NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE DEMANDS U.N. HALT ILLEGAL USE OF LOGO

The National Urban League has asked United Nations SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon to intervene in the U.N.’s ongoing illegal and unauthorized use of the National Urban League’s trademarked logo.

National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial said he was “absolutely surprised to learn that the United Nations began utilizing our logo without checking registrations in the United States patent or trademark office and then willfully refusing, despite voluntary requests to comply with our suggestion, to discontinue the use of our logo.”

Morial also has asked U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power for their assistance in protecting the trademark.The National Urban League has used the equal sign logo, since 1968 and obtained a federal registration for the logo in 1992.

The civil rights and social justice organization in December requested that the U.N. stop using the logo for its campaign for a sustainable development campaign.

In a letter to the U.N.’s Office of Legal Counsel, the National Urban League wrote, “While

we appreciate and commend your efforts, we believe that the use of NUL’s Mark in connection with your activities may cause confusion, cause mistake or deceive the consuming public as to the source, sponsorship, association or affiliation of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development Campaign and serve to dilute the value of NUL’s Mark in violation of our rights under the Lanham Act.” The Lanham Act, also known as the Trademark Act of 1946, is the federal statute that governs trademarks, service marks, and unfair competition.

As the U.N. has not complied, Morial has reached out to the Secretary-General. “As a historic civil rights organization that serves those of economic and social disadvantage in this country with a focus on African Americans, our organization is well-known and our logo is well-socialized in this nation,” Morial wrote, “I am respectfully requesting your immediate intervention into this matter to avoid an embarrassment to the United Nations as well as to avoid the possibility of contentious and expensive litigation by the National Urban League against the United Nations.”

GUEST COMMENTARY ANITA HILL SPEAKS ON EQUALITY AT

NASSAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE

By Don Durant At Nassau Community College, more than 600 were in attendance for the speech and presentation of Professor Anita Hill on Sexual Harassment. The audience consisted of staff, students and visitors, all curious to see and hear. Anita Hill appeared in the auditorium on International Women’s Day, and motivated so many in attendance. She was in the in the early 90’s, what Rosa Parks was to the early 60’s.

She was tired of being sexually harassed by her supervisor, just as Rosa was tired of being forced to the back of the bus. Clarence Thomas, was to be appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Although race, and gender were the comparison between Rosa and Anita, all in attendance shared at least one or the other.

“Re-imagining Equality” is the subject of her speech, and her book. This was the dream at the very beginning of the Civil Rights struggle. What would our society be like if sexual harassment were eliminated from our society? Eighty

percent of the group in attendance were students, and in 1991 the Clarence Thomas testimony allowed her to speak on her workplace experience; constantly approached by Thomas, for dating, pornography, and his personal sexual experiences.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, summoned her to determine if Thomas was fit to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. This major determinant was that if he did not respect the law, then how could he judge right and wrong in the laws. This was 24 years ago, and she testified regarding the integrity of the Supreme Court, and that Clarence Thomas would impact the court’s integrity.

Today – reimagining equality, what would it have been like if they had taken the positive choice, and not a political choice? Countries across the world would be enlightened on what should be done. They would have informed businesses, and students in fair practices, and spare much agony by simple leadership; instead of political games with our lives. Training of faculty on

college campuses have gone far in minimizing the damage to students on these venues. Standard of Proof in a civil rights or civil case is not innocent until proven guilty; as is the platform in Criminal law.

Clarence Thomas had no automatic right to sit on the Supreme Court – it is a privilege, and can be taken away based on violation, and charges. Sexual Assault – How many can we tolerate? The victims, how can we not stand by them?

Sexual abuse as part of our culture is not something we need to accept. The Senate as a rebuttal, brought in many employees, who had not been sexually assaulted

by Clarence Thomas; but failed to call witnesses who could attest to the same types of assaults and harassment. What value do we place on sexual harassment as compared to a criminal offense?

In the selection of a Justice for the Supreme Court, how much do we really value these laws? The Senate refused to invite experts to speak on the issue of Sexual Harassment.

A professor at Baylor University and an officer at the Virginia Military Academy, were charged with sexual harassment. And so many other cases, many of which were simply brushed aside in order to protect the institution. In the Clarence Thomas hearing, race was prevalent in that hearing because, Thomas a Black man was replacing Thurgood Marshall another Black man. His appointment would eliminate the attention paid to sitins, Rosa Parks, and other current racial incidents.

Racism is still prominent and ingrained in our structure, voting rights discrimination, the new version, racial disparity in housing, healthcare, jobs and wages.

Attempts to avoid racial viewing

are futile, De-Raced – TransRaced as an African American woman, Anita Hills testimony was considered only based on her race.

Clarence Thomas in his testimony spoke about a hi-tech lynching, by simply holding the hearing, and the committee understood his objections. Would the late Strom Thurmond, a Senator on the Committee, have embraced Clarence Thomas, if Anita Hill had been a blond, blue eyed white woman? We need a vision on what we would like this scenario to be like. Life goes on, but it doesn’t have to be the same. We must learn from our experiences and our past.

We must imagine a world that didn’t exist – Sexual Harassment on campus doesn’t exist. If we can’t imagine it, then it is impossible.

One small step we need to talk to our daughters as well as our sons about Sexual Harassment.

UNIVERSITY TO OFFER HIP-HOP STUDIES hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa – it is the first and oldest hip-hop awareness organization. Since 2008, he has taught hip-hop visual culture at Bowie State, the university’s only hip-hop-based course.

Bowie State University will break ground in offering a new academic minor program in hip-hop studies and visual culture – the first such program in Maryland and possibly only the second in the nation. The new minor will be available in the fall 2016 semester.

The oldest historically black university in Maryland, Bowie State joins a movement of some the nation’s top colleges and universities that offer hiphop studies courses and programs. The program’s curriculum will draw on the arts, technology, media, history, and literature to expand opportunities for critical discussion, collaborative research and creative projects. Students will engage with hip-hop scholars, artists and pioneers through guest lectures, hands-on workshops and field trips.

“We are trying to encourage critical research. Hip-hop is not just music: it’s a culture,” said Associate Professor Tewodross Melchishua, coordinator of Bowie State’s visual communication and digital media arts (VCDMA) program. An award-winning filmmaker, animator and visual artist, Melchishua is a member of the Universal Zulu Nation, founded by

Three new courses developed by Bowie State faculty will explore hip-hop’s roots in African and African-American culture and its societal impact, while developing projects that span multiple academic disciplines. Melchishua designed a hip-hop studio course focused on visual arts design. Renowned hip-hop scholar, musician and author Dr. William Smith created a course exploring black contemporary music and its impact on society. Helen Hayes Award-nominated playwright, director and actor Greg Morrison will teach a hip-hop theater course he developed to introduce students a unique form of musical theater.

Amber Matthews, a senior majoring in VCDMA, researched educators who integrate hip-hop music and culture into their lessons. “By understanding hip-hop and the possibilities of incorporating it into education for the youth inside and outside the classroom, the potential to create positive change is boundless,” she said.

Melchishua says that a student in any discipline could benefit from studying hip-hop culture. “Hip-hop studies can complement any existing area of study from education to marketing to technology or cultural studies,” he said. “Hip hop is universal – it brings together a lot of diverse people from around the world.”

NEWS HEALTH CENTER LEADER INDUCTED INTO GRASSROOTS HALL OF FAME Annie Neasman, President and CEO of Jessie Trice Community Health Center Inc., in Miami Dade, FL, has been inducted into the Grassroots Hall of Fame for the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC). Grassroots Hall of Fame members have made lasting contributions to insuring the creation, survival and strength of Community Health Centers and the Health Center Movement through their dedicated and tireless efforts over many years.

Ms. Neasman was presented the Hall of Fame Award at the 2016 NACHC Policy and Issues Forum in Washington, D.C., an event attended by more than 2,000 health center leaders from around the country.

Thus it was with pomp and great pride that the WLC choose to honor four extraordinary women who personify this creed at the 10th anniversary of the “Power of Women To Make a Difference Luncheon” held at the elegant Cipriani 42nd St. It was befitting that Sheena Wright, President and CEO of United Way NYC, an exemplar of resilience and selflessness should offer the toast to the room of ardent supporters.
