The 2025 edition of the William Hovey Memorial Giant Slalom Race took place on Sunday January, 12th on Draper’s Drop at Whiteface Mountain, with sunny skies and moderate temperatures. Racing began at 9:30am for the field of 228 total athletes representing U10s, U12s, and U14s from across New York State. The conditions proved to be excellent and course sets utilized the terrain on the hill creating a fair race for all competitors.
Racers were tested to put two consistent runs together, and the athletes who combined tactical precision with the right amount of risk and speed were rewarded. In the boys U10 division, West Mountain Racing’s William Shuket earned the victory in a combined time of 2:04 0 In the girls U10 category, NYSEF-Whiteface’s Kaylee Gaudette recorded the win with a solid combined time of 1:58.6.
In the boys U12 category, the top spot was captured by Westin Paul from Holiday Valley with a time of 1:44.20. On the girls U12 side, NYSEFWhiteface’s Ava Reynolds took the top spot with a time of 1:46.6 edging out racers from West, and Windham who rounded out the top five for the U12 girls
For the U14’s, the Hovey winner is recognized with a name on a plaque with some of NYSEF’s and NYSSRA’s most accomplished alumni, representing Olympians, USST alumni, and many NCAA Division I ski racers This year ’ s winner on the girls side, Cecilia Norfolk, joined her brothers Rowen and Lincoln as a Hovey winner. Skiing for West Mountain, Norfolk notched a combined time of 1:45 8 edging out Madison O’Brien, second, of Oak Mountain and NYSEF-Whiteface athletes Evelyn Palma, third, and Lucy Orringer, fourth, with Melanie Matusinsky rounding out the top 5 finishers for the U14 girls.
On the boys side, NYSEF-Whiteface’s Jace Bush secured his name on the Hovey Plaque with a combined time of 1:42.2. Bush entered the second run with a tenth of a second lead over Holiday Valley’s Robert Marshall and secured the win with an impressive second run, besting the field by a second The top 5 included West Mountain’s Derrick Crivelli in third, and Charlie Fuller in fourth, with NYSEF-Whiteface’s Henri Meunier rounding out the top five, finishing fifth.

The NYSEF Winter Term Program provides an opportunity for athletes to remain in their home school district during the fall and spring, while continuing their academics and ski training full time in Wilmington or Lake Placid during the winter season.
Founded in 2013, Winter Term has grown and changed into a thriving athletic and academic program, allowing student athletes to continue intense training while maintaining the standard of academics required to remain in good standing at their home school district. The program originally started as a tutoring program that assists students in completing assignments sent by their schools. This options still exists, but many students choose to withdraw from school and complete the NYSEF curriculum.
Each student’s academic needs are considered in developing curriculum while the lessons are tailored to the sending school’s specifications. Our curriculum is aligned with the NYS Next Generation Standards allowing the students to smoothly transition back to school and succeed in the NYS Regents exams The advantage to the approach of withdrawing from school allows us to design the academics with their individual training and racing schedule in mind. The athletes can move ahead on assignments when travel is light, and back off when race mentality is in high gear
The demand of navigating the academics and the athletic schedule fosters a sense of ownership and develops independent learners that ultimately transcends into the future endeavors of our athletes. Many alumni have returned to us to share how the program provided a wonderful platform for college preparation.
This program is also unique in that athletes who participate in other competitive sports outside the ski season at home, such as softball, lacrosse, football, soccer and tennis to compete in State and regional championships. Later on, alumni have moved on to continue skiing at NCAA and USCSA college teams and other collegiate sports such as lacrosse and football
Winter Term has had many homes over the past twelve years, including the Lake Placid Training Center, The Lake Placid Crowne Plaza, and the High Peaks Cyclery Base Camp Last year, Winter Term had the opportunity to move to The Inn at Whiteface. Nestled into the base of Whiteface Mountain, the Inn provides a space that is exclusive to NYSEF and includes housing, a commercial kitchen, and space for study halls and free time/recreation - all within walking distance of our home alpine training venue!
Winter Term is now into its second winter at The Inn. “Academics are in full force as most students are ending the second quarter of schooling ” said WT Associate Director Olivia Transue. “Many have been working on midterms, labs, ceramic & watercolor projects, and various other assignments; both within NYSEF’s homeschooling program and remotely from athlete’s sending schools. Everyone is full steam ahead as we lean into the thick of the 2025 winter season ”

In sports, we hear about the often romanticized notion of “the comeback” or “winning the second battle” The truth is sometimes those athletes who complete the comeback were always in the position to be successful but the extra narration of an already hyped storyline got the better of reality Think Michael Jordan’s flu game; Although they were down most of the game the Chicago Bulls were positioned well to wrap up the 1997 NBA finals anyway. Or take our own sport, there was a famous moment in the 2003 World Championships in the men ' s 4x10 km relay; The Norwegians were minutes behind the Swedes starting the final leg, and they came back inexplicably to win the race. There was an explanation if you watched the race closely however. Ski fans forget that the Swedish anchor leg skier Jörgen Brink actually “bonked” 1 km from the finish, in other words he essentially blacked out from a hypoglycemic condition Norway was also favored slightly in that race. In the years following this incident Jörgen ended up being a multiple time winner of the most competitive long distance ski race in the world, the 90 kilometer Swedish Vasaloppet He clearly must have figured out how to avoid low blood sugar
Anyway, what impresses me the most about coming back successfully on the second try in athletics is not how bad the first attempt was or how good the competition might have been, it is how much raw motivation is needed to make it happen. The athlete could simply crumble in defeat, or mail it in on the next try after a down performance and nobody would notice. As a coach in an individual sport you have to pay close attention and catch this.
As a team we had at least three comeback instances in the past month. The first was Max Fey at the Craftsbury, Vermont Eastern Cup in late December. We had a sprint on the first day, Max qualified in one of the top positions for U16’s and cruised through his heats to the final In the final, Max tangled with another racer, and crashed. The two were gunnin’ for the same track, and racing aggressively for position as you should in that situation. Max came across the finish line off the back in defeated agony showing his mental wounds in more ways than one another great learning lesson for the day. Max came back impressively the second day with extra motivation to try and take the win. He ended up on the podium, seconds from the victory.
We had Daven Linck ‘comeback’ on the same day at the sprint in Lake Placid Eastern Cup, after bad feelings in the qualifier that morning he bounced back quickly, kept moving through each of his heats patiently to make the U18/20 Final Another great example of a bounce back day was Jenna Stainken at the Empire State Games On the first mass start day, the race did not go well for her with feelings of stiffness and tiredness culminating in two tough crashes; Those frustrating ones where pole straps come off and the wind is gone from the sails With the second day’s seeding based on the first day Jenna started the race very quickly with a high tempo, clearly extra motivated from the day before and ended up with a positive result. This same day we also had U16 Liam Stoddard take the win in his race a couple seconds ahead of a rival skier who had been ahead of him all season
For the Junior Race Team, it is the year of the bounce back race. The question in the future will be how to best use this motivation an athlete gets after a down performance For right now, we are set up really well to succeed in the late season with a lighter race schedule coming up, more daylight for some longer training sessions, and excellent skiing with good trail conditions to be had in the region. A chance to put just a little more hay in the barn Looking forward to a strong finish from this group!

It’s hard to believe our season has crossed the half way mark. Across our alpine venues and in our developmental philosophy, NYSEF U10s and U12s compete internally at each club to not only get experience racing but also learn fundamental skills about how to approach race day. It also allows athletes to build on the skills they are learning free skiing and in structured training environments.
As each event approaches athletes need to develop their routines for race day from warm up to inspection to being fully prepared at the start. With each event athletes have the opportunity to test what they are learning As part of the process coaches meet with groups following race day to talk about line, tactics, inspection, and how they could improve next time.
Each of these events allows athletes to get race experience in a low stakes environment where we intentionally try and keep the focus on fun and kids’ desire to compete.

One of the most important aspects of introducing young skiers to speed events is creating a terrain. Whether it’s rollers on Dot Nebel at Bellearye, grooming on Upper Thruway at Whiteface, or building jumps at Gore, NYSEF coaches are intricately involved in shaping the right terrain for our athletes In prep for Gore’s most recent Flight Camp, John Morgan was on the hill with the Gore grooming team the night before to oversee the jump build.
NYSEF Head U12 Coach Lily Gaechter reported on Morgan and the groomer ’ s work: “The next morning we went out to set as if it was Christmas morning; not sure what we’d get but we we ’ re excited. Course setters Ben Davenport and Sean Donohue were stoked with the jump, it was perfect with a great landing ” She continued: “creating features within speed courses for our youngest athletes is vital to build and develop their confidence as they advance in age groups. ”

On Sunday January 26th, members of NYSEF’s Junior Race Team, DEVO race team, and Skimiesters along with some NYSEF parents joined with other kids and families from the community for the Lake Placid Outing Club’s annual Jackrabbit Ski and Pool Party!
Participants had the option of starting from three different points along the Jackrabbit Trail based on their ability; the longest starting their journey at Cascade Welcome Center, and the shortest beginning at River Road. The adventure culminated with a pizza party and swimming at the Crowne Plaza Resort on Main Street in Lake Placid, with all participants having an EPIC day!
Thank you to the LPOC for organizing this amazing event, to the Crowne Plaza for donating their pool space, and to BETA for amazing trails! To learn more about the Jackrabbit trail. click HERE.

Each of our alpine venues has a distinct history, early maps from the Gore Mountain ski club date to 1936 Whiteface, in fact is the youngest of the three alpine venues. This year, Belleayre marked its 75th year. The ski area at Belleayre officially opened in 1949 after legislation was passed for the development to take place in 1947. The original layout for the mountain was designed by Art Draper, who would later work closely with New York Governor Averell Harriman to push the State legislature to grant $2.5 million to build trails and lifts at Whiteface.
A lot of firsts can be traced to Belleayre, including the construction of the first chair lift in New York State, a Roebling single lift. During the 1950s Belleayre expanded by 12 trails and 3 lifts, this success led Governor Harriman to call on Art Draper to lead the efforts to establish a new ski area at Whiteface, which would have a lift and trails to meet the requirements to host another Olympic Games in Lake Placid.
Historically, Belleayre, also owned by the State of New York, was managed by the Department of Environmental Conservation. In 2012, the mountain was shifted to operate under the Olympic Regional Development Authority, and joined Gore and Whiteface under the direction of ORDA This move has led to a fleury of additions including the Catskill region’s only gondola. It also brought the merger of NYSEF with the Belleayre Mountain Racing Association. This development brought a new chapter to the rich history between the two mountains Former NYSEF Board Chair, Art Lussi, honored his grandfather Art Draper’s vision and legacy during the event and many others recognized Dot Nebel’s legacy.
NYSEF board member Annella Dignes and many others came together to honor the legacy and history of Belleayre with a wonderful gala on January 11th. NYSEF alum, emeritus and current board members attended the event and were treated to a great evening of history Special thanks to NYSEF Belleayre’s Program Director JJ Pavese for being so supportive of this event.
