beige, charcoal and wal nut colours as your base to accent.” Dress up a blank wall on a cabanna or patio with weather-hardy wall art. various styles and prices. Sculptures made from bronze or stone are at home outdoors all year. To save money, she says, always buy the best you can afford. “Buying once is so much cheaper than buying 10 times.”

In2Art Gallery Art is the finishing touch; the missing element that integrates it all, say Kelly and Susan of In2Art Gal lery. A painting can take a traditional room and give it a fresh, unexpected, modern, surprise or add warmth and peace to a modern interior. “Whether considering the work of a local artist or an established talent, we encourage our clients to buy a work because they can’t take their eyes off it. The perfect piece of art is the one that speaks to you. Like any great passion, a love affair with a painting begins with a spark of attraction and just continues to grow.” Some dos and don’ts include not buying art to match your decor, make a big, bold statement, know your taste and support emerging artists. In 2art Gallery curates a comprehensive collection of art by emerging and established artists.

With the warm weather just around the corner, it will soon be time to take the covers off the pa tio furniture and prepare your outdoor room for entertaining. Marianne Svarke of To Set A Table suggests investing in a good patio accessories and serving ware. “Plastic discolours over time, especially in the dishwasher. Go with polycarbonate – it goes in the dishwasher and lasts longer than plastic and acrylic,” Marianne recommends. And for the ta ble, Marianne says cotton/acrylic tablecloths from France are very popular. They have the look of cotton, but with an acrylic covering so they don’t need to be washed – a quick wipe will do. Marianne says she has a number of new lines coming in for 2011, and for those who have been calling about Brown Betty teapots, she has a new supplier and the shelves are stocked.

Bloom ’84 In addition to livening up a room, there are many health benefits to having plants and flowers in your home, says Wim Moester of Bloom ’84. A classic NASA study found that common house plants could improve air quality; removing up to 87 percent of air toxins in 24 hours. According to a University of Agriculture in Norway study, indoor plants can reduce fatigue, coughs, sore throats and other cold-related ill nesses by more than 30 percent. And last, but not least, house plants and flowers make people feel calmer and happier. Bloom ’84 offers free in-house consultations to help you select plants and flowers that will com plement your decor and carries a wide array of horticulture. OT

Raising money to help find a cure for cancer

ike most Canadians, Stephane Sauvé, the owner of Paradiso Restaurants in Oakville and Burlington, has watched people close to him fight cancer. His father beat prostate cancer and the mother of a friend is currently fighting a tough battle against bone cancer. “One in three Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Having people close to me suffer this devastating disease, I decided to help raise awareness and money a couple of years ago by participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer,” Stephane says. He’s ready to ride again – this time in two major rides. The first will be the Toronto to Niagara Falls ride June 11 and 12, which benefits The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret Hospital. The second is the Montreal to Quebec City ride July 9 and 10 to benefit The Jewish General Hospital. “I’m not a big cyclist, but this is such a worthy cause and I wanted to do my part in helping to find a cure,” Stephane says, adding that he started training in February to prepare himself for these 300 kilometre plus rides. “According to the National Cancer Institute of Canada, over 153,100 new cases of cancer and 70,400 deaths from cancer were estimated to occur in 2006. That’s why I’m riding – to do something BIG about cancer. I hope that you’ll share this incredible adventure with me by supporting me in my fundraising efforts.” Stephane 351211-3 (Montreal) or 557373-8 (Toronto) has set a personal fundraising goal of $10,000. To help him reach this goal, Paradiso Oakville and Burlington will be raising money in April by donating $1 from each lunch feature sold and $2 from each dinner feature sold. Green by Design Nestled in a little corner of Downtown Oakville, in what is known as Lakeshore Lanes, Studio PH has developed a unique reputation. Celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, the salon has created an atmosphere that is soothing and comfortable for its clients – a Zen-like setting that is fitting for this ecofriendly business. Five bay windows provide an open-air ambience, and yet, the location offers a quiet privacy, says owner Tom Omerod. “Inside, our calm, relaxed atmosphere and soothing colour tones provides a warm and friendly environment.” And with only one booking at a time, each client has undivided attention. But perhaps what truly separates Studio PH from others is its approach towards the environment. “We believe in doing our part for the environment – from serving beverages in paper cups to using wooden stir sticks. Our biggest initiative has been to partner with Green Circle Salons, which recycles the hair we sweep up, aluminum foils used for colouring, and the excess colouring itself,” Tom explains. “We are striving to reduce the environmental impact that the hair industry has created over the years. Our products are not only kind to your hair, but to the environment as well. “At Studio PH, we care about what we do in so many aspects,” Tom says.

Downtown Oakville has a strong community spirit and it showed in early March when merchants through the downtown decorated their shop windows with splashes of yellow to celebrate International Women’s Day. The recognition was in concert with efforts by the Zonta Club of Oakville, which is part of Zonta International, a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy.

Michael Retires After 51 years of working and more than 250,000 haircuts, long-time downtown businessman Michael Galione, owner of Michael’s Hairstyling, has decided to retire. Michael arrived in Canada from his native Italy on his 16th birthday in May 1961. He had been cutting hair since he was 14, so he had a trade, but he couldn’t speak any English. His relatives remember him telling them that he would be on the bus and see “sale” signs in the shop windows and wonder why so many shops were selling salt! (Sale means salt in Italian.) Michael came to Oakville in 1966, five years after arriving in Canada, and went to work at Henry’s Barber Shop, which was located in the basement of the Chamber of Commerce Building and across the hall from Vic Tanny’s Gym at 345 Lakeshore Road. Michael took over the shop from Henry and renamed the business Michael’s Hairstyling for Men. Over the years he relocated to 257 Lakeshore Road East and finally settled into his current location at 308 Church Street in 1987. The shop is still going strong, but is now called Shannon’s Hair Appeal for Men and is operated by Shannon Williams, who had been working with Michael for the past few years.

Patio comes to The Crepe Kitchen We have to apologize to Eduardo and Ana Siles, owners of The Crepe Kitchen, for misspelling their last name in the holiday issue of Our Town Downtown Oakville. This spring/summer, look for their popular outdoor patio again and check out the new menu – they are always introducing new crepes. And of course, you have to top off your meal with their signature French-press coffee made with organic Peruvian beans.

he warm weather is just around the corner and so are thoughts of spending those balmy evenings snuggled up on comfy outdoor furniture around the firepit. Whether it is just the two of you, the family or entertaining friends, a well planned backyard is essential to complementing your lifestyle. Utilizing every square foot of your home, including your outdoor living room, takes planning. The objective is to be able to use it all and enjoy. Following are some basic tips to ensure you have a great looking and functional yard. Less is more in your garden. Beautiful borders, sweeping lawns and large patio areas are the basics. Typically the do-it-yourself landscaper brings home a load of whatever looks great from the nursery. Avoid that and plan by structure and colour. Professional landscapers follow a process. First, make a sketch of your border. Fill in the back with taller shapes. Next comes a combination of shapes and colour. Remember some evergreens to give you continual green. Add perennials with various height and colour. Finally use annuals to give continual colour. Now you can go to the nursery with your plan. Create an easy flow from your indoor living room, dining room and kitchen to ensure more use of your outdoor room. This space needs to be large. Measure your furniture to make sure it will fit. This sounds sensible, but I can’t tell you how many times people discover that their table for eight won’t fit on the new patio with the chairs pulled out. Plan for the time you use your patio most. Evenings are wonderful. Firepits, throws, outdoor lighting, portable water features and outdoor fans make them especially pleasurable. And finally, fill the area in between with a beautiful lawn. Give your lawn the best foundation possible. Topsoil needs to be deep enough to sustain good growth. I recommend an irrigation system and it doesn’t cost a lot to add conduit to connect a speaker system in the future. So there you have the basics. Kick back and relax. You’ve earned it! OT
