erena Williams reigned supreme as she beat Lucie Safarova in three sets to win the French Open.

Williams, ranked No.1, took the first set 6-3, while Safarova battled back in the second, 7-6. But as many times before, particularly in this tournament, Williams’ pulled through and took the third set, 6-2.

OVERCOMING DIFFERENCES TO REMAIN BUSINESS PARTNERS AND FRIENDS

Good business partnerships can lead to great things, whether it’s Ben and Jerry dishing up ice cream or Penn and Teller dishing up magic.

But sometimes partners aren’t well matched. Their personalities fail to mesh, their differing visions lead to a clash of wills and what seemed like a good idea at the beginning disintegrates quickly in a flurry of angry words and ill will.

It doesn’t have to be that way, though.

A business partnership – like any relationship – can thrive if the right ingredients are in place.

“You can be friends and business partners at the same time,” says writer Gail Harris (www.gailharrisauthor. com), whose latest project involved a partnership that brought difficult, but not insurmountable, challenges.

What’s important is to be respectful as you work through disputes.

Whether it’s a disability or personality trait, everyone is different in some way, but those differences need not become obstacles when two people work together for a common goal.

“Our differences are minuscule compared with how we are alike,” Harris says. “Just look at the way Brandi and I came together to write this book.

Language was not a barrier. Different lifestyles were not a barrier. We became friends and worked together to produce something wonderful.”

GUEST COMMENTARY HIV CRIMINALIZATION LAWS ARE JUDGMENTAL—NOT JUSTICE

The AHF Black AIDS Crisis Taskforce (ABACT) recently issued the following statement on a Missouri jury convicting 23-year-old HIV-positive college wrestler Michael L. Johnson on felony charges that he knowingly exposed four male sexual partners to the virus and infected a fifth man with HIV. The mostly white St.Charles jury convicted Johnson on 5 of 6 counts against him and recommended that he serve more than 60 years in prison at his sentencing scheduled for July 23. According to the St. Charles County prosecutor’s office, a judge will conduct a sentencing assessment report and decide whether to accept, reject, or modify the jury’s sentence.

It’s utterly sad and shocking that, in 2015, a person living with HIV can be sentenced to spend decades in prison due to laws criminalizing HIV—especially considering that these laws were passed in a fear-driven environment when little was understood about preventing and treating the disease. While we fully support the notion that a person should disclose his/her HIV status before engaging in sexual contact, we also recognize the role that stigma and discrimination plays in a person’s decision to withhold or even lie

about this information. Yet in the 32 states that have HIV-specific criminal statutes on their books — most of which carry felony charges — what’s being meted out for people living with HIV is unfair judgment, not justice.

Much like the lengthy and discriminatory mandatory minimum drug sentences that ruined thousands of lives in our nation and are now, thankfully, being overturned, so must we also challenge state laws that criminalize HIV. As yet another person faces spending the rest of his life behind bars due to these statutes, we’re even more determined to work to overturn

these harmful laws that are based in ignorance and fear.

JOSHUA2’s TRIBUTE TO BLUES GREAT B.B. KING

To celebrate the spirit of B.B. King, blues artist Joshua2 will feature a tribute to the blues great at his Blues Project: Pentecostal Blues Concert at New York City’s My Image Studios Harlem (MIST Harlem) located at 46 West 116th Street on Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20.

“When I think of B.B. King, I think about my father. Their playing styles were very similar,” says Joshua2 , who was raised in Cool Springs, Delaware and grew up in the Pentecostal church. “The difference was that my father wouldn’t leave the church to give his talent to the world. B.B. King however saw his gift as something to be given back to the world. If he could ease the soul of someone through his music, then he did just that whether in church or in the world.”

Taormina designed the restaurant’s interior to have a modern farmhouse feeling combined with an industrial chic aesthetic. The space is comfortable and spacious, with plush red booths, zinc-topped tables and big open windows.

Starters include Sicilian meatballs made with grassfed beef, pistachios, raisins, pecorino and white wine and perfectly crisped artichokes with lemon, parsley and

housemade aioli. Salads are prepared with a continuously changing selection of seasonal greens from Lancaster County.

The Nicoise salad is prepared with pan-seared tuna, haricot vert, tomatoes and house-made potato chips.

Signature pastas include the 19th-century inspired Maccheroni Dome—a shaped, pasta casserole filled with meatballs, creamy tomato sauce and ham, and handmade Pappardelle with locally sourced Italian sausage and caramelized fennel.
