STARTING AND GROWING A SMALL BUSINESS IN NEW YORK Ever dreamed of owning your own business? If so, you’re not alone. You’re among more than 60% of Americans with the same aspiration. The good news is, there are resources to support you in making that dream your reality. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate toll on Black-owned businesses, but it’s also driven many companies to launch much-needed racial equity initiatives to support long-term recovery and economic growth in historically underserved communities. Our team at JPMorgan Chase, for example, has set aside 15,000 loans and $2 billion in capital for Black and Latino businesses that have been left behind for too long. Small businesses have the power to boost local economies, job creation and community development. But critical to their success is equipping small business owners with the capital, knowledge and tools necessary to start and develop a company. Jumoke (Joy) Fagbayi-Butts, based in New York, talks about her experience supporting businesses owners and offers advice, lessons learned, and more about working with Black-owned businesses. What’s the most important thing a first-time entrepreneur should know when starting a business? Joy Fagbayi-Butts: A foundational understanding of what you’ll need for a successful business is a good place to start. In my experience, I’ve found there are a few driving factors that can help you succeed: 1. A reliable network: Having a mentor – or access to someone who’s done this before has been valuable for many of my clients. Whether they’re asking questions, discussing ideas, or just offering general support, there are incredible champions right here in the local community. You can supplement a local strong support network with Chase workshops, panel discussions and summits, as well as our Chase for Business mailing list and social channels where you’ll find regular updates on networking and learning opportunities that are available. The Chase for Business offerings are great for both growing your knowledge of managing a business, as well as growing your network beyond your community. 2. A relationship with your banker: Banking is about relationships, so I encourage and welcome you to stop by a Chase branch or set up a digital appointment to begin cultivating one. We’re actively asking local Black entrepreneurs about their experiences and pain points, including questions like “What are your greatest barriers to financial success?” and “How can we help you overcome them?” The more we know about where you are struggling, the more we can help you find a solution. 3. Knowledge of operational tools: From digital payment systems to automated billing, there are countless tech-based software and service offerings available to simplify many aspects of managing a business. Digital media and marketing tools have also been game-changers for many of our clients as they look to reach and engage more customers. 4. Access to funding and loans: Starting a business costs money! Initial expenses can include everything from licenses to new equipment. Luckily, there are alternatives to covering these costs entirely on your own, like loans, grants, lines of credit and other capital set aside specifically for Black entrepreneurs. Funding is so important, to your previous point. How do most business owners go about securing capital and what options are available to Black business owners, specifically here in New York? Joy Fagbayi-Butts: In addition to the traditional options and types of capital I mentioned before, we’ve reserved low-cost loans specifically

2 | NewYorkTrendnyc

for Black-owned businesses. Many small business owners right here in New York are able to secure loans fairly quickly by working with the team here at Chase. When you come in, just ask us about the process for securing the funding you need and we’ll walk you through all of your options – ranging from loans to lines of credit – including your eligibility and the pros and cons of each. We strive to present you with every option – even the ones you may have not originally thought were right for you – to give you all the information you need to make the right decision for yourself and your business. You mentioned the importance of a strong network and supportive resources. Given disparities in business ownership among Black communities, what support do you offer that’s specifically tailored to address the unique needs of this community? Joy Fagbayi-Butts: The Advancing Black Entrepreneurs platform was built in collaboration with Black Enterprise, National Urban League and other organizations that understand firsthand the challenges Black communities have faced when starting a business. Many of my clients have said that the site’s free educational courses, on-demand resources and networking events have been extremely helpful in building the foundation they needed to successfully navigate their small business’s journey. You don’t even need to be a Chase customer to access these free resources. You brought up the many resources available through Advancing Black Entrepreneurs. Of the educational courses, resources and networking events, what are some of your clients’ recent favorites? Joy Fagbayi-Butts: The last few years have been difficult – especially for Black-owned business, so many have appreciated the content we’ve published on surviving the pandemic. Chase.com recently featured Shark Tank’s Daymond Johnson who discussed how Black business owners can navigate pandemic-driven problems. That webcast, along with the educational course on the same topic, offer some great advice – from the importance of bookkeeping to pivoting your business model and developing contingency plans. If you find yourself inspired to take the leap and start a business of your own, or grow your existing venture, visit a branch to find out more about the tools, resources and capital available to you. The NMHM 2022 theme is Give Your Community a Boost! This theme focuses on the continued importance of COVID-19 vaccination, including boosters, as one of the strongest tools we can use to protect others from the COVID-19 pandemic that has disproportionately affected communities of color. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), certain vulnerable populations, including some racial and ethnic minority groups, have a higher likelihood of vaccine hesitancy. Some people from racial and ethnic minority groups have declined vaccination because of misinformation and mistrust of the healthcare system. “During NMHM, we reiterate the importance of COVID-19 vaccines and boosters,” said Annie Neasman, President and CEO of JTCHS. According to the Center for American Progress, black and brown people are 4 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than their white counterparts, even though both use marijuana at similar rates. Don’t let lawmakers leave New Yorkers out in the cold. The COVID-19 pandemic hit New York hard. Thousands lost jobs. Many of us fell behind on paying utility bills. And now a shutoff moratorium that prevented providers from turning off our heat and electricity has expired. Without action from lawmakers, shutoffs could begin any day, leaving more than a million homes without heat, hot water, or electricity.

Joshua Beckford has never been a typical child. At two years old, he quickly mastered reading fluently using phonics and was speaking Japanese by the age of three. At the age of six,

he became the youngest person in the world to study Philosophy and History at the prestigious University of Oxford in England, gaining a distinction in both subjects. His father, Knox Daniel, said he first noticed his son was clever when he was

philosophy course for bright children between the age of eight and thirteen. They agreed, and Joshua was the youngest student ever accepted. He even passed with distinction. Named one of the smartest kids in the world, Joshua was far too academically advanced to attend third grade with his peers and was homeschooled instead. So, what does a super scholar study? Joshua excels at science, math, history, foreign languages and history. He dreams of being a neurosurgeon and is well on his way by practicing gall bladder removals and appendectomy procedures. “Since the age of four, I was on my dad’s laptop and it had a body simulator where I would pull out organs. I want to save the earth. I want to change the world and change people’s ideas to doing the right things about earth.” He also plans to be a neurosurgeon and is currently writing a children’s book about Egypt. But get this…he’s done all of this even with being diagnosed with autism. When he isn’t studying and achieving more than many adults, Joshua also

serves as the face of the National Autistic Society’s Black and Minority (BME) campaign. Diagnosed with high functioning autism, Joshua helps to spread the campaign’s mission of highlighting obstacles Blacks face when trying to obtain access to necessary autism support and services. According to a 2011 study, Autism and the African American Community, “evidence demonstrates that although rates of diagnosis for autism occur at the same rates in all racial groups, diagnosis in African American children occurs later than in White children. As a result, African American children may require longer and more intensive intervention.” In between studying to be the youngest neurosurgeon, Joshua enjoys fundraising for three Autism Charities, one in the U.K and two in Africa, and campaigns to save the environment. Between medical school and the years associated with that, Joshua should reach his goal of being named a Doctor within the next two years. Young Joshua is definitely living proof that no obstacle is too great to keep you from achieving greatness.

U.S. Department of Education is continuing to take action to support and invest in the teaching profession and address the teacher shortage many schools and districts across the country face. The Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) grant program is now accepting applications for efforts that increase the pipeline of highly effective educators. The SEED program will award $65 million to support the implementation of evidencebased practices that prepare, develop, or enhance the skills of educators. These grants also will enable recipients to develop, expand, and evaluate practices that can serve as models that can be sustained, replicated, and scaled. This program is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s broader commitment to supporting targeted efforts that will provide comprehensive, highquality pathways into the profession, such as residency and Grow Your Own programs, and evidence-based professional development all focused on building and supporting a more diverse educator pipeline and combating the teacher shortage nationally. “We know that in order to improve education across the country and meet our students where they are, we must invest in teacher professional learning, recruitment, and

student. Building an education system that is the best in the world requires an investment in our dedicated teachers.” As states, districts, and schools are working hard to address the impact of COVID-19 on students’ social, emotional, mental health, and academic needs, many of them are facing significant challenges in attracting and retaining teachers. Preexisting teacher shortages in critical areas such as special education; multilingual education; science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); career and technical education; and early childhood education have only been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic— directly impeding student access to educational opportunity.

We are ready to act on that!” said Secretary Cardona. “This grant competition will support institutions of higher education, national nonprofits, and other eligible partners that provide teachers and school leaders with effective strategies for building inclusive, unbiased, and safe learning environments that support the academic, social, and emotional needs of every

The SEED program fosters the use of rigorous evidence-based practices in selecting and implementing strategies and interventions that support educators’ development across the continuum of their careers. Support for educator preparation programs and high-quality professional development are vital to ensure that all students have access to well-prepared and qualified teachers, principals, and other school leaders. These programs invest in educators who are effective and likely to stay in the profession. Research

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE ONLINE Research has shown that over 80% of children (aged 12-15) may have been subjected to harmful experiences online, which has led to heightened searches for “cyber safety” (20.5K) and “cyber security” (451.9K), according to Google trend data. Child game platforms such as Roblox have amassed over 47 million daily active users globally and are moving towards metaverse technology. With increasing concern over child safety in the metaverse and social media usage, experts at OnBuy Smart Watches spoke exclusively to cyber security expert James Bore, who has been in the industry for more than 10 years and has provided professional advice for keeping children safe online.

are in place and what they do. Children are inventive, and most parental control tools can be worked around by any child with a sense of curiosity and a desire to push boundaries. Other key questions and conversations for parents to ask and discuss include:  What social media applications do they use, if any? Do they have any games with

To accompany James’s advice, in-house experts at OnBuy Smart Watches also manually trawled through internet safety threads across major parenting forums, such as Mumsnet, Netmums, and MadeforMums, to compile a uniquely collated list of cyber security threats and top tips directly from parents as to how they can protect their children online.  Expert Comments from Chartered Security Expert, James Bore: 1. Open Dialogue Ensuring that children are aware and encouraged to talk about anything that they’re unsure about. This means creating a safe space where your child won’t feel judged or worried about being told off for anything that happens. It is far too often that when people do prey on children online, they use the idea that adults in the child’s life will be angry at them, and that things are their fault. The difference it can make when they can have clear, honest communications with parents or guardians is huge, and is arguably the biggest step towards online safety. 2. Explanation of safety and censorship tools. Allowing your child (particularly older children) to understand why certain rules

social media functions or chat?  Make sure they understand privacy settings, and go through them with them.  Make sure they understand that people lie, and they should not meet anyone they only know online.  Do they understand about online harassment and bullying, how to recognize if they’re targeting someone, or being targeted, and what to do about it?  Do they play any games which allow ingame purchases, and do you have control over their ability to spend  OnBuy Smart Watches scraped online parenting forums to reveal 5 key ways parents can protect their children online easily:

1. Explicit websites Search engines for kids and filtering programs can be effective in allowing parents to control what sites children can see. Netmums recommends Net Nanny – which monitors online content, limits screen time and filters sites to protect your children. OnBuy Smart Watches discovered that parents also recommended the following search engines for kids – Aj Kids and Kids Search, whilst users on Mumsnet suggest censoring thread titles on the forum (keep Mumsnet forum names PG) so that children are not exposed to explicit words if they happen to look over at the computer screen. 2. Inappropriate instructional websites Netmums refers to ‘inappropriate instructional websites’ as sites that promote step-by-step instructions for inappropriate topics such as concealing anorexia or taking drugs. These can be accessed through other genuinely useful instructional sites, and so run the risk of being taken seriously by children. OnBuy Smart Watches found advice on all of the reviewed parenting forums pointing towards blocking inappropriate websites, or downloading software that prevents popups and inappropriate instructional sites from popping up. 3. Chat room safety Mumsnet users suggest bans on ‘Whatsapp’ and social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter are all rated 13+) for younger children. However, parents are aware that there may be other chat room apps so suggest daily monitoring of your child’s phone. Regular checks can ensure that your children are staying safe on chat rooms and that nothing goes unmissed. Other users on the forum also suggest locking or removing the device overnight, so that your child gets adequate sleep and isn’t exposed to unsolicited and unmonitored messages when unaccompanied. 4. Cyberbullying According to the Anti-Bullying Alliance –

shows that existing educator shortages disproportionately impact students of color, students from low-income backgrounds, students with disabilities, and, often, rural communities. Coinciding with today’s announcement, this afternoon the Department is hosting a webinar focused on “Strengthening Partnerships Between States, School Districts, and Higher Education to Increase the Number of Teacher Candidates Prepared to Enter the Classroom and Provide Immediate Support to Schools.” During the webinar, Education Department representatives will discuss Secretary Cardona’s recent call to action for states, institutions of higher education, and school districts to commit to using American Rescue Plan and other federal relief funds to help address teacher shortages. Representatives also will share how federal relief funds and opportunities through the U.S. Department of Labor can and are being used to address teacher shortages and provide support to schools by establishing or scaling up teaching residency and apprenticeship programs. The Department recognizes the value of supporting educators and is committed to providing resources and opportunities that uplift the educator workforce.

one in five schoolchildren in the UK has been a victim of some form of online abuse. Netmums highlight the importance of open communication with your child, in a bid to quickly identify when bullying might be taking place. Parents also suggest teaching your kids techniques for dealing with cyberbullies, such as muting chats and reporting bullies on social media. If your child is a victim of cyberbullying from their peers, Mumsnet advises getting their school involved. This will escalate the situation and send a clear message to the bullies that their behaviour is unacceptable. It will also make your child feel more supported and safer in the school environment. 5. Phishing Mumsnet users advise to send any incidents of online phishing to: report@phishing.gov. uk as soon as it’s spotted. Other advice includes either ignoring phishing emails/ messages or changing your settings so that mail from that scam address goes straight to the deleted folder.  Methodology: 1. Experts at OnBuy Smart Watches were keen to explore how parents can keep their children as safe as possible online. 2. In-house experts created a seed list of popular cyber and tech safety related words and phrases using online search volume tool SEMrush. 3. OnBuy Smart Watches identified Mumsnet, Netmums, and MadeforMums as the most reputable sources for up to date parenting information which could be used for research purposes. 4. OnBuy Smart Watches then scraped the most popular forums and community threads to compile a list of top tips directly from parents as to what they should look out for when purchasing smart gadgets and how to use them safely. 5. Cyber security expert James Bore was also contacted and asked about the best ways that parents can protect their children online. 6. All data was collected on 02/02/2022 and is subject to change.

Ross’ behind-thescenes work on the film Inside Man is matched by his service as a film lecturer, adjunct professor and guest speaker at prestigious schools as VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University), Old Dominion University, Clark Atlanta and Florida A&M University. Ross’ first production with Ours Studios is As If We Were Ghosts, a documentary that will debut June 13 and June 19 (Juneteenth), 2022, on every station in the Georgia Public Broadcasting System. The production, the first of five planned, highlights the harsh treatment of Black high school athletes during segregation and their unwavering spirit to overcome challenges.

became stars and widely recognized,” says Bivins. “But most people just know of their accomplishments, not the racism and challenges they faced on their way to stardom. Yet, it is just as important to recognize those Black athletes such as 91-year-old Charles Freeman who was on the basketball team at the Colored High School in Eatonton that won the state basketball championship among Black schools in 1949-50. These were the real ghosts.” Telling these stories is just one reason why Ross took a break in his busy schedule to spend a year as Filmmaker-in-Residence. “I am delighted and honored to not only work on As If We Were Ghosts for Ours Studios, but to have this filmmaker-in-residence opportunity,” says Ross. “Within the next year, we hope to produce four more episodes building from the original documentary,” he continued.

Also, Ross says that he is “just as excited as to spend the year on my passion — making great films and bringing more emerging filmmakers into the industry. During the yearlong residency, we will immerse students in theory, practical and financial elements of good filmmaking. Georgia has a thriving film industry and I’m honored to help get young people interested in film so they can carry on producing stories, such as As If We Were Ghosts that tell vital stories and help to fill in the blanks about the realities inflicted on Black people throughout our history,” says Ross. Ours Studios is a Black-owned and financed company that produces film and documentaries. as well as offers a wide range of production services and spaces. In addition, its state-of-the-art studios rentals are designed to make audio, video and livestreams for podcasts and vlogs and has two converted warehouses

dedicated for film, video, and photography productions. The studio’s first documentary is As If We Were Ghosts, about how the athletic and musical accomplishments of students in Black high schools in Georgia were ignored and erased from history. Four more productions of this theme are set to be produced. The show will air on all Georgia Public Broadcasting stations in June, including on June 19th for the celebration of Juneteenth. Ours Studios CEO is business tycoon Ron Bivins and its COO is Dr. Ann Wead Kimbrough, a former reporter with the Atlanta Journal Constitution and the Atlanta Business Chronicle as well as a college dean and professor. Monty Ross, who cofounded 40 Acres and a Mule with Spike Lee and co-produced many of their most successful movies, is a current Filmmaker-in-Residence at the studios helping develop future stars in the film industry.

“We call these star athletes “ghosts” because their high school recordbreaking athletic, coaching and musical achievements and awards were ignored, buried, and in some cases, burned during the violent Jim Crow and segregated era in Georgia,” says Ron Bivins, CEO of Ours Studios LLC. Bivins is a graduate of one of the nearly 200 former Georgia Black high schools whose athletes, now in their 60s to 90s, were “ghosted” by the white society. Their accomplishments will finally be recognized and given their proper place in history thanks to the production. “We have to acknowledge that we were here,” he says. Ross signed on to complete the production of As If We Were Ghosts when his former classmate at Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University) and COO of Ours Studios, Dr. Ann Wead Kimbrough, told him about the project. Both natives of Omaha, NE, they knew this was a story that the world needed to know about and one that was replicated in Black high schools across the country. Ross, along with former GPB producer, Nwandi Lawson, worked together reviewing hours of film footage, as well as conducted live interviews with former professional athletes who suffered through the ills of discrimination and into the Civil Rights Movement. Among those profiled include NBA stars Walt Frazier and Don Adams, Olympians Edith McGuire and Wyomia Tyus, and baseball great Hank Aaron. “Yes, these athletes made it into the big leagues and
