MAYOR DAVID DINKINS, REP. CHARLES RANGEL, HONORED WITH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

LAWMAKERS REINSTATED TO LOUISIANA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

On Thursday, April 6, Tennessee State Representatives Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were expelled from the Tennessee House of Representatives for their participation in a demonstration in support of gun reform. Following widespread public outcry calling for the reappointment of the two young Black politicians, Rep. Jones was temporarily reinstated to his position on April 10th and Rep. Pearson was temporarily reinstated on April 12th. NAACP President & CEO, Derrick Johnson released this statement in response:

The Black Stars News 2015 Annual Awards Dinner will honor Mayor David Dinkins, Rep. Charles Rangel, Rep. Yvette Clarke, R. Donahue Peebles, Barbara Arnwine, Inez Barron, Sabrina Lamb, Dr. Rudy Crew, Stephen Byrd, Alia Jones, and the Central Park Five survivors of gross injustice on December 18 from 6:00pm –10:00pm at MIST Harlem, 46 West 116th Street

Following members of the Louisiana legislators decision to expel Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, the NAACP released this statement: "While what happened in the Tennessee legislature yesterday is horrific, it is not surprising. Extremist legislators, funded by corporate interests, have a history of undermining our

protest. The dismissal of the two black male representatives was punctuated by the non-punishment of a white female legislator. The dismissal was called “inexcusable that, while they upheld their oath to serve Tennesseans who are grieving the loss of last week's mass murder, their colleagues decided to use racial

“Each honoree chosen for recognition has demonstrated exceptional leadership and vision in her or his respective profession or endeavor and in some significant measure has contributed towards creating a more just society in this country,” says Black Star News founder and publisher Milton Allimadi. “Obviously much work needs to be done here and around the world.”

"This is America - where you receive more legislative 'action' for calling out the need for gun control than for actually addressing the loss of life as a result of gun violence. It is disappointing, but not surprising, to know that some lawmakers in Tennessee would rather spend precious time removing these brave young Black men from their duly elected positions than take a stance against inadequate gun policies. Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson have demonstrated incredible leadership and commitment to protecting their constituents and our democracy through their unwavering support of gun reform in the absence of action from their state-level peers and legislative colleagues at the federal level."

The gala starts at 6:00pm with a cocktail hour to be followed by the dinner and awards ceremonies. There will be musical entertainment by opera singer Cassandra Douglas and from harmonica phenomenon William Galison. David Dinkins is honored for Lifetime Achievement

— he was New York City’s first African American mayor and also welcomed Nelson Mandela to the city after his release in 1990.

Rep. Charles Rangel, also honored for Lifetime Achievement, has served in Congress since 1971. He is a recipient of The Bronze medal for helping save soldiers behind enemy line during the Korean War

5 THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU GET YOUR FIRST PAYCHECK

Getting your first paycheck is an exciting experience and an opportunity to kickstart your financial journey. Mapping out your short and long-term financial goals early on will allow you to build a strong foundation for your future.

Here are five things to help you make the most of that first paycheck:

Open a Bank Account: Checking accounts allow you to deposit money, make transfers, withdraw cash, pay bills and take care of other banking transactions either in person, online or through your bank's mobile app. Most accounts come with a debit card that can be used anywhere cards are accepted. What’s important is that you’re fitted with the account that best suits your needs. Learn more about the documents you need to open an account.

Set up Direct Deposit: For quick access to the money you earn, set up direct deposit. It will make your funds available in your account on pay day, making it easier to pay your bills, send money and meet financial obligations on time, and without needing a trip to the bank or ATM.

Set Up Automatic Savings: Autosave helps you reach your savings goals with automatic transfers from your Chase checking account

to your Chase savings account – just set it, forget it and watch your savings grow! For instance, every time you get paid, pay yourself first or set up an automatic transfer of even $1 per day. Autosave allows you to adjust your goals or pause at any time. Savings goals are personal and setting money aside to build an emergency fund for unexpected life events is a great habit to start.

Tackle Your Debt: Assess your current debt—like student loans or credit cards—then tackle the most critical ones first with a high interest rate. A local Chase banker can help you create a plan so it doesn’t feel like an overwhelming task. Having a plan often comes with assurance and peace of mind.

Plan for the future: If you have access to a retirement account through your work, sign up for it – your employer will automatically deduct the money from your paycheck and many companies even offer a match. It is never too early to start saving for your future. The more proactive you are in planning for these life events, the less of a burden they become when the time comes.

For more information, visit your local Chase branch and speak to a banker or visit chase.com/communityteam to schedule a visit.

DNC ANNOUNCE SITE OF CONVENTION

The Democratic National Committee recently announced Chicago will host the 2024 Democratic National Convention at the United Center from August 19 to 22. The DNC is returning to the Midwest, a critical Democratic stronghold: Illinois along with Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota – part of the “blue wall” – were crucial to the 2020 victory of President Biden and Vice President Harris and to Democrats’ success in the 2022 midterm elections. Chicago’s convention bid was supported by a wide range of midwestern Democrats who represent the diversity of the party, demonstrating the formidable coalition that will help re-elect President Biden and Vice President Harris, and elect Democrats up-and-down the ticket. The region will showcase President Biden’s economic agenda that is rebuilding our roads and bridges, unleashing a manufacturing boom, and creating good-paying middle-class jobs. Chicago has already felt the impact of Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, including $144 million to rehabilitate the four Illinois International Port Calumet River Bridges, with billions in investments to expand economic opportunity around the region.

“Chicago is a great choice to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention,” said President Joe Biden  “Democrats will gather to showcase our historic progress including building an economy from the middle out and bottom up, not from the top down. From repairing our roads and

bridges, to unleashing a manufacturing boom, and creating over 12.5 million new good-paying jobs, we’ve already delivered so much for hard working Americans – now it’s time to finish the job.”

“I am thrilled that Democrats will take the stage in Chicago to share our party’s vision and values,” said DNC Chair Jaime Harrison  “The Midwest reflects America and will give Democrats an opportunity to showcase some of President Biden and Vice President Harris’s most significant accomplishments for American families. I’m grateful to the leadership of Chicago’s bid for being great partners, as well as to the other cities for putting forward such strong bids.”

“The 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago will welcome people from across the nation to an unforgettable event highlighting our party’s vision for lifting up working families and those who too often have been left out and left behind,” said Illinois Governor JB Pritzker “Our great global city and its diverse communities, unparalleled hospitality, and world renowned venues shows off the best of America and its people represent the heart of our country.”

“The Midwest is key to a victory in 2024, and there is no city better positioned to reach those voters than Chicago,” said Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL). “I look forward to welcoming the world to Illinois in 2024 and showing what it looks like when we

all come together to create a future built on policies that deliver for American families.”

“I am deeply honored that President Biden and the DNC have chosen Chicago,” said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot “I want to commend all the City government leaders who demonstrated with a proven track record of excellence that by choosing Chicago, the DNC, convention delegates, volunteers and others would be treated to a first class experience in our world class city. The DNC will create once-in-a-generation opportunities for job creation and business growth here in our city, and I’m proud that we got it done for the people of Chicago.”

“Chicago is a world-class city that looks like America and demonstrates the values of the Democratic Party,” said Mayor-Elect Brandon Johnson of Chicago. “We are unmatched when it

comes to hosting events of this scale. I look forward to working closely with the DNC to facilitate a spectacular convention that showcases Chicago’s diverse culture, our beautiful lakefront, our renowned hospitality sector, and our best asset: our amazing people.” Chicago was selected at the conclusion of a rigorous site selection process, which was led by DNC Director of Convention Planning Alex Hornbrook and included a Technical Advisory Group of veterans who have worked several cycles of conventions and are experts in the areas of housing, transportation, infrastructure, security, accessibility, and arena and production logistics. These experts traveled to Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, and New York. Late last year, the DNC entered into contract negotiations with a final set of cities before selecting Chicago as the host to the 2024 Democratic National Convention

BLACK MUSIC COALITION HOSTS PROGRAM FOR FUTURE LEADERS

The Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) and the Academy of Country Music (ACM) announced the opening of applications for “OnRamp,” a partnership between the two organizations for a guaranteed income program for 20 young, Black members of the music community, including artists and industry professionals, in Nashville, Tennessee. The OnRamp program, focused on improving inclusivity and equity within Music City, aims to empower the next generation of leaders in the early stages of their careers by granting access to personal and professional development opportunities, community mentorship, industry exposure, access to exclusive Academy membership panels and tentpole live events, and visibility with Academy Board members and industry leaders. Additionally, through the program, each participant will receive a $1,000 monthly stipend for one year.

To qualify, applicants must identify as African-American, be a resident of the Greater Metro Nashville area (defined as the following counties: Davidson, Dickson, Maury, Montgomery, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson), and demonstrate financial need as determined by the Self Sufficiency Calculator. Applicants are asked to provide three to five professional and personal references (with at least one professional reference strongly encouraged), answer questions about their career goals in the music industry, share what they hope to gain from the program, and answer other programmatic questions. OnRamp applications close Friday, April 28 and candidates accepted into the program will be notified in June, at which time the program will begin in tandem with the celebration of Black Music Month and to commemorate the Black

MUSIC MUSIC LEGEND FOCUS OF MAJOR EXHIBIT

Roots 101 African American Museum will open a long-awaited tribute to the late Stephen "Static Major" Garrett, the "King of Kentucky." The exhibit will take visitors through the legendary music career of the musical genius, who was born in Louisville on November 11, 1974, and died on February 23, 2008.

Static Major was a singer, songwriter, and record producer, who was a member of the R&B trio 'Playa' that went on to have hits like "Cheers 2 U" and "Don't Stop the Music." This year marks the 25th anniversary of the group's formation. Static Major was also a songwriter for some of the biggest artists in R&B and Hip-Hop, from Aaliyah, Ginuwine, and Nicole Wray to Pretty Ricky and Lil Wayne After his death in 2018, hip-hop superstar Drake featured Garrett in his hit song "After Dark." Then in 2020, Louisville native Jack Harlow released "Luv Is Dro," which was a reworked version of Garrett's song. Prior to the public exhibit opening, which will run from May 8th thru July 8th at Roots 101, there will be

a private event on Sunday, May 7th, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The Music Is Like Breathing Brunch will give family, friends, and special guests an opportunity to get the first look at the exhibit and share special stories of the talented Kentucky native who was ahead of his time.

Avonti Garrett, the widow and mother of his two children, remembers not only the artist but also the family man.

"Stephen Ellis Garrett aka Static Major was a special one-of-a-kind person. He not only was a talented singer, songwriter, and producer, he was a good husband, father, son, and friend. The love that he generously displayed made all of us feel special to him. His timeless music still has a great influence over the music industry. Static Major is and will forever be a true legend. The Goat!!! By age 33. His family, friends, and I appreciate the love, and we are truly grateful for the honoring of his legacy. He is greatly missed by all."

Lamont Collins, Founder of Roots 101, shares his excitement about

having the exhibit at his museum. "It's so important to document and preserve our history. Stephen "Static Major" Garrett played and still plays a vital role in the entertainment industry. This was a long time in the making; it should have happened a long time ago. We are happy that Roots 101 in Garrett's hometown was able to make it happen. We invite you to come see the temporary exhibit. We hope it will have a permanent home someday, but it is an honor to be the first to display his life and superstar career. Legacies matter, and Roots 101 continues to chronicle the history of African Americans in our community and the outstanding contributions made not only to Kentucky but the world."

The exhibit's opening during Kentucky Derby weekend is fitting, as Static Major's legacy has left an indelible mark on the music industry. The exhibit will be open to the public from May 8th thru July 8th, with the possibility of a longer run.

Roots 101 African American Museum's mission is to promote

understanding and inspire appreciation of the achievement, contribution, and experiences of African Americans using exhibits, programs, and activities to illustrate African American history, culture, and art. The nationally recognized museum was voted by USA Today as a top attraction and has achieved numerous accolades since opening in 2019.

HIGH SCHOOL ENTREPRENEUR PROGRAM OPENS REGISTRATION

Hitsville Next will house The Pop Shop, an Entrepreneur in Residence Program, providing high school students aged 13 to 18 with unique opportunities to experiment with business concepts; explore career paths adjacent and connected to the music industry; receive mentoring from accomplished executives, entrepreneurs, artists, and network with peers.

The Pop Shop will perpetuate the greatest entrepreneurship success story and business model of our lifetime – Motown Records. A process started by Berry Gordy’s parents to encourage entrepreneurship among their eight children; siblings would pair up, pitch a venture and the winning team would be given a six-month residency at the family businesses. This allowed all the Gordy children an opportunity to conceptualize, launch, and operate their own businesses. Portions of revenues earned from the companies were reinvested to start a family fund, Ber-Berry Co-operative. The

brainchild of the eldest sister and Museum founder Esther Gordy, Ber-Berry provided seed money to establish Tamla Records, Berry Gordy’s first record company. In its first year, the Pop Shop will bring together a cohort of four young entrepreneurs aged 13 to 18 for a five-month entrepreneurial incubator program. Through two months of in-person and virtual workshops, one-on-one mentoring and networking with entrepreneurial and social media experts, web-based and social media coaching, and two months of varied opportunities to test their ideas live on our campusentrepreneurs will be equipped with resources, mentorship, and peer support to establish a lifelong commitment to their entrepreneurial development.

The Pop Shop is presented by AT&T and proudly supported by JPMorgan Chase, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Michigan Arts and Culture Council

The fundraising dinner, hosted by Franco

EDUCATION APP NABS FIRST PLACE IN HACKATHON

A team of students from Alabama State University (ASU) took the top prize for their innovative credit education program to reach their peers in the first-ever #IYKYK Hackathon (If You Know, You Know), sponsored by Experian and HomeFree-USA Their winning concept was a gamified app that teaches credit education and fiscal responsibility.

“We talked about teaching people from ages 10 to 99. That’s how much of an impact credit has. Through our app, we hope to tell more people about credit,” said Mandelkosi Sibanda of Alabama State University

Nicknamed the “ASU Credit Stingers,” Sibanda and his teammates Thomas Mulaisho, Takudzwa Modza and Janai Thompson earned a $40,000 scholarship for their concept, “Credit Rush.” The awardwinning idea is a game where, in order to overcome obstacles, students watch a video or take a quiz about credit in order to advance to higher levels. Other features include the “Hive,” a library of credit education materials, chat, daily calendar functions and more.

The #IYKYK Hackathon challenged students to create a credit education program for their peers, including those who are not part of the credit ecosystem. The competition was the culmination of a six month program as part of the Center for Financial Advancement® (CFA) Credit Academy sponsored by Experian and HomeFreeUSA that brought together more than 250 students from 14 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in live sessions with Experian credit education experts and self-paced content. Finalists from ASU, Fisk University, Morgan State University and Shaw University represented six countries and eight different languages. The teams presented their ideas live at Experian’s North America headquarters.

“Every team exceeded our expectations. We’re inspired by these student leaders and their commitment to driving positive change in their communities. In sharing their personal stories and experiences, they’re helping us create solutions that are culturally and generationally relevant so we can meet them where they are in their financial and credit journeys,” said Raudy Perez, Experian North America’s senior director for diversity, equity and inclusion partnerships.

“This is the most transformative experience that many of these students will have in their lives,” said Gwen Garnett, HomeFreeUSA Center for Financial Advancement® Executive Director “We thank Experian for its commitment to the CFA and its scholars by helping us provide the training and tools to allow young adults and credit invisibles to understand and successfully navigate the credit ecosystem.”

BOOKS RESEARCHER PENS COMPELLING BOOK FOR BLACK CONSUMERS

Reaching the Black consumer can be daunting if those trying to make a connection lack the depth, heft or the information-gathering skills required to capture their loyalty and coveted dollars. Those stymied about how to execute a campaign targeted to this valuable segment can now turn to a mustread book for perspectives, insights and proven-effective strategies. The book, Let Me Explain Black Again, by award-winning market researcher Pepper Miller, provides a blueprint on how to understand, appreciate, navigate and, execute successful campaigns that appeal to Blacks. The over-arching resolve in writing the book is to promote understanding of Black America among business leaders and society as a whole.

As president of the industryrespected market research firm -- The Hunter-Miller Group – Miller brings decades of researching Black America, observing trends, and counseling corporations like AARP, CNN, Bravo, BET, P & G, Walgreens, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and more. It is a journey chronicled in her first book What’s Black About It, which she co-authored with the late Herb Kemp and, in Black Still Matters in Marketing, which she authored solo.

With her vast knowledge and

instincts, Miller has emerged as the preeminent go-to authority on how to market to Blacks.

From her position atop the industry, her antennae are wired into issues that impact Blacks and promote a broader societal understanding of all things Black. She is not casting a punitive shadow over white America but is providing information about what makes “Black Black.”  To this end, a dismissive query by a limited-perspective marketer jarred Miller: “They speak English, don’t they?”

This quote speaks to mainstream

America’s long-standing biases and their beliefs that language is a cultural identifier.

Responding to the question, Pepper defiantly retorted: “Yes, I speak English, but are you talking to me?”

With that question as a catalyst, Let Me Explain Black Again addresses the bias behind the question and zones in on the “whys,” “hows” and “how-tos” of understanding and reaching the Black consumer in its totality.

The benefits have a domino effect as business leaders, brands and society then have an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Black identity, behaviors, and beliefs. As a result, stronger connections can be solidified. The simple statement that piqued actionable steps was:

“Pepper, I didn’t know.”  This lament has been directed to Pepper confidentially and coyly by a number of attendees after she wraps a research study, speaking engagement or after her flagship Black insights workshops and presentations.

The “Pepper I didn’t know” reveal is one of the drivers in the book. The other two are:

 Millennial power: They desire a nation of equality and are on the front lines of political and cultural change. Black Millennials drive

‘WOKE’ FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS

Afrospirituality” is an Africancentered and culturally enriched faith designed to address the problems in the Black community and to empower Black people in America and worldwide. “Most races of people have beliefs that are based on tradition, and culture is the centerpiece that unites and mobilizes the masses of their people,” stated Sean XLG Mitchell "I used this formula to create the faith."

“Afrospirituality” is deeply rooted in ancestral principles and practices with a modern-day perspective on mindfulness that speaks to the advancement of faith in a contemporary world. The author, well-known in the hip hop arena, says that he has been actively involved in working in the Black community for 30 years. In addition, he’s a former deacon and ordained minister who has studied African history from scholars such

as Dr. John Henrik Clarke, Ivan Van Sertima, and a host of others. The work reflects a compilation of his experience and dedication. “I think it’s important for us to do as much as we can to contribute towards improving our lives and conditions," says Mitchell "It’s not going to happen overnight, but it won't happen at all if we don’t do anything to make the necessary changes to better ourselves.” The practice centers on the development of culture, a significant factor in the unity of most races of people. Sean adds, “slavery interrupted our cultural continuity which created a divide among our people. We must work together to recapture and reclaim it if we’re going to advance from where we are.”

“Afrospirituality” is a daily practice designed to uplift and empower the members of the Black community. The book incorporates African

history and achievements from ancient to modern times to include traditional ethics and guidelines. The practice shows a correlation between culture and power in all areas of life from education to economic growth with a focus on self-development.

BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH WEEK #BMHW23

Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW), held on April 11-27, is a week-long campaign led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance to build awareness, activism, and communitybuilding to amplify the voices, perspectives, and lived experiences of Black Mamas and birthing people.

This year’s theme, Our Bodies Belong to Us: Restoring Black Autonomy and Joy, speaks to women’s strength, power, and resilience, and their unassailable right to live freely, safely, and joyfully.

According to the CDC, in 2020 the maternal mortality rate for Black women was 3 times higher than white women in the U.S. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, such as lower quality healthcare, structural racism, implicit bias from healthcare providers, and underlying chronic conditions.

Improving maternal health and reducing the disparities in maternal health outcomes is a top priority for the Biden-Harris Administration. In 2022, a dozen federal agencies mobilized to develop and release the White House Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis. This Blueprint outlines specific actions that the federal government is taking to improve maternal health across five priorities, ranging from increasing access to and coverage of high-quality maternal health services to expanding and diversifying the perinatal workforce.

To support the week-long observance, join the BMHW Twitter Chat on April 11 at 12:00 p.m. ET using the hashtag #BMHW23, and download the 2023 Social Media Toolkit for key messaging, events, shareable social media messages, graphics, and other materials.
