Well done Iris 2017 entrants, you can now breathe a sigh of relief as the first part is complete. We thank you for your patience at the end there, where a few technical hiccups with the online system caused a bit of stress. Honours are still busy in finalising mode, and we hope you are all following updates on Facebook. Not only have we released the judging schedule … its going to be epic, you can also find out more about our fabulous judges as their bio’s have been released on the FB as well. Please show your support too, to our sponsors for without them Iris wouldn’t happen!! We totally understand that not everyone can be with us in person for judging, but we would really like you to be involved and be part of it all. So here are a few ideas: •

8

Get fellow photographers in your area together, have a party, watch the live stream, invite your friends, family or more importantly your clients. Dress up (think Rugby 7’s), put yourselves in the judges seat, make score cards with Gold, Silver, Bronze, Professional Standard and score the images, have your own black tie gala dinner. Share your images … #irisawards2017

PRO Report / Magazine of the NZIPP

We also encourage you to share your previous Iris experiences on Facebook. Maybe add in one of your images that caused huge debate with the judges, maybe something funny happened, share your thoughts, both the highs and the lows … its all part of what makes this experience so valuable to you as a photographer and business owner. Really help us get the word out there about what the Iris Awards are and how important NZIPP is .. whether you are in Welly or not … blog it , vlog it, tweet it, facebook it, instagram it.. lets see if we can’t break the internet. Stay tuned into the NZIPP or Iris Professional Photography Awards Facebook pages where each day we will post the Live Stream links for each of the categories being judged. Come Monday night, of 19 June, you’ll be as excited as us as we get to see (and hear) who all this year’s premier winners are.

See you soon.

Shar Devine (on behalf of the Honours Team Kaye Davis, Blair Quax, Paul Daly and Harry Jenssen)

EXECUTIVE UPDATE

Directors Report Mel Waite F.NZIPP

Following on form my last article talking about the importance of best business practice and investing both time and money in the business aspects of your photography business. I would like to talk a little bit about a fantastic workshop coming up this week as part of EXPOSURE and INFOCUS 2017 with the amazing Mark Rossetto. Yes know business workshop are not always as fun as the photography based ones but leaning that side of your business is vital to the success of you whole bussing. If you only ever focus on the photography it is like trying to grow a song healthy tree and only ever working about what’s above the ground forgetting that a tree also has roots that need good soil, water and nutrients to feed the whole trees growth.

Mark’s upcoming 3 hour workshop, “The Client experience for business growth” on Thursday 15th June at 1-4pm, will teach you why running a successful photography studio is not just about taking amazing photos, it’s about the whole client experience. This is where people see the real value - they want great service with a great product. Mark will demystify what it takes to have the ultimate experience for your clients and show you the 8 core areas within your business that cover the entire client experience as a whole. He will challenge you to identify the areas that need improvement with lots of thought provoking questions, ideas and suggestions to help you on your journey.

Key workshop takeaways:

Have you ever wondered why some photography businesses are doing so well and others are falling behind? You might have brilliant photography but your sales aren’t where they need to be. Or perhaps you’re amazing with people, but your systems and procedures are letting you down. Just like the wheel of a car, if one area of the business is flat, then things are going to be a bit bumpy. Mark Rossetto is a Master Photographer with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP), a qualified Life and Business Coach and practitioner of NLP. By the age of 25, Mark had a dream of running his own photography studio. However, he quickly realised that he needed far more than just great photography skills to run a successful business. Mark hired a coach to help him develop the mindset and strategic direction needed to turn his passion for photography from a hobby to a home business, then into his Melbourne studio all within 18 months. Mark and his team were photographing approximately 500 family portraits per year, and were at full capacity with their wedding bookings. 8 years later, Mark successfully sold his studio in December 2015 and took a sea-change to sunny Queensland, Australia with his wife and two children.

REGIONAL UPDATES

Canterbury / Westland Region Words by Juliette Capaldi

Late May in the Canterbury/Westland region was the month where we asked the members to come and contribute to a session where we discussed how to differentiate yourself in a crowded marketplace, and how to use your NZIPP Membership to your advantage. We had a panel discussion (Richard Linton, Jenna Young and Doug Richardson), with Kate Christie as the Chair. The setting at Murray Irwins studio was great, the panel was beautifully lit, and we had some great discussions on a wide range of ideas. Some of the things discussed included: •

Social reasons for joining NZIPP, a chance to catch up with other people, that are often working on their own.

Getting validation through becoming accredited, and the value of that coming from peer review.

Achieving accreditation is harder than initially thought, but the process teaches you what you didn’t know, and can give you the confidence to sell prints.

Being accredited and an award winning professional are great things to put on your website.

The importance of educating our clients: Why you are a member, why you are accredited, the backing of a national institution.

16

Being in a service industry, and having nothing tangible until you deliver the end product, how you differentiate yourself in the marketplace with multiple providers. The importance of being seen as an expert in your field.

PRO Report / Magazine of the NZIPP

Investment in your industry.

The Code of Ethics and the meditation that is available when necessary.

Knowledge and experience vs cheaper photographers.

The importance of how you dress, type of car you drive and its cleanliness.

How to point out that things can go wrong. It’s ok to put yourselves above others, but just don’t put others down.

By dealing with me as a professional, I offer....

Things don’t usually go wrong, but there have been occasions when...

You are not your client: Don’t judge on what you would/could spend.

Who is the photographer to decide/judge on what the client can afford to spend.

Portraits being in “work hours” in the old days, the father would take time off work for the important event of a family portrait.

Clients paying more for weekends/Sundays, or the photographer not always being available.

Backing up: Moment of capture until delivery, and long-term backup.

Don’t go on the defensive with a client.

Acceleration of the experience curve by being with the NZIPP.

And many more things.... It was great to see some old and new faces, to socialise, and to brainstorm and discuss lots of ideas.

REGIONAL UPDATES

Waikato / BOP Region Words by Myra Bayly

The BOP/Waikato’s meeting was held at the Pig And Whistle in Rotorua on the 9th of May. Following the formalities, we had images that were brought in for critique in preparation for Iris. The judges were Craig Robertson, Tracey Scott, Sarah Beaufoy and Brian Holden. There were some stunning images on display and good discussion and input was had over the content. It was also wonderful to see members of Rotorua’s Camera Club in attendance and we commend them for putting in some of their own images for judging.

Fujifilm has been voted the best corporate company to work for in this area so this is a great position for him. It entails an enormous amount of travel around New Zealand and he has a flash new company car. It was good for all of us to see the cameras and lenses he will be selling and to have a play with them. He proudly showed us a SOOC print that was taken with the newest medium format camera and it was very impressive! We look forward to having Craig attending Iris with his Fuijfilm display stand.

It was great to have Craig, our former Chairperson, speaking to us about his new job in Auckland. After living for 20 years in Rotorua, Craig was looking for a change. A position came up with Fujifilm as an “X Series Training and Sales Assistant.” This saw Craig embarking on a trip to Japan to be interviewed for the position. He was literally off the plane and straight into being interviewed by the experienced team at Fujifilm. Craig’s job involves marketing and working at events and he had just returned from a conference in Wellington.

We are going to miss his expertise, time, professionalism and humour at our monthly meetings but we wish him well for an exciting new future.

MEMBER PROFILE

Doug Richardson

New Zealand Wedding Photographer www.heatheranddoug.com

I’ve had a camera on my back for a bit longer than having one in my hand... I was once a sherper to my wife’s camera gear, carrying it from village to village through our many adventures to foreign lands.. After a year-long adventure around the world, it was pretty amazing to finally see the collections of images that showed Heather’s beautiful, colourful view of the world. It was a few months later, while we were hiking in Nepal that I started to pay complete interest in her way of seeing and documenting her life and the amazing experiences that we were sharing. The realization that we both saw things in different lights sparked the inspiration to document my own life and our lives together. So I picked up a camera to photograph Mount Everest in 2010 and haven’t put it down since… The Records is the front to all of our images, a glimpse into our own lives, the emotions of others, amazing places this world has to offer and ideas of light that just want to be captured. With us both loving the creative life, we set out with a goal to dedicate our arts toward Wedding Photography, because who doesn’t want to be involved with capturing people all celebrating love, joy and togetherness. It’s not everyday one has all their favourite people in one room and we absolutely love that energy! Working as a team is the highlight of my life. We both bring such diverse aspects of our photo taking, processing and business structure along with our creative and family lives. All the while mirroring each other’s joys, triumphs, loves and losses, and the strength of that unity definitely aids in helping us to succeed in any aspect of life we wish to delve into.

PRO Report / Magazine of the NZIPP

When it comes to marketing, Facebook is the first platform that comes to mind. We were lucky enough to create a page just as Facebook started to get traction. Blog posts were going up on our website and we used that as a public domain to share our images, links and ideas. Our website has always been completely customized by ourselves, which gives that extra detail that clients would recognize against other sites and we believe this helps show off our work beautifully. Again, we’ve had huge support from some individuals, one in particular, the social media Guru, Mark Lincoln. Mark set up our initial website’s SEO so beautifully that people were able to find our site on the internet before they even knew they needed to look in the first place. The ingredients for success in photography that I have found can be broken down into four different points. •

Firstly, a complete want to be creative in some aspect of image taking, along with a wish to learn by breaking the rules.

Followed closely in second is a thorough knowledge of the camera and gear that you will use, I’ve found that by keeping photography as a core in my personal life that I have gotten to learn what potential my cameras have within my want to create. I love using them on a near daily basis and am always keen to learn.

Thirdly, both a personal goal and a business idea for which you are persistently striving to achieve. By building the two into one, it gives me the motivation to make them a reality.

Fourth but certainly not last, is maintaining the motivation and spark to accomplish your own ambitions through all life’s twists and turns… Enjoy the drive though, look out the window, there’s so much beauty to see along the way.

I find it hard to pin down just one photograhic style I am drawn to. I love experimenting with and creating light - flashes, colour, textures and particles, often the same photo over and over with fine tweaks until I’ve had a sense of achievement and understanding of the image that I’ve created in-camera. On the flip side, I’m a complete advocate for candid people shots, film photos that you won’t see for months, colourful and majestic places around the world, once in a lifetime moments, people I’ve met that tell me a story, my family, again the list goes on. I guess all of them come with a sense of mood that I do try to depict in my photos, if anything, maybe emotive might be a style I try to strive for, with a decent amount of warmth, colour and magic. I’d have to say the NZIPP Infocus Conference in Wellington 2016, was my most memorable shoot. Hands down! I had never shot an event of that magnitude before, 4 days of capturing as much of the inspiration that was buzzing all over the place! There was constant excitement in the air. From the dark of the judging rooms, through the beautifully lit hallway lined with awardwinning images, and into the biggest room with camera gear. People to talk to in every aspect of imagery, incredibly inspirational speakers, stunning life sized prints and did I mention the smiles. There was so much joy around just to be in the presence of like-minded people. As to why the experience stood out to me, it was ‘that buzz’, it sits right in your chest the entire time, Shear Excitement! To be honest, that’s the best drug in the World! Needless to say, to capture all the festivities that other photographers were experiencing was such a trip. I cannot wait to get back there and do it all over again a few weeks time!

Since moving into our new home and studio, I have been enticed by a park bench that we can see from our bedroom window. All I’ve wanted is the perfect natural light, so I waited for 3 months before I finally decided the time was right. A cold and foggy autumn sunrise. I stepped onto the kitchen roof to get the composition that I wanted, with my bench and the sun peeking through the trees. The dog walker just happened to be at the perfect spot at my perfect time. I fell in love with the shot as soon as the camera blinked. At the same time, that dog walker is standing pretty much on the exact spot where I have shot another of my latest favourites. I always find beautiful reasons to go for a walk at 2am and this night’s foggy wanderings just needed to be captured… At the moment I am shooting with the Canon’s 5D MK4 Its usability is phenomenal! Canon’s Camera Connect App + Wifi + lighting = Mind blown! It has built in timelapse, multiple exposure settings, a beautiful silent shutter, face recognition and touch screen autofocus while in live view. The super easy flick to video. Needless to say, these additions are all quite different to my 35mm Pentax and Kodak Brownie. Otherwise, my lighting goodies bag is forever being used and added to, anything simple from personalized speedlight gels to broken CDs, candle lids, steel wool or buttons.

My biggest challenge as a photographer is facing that expectation that I put on myself. After every and any gig, I’ve gotten myself into the swing of meditating on the situation, retracing my steps or just downloading the card to see the clarity, colour and connection of life’s experiences and images. Only then do I feel okay, all is good, there was nothing to worry about in the first place. That forever striving factor for personal connection, individuality and perfection definitely plays against me often, I always feel there was more that I should have done. Even though I’ve gotten more than I’d ever dreamed in the first place. Consistently coming to a point of contentment is where it all lies with me. In reality, life has been amazing for me to have experienced such an array of interests over the last while. If I was not a photographer, I would have been either a bar owner, event organizer, international travel consultant, high-end men’s wear designer, mixologist, Bespoke-tailor, Fine Dining Maitre d’, international rower, pianist, landscape architect or English-speaking-walkingtourguide-of-Hamburg… In the dream world, I have been many things too, pyrotechnician, guitarist, drummer, sound and lighting technician or daredevil parachute stuntman. That list definitely continues further. Right now, I’m just so stoked to be a Dad, a photographer and a friend.

My advice for aspiring photographers would be, remember that we are all aspiring. We are all taking it one step at a time, starting new projects from scratch, living each day as we wish, learning with new challenges and pushing ourselves to create and be better, not to forget the consistency of all those fun business practices too. So if you ever feel you’re a few steps behind somebody else, remember that your story, your passions, experiences, skills, ideas, goals and wants are completely different to theirs. Keep doing, create your own interest, express your individuality, break the rules and keep your heart close to your decisions. If you want it bad enough, be present and you’ll make it all the way. Oh and play with your camera as often as you can.

WHAT’S IN MY BAG

Jenna Young

Accredited Photographer www.jennayoung.co.nz

My bag is full of sand, sticks and leaves a 5dmk3, 5dmk2 as a backup. 135mm 2.0, 50mm 1.2, 24-70 2.8, and a little portable LED light My style of photography is all about connection and making sure it’s authentic. Colour also excites me I try to make my images feel childlike - almost a little bit dreamy. Next year I plan on mixing it up a little and photographing more woman and playing with shadows.

Recently its been a bit boring, I’ve been focusing on the business side of portraiture and sorting out my packages and pricing. Its been really worth while & will allow me to do more creative projects without getting in trouble with Mr Young over all my free shoots of beautiful children that I just must photograph or I will die! Its been a year of growth, slightly boring but i know 2018 will be amazing.
