“Each honoree chosen for recognition has demonstrated exceptional leadership and vision in her or his respective profession or endeavor and in some significant measure has contributed towards creating a more just society in this country,” says Black Star News founder and publisher Milton Allimadi. “Obviously much work needs to be done here and around the world.”

“A routine traffic stop should not be a death sentence for Black people in this country,” said Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League “I am disappointed - disappointed that the officers involved won’t be held accountable, disappointed that Jayland was killed so brutally, and disappointed that our black lives do not matter. There is no question that eight Akron Police Officers used disproportionate force against Jayland and while we are pleased to see the community has formed its own civilian review board, this is only the first step. We demand that the Department of Justice conduct a thorough investigation into the murder of Jayland Walker and urge national leaders to pass legislation creating an accountability standard for police officers into law.”

The gala starts at 6:00pm with a cocktail hour to be followed by the dinner and awards ceremonies. There will be musical entertainment by opera singer Cassandra Douglas and from harmonica phenomenon William Galison. David Dinkins is honored for Lifetime Achievement — he was New York City’s first African American mayor and also welcomed Nelson Mandela to the city after his release in 1990. Rep. Charles Rangel, also honored for Lifetime Achievement, has served in Congress since 1971. He is a recipient of The Bronze medal for helping save soldiers behind enemy line during the Korean War

5 THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU GET YOUR FIRST PAYCHECK

Getting your first paycheck is an exciting experience and an opportunity to kickstart your financial journey. Mapping out your short and long-term financial goals early on will allow you to build a strong foundation for your future.

Here are five things to help you make the most of that first paycheck:

Open a Bank Account: Checking accounts allow you to deposit money, make transfers, withdraw cash, pay bills and take care of other banking transactions either in person, online or through your bank's mobile app. Most accounts come with a debit card that can be used anywhere cards are accepted. What’s important is that you’re fitted with the account that best suits your needs. Learn more about the documents you need to open an account.

Set up Direct Deposit: For quick access to the money you earn, set up direct deposit. It will make your funds available in your account on pay day, making it easier to pay your bills, send money and meet financial obligations on time, and without needing a trip to the bank or ATM.

Set Up Automatic Savings: Autosave helps you reach your savings goals with automatic transfers from your Chase checking account

to your Chase savings account – just set it, forget it and watch your savings grow! For instance, every time you get paid, pay yourself first or set up an automatic transfer of even $1 per day. Autosave allows you to adjust your goals or pause at any time. Savings goals are personal and setting money aside to build an emergency fund for unexpected life events is a great habit to start.

Tackle Your Debt: Assess your current debt—like student loans or credit cards—then tackle the most critical ones first with a high interest rate. A local Chase banker can help you create a plan so it doesn’t feel like an overwhelming task. Having a plan often comes with assurance and peace of mind.

Plan for the future: If you have access to a retirement account through your work, sign up for it – your employer will automatically deduct the money from your paycheck and many companies even offer a match. It is never too early to start saving for your future. The more proactive you are in planning for these life events, the less of a burden they become when the time comes.

For more information, visit your local Chase branch and speak to a banker or visit chase.com/communityteam to schedule a visit.

NATIONAL

DNC ANNOUNCE SITE OF CONVENTION

The Democratic National Committee recently announced Chicago will host the 2024 Democratic National Convention at the United Center from August 19 to 22. The DNC is returning to the Midwest, a critical Democratic stronghold: Illinois along with Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota – part of the “blue wall” – were crucial to the 2020 victory of President Biden and Vice President Harris and to Democrats’ success in the 2022 midterm elections. Chicago’s convention bid was supported by a wide range of midwestern Democrats who represent the diversity of the party, demonstrating the formidable coalition that will help re-elect President Biden and Vice President Harris, and elect Democrats up-and-down the ticket. The region will showcase President Biden’s economic agenda that is rebuilding our roads and bridges, unleashing a manufacturing boom, and creating good-paying middle-class jobs. Chicago has already felt the impact of Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, including $144 million to rehabilitate the four Illinois International Port Calumet River Bridges, with billions in investments to expand economic opportunity around the region.

“Chicago is a great choice to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention,” said President Joe Biden  “Democrats will gather to showcase our historic progress including building an economy from the middle out and bottom up, not from the top down. From repairing our roads and

bridges, to unleashing a manufacturing boom, and creating over 12.5 million new good-paying jobs, we’ve already delivered so much for hard working Americans – now it’s time to finish the job.”

“I am thrilled that Democrats will take the stage in Chicago to share our party’s vision and values,” said DNC Chair Jaime Harrison  “The Midwest reflects America and will give Democrats an opportunity to showcase

party’s vision for lifting up working families and those who too often have been left out and left behind,” said Illinois Governor JB Pritzker “Our great global city and its diverse communities, unparalleled hospitality, and world renowned venues shows off the best of America and its people represent the heart of our country.”

“The Midwest is key to a victory in 2024, and there is no city better positioned to reach those voters

the City government leaders who demonstrated with a proven track record of excellence that by choosing Chicago, the DNC, convention delegates, volunteers and others would be treated to a first class experience in our world class city. The DNC will create once-in-a-generation opportunities for job creation and business growth here in our city, and I’m proud that we got it done for the people of Chicago.”

“Chicago is a world-class city that looks like America and demonstrates the values of the Democratic Party,” said Mayor-Elect Brandon Johnson of Chicago. “We are unmatched when it comes to hosting events of this scale. I look forward to working closely with the DNC to facilitate a spectacular convention that showcases Chicago’s diverse culture, our beautiful lakefront, our renowned hospitality sector, and our best asset: our amazing people.”

some of President Biden and Vice President Harris’s most significant accomplishments for American families. I’m grateful to the leadership of Chicago’s bid for being great partners, as well as to the other cities for putting forward such strong bids.”

“The 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago will welcome people from across the nation to an unforgettable event highlighting our

than Chicago,” said Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL). “I look forward to welcoming the world to Illinois in 2024 and showing what it looks like when we all come together to create a future built on policies that deliver for American families.”

“I am deeply honored that President Biden and the DNC have chosen Chicago,” said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot “I want to commend all

Chicago was selected at the conclusion of a rigorous site selection process, which was led by DNC Director of Convention Planning Alex Hornbrook and included a Technical Advisory Group of veterans who have worked several cycles of conventions and are experts in the areas of housing, transportation, infrastructure, security, accessibility, and arena and production logistics. These experts traveled to Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, and New York. Late last year, the DNC entered into contract negotiations with a final set of cities before selecting Chicago as the host to the 2024 Democratic National Convention

COMMENTARY CIVIL RIGHTS GROUP CALLS FOR PROGRESS REPORT ON EQUITY

One year after the Biden Administration released plans for agencies to advance equity, The Leadership Conference Education Fund is releasing “Data for Equity: A Review of Federal Agency Equity Action Plans.” “Data for Equity” — which makes eight specific recommendations about how federal agencies can improve the collection, analysis, and sharing of data — is the fourth in The Education Fund’s series of reports about civil rights data collection.

On President Biden’s first day in office, he released Executive Order 13985, “Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities

Through the Federal Government.” That executive order acknowledged that systemic racism and other entrenched disparities in the laws, policies, and institutions of the United States have denied equal opportunity to many. In response to that first-day order, in April 2022, more than 90 federal agencies released Agency Equity Action Plans that identify each agency’s priority actions to advance equity. This report is grounded in a detailed review of 45 of these plans and makes eight recommendations for federal agencies:

 Improve data collection on key topics across agencies

 Assist agencies in expanding the collection of data necessary to assess equity

 Collect more disaggregated data, including on MENA, AANHPI, and SOGI

 Consider language and disability access in all data collections and study ways to improve response rates

 Give agencies resources to conduct equity assessments

 Cost-benefit analysis must be reformed to account for concerns about equity and justice

 Ensure big data and algorithms do not entrench inequity

 Agencies should increase data accessibility by building more user-friendly tools

“These action plans are vital to advance equity and civil rights, yet the government isn’t collecting or disaggregating the data needed to track or assess impact,” said Meeta Anand, Senior Director of the census and data equity program at The Leadership Conference Education Fund “What isn’t measured isn’t seen. We urge the Biden Administration to take a long hard look at how it can best measure its efforts to improve equity within and

across communities. We hope that Data for Equity and its recommendations will assist agencies in making progress towards a more equitable future for all.”

The Leadership Conference Education Fund builds public will for federal and state policies that promote and protect the civil and human rights of all persons in

the United States. The Education Fund’s campaigns empower and mobilize advocates around the country to push for progressive change in the United States. It was founded in 1969 as the education and research arm of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. For more information on The Education Fund, visit civilrights. org/edfund/

CLASSIC FAIRY TALE RE-IMAGINED FOR CARTOON NETWORK

Max and Cartoon Network have greenlit an animated rendition of the beloved classic tale PETER & THE WOLF  featuring music and narration by Gavin Friday, and artwork based on original illustrations by Bono

The special transforms Sergei Prokofiev’s much-loved symphony into an enchanting and contemporary visual masterpiece that touches on themes of growing up, loss, courage, transformation, and our relationship with nature. The animatedshort film is scheduled to premiere later this year and is part of an ongoing relationship with Irish Hospice Foundation

The uniquely creative project is led by musician and composer Gavin Friday and saw him narrate the reimagined classic tale with The Friday Seezer Ensemble performing Prokofiev score, newly arranged by Maurice Seezer and Gavin Friday

The artwork seen throughout the film is based on original illustrations by Gavin Friday’s longtime friend and collaborator, Bono, from his book of the same name.

Featuring a special juxtaposition of traditional hand-drawn 2D animation combined with a physical set-built world, this reimagined classic tale follows a grieving 12-year-old Peter who is now in the care of his grandfather after enduring the loss of a parent. Upon hearing stories of a wolf on the loose, Peter decides to explore the vast meadow and forest nearby to try and find the wolf himself. Along the way he encounters creatures who help him on his quest while contending with hunters aiming to win a prize for capturing the wolf.

“The messaging of vigilance, bravery, and resilience that were core to the original symphony are still echoed throughout our interpretation,

but we spin a traditional fairy tale into a unique adaptation that also incorporates the topic of loss, redemption, and recovery,” said Gavin Friday and Bono “It’s our hope that this ‘Peter & the Wolf’ becomes a balm for any child dealing with loss, alongside exposing and captivating them into the wonderful and musical world of Prokofiev.”

The project was originally developed in 2003 by Gavin Friday and Bono in support of Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF), a national charity supporting those facing dying, death and bereavement. IHF began with the aim to extend availability of hospice services across the country and has now grown to develop programs in education, research and bereavement services. The ‘Peter & the Wolf” team have worked closely with Irish Hospice Foundation on this project, with IHF advising on how best to represent the story’s sensitive themes of bereavement and loss with authenticity and thoughtfulness.

When we meet Peter, he’s an angsty adolescent, but over the course of the story, a lighthearted side emerges along with his resourcefulness and determination to uncover a thoughtful and very human side of him. Each character in this telling of “Peter & the Wolf” represents different aspects of Peter, with the Wolf embodying his relationship with grief and the unknown, his grandfather representing his connection to family and the forest creatures who capture the comedy, naivete and carefree elements of childhood.

“The emotion and artistry that Gavin has created in this modern retelling of ‘Peter & the Wolf’ brings a sense of fearlessness and style this story has never seen before,” said Michael Ouweleen, President, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Discovery Family, and Boomerang “We think

this slightly punk rock version of the timeless classic fuses beautifully for every audience, and we are honored that Bono and Gavin have entrusted us as the home to share such a personal journey.”

To reflect the unique nature of the project Blink Industries developed a mixed media approach to the production of “Peter & the Wolf” that embraced the 2D roots of Bono’s original designs while creating a tangible, immersive and atmospheric world for Peter and his cohorts. The monochromatic rendering of the film adds to the timeless quality of the piece.

Working with their extensive team of model makers, directors Stephen McNally and Elliot Dear built and filmed all the environments as miniatures in their studio in London before seamlessly compositing the 2D hand-drawn character

animation into the world. An ingenious interplay of the 2D drawings with light and shade from the physical world blends the interaction between animated characters and model made environments.

The alchemy of the magic and nostalgia of 2D animation and the tactility and warmth of the physical sets creates a film that feels utterly unlike anything else.

“Peter & the Wolf” is produced by BMG and Blink Industries and executive produced by Alistair Norbury & Stuart Souter for BMG, Benjamin Lole & James Stevenson Bretton at Blink Industries

Blink Industries’ Elliot Dear and Stephen McNally are Directors, and the Producer is Adriana Piasek-Wanski

LITERATURE

NEW BOOK EXPLAINS HOW TO REACH BLACK CONSUMERS

Reaching the Black consumer can be daunting if those trying to make a connection lack the depth, heft or the information-gathering skills required to capture their loyalty and coveted dollars. Those stymied about how to execute a campaign targeted to this valuable segment can now turn to a mustread book for perspectives, insights and proven-effective strategies. The book, Let Me Explain Black Again, by award-winning market researcher Pepper Miller, provides a blueprint on how to understand, appreciate, navigate and, execute successful campaigns that appeal to Blacks. The over-arching resolve in writing the book is to promote understanding of Black America among business leaders and society as a whole.

As president of the industryrespected market research firm -- The Hunter-Miller Group – Miller brings decades of researching Black America, observing trends, and counseling corporations like AARP, CNN, Bravo, BET, P & G, Walgreens, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and more. It is a journey chronicled in her first book What’s Black About It, which she co-authored with the late Herb Kemp and, in Black Still Matters in Marketing, which she authored solo.

With her vast knowledge and

instincts, Miller has emerged as the preeminent go-to authority on how to market to Blacks.

From her position atop the industry, her antennae are wired into issues that impact Blacks and promote a broader societal understanding of all things Black. She is not casting a punitive shadow over white America but is providing information about what makes “Black Black.”  To this end, a dismissive query by a limited-perspective marketer jarred Miller: “They speak English, don’t they?”

This quote speaks to mainstream

America’s long-standing biases and their beliefs that language is a cultural identifier.

Responding to the question, Pepper defiantly retorted: “Yes, I speak English, but are you talking to me?”

With that question as a catalyst, Let Me Explain Black Again addresses the bias behind the question and zones in on the “whys,” “hows” and “how-tos” of understanding and reaching the Black consumer in its totality.

The benefits have a domino effect as business leaders, brands and society then have an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Black identity, behaviors, and beliefs. As a result, stronger connections can be solidified. The simple statement that piqued actionable steps was:

“Pepper, I didn’t know.”  This lament has been directed to Pepper confidentially and coyly by a number of attendees after she wraps a research study, speaking engagement or after her flagship Black insights workshops and presentations.

The “Pepper I didn’t know” reveal is one of the drivers in the book. The other two are:

 Millennial power: They desire a nation of equality and are on the front lines of political and cultural change. Black Millennials drive

‘WOKE’ FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS

Afrospirituality” is an Africancentered and culturally enriched faith designed to address the problems in the Black community and to empower Black people in America and worldwide. “Most races of people have beliefs that are based on tradition, and culture is the centerpiece that unites and mobilizes the masses of their people,” stated Sean XLG Mitchell "I used this formula to create the faith."

“Afrospirituality” is deeply rooted in ancestral principles and practices with a modern-day perspective on mindfulness that speaks to the advancement of faith in a contemporary world. The author, well-known in the hip hop arena, says that he has been actively involved in working in the Black community for 30 years. In addition, he’s a former deacon and ordained minister who has studied African history from scholars such

as Dr. John Henrik Clarke, Ivan Van Sertima, and a host of others. The work reflects a compilation of his experience and dedication. “I think it’s important for us to do as much as we can to contribute towards improving our lives and conditions," says Mitchell "It’s not going to happen overnight, but it won't happen at all if we don’t do anything to make the necessary changes to better ourselves.” The practice centers on the development of culture, a significant factor in the unity of most races of people. Sean adds, “slavery interrupted our cultural continuity which created a divide among our people. We must work together to recapture and reclaim it if we’re going to advance from where we are.”

“Afrospirituality” is a daily practice designed to uplift and empower the members of the Black community. The book incorporates African

history and achievements from ancient to modern times to include traditional ethics and guidelines. The practice shows a correlation between culture and power in all areas of life from education to economic growth with a focus on self-development.

EDUCATION APP NABS FIRST PLACE IN HACKATHON

A team of students from Alabama State University (ASU) took the top prize for their innovative credit education program to reach their peers in the first-ever #IYKYK Hackathon (If You Know, You Know), sponsored by Experian and HomeFree-USA Their winning concept was a gamified app that teaches credit education and fiscal responsibility.

“We talked about teaching people from ages 10 to 99. That’s how much of an impact credit has. Through our app, we hope to tell more people about credit,” said Mandelkosi Sibanda of Alabama State University

Nicknamed the “ASU Credit Stingers,” Sibanda and his teammates Thomas Mulaisho, Takudzwa Modza and Janai Thompson earned a $40,000 scholarship for their concept, “Credit Rush.” The awardwinning idea is a game where, in order to overcome obstacles, students watch a video or take a quiz about credit in order to advance to higher levels. Other features include the “Hive,” a library of credit education materials, chat, daily calendar functions and more.

The #IYKYK Hackathon challenged students to create a credit education program for their peers, including those who are not part of the credit ecosystem. The competition was the culmination of a six month program as part of the Center for Financial Advancement® (CFA) Credit Academy sponsored by Experian and HomeFreeUSA that brought together more than 250 students from 14 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in live sessions with Experian credit education experts and self-paced content. Finalists from ASU, Fisk University, Morgan State University and Shaw University represented six countries and eight different languages. The teams presented their ideas live at Experian’s North America headquarters.

“Every team exceeded our expectations. We’re inspired by these student leaders and their commitment to driving positive change in their communities. In sharing their personal stories and experiences, they’re helping us create solutions that are culturally and generationally relevant so we can meet them where they are in their financial and credit journeys,” said Raudy Perez, Experian North America’s senior director for diversity, equity and inclusion partnerships.

“This is the most transformative experience that many of these students will have in their lives,” said Gwen Garnett, HomeFreeUSA Center for Financial Advancement® Executive Director “We thank Experian for its commitment to the CFA and its scholars by helping us provide the training and tools to allow young adults and credit invisibles to understand and successfully navigate the credit ecosystem.”

BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH WEEK #BMHW23

Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW), held on April 11-27, is a week-long campaign led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance to build awareness, activism, and communitybuilding to amplify the voices, perspectives, and lived experiences of Black Mamas and birthing people.

This year’s theme, Our Bodies Belong to Us: Restoring Black Autonomy and Joy, speaks to women’s strength, power, and resilience, and their unassailable right to live freely, safely, and joyfully.

According to the CDC, in 2020 the maternal mortality rate for Black women was 3 times higher than white women in the U.S. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, such as lower quality healthcare, structural racism, implicit bias from healthcare providers, and underlying chronic conditions.

Improving maternal health and reducing the disparities in maternal health outcomes is a top priority for the Biden-Harris Administration. In 2022, a dozen federal agencies mobilized to develop and release the White House Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis. This Blueprint outlines specific actions that the federal government is taking to improve maternal health across five priorities, ranging from increasing access to and coverage of high-quality maternal health services to expanding and diversifying the perinatal workforce.

To support the week-long observance, join the BMHW Twitter Chat on April 11 at 12:00 p.m. ET using the hashtag #BMHW23, and download the 2023 Social Media Toolkit for key messaging, events, shareable social media messages, graphics, and other materials.
