Hello NYSEF Friends & Family,
What a year! In the middle of the season April always feels like an eternity away, but once it is here, it always feels hard to believe how quickly it came. Things are quiet in the NYSEF building and at the mountain with one last weekend of skiing Easter weekend. We’ve been busy recapping the season and completing end of season meetings and looking ahead to next year. As always, the support of the community impresses me and your trust in us keeps us humble.
We closed the year with some exceptional results and a number of athletes competing at the national level for their age and discipline. Throughout the program athletes found success and pushed themselves every day to be a little bit better and to focus a little bit more. This determination paid off and there are few more important takeaways from ski racing than persistence in pursuit of a goal. This final in-season newsletter highlights some of that. At the end of the day we ’ re proud of all our athletes and their commitment to the sport
We’ll be heading west for the annual USSS Congress in May and in the meantime we’ll share some details about our annual golf tournament in June, and we look forward to seeing you all in between.
See you soon,
John Norton, Executive Director

The United States Biathlon Association held its annual National Championship event in Bozeman, Montana March 27th through March 29th NYSEF was represented by two of our senior athletes, Abigail Van Dorn and Jenna Stainken who travelled with Head Coach Maddie Phaneuf to compete against 170 athletes from across the United States and Canada at the Crosscut Mountain Sports Center.
Phaneuf shared: “Abi had some standout performances, landing on the podium each day Jenna persevered through some challenging shooting at the high altitude to finish up her season strong!” It was a great end to the season for these girls and with exciting news for next season there is momentum in the biathlon program at NYSEF

"I really loved my time in Bozeman. I was able to experience not only a great venue with high class competition, but the wonderful community of biathlon. It was a great way to close off not only my season, but potentially my time with NYSEF as I graduate from this program. I couldn't have asked for a better send off."

This year ’ s CanAm U14 Alpine Championships took place at Mount Tremblant in Quebec, Canada from March 31 to April 3 with two NYSEF athletes in attendance. Winter Term U14 second year alpine athletes Evelyn Palma and Jace Bush each qualified for the competition with solid performances at U14 Eastern Regional Championships at Whiteface earlier in the month st rd
The CanAm Event was a great and action-packed experience for both athletes, with the quality of competition in the field being incredibly high Both Jace and Evelyn were able to stay in the mix and gain great experience The courses were not easy, as the rain and wind played a major role in the surface conditions; racers experienced everything from mashed potatoes to a full-on World Cup surface throughout the week Unfortunately, both the skills quest event and slalom race were cancelled due to weather.
“We had young Bobby Marshal join us from Holimont. All 3 athletes enjoyed some success ” said Head Coach Mike Mezzetti “Jace and Bobby both enjoyed top 30 finishes in the GS. Evelyn finished 48th in the GS and 42 in SG, with Jace just missing the top 30 in SG. All-in-all, it was a great experience and great competition!”
Colorado for the 2025 USASA National Championships. Week one of competition was for the snowboard athletes and took place from March 29 through April 3 with week two taking place from April 5 through the 9 for the skiers. th rd th th
NYSEF athletes had some great performances overall, bringing home four National Championship medals - two silver and two bronze. Aston Ferrillo and Nilana Hofrichter each placed second in the skiercross in their respective divisions, with Sean Rosenzweig and Ash Georgiades placing third in their divisions.

Gore hosted Masters Nationals this spring, drawing Masters skiers from across the country for three full days of racing and competition in all divisions Competitors ranging from 18-90 competed in varying age classes distinguished by 5 year intervals
Competition was fierce but NYSEF’s Masters athletes did well in their respective age classes and were competitive overall, with Mark Sertl, LJ Swanson, and Zach Carpenter claiming top spots on the podium in their respective classes Terrance Fogarty, NYSEF’s longtime Masters coach also had some great performances.
The excitement and buzz around the event may bring Masters racing to Gore with a fulltime offering this coming winter. Hats off to the athletes and team at Gore who pulled this event off without a hitch despite battling illness, weather conditions, and just about every other variable you could think of Pulling off a great event is reliant on great teamwork and with the help of J J Pavese coming up from Belleayre NYSEF’s teamwork was on full display. Gore’s commitment to Masters Racing was recognized by receiving the Jack C. Tobin Award, given to the individual, group, or team for an outstanding contribution to Masters Ski Racing Well done team!
NYSEF’s LJ Swanson won the Women’s Class 9 Giant Slalom
NYSEF’s Zac Carpenter stands atop the podium for Men’s Class 4. He placed 2 in Super G, 1 in Slalom, and 3 in Giant Slalom. nd st rd
NYSEF’s Rachel Fogarty placed 3 in both Slalom and Giant Slalom rd
On April 8th NYSEF’s Big Mountain Freeride team flew out to Kirkwood Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe for the week-long IFSA Junior Freeride Championships This end-of-season event brought together the top performing juniors from North and South America. This year NYSEF athletes Colden Robinson and Leland Carpenter earned a spot in the competition based on their strong results this season. They were among the top 60 U15 athletes in all of the Americas this winter, punching their ticket to this prestigious, invite only event!
N Y S E F
The Championship event took place on the legendary "Cirque", a permanently closed north-facing bowl sitting above Kirkwood “We enjoyed classic springtime conditions in the Sierra with some beautiful bluebird days for competing and free skiing around the mountain.” said Head Coach Nate Trachte “Although the competition didn't go our way, the boys still had a blast. Highlights included; skiing their first proper couloir, the classic springtime "wiggle," exploring around Lake Tahoe on our off day, and some proper sends off the cliffs around Kirkwood. A great end to the inaugural NYSEF Big Mountain Freeride season!”
Each year athletes begin the season setting goals and making a plan to achieve those goals. Goal setting is a cornerstone of success in many aspects of our daily lives and ski racing is no different Three of our Belleayre athletes exceeded their goals this season and made it to Eastern Finals at the U16 and U18 levels, joining Gore and Whiteface athletes and coaches bringing together the NYSEF team to support all the athletes who qualified.
Belleayre athletes Samuel Rein (U18), Caitlin Fonseca (U16), and Georgia Schmidt (U16) all qualified for Eastern Finals this season demonstrating their perseverance and commitment to getting better every day. Catching up with Belleayre head U16 Coach, Kate McKenna, she shared that each of these athletes had a focus on things they could control away from results.
Y S E F
McKenna shared, “They all knew they can’t control how everyone else does and this helped them stay focused on their skiing throughout the year. ”
For Samuel (Sammy) Rein this meant finishing more clean runs and making relative progress all year long. Sammy started skiing at Holiday Valley and has been with NYSEF Belleayre since he was a U12 As a skier he admires Bode Miller and his style to take chances. Coach Kate, proudly shared of Sammy’s style, “when you watch him ski, he’s always entertaining to watch and it’s not a surprise Bode is his skiing hero, the way he skis.”
For U16s Georgia Schmidt and Caitlan Fonseca process and putting the work into getting to the next level of their skiing really paid off “They are both really athletic and seriously love skiing. They definitely take it seriously but have a lot of fun too.”
The highlight of the girls week may have been the monster bag of gummy bears and some sugar inspiration each day Great work achieving goals and joining our other qualifying athletes at Finals. Big congrats to Nora Petrocci for notching some more strong results and to Emmett and Charlie Fox, as well as George Desantis, and Dash Hamilton for also getting it done landing a few more top 10 results to close out their seasons!

2025 Supertour Finals was a really neat opportunity for the NYSEF Nordic team. This event is rarely in our backyard so it was great to take advantage and get the team on the start line. The event is a finale series of the best cross country ski racers in the country, seniors and juniors; including athletes who have been racing on the World Cup all season It’s always cool to race against the person who's poster is on your wall! Racing this late in the season is a great development opportunity, it continues the season in a way which adds momentum and motivation for the training season ahead but also allows athletes to improve their skills on courses that will be featured for 2026 US Senior Nationals next season
NYSEF nordic athletes Kai Mckinnon, Max Fey, Raquelle Landa, Duncan Van Dorn, Filippos Kogiantis, and central NY guest skier Cora Hinsdill all put themselves out there and participated in some of the competitions. Special shout out to Kai and Max who competed in every race. Max, still as a young first year U16 had some of his best results to date in a cross country ski event.
Another note from the event; Many of our Devo team athletes participated in a fun ski with National Team athlete and World Cup star from Vermont, Ben Ogden The weather was rough that day with layers of ice and freezing rain and wet snow but all had fun! Special thanks to Ben and Mount Van Hoevenberg for putting in a fun cross country ski cross course!

The success of a team is never the result of one person it’s built by many. Our Nordic Spring Awards and Potluck BBQ was a celebration of just that: the collective effort, spirit, and support that fueled the 2024–2025 season Athletes, parents, coaches, and community members came together to reflect on the months of training, traveling, competing, and cheering and to recognize the dedication it took from every corner of our Nordic family to make it all possible.
We recognized all of our athletes and revisited standout moments from the year Podium performances across cross country skiing, biathlon, Nordic combined, and ski jumping highlighted the strength and versatility of our team. We also had fun with a few creative superlative awards, including the Johannes Team Captain Award and the Next Ben Ogden of the Adirondacks.
A heartfelt congratulations to our graduating seniors; Daven Linck, Abigail VanDorn, Jenna Stainken, Jack Kroll, Mitchel Penning, Forrest Slingerland, Fillipos Kogiantis, Nathaniel Burke, and Landon Kinal Your leadership and legacy will continue to inspire the younger athletes following in your tracks.
To our families and program support volunteers thank you for the countless ways you lifted this team throughout the year Whether it was helping run the ADK Tour de Ski, cleaning our HQ bathroom, sidestepping and prepping the jump hill, or traveling cross-country with athletes to Biathlon Junior Nationals, your dedication has been felt in every corner of this program. We couldn’t do it without you
A special shoutout to Molly Hann, recipient of the Crazy Falcon Volunteer of the Year award for her unwavering support of the DEVO Development Program. Her energy, reliability, and heart have helped shape a generation of young skiers and we are endlessly grateful. We look forward to what’s ahead and to digging deep into our summer training,
