Despite many young people defining their generation with the name of a video conference call app, the last two years saw the lowest levels of youth summer employment since the Great Recession, hitting young people from lower-income families especially.

For many people ages 16 to 24, having a summer work experience is the first opportunity to get a taste of professional life, learn and build skills, create connections and start a career journey.

JPMorgan Chase who has long been committed to ensuring that young people find meaningful first employment opportunities, just announced a new $20 million, five-year commitment to support Summer Youth Employment Programs in 24 U.S. cities starting this summer. THURGOOD MARSHALL FUND AWARDS ENTREPRENEURS Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s (TMCF) annual business competition “The Pitch” was held on May 2226, 2022 at Winston Salem State University. Collegiate innovators competed in a hybrid competition and were supported by innovative workshops and mock sessions. The event brought together over one hundred students from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) located all over the United States, in addition to 12 students who competed virtually through the Metaverse.

The first-place prize of $18,000 went to the TMCF MetaScholars Phoenix Team members, Zion Meslon, Morehouse College; Lance Davis, North Carolina A&T University; Nicolas Hardin, Southern University and A&M College; Marcellus Northington-Winston, North Carolina A&T University, and Georgiana Wright, Alabama A&M University.

As part of The Pitch, they competed in the Metaverse, a virtual reality experience, presenting a startup focused on storage protocol decentralization designed to store private and social data on any device. First-place winners also received internship opportunities at Fanbase and business coaching with Founder and CEO, Isaac Hayes III. As with many industries, there is a lack of representation in the dance world.

Neema Dance Collective provides a solution to this by ensuring diversity and inclusivity in their dance studios and performances.

Melanin aims to highlight Black excellence and representation in dance. This concert is about the performers feeling comfortable in their own skin – in dance and in the world. The performance consists of two showings, with the second featuring a father and daughter dance routine, an awards ceremony, and a surprise musical performance.

As a dancer and instructor, owner Grace Johnson-Wright knows firsthand the importance of diversity in dance and how it impacts young performers.

In framing this expanded understanding of melancholia, the exhibition begins with a historic survey of works by Black artists, many on loan from historically Black colleges and universities, including Howard, Spelman and Clark Atlanta, which represent some of the primary institutions collecting and exhibiting these works at the time of their creation. Foundational to the exhibition is the inclusion of artist Augusta Savage (1892–1962), whose work has largely been lost due to lack of preservation and stewardship. Her sculpture “Realization” (1936), which is presented via black and white photographs within the exhibition’s opening room, depicts a nude Black woman and man curled up next to her, representing the moment of realization of freedom of two previously enslaved individuals. Savage’s choice to show two figures establishes a counternarrative to the socially isolated individualistic pain of the white male subject, as embodied in Rodin’s “The Thinker” (conceived in 1880).

MOR GA N STAT E U N AM E D S YMETR A PARTNER With college graduation season in full swing, Symetra today announced a new national partnership with Morgan State University (MSU), among the nation's most diverse Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Symetra will provide multiyear, wraparound support for 25 MSU scholars by 2025, funding tuition and barrier reduction for students enrolled in the Actuarial Science program. The Symetra scholarship program is part of an initiative to promote diversity in opportunities and outcomes for students pursuing a post-secondary degree by partnering with HBCUs. “Symetra is proud to partner with Morgan State University on a new scholarship program designed to recognize and empower excellence by supporting highereducation and professional opportunities for Black students,” said Sharmila Swenson, Vice President, Public Affairs and Social Impact. “Symetra’s vision is to ‘create a world where more people have access to financial freedom.’ One way we can support that vision is to address the social and economic inequalities minority and underserved students often face by reducing opportunity barriers like lack of tuition and promoting a diverse workforce, particularly in STEM fields.”

The Symetra scholarship program provides each student recipient with two types of funding over four years: direct support and wraparound services. Direct support is given through scholarships for tuition and books,

while wraparound services offer financial support to meet critical student needs such as housing, food, clothing, transportation, or other emergency funding that might be a barrier to degree completion.

CARE will receive about $2.1 million for Upward Bound in Gadsden County and about $1.4 for Jackson County. Both grants cover five-year cycles.

“I’m very excited that we’ll receive additional funding to support and expand the lifechanging work we do,” Brown said. “I’m ecstatic and proud of the team we’ve put together, because this expands our reach.”

The U.S. government created Upward Bound as part of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. FSU launched it in Gadsden County in 1989, and administrators hail it today as one of the longest continuously funded Upward Bound programs in Florida.

The program serves traditionally underrepresented students in high school and gives them information, instruction, motivation, tutoring, testing help and more to ensure that they graduate from high school, then enroll in and graduate from college.

Brown saluted Upward Bound Gadsden County for a 100% high school graduation rate for students in the program in 2020 and 2021. And three students from this year’s program will enroll at FSU this summer or fall, he said.

Over the past two years, 80% of students enrolled immediately in college, and 95% proved proficient in Florida Standards Assessments.

“To have been consistently funded in Gadsden County since 1989 means the model we have works,” said Brown, an Upward Bound alumnus himself. “We’ve been able to graduate students from high school and get them enrolled in college. I’m a prime example of that.”

Brown made straight As and served as a campus leader in the 2000s when he attended East Gadsden High School, now Gadsden County High. Upward Bound helped him to explore colleges beyond Tallahassee and to discover an interest that would remain dear to him: the arts.

The program has stayed the course, with a “Saturday Academy” that conducts information workshops and takes students to see productions such as “Hamilton” or “The Nutcracker.” Upward Bound FSU also offers a Summer Residential Program that

allows students to experience living and learning on a college campus.

“It exposed us to something different and expanded our horizons,” Brown said about his experience in Upward Bound. “And the staff members were there to support us and be our biggest cheerleaders.”

Likewise for LaKesha Brown, an Upward Bound alumna who has worked in FSU’s program for more than five years. She recently became Gadsden County project director.

Like DeOnte Brown – no relation – she is a first-generation college graduate, as are all full-time staff in Upward Bound Gadsden County.

CARE officials say they expect Upward Bound to serve 80 students in Gadsden County and 60 in Jackson County beginning in the 2022-23 school year.

DeOnte Brown said CARE will use the new funds to hire additional staff members and to provide student experiences in Gadsden and Jackson counties, including college tours and ACT/SAT prep and college planning workshops.

“Those are big pieces of the college-going process, allowing students to actually see themselves on a college campus,” he said.

About 50 million people in the United States are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease because they lack the most basic needs — healthy food, clean air and drinking water, quality education, employment and housing.

Historically, people of color, including Black and Hispanics/Latinos individuals, have higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) largely due to social factors. For example, cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death for Americans – about 60% of adult Black men and women have CVD. Through the EmPowered To Serve Business Accelerator, the American Heart Association supports communities, small

businesses, social entrepreneurs and innovators who are working to reduce health disparities and create ground-breaking social change. Grants are a crucial part of this support as organizers of community health efforts struggle with fewer resources to address an increased demand for services.

The Association provides communities with a bank of resources that help them quickly address barriers to health equity.

Applicants must provide proposed business solutions to specifically address and improve challenges presented by the social determinants of health — the social and economic conditions in which people are born, live, learn, work and play — in historically excluded communities.

Upon selection, candidates will begin six weeks of intensive, online business training before presenting their proposed business solutions to a panel of expert judges at the EmPOWERED to Serve Business Accelerator Finale, which is scheduled to occur on October 20, 2022. At that time, select candidates will have the opportunity to receive financial grants to operationalize models in their specific communities.

The Accelerator’s core curriculum offers

formal instruction on design thinking, customer discovery, market positioning, brand development, fundraising and other essential business functions to help entrepreneurs enhance their business models and demonstrate the viability of projects.

Since 2017, the Accelerator program has trained nearly 80 social entrepreneurs and organizations and provided almost $900,000 in financial grants. Business Accelerator alumni continue to support the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association by participating in local volunteer boards and serving as brand ambassadors at special events and in community meetings.
