President’s Report

As we reflect on what’s been a wonderful week at the Iris Awards and NZ Photography Show, I know like many of you I’m suffering from withdrawal symptoms. Thankfully I’m able to relive the highlights on a daily basis through our social channels. It really brings home how lucky we are to be involved in such a strong community where ideas and stories can be shared freely. As has been said many times, photography can be an insular occupation with the vast majority sole operators. No two photographers are alike and we all have unique styles and genres. It’s the common love for the camera that brings us all together. The strength of the NZIPP has been to facilitate this community for over 83 years, and it’s an absolute honour to be a part of this incredible journey.

Once again we were very fortunate to be able to host the awards again in Nelson, casting your minds back to last year when the country was literally thrown into lockdown just weeks after our conference. This year we were just as fortunate as heavy rain set in just one day after our event. In saying that our thoughts are with all those in Nelson and we hope the rebuild will be swift.

This years Iris Awards have once again shown the level of talent that exists in NZ; year on year I’m amazed by the level of creativity on display. And wasn’t it great to see our friends from Australia on NZ shores again. It’s not easy to put yourself out there in front of your peers to have your work analysed and dissected. It’s this feedback that will serve you well throughout your career. I recall a time over 15 years ago when a fellow photographer was looking at my work; what seemed a fairly innocuous comment at the time, really impacted my work going forward and it’s stuck with me ever since, it was a simple comment about placement of objects in the back of a real estate shot. I’ve carried that around with me ever since and to this day it’s still one of the first things I think about on every shoot. And even though it was a comment related to real estate (which I don’t shoot), it applies to pretty much every shoot I work on.

So if you’re new or you’re a first time entrant, firstly congratulations, but most importantly take everything you can from the experience. And we can’t wait to see you again next year.

Congratulations Tony Carter for winning the coveted NZIPP New Zealand Professional Photographer of the Year. Also congratulations to our latest Grandmaster Amber Griffin; the level of creativity you bring to your commercial work is truly inspiring.

I can’t talk about the Iris Awards without thanking the people behind the scenes starting with Tracey and the Honours Council team, you’ve once again created a seamless experience. Thank you to our army of student volunteers, and we look forward to working beside you on your photography journeys. Thank you to all our judges from far and wide for your dedication to the craft.

To finish, rest assured our dedicated team of volunteers have been working hard behind the scenes to create another great event for 2023. And let me tell you 2023 is going to be amazing, we can’t wait to share the details with you.

EXECUTIVE

Honours Council Report

Every year The NZIPP Honour’s Council team manage the NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards, a unique event for our members to come together, to reconnect and to make new friendships and together as one big photographic family we get to celebrate one another’s achievements.

There is also the opportunity for Accredited Members to earn Merit points toward their NZIPP Honours Distinctions. Associate, Master, Master with Distinction and Grand Master. These are long-term goals that members can work toward and feel very proud of when achieved.

This year we trialed three judging rooms and although this put up some added challenges, it did allow us to Judge every image entered over the 3 days of judging and removed the need for prejudging.

We also Included the Australian Professional Photographer of the Year and category winners to our Awards for the first time; how amazing it was for us to enjoy the benefits of so many wonderful Australian contestants and Judges taking part. A huge Thank you to all of those who came to join us in person and those who entered. It certainly added a new dimension and helped build on those wonderful friendships and connections we have always had.

This Is my last year as the Chair of Honour’s and I’d like to extend a huge thank you to my team, the Board and the past chairs, Kaye Davis and Mike Langford for their support and encouragement.

The team will be looking for new members to join them so if you think this is something you could be willing to commit to for a couple of years, feel free to reach out and drop us a line honours@nzipp.org.nz. Without volunteers we would not have the magical event we call The Iris Awards.

What’s In it for you to volunteer on Honour’s? Amazing friendships, a great sense of achievement and satisfaction that as custodians of this historic event you have kept it alive and evolving for future generations of photographers to learn and grow from.

On behalf of the 2022 Honors Council - Tracey Scott, Rochelle Dillon, Sharisse Eberline, Ian Rotherham, Paul Jones.

Thank you so much to everyone who entered or who came to watch for taking part and supporting the Institute.

Game of Phones

I love to shoot people out doing stuff, or Street Photography as it’s called. To me Street Photography is the most satisfying medium, because it does what photography does best - record fleeting moments of real life.

And sometimes the photographs fall into a group, like this one of people using phones in public. I call it Game of Phones.

(I remember thinking how very odd it was seeing people talking on the phone in the street, as if they were talking to themselves. Mind you that was in 1987 in Hong Kong. How things have changed!)

I used to spend hours lighting interiors and carrying around heavy flash gear, so just recording what’s in front of me is a great change.

Around Aotearoa New Zealand in 90 days

Eve Wereta completed a road trip around Aotearoa New Zealand in 90 days, experienced floods and wonderful people, and produced some award-winning images. Eve tells Bob Zuur about her trip.

Eve, can you tell us a little about yourself?

I live on the Kapiti Coast and have been into photography since I was a student in 2011. I am an artist as well, having worked in other creative mediums including painting, drawing and montage. Over the years I have dabbled in a few other photographic genres and work of a personal nature.

And about your photography?

I love landscape photography. I’m also a documentary photographer and I do portraits on the side. I’ve been gravitating towards work that is nature-based. Being outdoors, near the sea or the mountains is my happy place and it’s where a lot of my creativity stems from.

Can you describe the trip?

I completed a mammoth 17,000 kms of driving and 528kms of walking while travelling in my Maui camper ‘Mrytle’.

What was the inspiration for this trip?

This trip was actually just a job for starters, where I was traveling around New Zealand for 90 days reporting on how to work remotely as an artist [BZ1] living in a camper. At the time, I thought that 90 days in a camper sounded like a surreal dream. An opportunity to live life and work while on the road. My expectations were high at the beginning as the dream became a reality. Looking back, I still pinch myself and can’t really believe that it has come and gone so quickly.

Did you have any plans or did you let the trip create itself?

I thought the trip was going to provide structure, but the structure I put into place for three or four months didn’t quite work. Luckily, I spent the first two weeks in familiar grounds in the Wairarapa, which was great because it gave me an opportunity to find my feet and get into the groove of living in a camper and traveling by myself. I don’t usually do things on my own, so that was pretty

Inhuge.the

Bay of Islands, I walked for two hours in a loop rack that was meant to take just half an hour. I had struggled a bit to photograph stuff and I questioned what I was doing here and where was I going with this? So I decided to go and touch and smell things – to look up close at growth on trees. From there, I created these beautiful plant and nature images that I was really happy with. Images that resonated and I thought, ah, I’m getting it now, so from that point onwards I was able to let go and just photograph the moment.

You set yourself an ambitious goal to report daily on the trip. Did this impact on your creativity?

Once I got to the Coromandel I discovered the workload started to really burden my creativity. This made me not want to photograph because I was so busy trying to get things done and this was all based off the plan that I had three to four months prior. So I made a call at Hahei Beach to throw the plan out the window and just go with the flow.

Then I sort of got into the rhythm of having my lunch and doing an hour’s work, which really helped because I think I was being too ambitious before. Like, I was like writing these novels! You know I talk a lot and so I write a lot! So, I learned how to report in a basic form.

You certainly faced some challenges, including the weather!

Yes, I did have a lot of challenges, one of which was getting used to my own environment and being just by myself. As a female it was actually quite scary parking up alone. There were a lot of storms, but I’m very much a storm person so I quite enjoy those elements. Sometimes you can’t control everything, right? And the only thing you can control is how you react to it. I’ve had a lot of personal storms in my life, and so a storm is a storm, and I embraced all those storms. I remember sitting in Milford Sound in the dark, watching a thunderstorm roll between the hills and thinking, wow, this is amazing, realising that I couldn’t control everything.

You have to let go of the situation and things happen. My camper got stuck a few times, but people helped me. I remember getting stuck in a storm at Hicks Bay and there was no one around. But I went for a walk, made the right contacts, and ended up having the whole town show up to tow me out, which was hilarious.

© Eve Wereta

What were a couple of highlights?

At Punakaiki, heading into the bay and seeing the sunset and having to pull over and cry. Being in Omaio Bay looking for coffee, and meeting, randomly, Dan the kaumatua from up there. He told me about the history of the area and took me onto the marae where he overheard that I was a photographer. He taught me how to sit with my images and let them speak for themselves. Now when I look at my work from that point, I’m letting the images talk to me. This was really not me at all. You know, I would have a play and be really prolific. That’s why the work is now taking longer to get out, because I’m sitting with my images and waiting for them to talk to me.

Which images encapsulate the trip? Can you give a short backstory to them?

There’s a series that I did in Mahia, when I was going through the two weeks of “what the hell am I doing” phase. There was a lot of interest in those images when I posted them on Facebook, and I think those were the ones that were the most spiritual for me. Mahia is a significant place for me. It was almost like I went back to reclaim Mahia because I had experienced so much sadness there. I had a wonderful time, a lot different than all the other times I’ve been to Mahia.

The images that won the bronzes at the Iris Awards, the horse and the broken mirror, resonate for me. I woke up in Stratford and had a need to go to Mokai, which is like a 3 or 4 hour drive away. I ended up at a marae, which happened to be open for the first time since the first lockdown. To cut a long story short, an elderly woman recalled how my whakapapa was connected to this marae, something my uncle had been searching for years! So that day was really inspirational for me - those images meant a lot. There was a lonely horse standing amongst miles of trees, with lots of rainbows, lots of tuis. The mirror image was on the way through Wereta Road. It’s called fractured reality and I think it illustrates quite well who I am as a photographer, that I see things for what they are, like the reality of a landscape. But then I go and do something really weird with it!

And your biggest learnings?

Being a creative can be a hard struggle sometimes. You know, I think we tend to be too hard on ourselves creatively. I think we worry too much about what people think. We also worry too much about the technicality of what a good photo is. I’m not at all like that. I want to create work that I love and I want to create work that has meaning for me.

Also letting go and just going for it. If it doesn’t work out, that’s all good too; sit there and watch and appreciate it.

This trip was a huge spiritual journey for me. I learned so many life lessons, and I’m all about life lessons. Why do things get hard? I question myself a lot and I think we don’t question ourselves enough.

AUCKLAND/NORTHLAND

Finally, after an unprecedented few years, the Nzipp region of Auckland and Northland is gaining momentum again. Being spread across a large area, lockdown for countless months and the general lacklustre feeling Covid brought it’s so good to be getting out there, meeting, greeting, talking shop and sharing our creativity with our fellow photogs.

All our regional events are open to members from other regions, whether you are in Waikato, Southland or anywhere in between we’d love you to be part of it all, so consider this an open invitation.

And here’s a quick recap of what has been happening lately...

Following the traditional Christmas drinks late last year, in May, we held a printing workshop in Whangarei featuring the highly experienced Rachel Smith and sponsored by CRKennedy. It was wonderful to get together in Northland, talk about photography, get up close and personal with the different paper types and learn first-hand all the intricacies of how to print your own work. The process fascinated everyone who came, both the physical print and the dozen or more detailed steps required to get it “just right”. Rachael is an incredible wealth of inspiration and passion for printed artwork. Her enthusiasm rubbed off on all of us, and we left on a high thinking about all the possibilities.

“It was awesome, thank you so much for organising. I finally know what calibrating means, what ICC profiles are, all about and how to fix a gamut warning! And we came away with one of our photos printed beautifully.” Tracey M.

May also involved an Image Critique evening in Auckland with judges Chris Trail and Russell Hamlet lending their expertise and experience to a very attentive group of attendees. It was a passionate turnout, and we want to thank those who joined us in person and via zoom, to watch a select group of images get critiqued, iris awards style. It’s always an amazing opportunity to get feedback on your images whether they’re going to be awards submissions or just for general response. Some incredible images were seen and some brilliant tips and tricks were shared.

June’s event resulted in a crowded room of listeners watching transfixed by all our PechaKutcha speakers. The night started with Chris Dillon presenting his automotive and commercial work. Maria Eves spoke about her military photography featuring trips to Antarctica and Afghanistan. Aisling O’Brian shared her passion for real, gritty family portraits. Dan McGraft featured some of his industrial environmental work. Kirsten Hough spoke about her home studio-to-be and her colourfilled dog portraits. Lastly, Thomas Brydon shared a short bio of his photographic journey including everything from underwater to weddings and nightscapes.

“I just wanted to thank you so much for organising last night. There was such a great variety of speakers and I was so inspired by each of them. I am so glad I joined the NZIPP, everyone is so welcoming and extremely talented.” Maria O.

Heartbreakingly July was postponed until later this year due to Covid taking myself and other organisers down for the count. While August has been filled with the buzz of the annual conference the Nz Photo Show, Iris Awards and re-igniting the imagination from catching up with awesome photographers from all over Nz. Did you see out videos on Facebook of all the interviews we did with photographers, judges, speakers, panel chair and sponsors?

September is going to be our annual Show & Tell Night as entrants from the Iris Awards are invited to share their entries from this year. We are looking forward to hearing stories of how their pieces were crafted, the meaning behind them and the excitement or commiseration of the final scores. This is a recap of some of the images from the live event, so if you were stuck at home watching the YouTube stream join us and see the incredible work in person. Trust us when we say there is nothing like seeing the finished photograph in person.

In October we are proud to have partnered with Stanely Henry from Attention Seeker. Entrepreneur, personal branding marketing powerhouse (non-photographer) and Digital Boost keynote speaker, he will be hosting us in his brand new multi-media studio located in their inner city office space. Stanely will share his insights on marketing from his outside perspective, so whether you are new to photography or very experienced you are guaranteed to learn something new.

November we will be finally hosting our Pub Quiz Social just in time for Christmas, so if you missed coming to Nelson and all the networking that comes with it, make sure you get to this one. Get yourself ready, as we’ll be testing your photographic knowledge with a pub quiz like no other.

Whether you are a newbie, Photoshop fan, gear head, film buff or alternative processes aficionado, this evening is going to be a barrel of fun. Open to teams of two or more; you’ll pick a snazzy team name and fight it out for the coveted ‘Box Brownie’ trophy and bragging rights. Plus we guarantee you’ll learn something along the way. Plus it’s open to everyone; members, sponsors, affiliates, students and enthusiasts from near and far. Arrive early to grab yourself some dinner from the restaurant, we’ll be organising a happy hour and let the camaraderie and competitiveness begin!

We’ll be kissing goodbye to 2022 with low key drinks in late December and then 2023 will be welcomed with workshops including wildlife photography on Tiritirimatangi Island, Portrait and Business with Russell Hamlet, Accreditation workshop, Tonic retreat, Architectural photo walk and a wedding workshop in the ‘off-season’. Most of our regional events are held on the third Tuesday of the month unless specified otherwise. We also try to stream as many of the events as possible via Zoom. And don’t forget our coffee groups held every month is your area, contact myself or Gino to find the one closest to you.

Make sure you join the email newsletter and Facebook page to stay up to date with what is happening. And we hope to see you at one!

WAIKATO

Cathy Ullyett from Embrace Photography in the Waikato won the James White Memorial Award as the highest first time entrant in Iris this year. Specialising in weddings, family and maternity photography, Cath’s work captures the little moments to create truly unique stories.

Cath has loved taking photos since she was a child, enjoying taking photos of family and friends to retain memories and emotions of that moment. For her it is very much about those connections. She completed studying in 2013 and began Embrace Photography when she moved back to New Zealand from Indonesia in 2017.

Getting to know couples that she works with and hearing their stories is a passion for Cath. She enjoys finding out what they love about life and gets really invested in the couples that she works with. It is important to her that they get along really well. One of her favourite jobs was the sunrise wedding of Magali and Marcelo on the beach in Waihi. In a spectacular setting, they had their first look just as the sun was coming up over the horizon. After their shoot, they met up with just a few friends and family to make things official. In a hilarious moment, their beautiful dog Lola ate the bride’s bouquet. Cath entered two of their images in this year’s Iris Awards which were both awarded bronze.

Cath talks about her four winning images in the James White Memorial Award. ‘For the image of the bride (Asami) on the sofa at Zealong Tea Estate, I really felt that although she was so incredibly happy to be marrying Jamie, she was also sad that her family couldn’t be there with her. I wanted to capture a classic portrait of her that showed her gentleness and also convey the mixture of her emotions.’

‘My backlit image of Jo and Roger outside the Henley Hotel is another one I love. Backlit images have been done in so many different ways, and I love this one in particular because of the symmetry and warm lights coming down from the top. I am so grateful that these two let me whisk them away from their guests for a few minutes to get this shot.’

‘The image of the dress being done up is one of my favourites. I love the play on light and the reflections in the window. I was on a very small balcony trying to get this shot through the glass without falling off the side. Janine’s dress was just stunning too, so detailed and beautiful.’

‘I LOVE the light coming through in the sunrise image. I’m sure other photographers can relate to the excitement and giddiness we feel when we have beautiful light. To capture these two in such a beautiful location was just amazing.’

Cath is looking forward to continuing with weddings and getting to know more awesome couples. Check out more of her work at www.embracephotography.co.nz

Every 6 months we aim to do a Photographers retreat. A weekend we just aim to get away and just talk and shoot photography. Good times.

The weekend of the 27th-29th May saw our last Photographers Retreat in Kaka Point and what an amazing time had by all. Kaka point was set to be a great weekend and it surely didn’t let us down.

We were blessed with some amazing early morning light, great weather (although a little cool), outstanding food (and I mean outstanding), non stop laughter (my cheeks simply hurt), great company and maybe just a few too many red wines.

Simone spoiled us with her very talented cooking. Friday night she blew us away with a Lemon Chicken Pasta and Saturday night was an insanely good Beef curry. We are currently planning the next due around November.

Everyone is welcome, not just Otago Members!
