AUSTRALIAN PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR, JO HOWELL
Rachael Smith PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Rachael Smith, NZIPP President NZIPP Master of Photography (with Distinction) Accredited Professional Photographer
It’s hard to put into words just how incredible the past few weeks have been for our community. Our annual conference was a resounding success, full of energy, connection, and inspiration. The venue was alive with conversation, learning, and laughter, and it was so heartening to see members from all over the country come together to share in our mutual passion for photography.
As always the Iris Awards and NZAPA were highlights. The standard of work across both awards platforms was extraordinary, showcasing the breadth of talent and dedication within our industry. These awards remind us why we do what we do, celebrating creativity, skill, and most importantly (to me anyway) the power of the photographic print.
A huge thank you must go to everyone who contributed to making these events such a success, our organisers, volunteers, sponsors, speakers, judges, those of you we roped into helping out when we needed extra hands on deck, and of course, every one of you who entered, attended, or supported in some way. Events like these only come together because of the collective effort of our community, and I am immensely proud of what we achieved together.
We are also very grateful to those who helped create moments of fun and connection beyond the awards and presentations. Thank you to Mark Rossetto for stepping in once again as our auctioneer at the print fundraiser. Marks energy helped us raise $8800.00 in the auction this year! A big shout out to our amazing quizmaster Clinton Lloyd, who once again delivered an entertaining evening of camaraderie and laughter, making this event a true highlight of the NZIPP social calendar.
Congratulations to all those who received awards, became category finalists, or walked away as winners, your achievements are an inspiration. In particular, I want to acknowledge Sarah McGregor, our 2025 New Zealand Professional Photographer of the Year, Jo Howell 2025 Australian professional Photographer of the Year and Dianne Kelsey, our 2025 New Zealand Amateur Photographer of the Year. These are phenomenal accomplishments and we celebrate them with you.
Switching gears a little, I would also like to update everyone on our funding journey. We have been advised that despite submitting a very thorough and well-presented application to Creative New Zealand, we were unsuccessful in our bid for funding in the recent round for Arts Organisations and Groups Fund. We were one of 336 eligible applications, of which only 81 were successful. While this was disappointing, it has given us a stronger understanding of the process, and we will be seeking advice and guidance ahead of the next funding round to strengthen our application further as well as exploring additional grant opportunities. If anyone has suggestions or information to share with us about funding opportunities we would love to hear from you!
Looking ahead, a reminder that our AGM is coming up. Notices were emailed out yesterday, along with the information on the constitutional update. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out, we encourage you to be engaged in the governance and direction of your Institute.
I am also delighted to announce that we will be hosting our second Industry Night on the evening of 11 November, following the AGM. This will be another opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate our industry together. Further details, including speaker announcements will be released soon, so please save the date and keep an eye out for more info.
And finally, something I am especially excited to share. We had such an overwhelmingly positive response to this year’s conference event, along with incredible support for the location, that we will be returning to Christchurch in 2026. The 2026 NZ Photo Show will be held at The Majestic on Durham on 7 & 8 August 2026. It’s wonderful to be able to confirm these details so far in advance, and we can’t wait to build on the momentum of this year’s success.

Chris Helliwell HONOURS COUNCIL REPORT
Chris Helliwell, NZIPP Honours Council Chairperson NZIPP Master of Photography (with Distinction) Accredited Professional Photographer
The 2025 Iris Awards have once again shown us why they are the heart of professional photography in Aotearoa. These Awards are more than a competition — they are a journey of learning, growth, and celebration. Each image entered reflects hours of dedication, creativity, and craft. But beyond the accolades, the true value lies in the process: embracing critique, developing resilience, and pushing ourselves to see and create differently.
On behalf of the Honours Council, I extend heartfelt thanks to every photographer who entered. By sharing your work, you contribute not only to your own growth, but also to the collective strength of our community.
I would also like to give special thanks to my fellow Honours Council team — Cindy Hargreaves, Belinda Pratt, Helen Smith, and Christina Vandy. Their dedication and expertise are the backbone of these Awards, and I am deeply grateful for their commitment.
A special acknowledgement must go to our judges, panel chairs, and print handlers, whose tireless efforts uphold the fairness and integrity of the Awards. Their passion for photography is evident in every conversation and critique, helping entrants take away insights that will shape their craft for years to come. This year we also celebrated a historic moment, with an image awarded a perfect score of 100, only the second time this score has been awarded and the first time to a single print entry — a powerful reminder of the world-class talent in our community.
The Iris Awards are, at their heart, about more than trophies and titles. They are about growth, courage, and community — about learning from critique, refining your vision, and becoming a stronger photographer. This is why the Iris Awards matter, and why they remain such a powerful force within our industry.
To our winners, congratulations on your achievements. Each award represents countless hours of hard work and creativity, and your success will inspire others to strive further.
We can’t wait to see the incredible work that will be shared in 2026. Until then, keep creating, keep challenging yourselves, and keep telling stories through your images.
Chris Helliwell Chairperson, Honours Council
FOR THE VISIONARIES
THE REFINED CLASSIC
THE KEY TO AVOIDING BURNOUT & CREATING VITALITY IN BUSINESS
‘If you are feeling stressed & time poor this is for you’ with Johl Dunn
Johl Dunn is an NZIPP Accredited Professional Photographer and highly regarded Photography business mindset coach, based in Australia.
https://www.johldunn.com
So often photographers come to me wanting more leads, better marketing or higher sales which is all things I help with, but it is putting the cart before the horse.
Let me explain, it is how we are showing up as the business owner that makes the difference in all those things; particularly our mindset & energy which then dictates the actions we take or don’t take and the results we get.
What I wanted to discuss is YOU as you are the business and in particular your energy. Some of you will scroll past and think you know this, or it isn’t important but trust me when I say this is the foundation of all successful business owners and people winning at life.
There are 5 main areas that influence and effect our energy.
Sleep
Exercise
Nutrition
Hydration
Stress
The top 4 give us energy and the last one depletes it. So often when we are stressed, overwhelmed and time poor we don’t sleep as well, we neglect our exercise, we eat crap to feel better and we don’t stop to look after our
mental health. It’s like running your phone all day with every app open — sooner or later, the battery is going to die and performance crashes.
GET YOUR ENERGY SCORE
I created an energy score quiz so you can see where you stand at the moment, and it will give you a score out of 100% based on the 5 areas above. The goal is to be at 80%+, this is where you have the focus, energy, and clarity to play life at a high level and the mental space and time to take the actions necessary to have an amazing business. The by-product of an 80%+ score is happier, less stressed and enjoying life more.
60% or below is the danger zone and where you most likely constantly feel stressed or overwhelmed, are time poor and aren’t enjoying the business or life as much as you want.
Someone who scores 80% has double the available units of energy available to them each day than someone who scores 40%. They will be twice as focused, productive, and energised – everyday!! Their chance of success is decidedly more, the good news is that you can shift your energy results dramatically and quickly with some simple habits, discipline and mindset shifts.
If you think of yourself like a battery, you wouldn’t leave the house with your phone on 40% so why do we do it to ourselves. This is quite simple stuff, but we overlook it or ignore it to chase what we think will make the difference in our business – more reels, better marketing etc but those are all external. Until we tend to the internal and our energy the results won’t come.
Here are some quick tips on each of the 5 areas.
SLEEP
No screens or food 1hr before bed.
Read or journal to wind the mind down. Similar bedtime and wake up time each day. Ideally 7hrs of sleep for men and 8hrs for women.
EXERCISE
Move your body every day.
NURTRION
Eat to suit your body - This isn’t about diet it’s about lifestyle.
Minimise sugary and processed foods.
HYRDRATION
2lts of water a day.
Minimise sugary drinks.
Don’t drink coffee in the 1st hour after waking up.
STRESS
Don’t touch your phone in first hour after waking up. Meditate.
Mindfulness breaks. Get out into nature.
My advice is to pick the area you want to improve the most and take one action or implement one habit to shift. If you take the energy quiz it has a quick training detailing how to do this and the mindset strategies around changing your energy score. We can’t change everything at once so start slow, but it all starts with an awareness to change and give ourselves a better chance of success.
TAKE THE 2 MINUTE ENERGY SCORE
There are some simple daily habits and strategies that I teach my clients to have the focus and energy to make their businesses a success, I hope this article & the quiz has highlighted some simple steps to take to bring that to your life. I would love to know what you are going to implement so DM me on Instagram with your action steps or any questions you have.

This issue we are going to discuss Portrait Submissions to Accreditation.
Putting together a submission for Accreditation is daunting, but think of it as an exercise in showcasing YOU as a photographer - it’s about showing the panel that you can consistently create portraits with technical strength and emotional depth with an aesthetic that is true to you.
Achieving Accreditation is more than simply presenting a submission of 15 images, and passing with 75% or higher, it’s about demonstrating that you are consistently working to a professional standard, with a clear aesthetic. When preparing a portrait portfolio , it helps to think about both the technical and emotional aspects of your work, and how they connect to form a cohesive submission.
Getting the Technicals Right
Your images need to demonstrate solid craft. The Technical side of accreditation proves you can reliably deliver consistent professional work to a paying client.
The panel looks closely at technical elements such as;
• Exposure and Lighting - controlling highlights, shadows and skin tones that flatter your subject
• Natural light, studio light or mixed light should all be well handled and not flat.
• Focus and Sharpness - are the right areas sharp and in focuseyes especially
• Composition and Cropping - strong deliberate framing of the subject, avoiding distracting elements, and is there room in the crop, not too tight, or is it the right crop for the image?
• Post Production - Editing should be clean, and professionalnatural skin tones, and skin softening not taking away textures and looking natural, the images are color balanced, not too cool, or warm - and the submission as a whole is similar and cohesive in editing.
Don’t forget the Heart, the Emotion.
Technicals are important, but connection and emotion is what makes your work stand out. Portraiture is about people, so authentic and meaningful moments are key. They lift your submission from just technical to something memorable and authentic.
Ask yourself:
• Does the subject’s personality shine through?
• Is there a sense of authenticity, vulnerability or power in the expression and body language
glance at?
• The emotional impact of your work shows that you can create meaningful portraits for real clients.
Cohesion Matters
Most submission feedback includes a lack of cohesion. The submission feels like a random mix of images. Accreditation is not about showing all the skills that you have, it’s about presenting a body of work that works well as a professional portfolio. Think about;
Consistency in style - does it look like the same photographer has taken the images?
Cohesion can be your style of lighting, posing and editing, or storytelling.
Flow of the portfolio - do the images work as a collection? Are there any that stand out for the wrong reason? Difference in style or weaker than the others, or more experimental than others?
Avoid repetition - while consistency is important, show diversity and variety in the submission - different subjects, moods, settings or environments but make sure you make them present as your portrait voice and style.
Your Aesthetic Voice
Accreditation is also about proving you have moved beyond the basics, and into professional artistry. That you have developed a consistent and authentic aesthetic style.
The panel will be asking if the submission shows you have a clear voice, and vision of your work, and your way of seeing and photographing portraits, will the style develop into a recognisable brand, will you deliver this level for paying clients consistently?
Your portfolio should reflect you, your way of seeing, your approach to portraits and your craftsmanship.
Final Tips
Quality over Quantity - submit your strongest 15 images ( the submission only allows 1 IRIS entry) so be ruthless, one weak image can drag the portfolio down.
Seek feedback from your regional accredited members. Take your time - building an accreditation portfolio shouldn’t happen overnight - it’s a reflection of sustained professional practice.

A single image can change the course of an investigation. It can provide the one piece of evidence linking an offender to a crime. It can make the difference between conviction and acquittal. Senior Constable Tony Hickland, of Canterbury, has been a police officer for 20 years and a police photographer since 2018. It’s a role that he says is both a privilege and a responsibility.
“We document the worst of humanity, the poor decisions people make, and the trauma that people inflict on each other, but capturing those images is a vital part of any investigation.”
Making the best use of technology and with an acute eye for detail, forensic photographers take photos that accurately reflect an incident. It could be anything from a crash, a crime scene or injuries, to weapons or a body. These images support investigations and are used in court as evidence.
Photographers like Tony have the skills of any professional photographer and the experience of a frontline police officer.
“We look for the obvious and the not so obvious,” says Tony. “What looks out of place? What’s missing here?
“It’s certainly not for everyone, but knowing that the next photo I take could be the clincher in a crime and help hold an offender to account – that’s what continues to drive me.”
Once dark, we’ll head outdoors where Tony will demonstrate some light painting techniques, as used by Police at their crime and vehicle scenes.
It probably goes without saying, there could be content that some people may find sensitive. Discretion in attendance may be advised.

A Look at the Benefits of Evoto for Portrait Photographers IS PHOTOSHOP STILL THE ANSWER?
Sarah McGregor is an NZIPP Accredited Professional Portrait Photographer and NZIPP Grand Master of Photography. See more of Sarah’s work: www.minimephotos.co.nz
Last year at the 2024 New Zealand Photography Show, I held an editing workshop with Amber Griffin and Jo Frances-Moore. At the time, Jo had just started using Evoto and suggested we all give it a try, saying it was lifechanging for portrait photographers.
I was sceptical. I had invested years into mastering Photoshop, and the thought of starting fresh with something new wasn’t appealing. But curiosity won out, and after setting aside an hour to explore, I was surprised. I was impressed.
At first glance, Evoto feels familiar. Its interface resembles Photoshop’s Camera Raw, offering adjustments for exposure, contrast, temperature, tint, curves, HSL, colour grading, detail, grain, lens correction and colour calibration. The built-in profile is basic, but you can upload your own if you prefer.
The real magic starts with the masking tools. With one click, you can isolate either the subject or the background with remarkable precision. There’s also a strong range of colour presets and, one of my favourite features, the ability to upload a reference image and match the style across other photos in your session.
What really makes Evoto stand out for portrait photographers is the dedicated portrait retouching panel. With simple sliders, you can refine skin, adjust body shape or enhance features. You can sync these adjustments across a whole group or tailor them individually by age or gender. It’s fast, intuitive, and produces results that are consistent yet natural.
Evoto also shines in background adjustments. You can fill small gaps in walls, clean scuffed backdrops (something I constantly need in my white-wall studio), or replace the entire background with a click. The clothing and accessories tab is another pleasant surprise, removing wrinkles and lint with minimal effort.
For those working tethered, Evoto supports it, along with efficient import and export options that streamline workflow. My biggest challenge was figuring out where it fit into my editing process, but after a couple of weeks I settled into a rhythm.
My workflow now starts with creating a Project in Evoto and loading raw files directly. If I’ve photographed multiple people, I start with a group shot, complete basic adjustments, then move into the portrait panel to refine individuals. Once I’m happy, I copy those settings and paste them across the gallery to ensure consistency. After a quick round of temperature adjustments where needed, I rate images—five stars for client delivery, four stars for possibles—and export.
Export options cover A4 and A3 TIFF, full-size JPEGs, and web JPEGs. For composites or more complex edits, I still head into Photoshop, but most of the heavy lifting is already done in Evoto.
What has sold me on Evoto is the way it has completely changed my efficiency. For example:
• A headshot session usually involves photographing around 20 options per client and exporting about 10. In Evoto, the gallery is fully finished in just 2–5 minutes, depending on the background used.
• For a family outdoor session, I typically overshoot, often producing 200+ photos. Every edit, aside from the occasional composite, can be completed in 15 minutes or less.
• Newborn sessions are another area where Evoto shines. Skin can often be tricky and require careful work, but with around 120 photos in a typical session, I can finish all edits (excluding composites) in 15 minutes. Most of the time taken for me is choosing the initial colour style I want to show the clients.
It’s important to note that I am not an Evoto ambassador, nor am I in any way affiliated with the company. My endorsement comes purely from my own experience. While there are still features I rely on Photoshop for, I believe it’s only a matter of time before Evoto incorporates those tools too.
My favourite features:
Colour match - really handy to get a consistent editing look.
Glass glare removal - game changer!
Unify body complexion - great for fixing up those tan lines, and matching face to body.
Hair enhancement - great for smoothing hair, the stray hair tool is not too bad, and the features like moving part lines, adding volume and shine enhancement are good.
Dark circle, under eye bags, wrinkle removal are really good.
Pros:
• You can download and have a play around without purchasing anything up front
• Easy-to-learn interface
• Consistent results across a session
• Features updated regularly
• Saves significant time once a system is in place
• Affordable, averaging around 3 cents per image
Cons:
• Credit system requires buying in advance
• You pay per exported image.
• Sometimes the log in is bothersome. I’ve found logging in with my google account a much better option than waiting for an email verification code to arrive.
• Occasionally, when flicking between editing tabs, the image reverts visually to the raw file, which can be confusing. Once you return to the portrait tab, your edits reappear, but it’s a quirk that still needs ironing out.
Recent updates include advanced library management, enhanced cropping, clothing edge smoothing, red-eye removal, and a V-shape facial adjustment that works wonders for softening double chins.
For me, Evoto has shifted from being an experiment to becoming my preferred editing tool. It’s streamlined my workflow, reduced the hours I spend behind a screen, and given me more consistency in my final work—all things professional photographers will appreciate.
Give it a go here: https://www.evoto.ai
If you are feeling a little confused when you’ve had a play with Evoto, contact me and I’ll be happy to show you on zoom.
