JOURNALIST JOHN JOHNSON HONORED BY CITY COLLEGE OF NEW YORK AT PRESIDENTIAL AWARDS DINNER A full house of 300 packed the Mandarin Oriental Hotel’s Mandarin Ballroom on June 8th to honor four distinguished industry leaders at The City College of New York’s 12th Annual Presidential Awards Dinner. One of those honored was retired Emmy Award-winning journalist John Johnson, City College of New York Classes of 1961 and 1963, for encouraging and inspiring future generations in media.

There are also priceless objects and photographs from his decades of reporting on wars in the Middle East, Somalia and Bosnia; politics and the human condition; and interviews with prominent world figures.

The world is full of ambitious people with big ideas. Unfortunately, often the big idea is to separate you from your money. Don’t get scammed. If you’re considering making a large investment in a start-up or early stage company, follow these nine tips to avoid becoming a victim: 1. Understand the business plan. You need to understand the business you are investing in. If you don’t understand it, don’t invest in it. Before you think about writing a check, ask: • What is the company going to do with your money?

• Does the company have enough money to do what it says it’s going to do?

• What does the company sell?

• Who is going to buy?

• Who is competing in this market?

• How does the company make money?

• When do you get to see some profits?

• If the company succeeds, when do you get to sell your equity?

If you don’t understand it, don’t invest in it.

2. Don’t get stampeded into investing before you’re ready. Show me a guy who insists that you’ve must invest RIGHT NOW and I’ll show you a scam. Promoters of legitimate ventures will encourage you to take your time, consult your lawyer and ask questions. It’s your money. Invest when you’re ready.

3. Talk to other investors. Ask the promoter to put you in touch with other investors. Here are a few questions to get you started:

NINE TIPS ON AVOIDING INVESTMENT SCAMS

• How do you know the promoter?

• Can you tell me about the business?

• When did you invest?

• Do you have common stock (or membership units)? Preferred?

If preferred, what are the differences between common and preferred?

• What about this company convinced you to invest?

If the promoter won’t let you talk to other investors, or the other investors seem sketchy, run away!

4. Talk with the Company’s lawyer.

If an emerging company is taking money from investors, it should have a lawyer.

Ask for the name of the lawyer and ask permission to call him or her. The purpose is to find out some valuable information: •Does the lawyer really exist?

• Is the lawyer a bona fide experienced attorney with a deep background in business?

Nothing can kill a start-up faster than incompetent legal advice. Even if all of the other fundamentals are good, a company with poorly drafted documents and agreements is a disaster waiting to happen.

If the company does not have a reputable legal counsel that is a big red flag.

5. Ask commonsense questions.

When a promoter tells you about the fabulous returns his venture is going to earn, ask some common-sense questions: • Why haven’t 100 other companies rushed into this market?

• Why haven’t the big private equity firms snapped up this deal?

• Why doesn’t the promoter simply borrow the needed funds from a bank, so that he only has to pay interest and can keep the profits for himself?

Scammers tell stories that you want to believe. Sometimes the best question is: “why do I deserve this generosity?”

6. Don’t get shamed into investing.

The scam artist’s best trick is often to make you feel insecure. If you ask an uncomfortable question, the scammer will make you feel naive and foolish for asking such a “silly” question. It is human nature to crave the admiration and approval of others.

7. Resist “Fear of Missing Out.” We’ve all heard the stories (many apocryphal) of the guy who passed on an opportunity to be an early investor with Warren Buffett, Sam Walton or Bill Gates.

Scammers prey upon this fear. They’ll convince you that this is a “once in a lifetime” chance to get rich. They want to create a sense of psychological urgency.

When you start to feel that sensation in the depths of your soul, CHECK YOURSELF! Most scams, in retrospect, are painfully obvious. Scams work because they cause your brain to shut off for just long enough to write a check. Resist the fear of missing out and you’ll avoid getting scammed.

8. Meet the promoter in person. Don’t invest based on a phone call, or worse, an email. Meet the promoter in person. Find out what his story is. Does the story make sense? Does he know that a person with his background ought to know? Do you trust him?

Because scammers are quite persuasive, you must use a meeting to tease out a lot of biographical information, it will put you in a position to go back, do some more diligence, and see if the guy checks out.

9. Engage a smart business lawyer to kick the tires. If you’re going to invest your money, paying for a lawyer can save you from a very expensive mistake. You want a lawyer to investigate the promoter, make inquiries into his background and knows how to spot a scam. It’s amazing the number of successful people who invest without legal counsel.

Don’t be one of them. Follow these steps and chances are good you can avoid getting taken by a charlatan peddling fools gold.

GUEST COMMENTARY FOX NEWS FAVORITE ‘PEOPLE’S SHERIFF’ SHOULD DROP THE ACT

accusations of police discrimination and racial mistreatment is tantamount to treason. He is unapologetic in his blind defense of law enforcement officials, even in the most egregious circumstances. After the Justice Department released its report detailing “unlawful bias” among Ferguson’s police force, Sheriff Clarke immediately took to Fox to emphatically reject the findings, calling them a “witch hunt.” “I’m not buying one word of [Holder’s] conclusion,” he told Neil Cavuto.

“The attorney general doesn’t have any integrity anymore.”

Milwaukee County’s David Clarke could be a valuable voice in the national conversation over police violence. Instead he’s on Fox News blaming ‘black underclass subculture behavior.’

You may have seen Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke on one of his numerous appearances on the Fox News Channel lashing out at President Obama.

You might recognize him from his appearance before the National Rifle Association proposing the placement of a semi-automatic rifle on our country’s presidential seal. You may have even watched his infamous 2013 campaign ad advocating vigilantism instead of dialing 911 in the event of a burglary.

The country is just now getting to know Sheriff Clarke, but I’m all too familiar with his inflammatory antics. His proclivity for provocation coupled with his distorted view of black America has grown more extreme over the years, earning him numerous appearances on Fox News. He has helped the network spread a slew of dangerous narratives that serve only to rouse the most extreme elements of the Tea Party.

It’s clear that Fox News and Sheriff Clarke have developed a symbiotic relationship. He needs the cable news network for its national platform; Fox needs a black sheriff to give voice to the dog-whistle narratives its anchors dare not vocalize themselves. Do you think Megyn Kelly could get away with making the claim that racial inequality is a thing of the past

or calling Attorney General Eric Holder a “race hustler?”

As easy as it is to be enraged

by Sheriff Clarke’s flagrant grandstanding, we should recognize that he isn’t the problem but only a symptom. In today’s conservative media landscape, the need to inflame will always

undermine the responsibility to inform, and reporting will always take a backseat to ratings. Both Fox News and Sheriff Clarke realize that one can bypass the complexities and nuances of sensitive topics by simply maintaining the us versus them approach used by right-wing media giant Ann Coulter.

Sheriff Clarke’s biting temperament was on full display as he vilified the federal government for intervening in local law enforcement issues and slammed the “liberal mainstream media” for their coverage of high-profile shootings.

He continued his ongoing absolution of America’s police from any and all wrongdoing and insisted that “black underclass subculture behavior” and hashtags like #BlackLivesMatter are the crux of the problem.

Unlike Sheriff Clarke, I refuse to dismiss this growing crisis.

Recently, I introduced an amendment to a federal spending bill that would increase funding for the Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act, enhancing training for police responding to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.

I’m not a fan of Sheriff Clarke or his politics, but I do believe he could provide a valuable voice to this national conversation.

The self-proclaimed “people’s sheriff” needs to drop the sideshow act and get serious.

Until then, I can only wonder if Sheriff Clarke is still a lawman or just a guy who plays one on TV. U.S. Congresswoman Gwen Moore represents Wisconsin’s 4th Congressional District and serves as ranking member on the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Monetary Policy and Trade. She was the first African American elected to Congress from the state of Wisconsin.

During a motivating visit to Ethiopia, world famous actor, producer, and singer Hugh Jackman met a young coffee farmer named Dukale. Inspired

by Dukale’s optimism and determination, Jackman opened the Laughing Man café, a small storefront offering Fair Trade Certified™ and responsiblysourced coffees. This June specialty coffee leader Keurig Green Mountain, announced the launch of Laughing Man® coffee for the Keurig® hot brewing system.

“We started Laughing Man to fulfill a promise I made to share the amazing story of an Ethiopian coffee farmer named Dukale,” said Jackman, who continues to be involved with the brand and is working closely on its development. “Six years later, it’s humbling to know, through this agreement, Dukale’s NewYorkTrendnyc 10

exceptional coffee, among other Laughing Man products, will be enjoyed through the convenience of the Keurig brewing system.”

Beginning June 4, 2015, Laughing Man® coffees became available exclusively on Keurig. com and are planned to expand to retail by the end of 2015.

GAY RIGHTS EXHIBITION ON VIEW AT THE NATIONAL CONSTITUTION CENTER, PHILADELPHIA The new exhibition at the National Constitution Center, Independence Mall, Philadelphia will continue through Labor Day, Monday, September 5th.

“Speaking Out for Equality” uses pivotal court cases, artifacts and personal stories to chronicle the decades long debate over gay rights, a debate that has ultimately brought issues of LGBT equality before the Supreme Court.

Planned to coincide with Gay Pride Month in June and the 50th anniversary of the first in a series gay rights marches, which took place on the Fourth of July on Independence Mall in Philadelphia, the William Way LGBT Community Center presents “Speaking Out for Equality: The Constitution, Gay Rights, and the Supreme Court.”

On July 4, 1965, LGBT activists picketed for justice in front of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall. “Dressed in suits and dresses to appear ‘normal,’ they carried posters that demanded equality for gays and lesbians in a society that treated them as criminals and deviants,” said Chris Bartlett, executive director, William Way LGBT Community Center.

The public demonstrations were called “Annual Reminder” protests and would last until 1969 were sparked by one person’s failed effort to bring a discrimination case before the Supreme Court. They would become the first sustained national effort to focus attention on the discrimination faced by gay people and became a catalyst for LGBT Americans to organize for equality.

“Speaking Out for Equality” will be the centerpiece of “Reminder 2015: Celebrating 50 Years of LGBT History, Art and Culture.”

A series of anniversary events planned under the leadership of the William Way LGBT Community Center and its Wilcox Archives and Library.

The William Way Center will also cohost programs at the African American Museum in

Philadelphia, the Free Library of Philadelphia, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Independence Visitor Center, and the National Museum of American Jewish History. A reenactment of the original Annual Reminder demonstration in front of Independence Hall will be held on July 4th.

“This exhibit is historic in many respects,” said Bartlett. “It is the first time that LGBT history, viewed through a Constitutional frame, is being explored at a national museum. It’s also historic given the time frame of the American LGBT civil rights debate: with a major LGBT civil rights case to be handed down by the United States Supreme Court while the exhibit is open this month”.
