NEWS MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER PARTNERS Major League Soccer today announced that it would leverage a historic $25 million loan from a syndicate of Black banks, marking the first time any sports league has participated in a major commercial transaction exclusively with Black banks. Facilitated by the nonprofit National Black Bank Foundation (NBBF), the partnership is the latest significant step in a series of ongoing efforts by MLS in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion space. “Major League Soccer’s partnership with the National Black Bank Foundation is a tangible step in the efforts to close the racial economic gap in the United States, and it’s the right business decision for us,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. “As a league, we continue to increase our initiatives in support of racial justice. In order to make a genuine impact, economic justice must be part of the equation. This transaction with a syndicate of community-focused Black banks is an important measure, and it is our hope this will raise awareness of the importance of Black-owned banks and their impact on the economy.” The transaction announced today, coupled with the league's strong credit rating, will grow the banks' capital

cushion through fees and interest earned, creating additional capacity for new lines of credit for home and small business loans in communities of color across the country. In facilitating the loan, the NBBF organized a syndication team led by Atlanta-based Citizens Trust Bank

and New York-based Carver Federal Savings Bank. "Major League Soccer has raised the bar for corporate America with this transformative partnership," NBBF cofounder and general counsel, Ashley Bell, said. "If other leagues and major

corporations follow the MLS model, lives of Black families all across this country will change for the better because their local Black bank will have the capital resources to approve historic numbers of home and small business loans."

Don’t let lawmakers leave New Yorkers out in the cold. The COVID-19 pandemic hit New York hard. Thousands lost jobs. Many of us fell behind on paying utility bills. And now a shutoff moratorium that prevented providers from turning off our heat and electricity has expired. Without action from lawmakers, shutoffs could begin any day, leaving more than a million homes without heat, hot water, or electricity.

Is it Alzheimer’s? Or just signs of aging? Get screened and find out.

If you have trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating or making decisions that affect everyday life, the sooner you can find out what’s going on, the better.

Early screening of what’s known as your cognitive health, allows for earlier detection and diagnosis of potential Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. Early diagnosis means more time to plan for the future, express your preferences for care, adapt your home environment and seek support. Early diagnosis also provides opportunities to try new treatments that may help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms. We offer people who are experiencing possible early cognitive decline, the opportunity to participate in ongoing research studies/clinical trials that are focused on the early stage of this disease. Our Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease is one of 10 centers in New York State, funded in part by a grant from the New York State Department of Health.

Nicole Austin-Hillery, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF), today released the following statement on President Joe Biden’s nomination for U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson. “We are delighted with President Biden’s choice for the next Supreme Court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. This nomination is timely as we end Black History Month, celebrating the contributions of Black Americans and march into celebrating outstanding women for Women’s History Month. Milestones like these have been hard-won by years of back-breaking, often unrecognized work of ordinary women and activists and should be celebrated.

This moment is a step along the path towards equality, and even though we have a long way to go, inspiring women like Judge Jackson and this ground-breaking nomination gives us hope…. Ketanji Brown Jackson, an incredibly qualified judge with an extensive background in criminal justice reform, has an impressive resume filled with superb legal credentials, which are the standard for new justices. In addition, her service as a leading expert on federal sentencing policy and noteworthy experience representing low-income criminal defendants makes her a pioneering choice to join the United States Supreme Court…. When confirmed, Judge Jackson will become the first African American woman to sit on the Supreme Court in our nation’s history….

The leaders also announced the formation of The Black Women’s Leadership Collective (BWLC), a leadership and organizing hub for Black women’s organizations, advocates, and supporters. Representing millions of

women across America, the BWLC will utilize the power of their collective efforts to support Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s historic nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. Lifted by the prayers and dreams of the ancestors, BWLC will work throughout the process to engage and mobilize our community, lift up Judge Jackson’s powerful story, and ensure her confirmation to the Supreme Court.  STATEMENTS FROM BL ACK WOMEN LEADERS (15 TOTAL) SHAVON ARLINE-BRADLEY, President, Delta for Women in Action: "Delta for Women in Action is thrilled by President Biden’s nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. We are proud of this exceptional nominee – who embodies the principles of our communities and brings lived experience. Black women remain one of the most engaged voting demographics, but we

remain underrepresented throughout the federal judiciary. The historic nomination of Judge Jackson will undoubtedly make an indelible mark on the Supreme Court for generations to come."

DONNA BRAZILE, Strategist and Political Commentator: “President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have wisely nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to become the first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. There were lots of exceptionally qualified capable women to choose from, but Biden’s selection of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson demonstrates that there’s no need for America’s highest court to be off limits to Black women anymore.” ROSLYN BROCK, Chairman, International Connection and Social Action Committee: "We stand united in the continued fight for Black women to be represented in all arenas important to the progress of our nation, and we are ready to walk arm-in-arm with this administration every step of the way as some of the very best and brightest Black women judges and attorneys are identified, vetted, interviewed, and presented to the United States Senate Judiciary Committee." ELSIE COOKE-HOLMES, National President & Chair of the Board, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. "The members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated applaud President Biden’s nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. Her impeccable experiences and qualifications make her an excellent choice for this most prestigious seat. It is our hope that this pivotal moment in history will bring the nation closer to achieving greater judicial diversity and we urge the U.S. Senate to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson without delay." MELANIE L. CAMPBELL, President and CEO of NCBCP, Convener of Black Women's Roundtable: "Today, as we close out Black History Month, we thank President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, for keeping their campaign commitment by nominating Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as the first Black woman U.S. Supreme Court Justice. The NCBCP Black Women’s Roundtable is working in coalition with our allies to ensure that this nominee is treated fairly and is confirmed without delay.” BISHOP LEAH DAUGHTRY, Co-Convenor, Power Rising: “With the nomination of Judge

Ketanji Brown Jackson, another barrier has fallen. After 233 years, the highest Court in the land will take a giant leap toward full representation of all of America’s people at the table of justice. We applaud President Biden and Vice President Harris on their selection of this exceptionally qualified, deeply experienced jurist. Her voice will help to ensure that our justice system reflects the diversity of all of us.”

GLYNDA CARR, President and CEO Higher Heights: "Black women have shown how powerful our activism can be, yet we are grossly underrepresented in leadership on every level. Since being in office, President Biden has demonstrated that he recognizes the value of diversity in his administration and has been living out that truth in the selections that he makes. Our country's leadership should reflect the people it serves, beginning with our nation's highest court, and Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will be that long-overdue representation." BRANDI COLANDER, APRIL REIGN, KIM TIGNOR & SABRIYA I. WILLIAMS, She Will Rise: “We are thrilled to see the President honor his commitment of creating a more representative Supreme Court. We believe Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is qualified and ready to serve. We stand at the ready to support a respectful confirmation process as we watch her rise.” JOTAKA EADDY, Convenor #WinWithBlackWomen: “Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is an exceptionally qualified jurist who will bring to the Supreme Court her expertise and commitment to the Constitution and values of our democracy. Most importantly, Judge Jackson will bring to the Supreme Court what it has lacked for 233 years - the lived experience of a Black woman. With this nomination President Biden and Vice President Harris will once again elevate a woman, and in this case, a Black woman, to a position that has long been covered by a cement ceiling - today that ceiling is shattered into a million pieces." KAREN FINNEY, Strategist, Commentator, Advocate: “Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson taking her place on the Supreme Court that first Monday in October 2022 will be one of the most inspirational moments in our nation’s history. Known for her brilliance, integrity, commitment to justice and our constitution, Judge Jackson will expand the diversity of expertise and lived experience on the court to the betterment of representative

HOLLI HOLIDAY, President, Sisters Lead, Sisters Vote: “Two years ago, on February 25, 2020, presidential candidate Joe Biden made a campaign promise. He said, ‘I’m looking forward to making sure there’s a Black woman on the Supreme Court, to make sure we in fact get every representation.’ Today, President Biden kept his promise.” STAR JONES, Attorney, Advocate, Media Personality & Chair, U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad: “I’m absolutely thrilled at the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as our next Supreme Court Justice. It makes me extremely proud that President Biden and Vice President Harris are seizing this moment in history to lead with a vision of America at its best and ensuring that the leadership of our democracy reflects a diversity of lived experiences at the highest levels. As the first Black women to be nominated, the combination of outstanding credentials, character and lived experience of Judge Jackson ensures that our President has selected a nominee who is more than worthy of a lifetime appointment to our highest court.” RACHEL NOERDLINGER, Principal Noerdlinger Strategies: “I applaud the President and Vice President for delivering on their commitment to diversifying the nation’s highest legal body with his historic selection of the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court. While it does not change the ideological balance of the Court, it increases the likelihood that our needs and values as Black women will be represented.”

END NO TE S

BLACK WOMEN March is Women’s History Month – a time to honor and celebrate the contributions of women across time, places, cultures and professions — including healthcare. “There’s no better way to celebrate than to showcase a few of Baptist Health doctors who each and every day are breaking through that glass ceiling in their own ways,” said Olga Villaverde, South Florida PBS’ Health Channel host, who yesterday hosted the Healthcare is Female Resource LIVE from Baptist Health’s newsroom. The panelists: Dalibel Bravo, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute; Jobyna Whiting, M.D., the director of degenerative spine surgery at Miami Neuroscience Institute;, and Heather Johnson, M.D., a preventive cardiologist with the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. Fewer than 40 percent of physicians in the U.S. are female, added Ms. Villaverde. “And the more specialized a field is, the fewer female doctors you’ll find, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. However, there is a steady increase in the number of female medical students, which we are thrilled to say and celebrate…right here at Baptist Health.” Here are excerpts from the Resource LIVE: MS. VILLAVERDE: "This kind of inspiration really opens the doors for so many women out there who wonder: Is it a man’s world in this field? Do I stand a chance? And the answer is yes, yes.” DR. BRAVO: “Yes, definitely. When I chose orthopedic surgery, many people would either raise their eyebrows or say something … say things like: You know, aren’t you a little small? I’m sitting down now, but I’m petite. I’m five, three. And like: Aren’t you

MAKING HISTORY Not many 16-year olds can say that they have a successful business under their belts, let alone two. Yet, that’s exactly what Paris Mckenzie is doing. This young lady is currently juggling a beauty supply store and a salon while tackling her education. What’s even better is that this is far from the end of her journey. It might not seem strange for Paris to open a beauty supply store when you know her history. According to her interviews, her mother opened a salon a few months after giving birth to her. As a result, Paris grew up helping around the store. From as early as the age of 10, she’d mastered cleaning the barber tools, wiping down the salon chairs, and shampooing the clients’ hair. Within a couple of years, her mother was asking her to color and install wigs. This start at the salon led to her working with clients when she wasn’t in school. Paris notes that she saved all the money she earned because she had no responsibilities to take care of. Since this money would be integral to the next step in her life, it’s a good thing that she did.  THE I NS PI RAT I ON B E H IN D H E R BUSIN E S S Even as a child, Paris noted certain issues for the Black women in her community. When they were searching for the hair products they needed, they often had to travel far from home to find them. Additionally, shopping wasn’t usually a pleasant experience because African

surgeons out there. And then one of my mentors would always say: If you need a brute, or if you need brute force, we can find a brute. It’s easy to find a brute to do something that you can’t. “But I was able to go through, orthopedic surgery residency without any problem. And many females have followed me. And, really, again, it’s what we’ve echoed before — mentorship. I had so many of my mentors. They’d say: You can do it. You can do this. And they were all mostly men. I know that we do want mentors that look like us, but there are also mentors that are men that have supported me throughout my career…

about, has that affected your outlook or your mindset when it comes to treating patients, and if so, how?" DR. JOHNSON: “I am definitely motivated, not as far as just also quality of life and treating patients understanding as far as heart disease, but the importance of community education and events such as this. This is critical as far as reaching out into the community and letting people know especially young women — you can definitely achieve your dreams. And there is not a thought that is too much or too hard that it is not possible. Each of us are also highlighting the importance of mentorship,

the importance of support, the importance of having organizations and people surrounding you to help get you to that next step — to be able to stand with you and support you and say: Yes, you can go ahead and be the first woman or begin to allow more women into a field. “And even in cardiology — so few women in interventional cardiology. And we are definitely spreading the word. And so that’s why I love what I do because it allows me to connect, not just with the patient in front of me, but also the community as a whole. So, thank you again for this opportunity.” MS. VILLAVERDE: "Dr. Whiting … women breaking the glass ceiling. You are a neurosurgeon. You know there is a relatively large gap between male and female there as well, right?" DR. WHITING: “For sure. Yes. I love hearing what Dr. Bravo had to say and how she’s involved in things where they’re working to actually bring more women into the field. I was recently at a dinner where my previous chairman and mentor, Dr. William Friedman, was being honored. And we were sort of introducing him and giving our little anecdotes. And I just remember that when I really sat down to think about it, the fact that he hired me as a woman — only the third woman to graduate from that program. “It was kind a risk for him to take. And when I looked out at the table full of current residents of UF (University of Florida) neurosurgery, there were more than half of them who were women. And it was a diverse group of people. It wasn’t a group at a table where every face looked the same. And I’m just so proud of the progress that we’re making. There’s a lot to do still, but we are definitely, definitely moving in the right direction.”

YOUNG BLACK WOMAN ENTREPRENEUR

American women tend to be under higher surveillance in beauty supply stores. Since they felt rushed, it was unlikely that they’d spend the time necessary for finding exactly what suited them. When the space beside her mother’s salon became available, it offered an opportunity for Paris to make a difference in her community. Though the store was originally offered to her mother, the entrepreneurial young woman used her savings to lease the space. That’s how Paris Beauty Supplyz was born in the summer of 2020. Paris is the first to admit that running a business wasn’t in her original plans. As she grew in her role as a business owner, however, another opportunity opened up. The building that her mother occupied had three stories but only two of them were being used. Since her mother had no plans for the top floor, Paris decided to open her own salon – La Eiffel Beauty Bar. While she loves her supply store, she calls the salon her “baby” because of how much work she put into it to add a personal touch. She’s not sure if she’ll expand further but there’s still a lot of time to find out the other ways she can help the Black people in her community and abroad. Though she’s doing well as a businesswoman, her first love has always been medicine. Originally, her aim was to work in orthopedic pediatric surgery. Even while working at her mother’s salon, she was taking her high school classes as well as a

Photo Source: blackprwire.com few college courses. When she graduated early, she immediately jumped into choosing the right college to continue on her path in medicine. Before she went to college, however, she made sure to put systems in place that allowed the stores to run well in her absence. Once she established her businesses, Paris changed her major to focus on nursing as she realized that this occupation was a

better fit for her. She’s looking forward to serving others in multiple ways. More than anything, Paris would like other Black girls and women to know that they can achieve their goals too. It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication on her part to get to where she is so she hasn’t shied away from showing that too. She wants people to look at her story and realize what’s possible.
