MAYOR DAVID DINKINS, REP. CHARLES RANGEL, HONORED WITH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

CELEBRATING

BLACK WOMEN UNITE TO DEMAND LEGISLATIVE ACTION

GEORGIA BLACK

WOMEN'S ROUNDTABLE (GA

BWR), a women's initiative of the Georgia Coalition for the People's Agenda (People's Agenda), convened over 200 Black women from diverse organizations and communities at the Georgia Capitol for BLACK WOMEN U3: UNITED. UNAPOLOGETIC.

UNSTOPPABLE, an event focused on leveraging their collective power to shape the legislative agenda and drive accountability from lawmakers. It began with a live broadcast of WAOK's morning show, "The Wake Up with Dee," followed by a press conference unveiling the Georgia Black Women's Agenda, a report addressing critical challenges facing Black families across Georgia. The day concluded with a luncheon featuring a lively discussion.

The Black Stars News 2015 Annual Awards Dinner will honor Mayor David Dinkins, Rep. Charles Rangel, Rep. Yvette Clarke, R. Donahue Peebles, Barbara Arnwine, Inez Barron, Sabrina Lamb, Dr. Rudy Crew, Stephen Byrd, Alia Jones, and the Central Park Five survivors of gross injustice on December 18 from 6:00pm –10:00pm at MIST Harlem, 46 West 116th Street

former state representative adds, "Today you are on notice that Black women are here to stay. Our time is now."

GA BWR convened women in Macon in 2024 to create a comprehensive agenda for Black women, focusing on the issues most crucial to the Black community coupled with actionable solutions to drive meaningful change. After extensive planning sessions and surveys, the

“Each honoree chosen for recognition has demonstrated exceptional leadership and vision in her or his respective profession or endeavor and in some significant measure has contributed towards creating a more just society in this country,” says Black Star News founder and publisher Milton Allimadi. “Obviously much work needs to be done here and around the world.”

Helen Butler, convener of GA BWR and executive director of the People's Agenda, notes that it's fitting that the women assembled during Atlanta's week-long celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's birth to send a message that Black women will stay laser-focused on justice and equity for Black families. Butler said, "Black women across Georgia are standing together making it clear to legislators and stake holders that we are united, unapologetic, and unstoppable. We intend to shape the policy agenda raising the visibility of issues important to Black women, build political power, and drive accountability from lawmakers."

The gala starts at 6:00pm with a cocktail hour to be followed by the dinner and awards ceremonies. There will be musical entertainment by opera singer Cassandra Douglas and from harmonica phenomenon William Galison. David Dinkins is honored for Lifetime Achievement — he was New York City’s first African American mayor and also welcomed Nelson Mandela to the city after his release in 1990.

Host of "The Wake Up Call with Dee," Dr. Dee DawkinsHaigler proclaims, "God has assembled us together at this state capitol for such a time as this. We are here on the very first day of session to let everyone know that Black women are concerned about things that are important to us." The

stated, "We are pleased to be a part of this historic event to address things such as education, health and wellness, women's rights, and human trafficking." Voting rights remain a crucial focus, with ongoing efforts to combat voter suppression and safeguard democratic participation. The agenda underscores the pivotal role of Black women in the electoral process and calls for stronger protections to ensure their voices are heard. With the inauguration of a new president approaching, Andrea Young, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia, reminded the audience of the importance of elections, stating, "What we do matters. Is it Alzheimer’s? Or just signs of aging? Get screened and find out.

If you have trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating or making decisions that affect everyday life, the sooner you can find out what’s going on, the better.

Early screening of your cognitive health allows for earlier detection and diagnosis of potential Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. Early diagnosis means more time to plan for the future, express your preferences for care, adapt your home environment and seek support. We can help you learn about available resources.

Early diagnosis also provides opportunities to try new treatments. For those who are experiencing possible early cognitive decline, we offer the opportunity to participate in ongoing research studies/clinical trials that may help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms. Our Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease — one of 10 centers in New York State — is funded in part by a grant from the New York State Department of Health.

EDUCATION FUNDS AWARDED TO IMPROVE HIV PREVENTION AMONGST BLACK WOMEN

University at Albany’s Melonie Walcott, assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy, Management and Behavior at the College of Integrated Health Sciences, has received $1.4 million from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to lead a four-year study to address disparities in HIV prevention medication uptake among Black cisgender women in New York State.

Walcott's team will develop and test a culturally relevant behavioral intervention, consisting of several educational modules, to encourage uptake of PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), a medication proven to be highly effective at preventing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) when taken as prescribed.

“Black women are disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic, yet they are significantly less likely to be prescribed or use PrEP,” Walcott said. “This population experiences unique vulnerabilities including living in communities with higher HIV viral loads, systemic inequities and socioeconomic challenges, yet they are often overlooked in HIV prevention efforts, which tend to focus on same gender loving men.”

Walcott’s approach to HIV prevention is driven by lessons learned from her earlier work, including a study focused on women living with HIV in Alabama. This research illuminated the ways in which social and community-related factors such as poverty, stigma, lack of employment opportunities and insufficient access to transportation influence HIV acquisition, engagement in HIV care and HIV health outcomes.

“Lack of transportation can undermine one’s ability to secure and keep a job, which further limits access to resources for daily living such as money, housing, health insurance and food,” Walcott said. “This can result in engaging in transactional sex, forming relationships with partners that sell drugs, or even selling drugs to gain access to resources. These behaviors increase the likelihood of being incarcerated, which further impairs one’s ability to be employed in the future and increases vulnerability for HIV acquisition. This vicious cycle can significantly undermine both HIV prevention and treatment efforts.”

Walcott’s proposed study, called “PrEP-WISE” (short for pre-exposure prophylaxis for women in charge of sexual decision making and engagements), seeks to develop and test a culturally and contextually relevant behavioral intervention to motivate cisgender Black women to access and use PrEP. An interdisciplinary team of researchers, HIV prevention experts, faith-based organizations and community

collaborators will work together to develop the intervention, which will help women reduce their vulnerability to HIV, regardless of their social and economic circumstances.

The project’s first phase involves conducting in-depth interviews with 25 cisgender Black women and 10 healthcare providers across New York State. These discussions will explore experiences, barriers and facilitators in HIV prevention and care, with a focus on identifying gaps and opportunities to improve PrEP uptake. Providers involved in the study will include medical professionals, pharmacists and peer navigators, representing diverse perspectives

visiting community spaces such as salons, churches and corner stores to share information about the project,” Walcott said. “I’ve been very encouraged by community members’ willingness to help spread the word.”

 PLANNING A COMPREHENSIVE INTERVENTION

The team will use information gathered during the interviews to develop educational and capacitybuilding modules addressing the medical aspects of PrEP, as well as broader factors influencing HIV risk.

The four-part intervention will also include peer support.

“Our goal is to empower women

understanding the medication and reducing barriers to its use.

 Financial literacy: Offering tools to enhance financial stability and overall health security.

Improving communication between women and healthcare providers is a key aspect of the proposed intervention.

“This work is about more than preventing HIV — it’s about empowering women to take control of their health,” Walcott said. “Many women face challenges in accessing PrEP due to insufficient provider awareness or reluctance to prescribe the medication. By fostering dialogue

along the entire HIV care continuum.

“To effectively support Black women in assessing HIV risk and accessing care, we must engage the entire process,” Walcott said. “This includes raising awareness, helping women access HIV prevention services, and ensuring long term medication adherence and support.

“By involving a variety of stakeholders, our study aims to identify and understand the nuanced challenges that Black women face, including systemic barriers within healthcare systems as well as social-cultural factors including gender norms and power dynamics in relationships. This comprehensive approach ensures that our intervention will reflect the realworld experiences of those it seeks to serve.”

Because the intervention is focused on prevention, Walcott is working to engage participants upstream.

“In addition to reaching out to medical providers, I’m also actively

holistically,” Walcott said. “By addressing systemic inequities and providing resources beyond medication, we aim to develop an educational program that enables achievable, sustainable care and overall wellbeing.”

The anticipated intervention will be peer-led and delivered either in person or online, depending on preferences expressed during the interviews.

Based on reviews of existing literature, Walcott’s team proposes topics such as:

 Assessing HIV vulnerability: Helping participants evaluate their own personal level of risk, with respect to environmental and social factors, as well as the risk level of their partner/s.

 Gender norms and power dynamics: Building skills to communicate effectively with health providers and sexual partners about HIV prevention.

 PrEP basics: Combating stigma,

and education, our intervention aims to help bridge these gaps between women and providers across the health care continuum.”

Once the intervention is finalized, Walcott’s team will evaluate the efficacy of the intervention through a randomized controlled trial involving 160 cisgender Black women in New York State. Findings will provide insights for public health practitioners, policymakers and organizations aiming to advance HIV prevention and health equity.

Engaging community partners and stakeholders, such as cisgender Black women, HIV/AIDS organizations, healthcare providers and faith-based groups, is a key part of the project’s strategy to create a robust support network. Existing collaborators on the project include the New York State Department of Health, the Alliance for Positive Health and Callen-Lorde Community Health Center

Their documentary, Embracing the Dream, debuts January 26, 2025, on Amazon Prime Video, capturing their extraordinary journey of overcoming challenges and building a legacy in entertainment.

Dasha and Takela Johnson, founders of Fresh Oil Apostolic Center in 2002, stood firm in their faith despite homelessness, public judgment, and strained family relationships as they supported their sons' creative aspirations. Their story demonstrates how love and perseverance can transform even the direst circumstances into platforms for greatness. Their sacrifices fueled extraordinary success. That same year, Miami's Mayor Francis Suarez and the City of Miami honored him with his own day and a proclamation celebrating his achievements.

Aaron's journey includes sharing stages with luminaries like the late Oscar winner Harry Belafonte, and he has earned numerous accolades, including the 365 Black Award, where he was honored alongside icons like Ava DuVernay and Marvin Sapp. A four-time author, Aaron's story reflects a global impact, inspiring audiences with a message

BOOKS

Book Review DEI FACING ELIMINATION IN CORPORATIONS

With Black History Month around the corner and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) practices under scrutiny, corporate America faces a defining moment. TaChelle Lawson, a Las Vegas-based author and business strategist, is leading the conversation with her debut book, Black is NOT a Credential: The Corporate Scam of DEI. The book, which hit #1 in Business Ethics and #2 in Diversity & Inclusion on Amazon within three days of release, offers a fresh, results-driven perspective on DEI, urging companies to shift from performative actions to sustainable strategies rooted in respect and capability

"Corporations are at a crossroads," Lawson states. "Some are doubling down on DEI commitments, while others are

backing away entirely. Consider the division and confusion this creates for employees and stakeholders alike. As Black History Month approaches, it's a great time to ask: How do we honor Dr. King's vision in 2025?"

Lawson's book provides a playbook for leaders to move beyond superficial metrics and focus on the values of unity and character over color. Released on January 14, 2025, Black is NOT a Credential dismantles the "corporate DEI scam" and challenges leaders to accept accountability and rethink what diversity means before abandoning it or doubling down.

"Dr. King's legacy wasn't about quotas or checkboxes," Lawson continues. "Think about it. His message is rooted in respect–where

behavior and systems are created that judge people based on their contributions, not their categories. Companies must decide whether to lead with integrity or continue the cycle of empty promises and further the divide."

Timely Themes for National

Discussion: Lawson will be available for interviews and commentary on MLK Day and throughout Black History Month, addressing topics such as:

 Why many DEI initiatives fail and how to fix them.

 The impact of corporate indecision on DEI during Black History Month

Practical strategies for leaders to

build diversity without division.

 How to hold corporations accountable for meaningful change.

TaChelle Lawson is a Las Vegasbased author, speaker, and business strategist with over 20 years of experience. As the founder and president of FIG, a leading business strategy and diversity communications firm, Lawson takes a no-nonsense approach to DEI, positioning her as a thought leader in its future. Her fresh voice and thoughtprovoking insights have made her a sought-after speaker, and Black is NOT a Credential marks the first installment in her hard-hitting "NOT a Credential" series.

BULLS TO RETIRE DERRICK ROSE’S NO.1 JERSEY

The Chicago Bulls announced recently that Derrick Rose’s No. 1 jersey will be officially retired, making him the fifth Bulls player to receive this franchise honor. The Rose jersey retirement ceremony will be held during the next NBA season (2025-26), and details will be announced at a later date. Rose will join Jerry Sloan (No. 4), Bob Love (No. 10), Michael Jordan (No. 23), and Scottie Pippen (No. 33). The

“Derrick is both a hometown hero and a symbol of an entire era of Bulls basketball,” said Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf “Retiring a jersey recognizes a player’s impact beyond on-court achievements. It honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the organization and forged deep, lasting connections with fans. It recognizes that emotional bond and the great influence a player has had on the

"

but what always impressed me most was how he remained humble and let his basketball play speak for him," said Michael Reinsdorf "To watch Derrick the player was a thrill, but to get to know Derrick the person was an honor. His accomplishments on and off the court are what made him truly special. His connection with Chicago was undeniable when he was here, and it has only grown stronger and more profound over time. It will be an emotional moment to see Derrick watch his jersey go up into the rafters, surrounded by the family, friends, and fans who mean so much to him.”

Rose, the Bulls former No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2008 NBA Draft and eventual Rookie of the Year winner, spent eight seasons in Chicago while amassing one of the most prolific careers in Bulls history. A three-time NBA All-Star (2010, 2011, 2012), Rose became the youngest player in league history to win the NBA’s Most Valuable Player Award in 2011 to go along with All-NBA First Team honors that season. He guided the Bulls to the best record (62-20) in the NBA in 2010-11, consecutive seasons (2010-12) with the top record in the Eastern Conference and was a part of seven-straight NBA Playoff appearances for the Bulls from 2008-15.

The Chicago native played in 406 regular season games for his hometown team, posting career averages of 19.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists. Rose holds the third-highest assists per game average and ninth-highest scoring average in team history. He is one of two Bulls players (Michael Jordan, 198889) to record at least 2,000 points and 600 assists in a single season after recording clips of 25.0 points and 7.7 assists in 2010-11.

Chicago finished with a 245-161 (.603) record with Rose on the court, leading to the team’s first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 1998 with Rose averaging 27.1 points and 7.7 assists in 16 games during the 2011 NBA Playoffs Rose’s postseason totals of 434 points, 69 rebounds and 123 assists that year make him one of three players in NBA history (LeBron James, 2006-07 & Jamal Murray, 2019-20) to record such minimums in a single NBA Playoffs at age 22 or younger. He finished with career playoff averages of 23.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 7.1 assists and 1.1 steals in 41 NBA playoff games, marking the second-highest average in both points and assists across the Bulls record books.
