DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL DEBATE

THE ALTERNATIVE PERSPECTIVE

Since 1989

CLINTON AND SANDERS LEAD

The most recent republican debate included eleven candidates. The first Democratic debate, which aired on CNN and was moderated by Anderson Cooper last Tuesday, had only five candidates….FIVE!! Now, there are many reasons for the number disparities amongst the two parties: the republican field is larger in part because there is a Democrat in the White House and because there is a powerleadership vacuum within the Republican culture. However, as Democratic presidential candidate and Senator, Bernie Sanders, has repeatedly said, ”our democracy functions because our voting eligible citizens have confidence that they can exercise the power of choice.“ An argument can be made that the Republicans, whose political platforms tend to support shirking the voting base, are offering the most power of choice to their audience. While the democrats, who tend to support widening the electorate, are internally limiting the power of democratic voter’s choices. In any event, the entire American electorate will have at least some semblance of a choice to make in regards to the selection of a Democratic nominee. Running this year is former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, former Senator and Governor from

“Democratic socialism does not create an economy that prevents small businesses from succeeding,” — Senator Bernie Sanders Rhode Island Lincoln Chafee, former Senator from New York and former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Senator from Vermont, Bernie Sanders. The topics of the debate ranged from Hilary Clinton’s email scandal to whether or not Bernie Sanders had a right to be at a democratic debate because he identifies as a democratic socialist. However, despite the propensity for many of the initial questions to focus on the most shallow and unimaginative of issues surrounding the candidates, eventually this debate

became a much more legitimate presentation of substance than its Republican equivalent. The points made by the satellite candidates that are polling at less than one- per cent, were basically talking points that have been making the rounds in the political pundit circles for the past year. Because Hilary is polling at above thirty –percent and Bernie is close behind, what they professed is what lead to the most reactions and honestly will have the most impact on who becomes the nominee.

There was back and forth banter between all of the candidates, but the most intriguing was the discussion over capitalism. In this discussion lies the crux of Bernie’s choice argument. Hilary basically espoused that capitalism allows the small business owner to sustain and grow businesses. In Hilary’s opinion, capitalism is inherently supportive to social mobility and the American dream. Sanders however, explained his democratic socialist views. “Democratic socialism does not create an economy that prevents small businesses from succeeding,” said Sanders “rather it limits large, conglomerate corporations from essentially boxing small businesses out of the market.“ “Democratic socialism also increases the power of choice. With more financial power amongst the voting base and with less large scale donors being able to choose who our candidates, we may see more political parties appear,” said Sanders. For this reason, Bernie Sanders, despite opinion polls won the debate. Unlike any other candidate in the election on either side of the aisle, Sanders is offering a policy agenda that not only works in the U.S. but throughout the world. Sanders debate performance earned respect and established him as a force to be reckoned with in this race.
