MICHELLE OBAMA SPEAKS ABOUT CHILDHOOD OBESITY EPIDEMIC AT MAYOR’S CONFERENCE

Mayor Elaine Walker of Bowling Green, Kentucky has launched a website to encourage residents to exercise, helping them find parks and trail maps and information on upcoming bike rides, and walks and runs.

First Lady Michelle Obama delivered remarks to the mayors on Thursday, January 21st at the top of the Plenary Session. The First Lady’s remarks focused on the health of the American people and the benefits of city leaders participating in a healthier diet for adults and children campaign.

Mayor Rybak of Minneapolis brought in farmers markets to provide access to fresh produce in underserved areas.

The remarks by First Lady Obama revealed that one of her first jobs was working for Mayor Daley out in Chicago, she saw firsthand the kind of challenges mayor’s face. Whether it’s handling a crisis in one of your schools, or dealing with cost overruns in paving streets, or planning for that upcoming snowstorm, you have to be prepared for anything and everything. She continued, “And it’s not like you catch a break when you leave the office. Whether it’s at church, or the grocery store, or the Friday night football game, I know that people don’t hesitate to come up and tell you about the problems they’re having, or what they think you could be doing better. And they never hold back.” You’re the first to see the impacts of a struggling economy in the lines at your unemployment offices. You’re the first to know that crime rates are rising when you get those arrest reports from your police force. You’re the first to get a sense of job losses when CEOs tell you that they’ve decided to locate their operations overseas rather than in your hometown. Over the past year, according to the First Lady, ‘nearly one - third of children in America are overweight or obese. And one third of all children today will eventually suffer from diabetes – in the African American and Latino communities, it goes up to almost half. So it’s not surprising that a study published this month found that obesity could be an even greater threat to America’s health than smoking. In fact, medical experts are predicting that this generation is on track to have a shorter lifespan than their parents.’ Research reports that, ‘obesity is also one of the biggest threats to the American economy.’ If we continue on our current path, in ten years, nearly 50 percent of all Americans will be obese – not just overweight, but obese.’ This epidemic could result in spending on health care to treat obesity-related conditions like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Mayor Curtatone of Somerville, Massachusetts created a partnership with local restaurants as part of a citywide strategy to fight obesity, promoting restaurants that have agreed to offer lowfat menu options and smaller portions. And he and his staff view every decision they make, every project they manage, as an opportunity to take action for the health of Somerville’s citizens.

“ …obesity is also one of the biggest threats to the American economy. If we continue on our current path, in ten years, nearly 50 percent of all Americans will be obese – not just overweight, but obese.’ This epidemic could result in spending on health care to treat obesity-related conditions like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.” “Kids in our schools are struggling – sitting on the sidelines, unable to keep up with their classmates, visiting the school nurse with weight-related health problems. You see it in clinics, emergency rooms, and in waiting rooms, overflowing with folks suffering from preventable obesityrelated problems from asthma to high blood pressure to diabetes. One mayor told us that obesity can even impact economic development and job creation because CEOs and entrepreneurs worried about high employee health care costs are sometimes reluctant to set up shop in areas with high obesity rates.” None of us wants this kind of future for our kids or for our country. And I know a lot of parents out there are worried right now. They desperately want to make responsible, healthy decisions for their kids. But too often, the realities of modern life make it feel like the deck is stacked against them. “Ultimately,” according to Mrs.Obama, “it’s going to take all of us – businesses and non-profits; community centers and health centers; teachers and faith leaders; coaches and parents; and particularly all of you, our

nation’s mayors – all working together to help families make commonsense changes so our kids can get, and stay, healthy. “Ultimately, folks know that leadership is about having the foresight – and the courage – to make those sacrifices and investments in the short run that pay big dividends – often paying for themselves many times over – in the long run. And that is precisely what happens when we undertake smart, strategic efforts to help our kids lead active, healthy lives right from the beginning.” “The First Lady highlighted the efforts of individual mayor’s who have made the improvement of health for their cities a priority.” Mayor Robert Cluck of Arlington, Texas – who’s also a doctor, by the way – has been working to get kids more physically active, giving out pedometers at the end of the school year so they can track their steps over summer vacation. It’s why Mayor Darwin Hindman of Columbia, Missouri is building a system of walkways and bikeways in his city that will connect businesses and shopping centers to schools, parks, and neighborhoods.

Mayor Mick Cornett challenged the people of Oklahoma City to lose a million pounds, and he created a website – thiscityisgoingonadiet.com – where people can learn how to lose weight and track their weight loss, and can share personal stories and tips with others. So far, 40,000 people have signed up – and together, they’ve lost more than half a million pounds.” The First Lady closed her remarks to the mayoral conference by saying she is, “pleased that the CDC is now offering grants to local health departments to fund more initiatives like this all across America. We’ll be announcing the recipients next month, and I hope that many of you have applied. And I want to recognize the U.S. Conference of Mayors for your leadership in supporting these efforts as well, including publishing an excellent guide for mayors on how to fight childhood obesity in their cities and towns.” Another highlight of the conference was National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial’s participation in a panel discussion on Reducing Violence and Strengthening Policy/Community Trust at the U.S. Conference of Mayors Opening Plenary Session which was held on Wednesday, January 20 in the Presidential Ballroom of the Capital Hilton Hotel. The session included Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, USCM President and Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, USCM Vice President New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, and St. Louis Police Chief Colonel Dotson.

The presentation will take place during the 47th NAACP Image Awards, broadcast live on Friday, February 5 (9:00 p.m. ET/PT tape-delayed) on TV One, the civil rights organization announced today.

“It is a rare privilege for me to present the NAACP Chairman’s 2016 Award to an outstanding group of trailblazing leaders all under the age of 50 who have given voice and vision to the mantra that black lives matter,” stated Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors. “The five individuals and three organizations have raised awareness of social, educational, and economic injustice from college campuses, church pulpits and the streets, and exemplify what this award symbolizes “Courage Will Not Skip this Generation®.” The NAACP Chairman’s Award is bestowed in recognition of special achievement and distinguished public service. Holder, Jr., United States Navy Vice Admiral Michelle Howard, Radio One Founder and Chairperson Cathy Hughes, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, Tyler Perry, Former Vice President Al Gore and Dr. Wangari Muta Maathai, Aretha Franklin, Bono, then-Senator Barack Obama, The Dave Matthews Band, Danny Glover, and Forest Whitaker.

Time magazine has identified Jamal Harrison Bryant as one of the key figures of this hour to move the generation forward. His training and tutelage emanated from his time serving as National Youth and College Director of the NAACP where he organized a national “Stop The Violence Start the Love” campaign to counter the violence that claimed the lives of thousands of young African Americans.

47th NAACP CHAIRMAN AWARD HONOREES: Justice League NYC is a rapid-response criminal justice task force launched by The Gathering for Justice, a non-profit organization founded by iconic actor and activist Harry Belafonte in 2005. The Justice League NYC has established itself as a leader in the Movement for Racial Equity, utilizing the talents and resources of its members to advocate for viable reforms to the criminal justice system. The University of Mississippi NAACP College Chapter is an organization committed to ensuring the educational, political, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination. The College Chapter’s leadership was a key catalyst in the student led campaign to remove the Mississippi state flag, which includes the confederate battle emblem in its upper left corner from campus grounds. Its entire executive board was responsible for the planning and execution of all dialogues, rallies, and meetings with University administrators. Concerned Students 1950 Collective at the University of Missouri, Columbia stood up to institutional apathy and racial hostility on the campus. The Collective organized a series of “Racism Lives Here” protest rallies that included a hunger strike by a graduate

student and a pivotal boycott by its football team the Missouri Tigers that resulted in the resignations of the University of Missouri System President and the Chancellor. Brittany “Bree” Newsome has always been sensitive to the essential role that art and symbols play in shaping culture and consciousness. As she watched the funeral of Rev. Clementa Pinckney, one of 9 people slaughtered in the name of white supremacy at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, she recognized the message being communicated clearly by the US flag and the SC state flag at half-mast while the Confederate flag remained fully furled. Refusing to accept the premise of this image – that white supremacy is supreme, untouchable and invincible – she scaled the 30-foot flagpole in front of the South Carolina Statehouse and removed the “stars and bars” boldly declaring, “This flag comes down today!” The image of Bree with the Confederate flag in hand has become a touchstone of empowerment for disenfranchised people around the globe. Jussie Smollett, Widely recognized as Empire’s Jamal Lyon, actor-singer-songwriter Jussie Smollett is a longtime activist who has actively stood up for civil rights, HIV/AIDS awareness and more social justice causes since age 15.

COMMENTARY STACEY DASH WILL BE RECREATING THE ROLE OF ‘PRISSY’

Dr. Teresa Taylor Williams, Owner & Publisher

Ms. Dash would probably go but not without a pocketful of bread crumbs to drop along the way so ‘Massa’ could trace the escape route.

Can we say one more thing about actress Stacey Dash? Sure we can. We can keep talking and talking about Ms. Dash for days, weeks and months to come. But, what might surprise you about the ill-informed, easily manipulated, pawn of FOX News, is she has caused an uproar from us likened to no one in recent days. Her ability to appear to have lost all use of the frontal lobe of her brain, that she has loss of memory is genius. She is close to losing the ability to speak coherently, espousing half-truths and confusing dialogue has one wondering if she is speaking in tongues? “Stacey Dash is benefitting off of a desperation found only in those stuck in a past the nation has left behind. It is Dash’s only way to stand out for not being smart or qualified enough to stand out on her own,” says Justin Williams, political analyst. The confused former “Clueless,” star is living her character. The proof came last week when she was interviewed on her own ‘home’ station, FOX News. Dash actually made her colleague stutter in disbelief. What caused her colleague’s case of whiplash and shock were the words that were coming out of Ms. Dash’s mouth. ‘We should get rid of BET and Black History Month!’ What???? To this I respond, genius. Stacey Dash is a genius. Not in the educated, well-read, eloquently spoken definition of the word. Dash is playing the role of a manipulative, beautiful, sexy, engaging television character. She is doing what she

“ …….‘I don’t know nothin’ bout birthin’ no babies,’ could once again come out of the mouth of Stacey Dash.” knows well – to act. Ms. Dash acts like she knows what she is talking about, while smiling her doe-eyed smile and mugging for the camera. Put a male interviewer in front of her and he cannot see behind her alluring ‘Clueless’ character. Stacey Dash’s demeanor and verbiage could easily earn her a role in the remake of ‘Gone With The Wind.’ Ms. Dash would cast perfectly in the role of Prissy, whose words became the trademark of the epic film. Actress Butterfly McQueen played Prissy, her innocent, doe-eyed, clueless line; ‘I don’t know nothin’ bout birthin’ no babies,’ could once again come out of the mouth of Stacey Dash. I can easily see Ms. Dash in red bandana and apron portraying this confused and dimwitted character as she does each time she takes a seat on FOX News. Like Prissy,

It’s sad that Ms. Dash does not realize that when she can no longer play the role of Prissy at Fox News, she will be thrown out of the big house and back into the fields with those she has forsaken. And although we are a forgiving people, unlike Ms. Dash, we are not suffering from frontal lobe dysfunction, so we are not forgetful people. We will remember her disrespectful words and arrogant, ignorant commentaries that insults our history and minimizes our struggle.

Ms. Dash has convinced an equally calculating FOX News executive that she speaks for her community, that she is the voice of the defiant, conservative people of color. Just like Prissy, who convinced her ‘Massa’ that she knew nothing on how to birth babies? In reality, Ms. Dash doesn’t speak for any intelligent person, no matter their opinion because no one with intelligence would choose her as their spokesperson. So, should we send in a rescue team? Should we try to get her to agree to go to a boot camp for the ignorant? Maybe a detox program for those who just spew crap? This poor woman needs our help in a pathetic way to help her runaway from the plantation. If only the Underground Railroad was here today to get her clueless soul to the Promised Land. The sad thing is

HEALTH

NONPROFIT CALLS ON NYC COUNCIL TO INCREASE FUNDS TO DOULA PROGRAM In the wake of a study released earlier this month on the benefits of doula care in bringing down health care costs, the Northern Manhattan Perinatal Partnership (NMPP)—a Harlem-based nonprofit offering comprehensive health and social services to families—has renewed its commitment to bring doula care to New York City women. “Women, especially those made vulnerable by social, racial and economic conditions, can find life or death support in the company of a doula. This one individual can be the difference between isolation and care for women who face barriers in advocating for their own right to quality respectful care,” said NMPP Interim Executive Director Ashanti Chimurenga. “The New York City Council has rightfully invested in the expansion of doula care but must find the political good will to increase these supports until members of the Council are assured that every woman in New York City who needs a doula can have one and that women’s health is a priority.” Doulas are laypeople trained to assist a woman through the childbirth process and beyond. Birth doulas provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to mothers and their partners before, during and immediately after childbirth. Postpartum 10 NewYorkTrendnyc

doulas help mothers with the transition into parenthood. They offer education and support around self-care for mom and infant care, breast-feeding assistance and help around the house after the baby arrives. NMPP is providing free birth and postpartum doulas to the women of New York City through its HWHF partners in each of the five boroughs. The agency further works to reduce health disparities through its six major programs providing services to area families to reduce infant and maternal mortality, connect clients to social services and increase health of area of area residents. NMPP is constantly seeking community women to attend their free three - and four - day DONA International (formerly Doulas of North America) trainings, valued at more than $500. Trainees are then supported through the certification process; once they fulfill program requirements, NMPP can hire them to work as consultants providing doula care to clients. Doulas in the program earn $450 per birth and $25 per hour for providing postpartum care. For more information, email hwhfnyc@gmail.com or call 212-665-2600.

In every community across the country, the Affordable Care Act is helping to make affordable, quality health care a reality for millions of people. This is especially true of the African-American Community. Since the law took effect, we have seen a historic reduction in the uninsured – 17.6 million have found insurance – the largest reduction in four decades. 2.6 million African-Americans who were uninsured now have coverage. This Open Enrollment at HHS, we’re continuing to work with national organizations that have been in the trenches with us for the past 3 years. Organizations like the NAACP are holding enrollment events in states across the country with high uninsured rates. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s National President, Dr. Paulette C. Walker recorded a public service announcement encouraging their members to enroll and held a “Delta Day of Action” with their chapters in Dallas, TX. National Urban League, Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network are working with us to make sure both their members and people in the community know where and how to get covered.

February 4, 2016 - February 10, 2016

Last month, Secretary Burwell stopped by Headlines Barbershop in Charlotte, NC with Mayor Roberts and radio personality Larry Mims, where owners Derek and Season Bennett frequently have enrollment assisters on hand to help those in the community sign up. While talking to barbers and customers about the importance of getting covered, Secretary Burwell met Manuel Jones, a selfemployed truck driver who signed up last year. Across the country, local communities are taking important steps to provide their neighbors and friends with information and tools to improve their health. Here at HHS, we’re proud to be a part of those efforts.
