Championship Season is Here

The sun is rising earlier, the birds are chirping, and the snow is softening beneath our boots, which can only mean one thing - Spring has sprung! It's hard to believe that Championship season is already upon us and we’ll be wrapping up our on-snow activities soon. We are excited to see the culmination of all our athletes’ hard work this season as they compete for coveted podium spots and personal bests at various championship events across the US and Eastern Canada this coming month

February was another busy month for NYSEF staff and athletes; We hosted several large events including the USCSA Championships, Cross Country Junior National Championships, The NorAm Hole Shot Tour, several alpine NorAm Super G races, and The FIS Men’s Ski Jumping World Cup. Our athletes traveled both locally and internationally to compete, highlighted by Winter Term Nordic Combined athlete Kai McKinnon, who placed second in the team relay at Junior World Championships in Slovenia

As we look forward to the offseason with excitement, we are beginning to plan our summer programming and training projects - keep an eye out for new training opportunities with NYSEF this summer coming soon!

See you out there,

McKinnon Wins Silver in Team Relay

NYSEF Winter Term Nordic Combined athlete Kai McKinnon has had a season to remember this winter! After traveling to Gangwon, South Korea during the final week of January to compete at the Youth Olympic Games, Kai made her way to Planica, Slovenia where she joined the US Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Junior World Championship Team (including NYSEF alum Tate Frantz) for a week of competition against the best junior athletes in the world.

After placing 16th in the individual event, and 9th in the team event at Youth Olympic Games, Kai was looking to better her performance on the international scene. “I didn’t do that great at the Youth Olympics, so going into Junior Worlds I was hoping for a top 20,” McKinnon said She greatly exceeded her expectations during the individual HS102/5km competition, where she jumped 79.5 meters for 94.3 points, slotting herself into 15th position after jumping. During the skiing portion of the event, Kai was able to reel in 9 athletes in front of her to end up in 6th place overall “I ended up with a good jump result and everything just snapped into place and I got sixth and it was incredible.” said McKinnon.

On the following day, McKinnon teamed up with Alexa Brabec of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club/University of Utah to compete in the team sprint HS 102/2x4.5k. On the hill, McKinnon started things off with an 84.0-meter jump for 89.1 points. Brabec then put together an 89.5-meter jump for 107.4 points (196.5 total points), securing the fifth position for the sprint, starting +0:29 back of first place

On the ski loop, Brabec and McKinnon were able to move into third place after 0.7k, and then up to second place after 3k The duo then took the race lead after 4 5k, as they battled with Japan for the gold medal They were neck and neck with Japan until the final stretch after 8.2k, with McKinnon crossing the finish line at 9k just +0.7 behind Japan, securing the silver medal for the United States, and becoming the first Americans to win a Nordic Combined Junior World Championships medal!

“To be the first American to get silver with my partner was incredible,” McKinnon said. “To make history like that was such an incredible feeling.”

Upon her return home, Kai was welcomed back to the Olympic Jumping Complex with a surprise reception of friends, family, coaches, and local dignitaries Coaches Larry Stone and Colin Delaney spoke with pride about Kai’s career with NYSEF, and her accomplishments this season. “I was super excited to get home and see all my family and friends and jump on my home hills,” McKinnon said. “It’s awesome to see all these people here just watching me and supporting me and congratulating me. ”

Kai will return to competition this month at home; she plans to race in cross country Junior National Championships at Mount Van Hoevenberg from March 11-16th.

NYSEF Athletes Sweep Podiums at Junior Nationals

From the Adirondack Daily Enterprise (March 13, 2024)

Local New York Ski Educational Foundation ski jumpers and Nordic combined athletes rose to the top of the eastern team at the Junior National Championships in Anchorage, Alaska from Feb. 27 to March 1.

Each year, at the end of the competition season, some of the best junior ski jumpers and Nordic combined athletes in the U S come together for the Junior National Championships

The location for this event rotates between the regions of the Nordic skiing world in the U.S., bringing the best skiers from the Rocky Mountain, Intermountain, Central, Eastern and Alaskan divisions to compete for the title of the best in the country

This year the east’s best skiers, most of whom spring from the Lake Placid NYSEF program, achieved a first by sweeping the podium in both boys ski jumping individual events U-20 and U-16 age groups and the team jumping event

Wilmington native Henry Loher, 15, was the winner of the U-16 event and the overall winner. Loher was followed by NYSEF skiers Max Fey of Lake Placid and Eli Larkin of Plattsburgh in the U-16 event

Loher had the longest jump of the day, with a 67 meter jump on the K-65 meter hill which was shortened to only one round due to heavy, unpredictable winds.

The U-20 event was won by Schuyler Clapp, of NYSEF’s Winter Term Program Mitchell Penning, a Northwood School athlete from Toronto, Ontario placed second followed by Jack Kroll also of Northwood School, in third.

On the Nordic Combined side, Max Fey won the Men’s Individual U16 title, and Northwood School’s Jack Kroll placed second in the Men’s Individual U20 competition.

In the team jumping event, the following day, the east’s boys triumphed with the team of Loher Fey Larkin and Clapp The second east team of Penning Larkin Duncan Van Dorn of

March 2024

There was also a team Nordic combined event, which saw the number one east team take the gold medal in the U-16 division with local NYSEF skiers Fey and Van Dorn winning. In the older U-20 age group, Kroll and Clapp won the gold medal.

NYSEF Coaches Colin Delaney and Larry Stone provided the management and coaching of the eastern jumping and Nordic combined team During the team’s time away, NYSEF coach Jay Rand stayed on the home front, continuing training for the weekly development program of local future stars at NYSEF’s home facility.

Whiteface Athletes Meet & Greet with US Ski Team

The month of February saw the return of NorAm competitions to our home venues; Gore Mountain hosted the Freeride Holeshot Tour for ski and snowboard cross, Whiteface Mountain hosted two men ’ s and women ’ s Super G races, and the Lake Placid Olympic Jumping Complex saw the return of Freestyle Aerials after a five-year hiatus. Many of our older NYSEF athletes were afforded the opportunity of competing and forerunning in the alpine and cross events, while our younger athletes had the incredible opportunity to both spectate at an elite-level event and rub elbows with some members of the Stifel US Ski Team in the days before and after the events.

On Saturday, February 24th, members of the Men’s Stifel US Alpine Ski Team stopped by the NYSEF Building during lunchtime for a meet and greet with our U10 and U12 alpine and freeride athletes. The men answered questions about their training and racing schedules, as well as their journey to make the US Ski Team, before signing autographs and taking photos with our athletes

On Sunday the 25th, Megan Smallhouse, and Karenna Elliott, members of the Stifel US Women’s Freestyle Aerials World Cup Team, met up with our Skimiester and U10 Intro to Competitive Skiing athletes at Whiteface for a morning of skiing and mingling. Our athletes began the day skiing with Karenna and Megan off of the Warhorse chair, where they challenged one another to races on the cross course, and showed off their moves in the terrain park During lunch, the aerials athletes answered questions about their sport and how they train, showed off videos from their recent World Cup competition in LacBeauport (where Karenna won gold!), and signed autographs. After lunch, Megan and Karenna cheered on our athletes during their Mini World Cup Competition and then ended the day with some freeskiing on the Wilmington Trail “I had so much fun skiing with Megan and Karenna, and I even beat them in the skiercross!” said Skimeister athlete Maya S.

NYSEF Featured at FIS Ski Jumping World Cup Opening Ceremony

The FIS Men’s Ski Jumping World Cup made its return to the Lake Placid Olympic Jumping Complex from February 9-11, 2024 bringing some of the world’s best ski jumpers and fans to town for a fun-filled weekend of competition! This year NYSEF alum Tate Frantz was absent from the US men ’ s roster, as he was in Planica, Slovenia competing in the Junior World Championships, but that didn't stop NYSEF athletes and their families from showing up in droves to spectate!

On the first night of the competition, NYSEF athletes were invited to assist with the Opening Ceremonies as flagbearers representing athletes from each of the competing nations. NYSEF’s alpine athletes staged at the end of the inrun for the HS128, where they hoisted their respective flags before skiing down the landing hill, and meeting members of NYSEF’s cross country and ski jumping teams to hand the flags. Athletes vigorously waved the flag of each nation as the competing teams were introduced to the crowd for photos. “I’ve always wanted to ski down the landing hill of the jumps - it was so much fun to finally get to do it and to be a part of such a big, fun event!” said Sunnie G., of NYSEF’s Winter Term.
