WOMEN'S H I S TI O R Y MONTH

WOMEN IN HISTORY MAKING BOSS MOVES From Negro History Week to Black History Month, the national celebration of Black excellence has become greater and more widespread than ever before. Black pioneers like Carter G. Woodsen and Jesse E. Moreland paved the way, but Black women definitely have kept the tempo. In honor of Women’s History Month, we are highlighting some historymaking Black women that should be on your radar! 5 WOMEN IN BLACK HISTORY YOU SHOULD KNOW

Barbara Gardner-Proctor

(1933-2018) Ms. Gardner-Proctor is in large part the reason Black men and women have their place in the world of advertising today. Raised in “dirt poor” circumstances, Gardner-Proctor built herself up and became the creator and owner of the largest Black-owned ad agency in the world by 1976. She’s even credited for The Beatles’ huge success from her days of working in radio advertising in London.

Annie Easley (1933-2011)

The film “Hidden Figures” opened many of our eyes to the unsung stories of Black women who played major roles in the launching of the first spaceship. The film showed us there were a few Black women who were the brains behind NASA and perhaps math’s greatest algorithms. While it’s about time women like Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson had their stories told, there are still Black women who have historically worked and excelled in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) who should be recognized as well. Annie Easley is one of those women. Similar to the leading ladies of Hidden Figures, Easley, a former Xavier University student, used her math and engineering proficiency to earn a position at NASA (then NACA - National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics), working as a programmer and played a role in many crucial projects. Much like the few Black women around her, her accomplishments were overlooked and she was sometimes

“erased” from the company’s public promotions altogether. Despite the challenging times, Easley is quoted as having had, “more good times than bad,” and will go down in history as a STEM Girl Boss. (Samorodnitsky, 2018. Massive science)

Ella Baker (1903-1986)

In the years of the Civil Rights Movement, there were many faces and names that went down in history as leaders of the movement. Very frequently, however, there are people who do not get the recognition they deserve for their efforts and fight towards human rights and social justice. Ella Baker is a name that may not seem familiar, but she was one of the many individuals who fought beside the likes of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Her interest in activism started when she was just a child who heard her grandmother’s stories of slavery and who faced discrimination herself growing up in the South. These experiences led her to champion for the under-served communities of the “Black, brown, and the poor.” In her adult years, she served on the staff of the NAACP before leaving and co-organizing a group that better aligned with her values; the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. With Baker’s assistance, the SNCC became one of America’s greatest organizations for the promotion of human rights. (Britannica)

Dr. Alexa Canady (1950-)

Dr. Alexa Irene Canady made history by becoming the FIRST woman and the first Black neurosurgeon in the United States of America. Let that marinate for a moment. It’s no secret that Black men and women have been excelling in the medical field for years, but a feat like Dr. Canady’s more than deserves its praise. Raised just outside of Lansing, Michigan, Dr. Canady came very close to quitting school in the middle of her college career, which would have changed history as we know it. Instead, she moved forward and blazed a trail for women of color. In today’s climate, it’s become increasingly important to have Black women

H I S T O RY - M A K I N G M O M E N T S Women of color simply #ROCK! They are resilient, compassionate, and dedicated to put it together, and keep it together. As we move into 2022, we have already seen tremendous firsts take form. The announcement President Joe Biden will name U.S. Circuit Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, replacing retiring Associate Justice Stephen Breyer

Marsai Martin (2004-)

Ringing in as the youngest history-maker on this list, she’s just getting started but has accomplished a huge milestone already in her 17 years of life. Marsai Martin became the youngest executive producer in America when Will Packer Productions decided to turn her film idea, “Little” into a reality. Martin began her career at a young age starring in national commercials before being cast as Diane Johnson in the hit

ABC sitcom, “Black-ish.” Since starring in “Black-ish,” she’s been seen in a number of other television programs and films and starred in and executive produced the film “Little,” which was released in 2019. From the Civil Rights Movements and science and math to the arts and international communications, women dominate in every field but aren’t always given the accolades they deserve. It’s imperative to keep women like the ones mentioned in our conversations not only to give praise but to motivate the future phenomenal, history-making women who are quickly coming to the stage. Every day is and will continue to be the time to celebrate Black History.

with a jurist who would become the first Black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court in its 233-year history. This is EPIC. From the incredible medals received at during the recent Winter Olympics in Beijing, to the history-making feats occurring each and every day throughout our country, we have much to be proud of

and thankful for. In 2021, women of color broke thru the glass ceilings on multiple fronts… To begin with, the Honorable Kamala Harris kicked off the year as the first Black Woman elected as the Vice President of the United States. This history-making moment was first rate. On the music front, the Queen B, Beyoncé, made history as the most Grammy-awarded artist ever! This was a history-making moment that the world will remember forever. Black country artist Mickey Guyton also made GRAMMYs history as the first black woman to be nominated for a GRAMMY in a Country Music category with the song “Black Like Me.” Her history-making moment proved that African Americans can also shine in the genre of country. In the world of Hip-Hop, Lauryn Hill became the first female rapper to sell ten million copies of The Miseducation of Lauryn

Hill, twenty years after its release. This is a history-making moment that indicates that the impact of Hip Hop will never cease. The world of sports was definitely not left behind. Jennifer King of Washington Football Team’s fame became the first Black female position coach in NFL history, creating a history-making moment where she totally shined. Last, but not least, Jessica Watkins became the first Black woman to live on the International Space Station, generating a history-making moment that was celebrated by the nation. These are just a few of the many history-making moments of our African American sheroes. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let’s salute these and other women for being history-makers. And let’s continue to empower and inspire future generation to continue to strive for greatness!

Is it Alzheimer’s? Or just signs of aging? Get screened and find out.

If you have trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating or making decisions that affect everyday life, the sooner you can find out what’s going on, the better.

Early screening of what’s known as your cognitive health, allows for earlier detection and diagnosis of potential Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. Early diagnosis means more time to plan for the future, express your preferences for care, adapt your home environment and seek support. Early diagnosis also provides opportunities to try new treatments that may help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms. We offer people who are experiencing possible early cognitive decline, the opportunity to participate in ongoing research studies/clinical trials that are focused on the early stage of this disease. Our Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease is one of 10 centers in New York State, funded in part by a grant from the New York State Department of Health.

To learn about available Alzheimer’s resources, research studies and clinical trials, or to participate in a free cognitive screening, call (631) 954-2323 or visit ceadlongisland.org.

DENTISTRY PARTNERS CELEBRATE NATIONAL DENTIST’S DAY March 6 is National Dentist's Day. Celebrated annually, National Dentist's Day is an opportunity to show appreciation for the dentists and dental specialists responsible for helping you keep those pearly whites healthy. Dentists play a vital role in keeping the mouth and the whole body healthy. Oral health is strongly connected to overall health, and this is because the mouth is the gateway to the rest of the body, and how you treat your teeth and gums can have lasting effects.

 Commit to better dental habits.  Schedule your dental checkup. Phanord & Associates, P.A. is a leading black-owned family dental practice that has been serving the community for over 30 years. The leading dental practitioner, Dr. Roger Phanord, is a doctoral graduate of the University of Florida College of Dentistry. Phanord & Associates opened in June of 1988 and recently expanded their practice by opening Sabal Palm Dental Associates,

P.A. in the Little Haiti community. Sabal Palm is now Phanord & Associates' sister company and a welcome addition to the dental community, as the Phanord family provides quality oral care at both dental practices. Phanord & Associates P.A. and Sabal Palm Dental Associates, P.A. are dedicated to serving patients in a caring and clean environment that allows them to feel safe and secure while receiving the best dental care.

"National Dentist's Day is a way to show appreciation and at the same time a reminder to those that have avoided going to the dentist to come for a checkup," said Dr. Roger Phanord. "Nothing makes us happier than knowing that our patients are making their dental care a top priority and that we are helping them to keep those pearly whites healthy."

Phanord & Associates P.A. is located at 1245 NW 119th Street in North Miami, Florida. Opening hours are Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Sabal Palm Dental Associates, P.A. is located at 5337 NE 2nd Avenue in Miami, Florida. To make an appointment, call 305-685-7863 or 305-758-0815.

Having a dental checkup is important because it helps to keep the teeth and mouth healthy. A regular dental checkup helps detect cavities and early signs of diseases like diabetes, leukemia, and oral cancer before the patient can even notice any symptoms. Here are some ways to celebrate National Dentist's Day:  Improve your oral health regimen.

Nicole Austin-Hillery, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF), today released the following statement on President Joe Biden’s nomination for U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson. “We are delighted with President Biden’s choice for the next Supreme Court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. This nomination is timely as we end Black History Month, celebrating the contributions of Black Americans and march into celebrating outstanding women for Women’s History Month. Milestones like these have been hard-won by years of back-breaking, often unrecognized work of ordinary women and activists and should be celebrated.

This moment is a step along the path towards equality, and even though we have a long way to go, inspiring women like Judge Jackson and this ground-breaking nomination gives us hope…. Ketanji Brown Jackson, an incredibly qualified judge with an extensive background in criminal justice reform, has an impressive resume filled with superb legal credentials, which are the standard for new justices. In addition, her service as a leading expert on federal sentencing policy and noteworthy experience representing low-income criminal defendants makes her a pioneering choice to join the United States Supreme Court…. When confirmed, Judge Jackson will become the first African American woman to sit on the Supreme Court in our nation’s history….

An adept federal judge and Harvard graduate, Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination is a significant step toward the culmination of CBCF’s vision of advancing the global Black community. Judge Jackson represents a fresh voice that will invigorate progress for women, and African Americans that many believed was unattainable until now. This will forever be a moment that changed Black and Women’s History. CBCF

COLLECTIVE OF BLACK WOMEN LE ADERS CELEBRATE AND CONGRATULATE JUDGE KETANJI BROWN JACKSON

Leaders of national Black women’s organizations and networks celebrated and congratulated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on her nomination to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. The historic nomination writes a new chapter in the history of Black women in America and for our democracy. Recognized as one of the brightest, most principled legal minds in the country, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s deep wisdom and understanding of the constitution, character, integrity, and dedication to rule of law will make her an excellent justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. Judge Jackson has seen the justice system from all sides, as a public defender, a Federal judge, member of the US Sentencing Commission and has family members who serve in law enforcement. The leaders also announced the formation of The Black Women’s Leadership Collective (BWLC), a leadership and organizing hub for Black women’s organizations, advocates, and supporters. Representing millions of

women across America, the BWLC will utilize the power of their collective efforts to support Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s historic nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. Lifted by the prayers and dreams of the ancestors, BWLC will work throughout the process to engage and mobilize our community, lift up Judge Jackson’s powerful story, and ensure her confirmation to the Supreme Court.  STATEMENTS FROM BL ACK WOMEN LEADERS (15 TOTAL) SHAVON ARLINE-BRADLEY, President, Delta for Women in Action: "Delta for Women in Action is thrilled by President Biden’s nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. We are proud of this exceptional nominee – who embodies the principles of our communities and brings lived experience. Black women remain one of the most engaged voting demographics, but we

remain underrepresented throughout the federal judiciary. The historic nomination of Judge Jackson will undoubtedly make an indelible mark on the Supreme Court for generations to come."

DONNA BRAZILE, Strategist and Political Commentator: “President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have wisely nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to become the first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. There were lots of exceptionally qualified capable women to choose from, but Biden’s selection of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson demonstrates that there’s no need for America’s highest court to be off limits to Black women anymore.” ROSLYN BROCK, Chairman, International Connection and Social Action Committee: "We stand united in the continued fight for Black women to be represented in all arenas important to the progress of our nation, and we are ready to walk arm-in-arm with this administration every step of the way as some of the very best and brightest Black women judges and attorneys are identified, vetted, interviewed, and presented to the United States Senate Judiciary Committee." ELSIE COOKE-HOLMES, National President & Chair of the Board, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. "The members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated applaud President Biden’s nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. Her impeccable experiences and qualifications make her an excellent choice for this most prestigious seat. It is our hope that this pivotal moment in history will bring the nation closer to achieving greater judicial diversity and we urge the U.S. Senate to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson without delay." MELANIE L. CAMPBELL, President and CEO of NCBCP, Convener of Black Women's Roundtable: "Today, as we close out Black History Month, we thank President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, for keeping their campaign commitment by nominating Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as the first Black woman U.S. Supreme Court Justice. The NCBCP Black Women’s Roundtable is working in coalition with our allies to ensure that this nominee is treated fairly and is confirmed without delay.” BISHOP LEAH DAUGHTRY, Co-Convenor, Power Rising: “With the nomination of Judge

Ketanji Brown Jackson, another barrier has fallen. After 233 years, the highest Court in the land will take a giant leap toward full representation of all of America’s people at the table of justice. We applaud President Biden and Vice President Harris on their selection of this exceptionally qualified, deeply experienced jurist. Her voice will help to ensure that our justice system reflects the diversity of all of us.”

GLYNDA CARR, President and CEO Higher Heights: "Black women have shown how powerful our activism can be, yet we are grossly underrepresented in leadership on every level. Since being in office, President Biden has demonstrated that he recognizes the value of diversity in his administration and has been living out that truth in the selections that he makes. Our country's leadership should reflect the people it serves, beginning with our nation's highest court, and Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will be that long-overdue representation." BRANDI COLANDER, APRIL REIGN, KIM TIGNOR & SABRIYA I. WILLIAMS, She Will Rise: “We are thrilled to see the President honor his commitment of creating a more representative Supreme Court. We believe Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is qualified and ready to serve. We stand at the ready to support a respectful confirmation process as we watch her rise.” JOTAKA EADDY, Convenor #WinWithBlackWomen: “Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is an exceptionally qualified jurist who will bring to the Supreme Court her expertise and commitment to the Constitution and values of our democracy. Most importantly, Judge Jackson will bring to the Supreme Court what it has lacked for 233 years - the lived experience of a Black woman. With this nomination President Biden and Vice President Harris will once again elevate a woman, and in this case, a Black woman, to a position that has long been covered by a cement ceiling - today that ceiling is shattered into a million pieces." KAREN FINNEY, Strategist, Commentator, Advocate: “Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson taking her place on the Supreme Court that first Monday in October 2022 will be one of the most inspirational moments in our nation’s history. Known for her brilliance, integrity, commitment to justice and our constitution, Judge Jackson will expand the diversity of expertise and lived experience on the court to the betterment of representative

democracy and justice in America. And frankly, it’s time. " DR. GLENDA B. GLOVER, International President & CEO, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Incorporated: “The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated applaud the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the highest court of the land. Her appointment is steeped in historical significance and represents yet another milestone in America fulfilling its promise to African Americans who helped build this country. We stand united in the continued fight for Black women to be represented in all arenas important to the progress of our nation and are ready to walk arm-in-arm with Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as she is presented to the United States Senate Judiciary Committee for confirmation.”

HOLLI HOLIDAY, President, Sisters Lead, Sisters Vote: “Two years ago, on February 25, 2020, presidential candidate Joe Biden made a campaign promise. He said, ‘I’m looking forward to making sure there’s a Black woman on the Supreme Court, to make sure we in fact get every representation.’ Today, President Biden kept his promise.” STAR JONES, Attorney, Advocate, Media Personality & Chair, U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad: “I’m absolutely thrilled at the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as our next Supreme Court Justice. It makes me extremely proud that President Biden and Vice President Harris are seizing this moment in history to lead with a vision of America at its best and ensuring that the leadership of our democracy reflects a diversity of lived experiences at the highest levels. As the first Black women to be nominated, the combination of outstanding credentials, character and lived experience of Judge Jackson ensures that our President has selected a nominee who is more than worthy of a lifetime appointment to our highest court.” RACHEL NOERDLINGER, Principal Noerdlinger Strategies: “I applaud the President and Vice President for delivering on their commitment to diversifying the nation’s highest legal body with his historic selection of the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court. While it does not change the ideological balance of the Court, it increases the likelihood that our needs and values as Black women will be represented.”
