100 Annual Conference, the world’s leading conference and exhibition focused on mentoring, educating and empowering youth and leaders from the African American community is set to convene in South Florida. The 100 Black Men of America, Inc.’s global network will hold their 32nd Annual Conference June 13-17, 2018 at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood.

This annual conference brings together thought leaders from across many industries including business, education, healthcare, financial, small business development, nonprofit, law enforcement, government, civic engagement, technology and entertainment to provide a unique mentoring and an experiential learning platform for youth from across the country.

Citywide STUDENT VOTER REGISTRATION Day Held   

Mayor Bill de Blasio joined high school seniors at the Manhattan Hunter Science High School today for New York City’s firstever citywide Student Voter Registration Day, which aims to help register all eligible students who are currently 18 years old or will turn 18 by November 6, 2018. SVRD is part of the City’s Civics for All initiative announced earlier this year, which will also include new civic engagement curriculum and resources that address current events, participatory budgeting for New York City high school students, and new professional development for teachers.

“Young people across the nation have been speaking up loudly for their values.

To sustain real change, we must bring that activism to the ballot box,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Our first –ever citywide student voter registration day will help more young people get involved in the civic process and make our democracy stronger.”

“With Student Voter Registration Day and our investments in civic education, New York City schools are helping the children and young adults of today become the active, engaged citizens of tomorrow,” said Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza. “This is so essential to our work as educators, and it’s part of the reason I became a teacher. I’m excited to hear from students and schools across the City about their Student Voter Registration Day activities, and to see more young New Yorkers raising their voices and going to the polls.”

At the same time, we will continue working to ensure our laws are changed to make voting more accessible and easier for all New Yorkers,” said Deputy Mayor Philip Thompson.

The City’s Civics for All initiative includes:  Curricula for Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 that explore civic ideals and civic

participation related to freedoms, rights and responsibilities of people in the community and nation. Grade 6-8 curricula will be piloted this fall.  $2,000 per high school for a student participatory budgeting process. Students will identify priorities and direct the spending of the $2,000. This will be piloted at a small group of high schools this fall.  Training teachers in the civic education curriculum and in facilitating civic action projects.  Providing resources throughout the school year that will address current events such as elections, Supreme Court decisions, and major government and civic news.

Civics for All builds on existing work to strengthen civics and social studies education, including NYC’s Passport to Social Studies curriculum, which has been adopted by over 70 percent of the City’s elementary and middle schools in just its second year. The Passport to Social Studies curriculum integrates civic participation practices with the curriculum content through social science and historical thinking skills. Mayor de Blasio has been an advocate for reforming the State’s antiquated voting laws. He is pushing for the Senate to pass legislation that would allow individuals that are at least 16 or 17 years old to pre-register to vote and become automatically registered when they turn 18.

He is also pushing for the Legislature to pass other measures that would expand access to early voting, require the use of electronic poll books, allow same-day voter registration, allow no-excuse absentee voting, authorize automatic voter registration at state or local agencies, and reform the NYC BOE. “Voting matters - but with all the barriers that new voters face before getting to the ballot box, it’s harder than ever for young people to make their voices heard. With Student Voter Registration Day, New York City is taking a critical step forward in raising civic participation among our next generation,” said New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer. “When it comes to the issues facing our city, from climate change to accessible transit options, the stakes are highest for our young people. Empowering our next generation to register to vote and show up at the polls is how we will make the progress we need - not just for our city, but for our democracy.”

NYC First Lady Launches LGBTQ YOUTH AD CAMPAIGN

First Lady Chirlane McCray has announced the launch of “We Are LGBTQ Youth,” a sweeping new ad campaign aimed at increasing the visibility of LGBTQ young people and connecting them to LGBTQ-affirming services available across the City, from health and safety supports to education and legal rights. The campaign is part of the NYC Unity Project, a citywide effort to make New York City the most welcoming city in the nation for LGBTQ youth.

“We Are LGBTQ Youth” ads feature 17 different young LGBTQ New Yorkers proudly expressing who they are and encouraging all LGBTQ youth to learn more about the array of City programs and supports accessible through nyc. gov/unityproject. The campaign will run across the City’s subways, buses, and digital platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram through the end of June 2018. “For so many young people, New York City is the first place they can completely and unapologetically be themselves. I felt that way when I first came to the city and I want to make sure it continues to be that way,” said First Lady Chirlane McCray, co-chair of the Commission on Gender Equity and lead for the NYC Unity Project. “This ad campaign sends a strong message to all young people that NYC is their home and they are always welcome. We want every young LGBTQ person to know that New York City supports them and there is always somewhere they can turn if they need help.”

NYC Unity Project resources are housed within the recently-launched Generation NYC digital platform, a first-of-its-kind digital platform for New Yorkers ages 13-24. This groundbreaking “mobile first” website – accessible by phone, tablet, or computer – was designed to help all young New Yorkers of all backgrounds and identities navigate the sometimes challenging waters of adolescence and young adulthood by offering tailored resources and opportunities. With today’s launch, the platform now features NYC Unity Project and LGBTQ-specific resources.

NYC Unity Project is the City’s first coordinated, multi-agency effort to address the unique challenges and needs of LGBTQ youth. The NYC Unity Project lays out a bold commitment to deepen and expand upon the City’s investments in LGBTQ services, programs, and policy change, prioritizing the needs of LGBTQ young people.

“When I was young, I saw barely any images of LGBTQ people like me in ads, on TV, or in the media. We’ve certainly come a long way since the old days of the 80’s and 90’s but not far enough!” said NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson. “I applaud First Lady Chirlane McCray for launching this ad campaign to increase the visibility of members of my community and educate them on city services that were designed to help them.”

 In June 2016, New York City became the first municipality to launch a citywide campaign specifically affirming the right of trans-gender individuals to use the bathroom consistent with their gender identity or expression.  In March 2016, Mayor de Blasio issued an executive order requiring City agencies to ensure that employees and members of the public are given equal access to City single-sex facilities without being required to show identification, medical documentation or any other form of proof or verification of gender.  In December 2015, the NYC Commission on Human Rights issued legal enforcement guidance defining specific gender identity protections under the City Human Rights Law, including equal bathroom access, as well as access to housing, employment, public accommodations, and other protections.

Known for its “powerfully engaging” (New York Arts) and “contemporary and fresh” (Theatre Is Easy) choreography, Ariel Rivka Dance (ARD) collaborates with the acclaimed Amy Marshall Dance Company and choreographer/dancer Chanel DaSilva for a season of provocative dance dedicated to empowering female expression.

An audience favorite for its accessible, graceful signature style of movement, the all-female ARD celebrates its 11th season under the helm of choreographer Ariel Grossman. Program includes two world premieres

by Grossman, one by DaSilva, and beloved repertory by both Grossman and Marshall.

Nine HBCUs were awarded a total of $360,000 grants to make sustainable campus improvements across their campuses. To date, the program has awarded more than $2.1 million dollars in grants to HBCUs. The nine winning schools were selected by a combination of cumulative online voting scores and grant proposals that were submitted by the schools and judged by a panel of distinguished judges, including Howard University alumnus, and film and television star Laz Alonso, Dr. Ivory Toldson, President and CEO, QEM (Quality Education for Minorities) Network; Gregory Moore, Esq.,Commissioner, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC); Michael Tabb, Managing Partner, Red Rock Global and Melissa Brown, Senior Manager, Marketing, The Home Depot.

NYC First Lady Launches LGBTQ YOUTH AD CAMPAIGN

Earlier this year, the de Blasio administration opened Marsha's House—named after famed LGBTQ activist Marsha P. Johnson—in the Bronx, the first-ever shelter for LGBTQ young persons in the New York City adult shelter system, offering nearly 90 homeless individuals, 30 years and under, the opportunity to be sheltered in a welcoming and supportive space that provides targeted resources.

The administration has also funded 500 additional beds for runaway and homeless youth, all of which are available to LGBTQ youth. By June 30, 2018, the total number of beds will expand to 653. This total will increase to 753 by the end of June 2019.

“Thank you to First Lady Chirlane McCray for advocating for our LGBTQ youth. This new campaign will make sure our city feels like a safe and inclusive place for all children and teenagers. MAYOR and CHANCELLOR Announce Increase Of 3-K FOR ALL 83 percent of families said their child learned “a lot” in pre-K. Across the board, the research shows that both students and families are seeing critical benefits from Pre-K for All. Like Pre-K for All, 3-K for All relies on the partnership of communitybased organizations, including Head Start, EarlyLearn providers, child care agencies, and family child care providers. As part of the larger effort to strengthen birth-to-five care and education across the City, EarlyLearn programs are transitioning from ACS to management by DOE in 2019. This transition is being led by ACS and DOE, with engagement with other city agencies, such as the Human Resources Administration and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, as well as providers, early childhood care and education experts, and State and federal regulators.

Creating a unified birth-to-five early care and education system will benefit children, families, and providers. It will enable consistent, high-quality standards, greater curricular alignment from early childhood through second grade, a single contracting relationship and set of supports for early childhood

education providers, integrated data collection, and seamless connections between early childhood development and 3-K-through-12 education. In addition to programs serving three- and four-year-olds, EarlyLearn programs serving children from six-weeksold through four-years-old are also transitioning to management by DOE, including center- and home-based programs.

3-K for All and Pre-K for All are part of the Mayor and Chancellor’s Equity and Excellence for All agenda. Together, the Equity and Excellence for All initiatives are building a pathway to success in college and careers for all students.

Our schools are starting earlier – free, full-day, high-quality education for threeyear-olds and four-year-olds through 3-K for All and Pre-K for All. They are strengthening foundational skills and instruction earlier – Universal Literacy so that every student is reading on grade level by the end of 2nd grade; and Algebra for All to improve elementaryand middle-school math instruction and ensure that all 8th graders have access to algebra. They are offering students more challenging, hands-on, college and career-aligned coursework

– Computer Science for All brings 21stcentury computer science instruction to every school, and AP for All will give all high school students access to at least five Advanced Placement courses. Along the way, they are giving students and families additional support through College Access for All, Single Shepherd, and investment in Community Schools. Efforts to create more diverse and inclusive classrooms through Diversity in New York City Public Schools, the City’s school diversity plan, are central to this pathway.

WINNERS of Annual Awards for Excellence in Design Announced

Mayor Bill de Blasio, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, Public Design Commission President Signe Nielsen, and Executive Director of the Commission Justin Garrett Moore, today announced the winners of the 36th Annual Awards for Excellence in Design. This year’s projects were honored for remarkable designs that enliven neighborhoods, improve recreational and cultural spaces, and preserve New York City’s historic gems.

“These eleven winning schools, parks, libraries, museums, and artworks aren’t only beautiful – they enrich their communities by bringing revitalizing existing spaces and creating vibrant new ones,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

In coordination with NYCxDESIGN – an annual citywide celebration of innovative art and design from around the world – this year’s awards recognize projects that help fulfill the de Blasio Administration’s commitment to providing for a more equitable, resilient, and diverse city for all New Yorkers.

Projects include the reconstruction of Garrison Playground and renovation of the Brownsville Recreation Center, both of which will provide communities with much-needed recreation and amenities with human-centered designs.

The Studio Museum in Harlem’s new building, the renovation of the Hamilton Fish Park Branch Library and the installation of artworks at the Westchester Library and Snug Harbor Music Hall will enhance the City’s cultural offerings, providing inspiration and educational opportunities.

The stabilization and lighting of the New York State Pavilion, the adaptive reuse of the World’s Fair Reflecting Pool, and the restoration of the Concert Grove Pavilion will preserve New York City’s rich historic fabric for the enjoyment of future generations. In addition, a new education center and hotel at Cornell’s Roosevelt Island campus will act as the northern gateway to this center for learning, while a prototypical design for City plaza kiosks will offer a sleek and cost-effective solution to maintaining public plazas.

“The Public Design Commission is pleased to recognize these outstanding public projects, which prove that thoughtful design is a critical component of providing quality, equitable, and sustainable public spaces to all New Yorkers. By utilizing key principles of good design, these projects will provide new opportunities for education and recreation, offer inspirational artworks and cultural programming, and preserve our city’s historic structures and public plazas for the future enjoyment of New Yorkers and visitors,” said Public Design Commission President Signe Nielsen.

 The Public Design Commission  The Public Design Commission reviews permanent works of architecture, landscape architecture, and art proposed on or over Cityowned property. The Commission comprises 11 members, including an architect, landscape architect, painter, sculptor, and three lay members, as well as representatives of the Brooklyn Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, and the Mayor.

Members of the Commission serve pro bono and meet once per month.

Projects considered for the annual awards are submitted by City agencies and include the construction, renovation, or restoration of buildings and other structures; the creation or rehabilitation of parks, playgrounds, and plazas; installation of lighting and other streetscape elements; signage; and the installation and conservation of artwork and memorials. The Commission has been honoring extraordinary projects annually since 1983.
