‘BLACK GIRLS SMILE’ AT T E N D W H I T E H O U S E M E N TA L H E A LT H P R O G R A M

This past July, Black Girls Smile Inc.’s Founder and Executive Director, Lauren Carson, had the honor to visit our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., to watch President Biden speak on how the administration is working on expanding mental health care access for millions of people. Far too many cannot access mental health care resources because of a lack of medical care coverage, health care policies that do not cover mental health services, or because they can not afford the costs of seeking assistance outside their medical insurer health plans. Evident from the event, this appears to be the story of many. With the onslaught of the pandemic, the amount of people needing or

seeking mental health care services has increased. Specifically, there has been a rise in youth experiencing feelings of isolation, fear, and anxiety–with young Black girls exhibiting higher rates of suicidal ideation. At the event, story after story expressed how expanding coverage for mental health care services

can save their family and loved one’s lives. President Biden spoke about the importance of transforming policies to ensure access to mental health care resources and services equity. These changes would include:  Requiring health care insurers to perform outcome-based analysis on their health plans and make adjustments when they identify failings under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) to include providing more mental health providers or reducing administrative challenges to attain mental health care.  Promoting more transparency with what health plans can and cannot cover.  Addressing vulnerabilities in health plans to provide consumer protections

that comply with MHPAEA. Implementing these measures will help young Black women and girls like those that Black Girls Smile serves. “I’m pleased that President Biden and his administration are taking active policy actions to address the mental health crisis we are experiencing. Too often, those in our community don’t seek mental health care because of the expense or the challenges faced with navigating the health insurance system. With these adjustments to policy, more people will be able to seek the services– in some cases–they desperately need. I was proud to be able to witness this moment,” expressed Carson. OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The second most common cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States is breast cancer, a condition in which the cells in the breast grow out of control. Regardless of race or gender, breast

cancer affects individuals everywhere. However, Black women continue to have the highest mortality rate. The 43% decrease in breast cancer fatalities has been attributed to increased awareness, early

detection, and efficient treatment but, data compiled by the American Cancer Society shows Black women have a 40% higher death rate which highlights the need to close the mortality gap between Black women and white women. Black women tend to be diagnosed at a later stage, due to a lack of health insurance or access to health care facilities. This affects early screening and treatments such as radiation, surgery and hormone therapy. During the month of October, people can participate in a wide range of events to raise awareness for breast cancer and receive early screenings. Also, there are

The 2023 scholars will be awarded annual scholarships, with several having applied and been placed in paid internships for the summer at Disney. The scholarship recipients are juniors and seniors pursuing degrees in business, communications, creative writing, journalism, film/media and science who will also receive mentorship opportunities and consideration for possible full-time roles with Disney upon graduation. The Disney UNCF Corporate Scholars program builds on Disney’s long-standing history of supporting aspiring storytellers and innovators in collaboration with UNCF and is part of the Disney Future Storytellers initiative. Disney’s support of UNCF scholars includes scholarships, mentorship, internship opportunities, professional development, and career exploration workshops. In an effort to inspire future storytellers, Disney frequently provides guest speakers for UNCF events and invites. Just announced with this year’s cohort is a series of FX-supported college scholarships within the Disney UNCF Corporate Scholars program. These new scholarships will honor the legacy of acclaimed director and producer John Singleton. John’s relationship with FX began in 2016 when he scored an Emmy® Award nomination for the award-winning and acclaimed hit limited series, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. He then Co-Created and was Executive Producer on FX’s acclaimed hit drama series Snowfall. Singleton is the youngest and first Black person to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. The intention is for these scholarships to encourage and empower the next generation of Black artists following in John’s footsteps as part of the Disney UNCF Corporate Scholars program. “Every artist has that person, the one that makes it over the hill so they could tell you everything is ok. Mine was John Singleton,” said Damson Idris, actor, Snowfall. “It was a rare honor to work with

the legendary John Singleton on several iconic FX series and to see him in action as a leader, mentor, and friend to so many,” said John Landgraf, Chairman, FX Content & FX Productions. “John was generous to a fault with his time and wisdom, having never forgotten where he came from and the hard work it took to break barriers. FX is proud to endow these scholarships in John’s name so that his legacy will inspire the next generation and offer meaningful assistance as they follow the trail he blazed.” For the first time, Andscape’s Rhoden Fellows will also be part of the Disney UNCF Corporate Scholars program. Rhoden Fellows is a training program for the next generation of sports journalists from HBCUs, founded and headed by Andscape editor-at-large and former New York Times awardwinning columnist William C. Scholars will receive scholarships and are currently summer interns at Andscape. The fellowship’s learning curriculum includes writing from various onsite events, producing weekly podcasts, pitching creative storytelling ideas and contributing content published on the Andscape digital hub, plus continued learning, professional development, and journalism projects throughout the upcoming school year. Following a 10-week, intensive summer immersion program with Andscape and ESPN, the fellows return to serve oncampus as local correspondents for

Andscape throughout the academic year. “We are thrilled to welcome the seventh class of Rhoden Fellows! They reflect the future of journalism and the vision of Andscape,” said Raina Kelley, Vice President and Editor-In-Chief, Andscape. “We embrace their diverse experiences and boundless curiosity. We look forward to nurturing them and providing the platform for them to shine brighter.” Additionally, the National Geographic Content HBCU Scholarship program will become part of the Disney UNCF Corporate Scholars program going forward. USF PRO CHAMPION JOINS MOTORSPORTS Newly crowned champion of the 2023 USF Pro 2000 Presented by Cooper Tires Myles Rowe will move up the ranks and join HMD Motorsports for the 2024 INDY NXT by Firestone season as he continues his journey to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Rowe made history during the 2023 season as the first African American to win a race in the USF Pro 2000 Championship’s history and the first African American driver to win a North American open-wheel championship. Rowe will drive the No. 99 Force Indy

entry with continued support from Penske Entertainment’s Race for Equality & Change initiative, an ongoing effort to support, grow and sustain diverse representation in motorsports. Race for Equality & Change was launched in summer of 2020 with a focus on generating impactful programming and opportunities across both the INDYCAR and Indianapolis Motor Speedway ecosystems. Next season will be Rowe’s fourth as part of the Force Indy program and the second year Force Indy has partnered

with HMD Motorsports in INDY NXT by Firestone. “We are excited to continue our partnership with Force Indy and have Myles as part of the HMD Motorsports program in 2024,” said General Manager Mike Maurini. “He has been a treat to follow through the ladder programs, and we are anxious to help him continue his goals to ascend to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.” Moving up through the ranks over the past three seasons, Rowe quickly

became a standout talent in the junior series. Rowe earned an impressive five wins and four additional podium results on his way to a commanding championship win in the 2023 USF Pro 2000 series in his rookie season. In 2022, Rowe just missed out on the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship by six points after garnering five wins and five additional podium results. “Force Indy is really looking forward to continuing the relationship with HMD Motorsports,” said Force Indy’s Rod Reid. “We have a season working together under our belt, and our goals in and out of the pits align.” “I’m super excited to announce my next step to HMD Motorsports with Force Indy and be part of their family,” Rowe said. “I am extremely excited to grow and progress with them as a team and fight for many more race wins.” As a data-driven driver with the raw talent to apply it, Rowe will benefit greatly from HMD Motorsports’ expansive field of drivers and the abundance of data the team provides. With just three seasons of INDY NXT by Firestone competition since the team's inception, HMD Motorsports has accumulated 25 wins and earned back-to-back Team Championships and the 2023 Driver Championship. This weekend, the team will look to continue its championship streak as the season concludes at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca as Christian Rasmussen enters the doubleheader with a 65-point lead while teammate Nolan Siegel leads the Rookie of the Year standings. Maurini said, “Myles is a great talent, and we have had our eye on him for quite some time and are confident that he will have success not only in 2024 but for years to come.” Source: USF Pro 2000

EDUCAT ION A AT B S W O R K T O I N C R E A S E P A S S R AT E S O F B L A C K P S Y C H O L O G I S T S As a part of its efforts to support the Black Mental Health Workforce, The Association of Black Psychologists, Inc. (ABPsi) has partnered with AATBS, a Triad company, to tackle a significant barrier for future Black psychologists, the Examination for the Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP). The ABPsi and AATBS partnership includes a substantial discount on EPPP study materials, plus discounted access to continuing education courses for those who have already attained their licensure. “At Triad, we are committed to promoting a diverse behavioral health workforce. That starts with working towards more equitable outcomes on licensure exams, which historically have seen large pass-rate gaps between white-identifying test-takers and all other populations,” said Brandon Jones, CEO of Triad. Black psychologists comprise only 5% of all psychologists, despite Black/African descent people representing nearly 13% of the US population. Many factors contribute to this disparity, including the high cost of undergraduate and graduate-level training, high barriers to entry for psychology training programs, hostile learning environments for Black and Brown students, and biased content in addition to the costs associated with the licensing exam, which has been shown to produce racial disparities in pass rates. “While we will continue to fight for fairness

in the profession, we are excited to make this support available to our members,” said Donell Barnett, ABPsi President. Dr. Barnett continued, “We want to see our students and early career professionals succeed, and this is one way we can support them by breaking down barriers and removing stumbling blocks to their success.” “We are excited to partner with the Association of Black Psychologists to reduce the cost burden of exam prep to achieve licensure, continuing education to maintain licensure, and to work with ABPsi and its members to help more Black professionals attain and maintain their license – and through those efforts, help promote diversity in the workforce and also help those seeking therapy find better representation among therapists,” said Brandon Jones. This effort to tackle EPPP pass rates stems from ABPsi listening to its members. “For a long time, we have heard our students and Early Career Professionals express frustration about the EPPP and the systemic barriers to entering the field. So we took on the challenge through our Black Mental Health Workforce initiative and by advocating for tangible support, like this partnership. Ultimately, these efforts will translate to a workforce that clients and patients can relate to and get the support they are looking for,” said President Barnett.
