From the Director’s Desk
Hello NYSEF Friends & Family,
It's been quite an exciting start to the 2024-2025 season this summer
Our Nordic athletes and coaches continue their rigorous summer schedule, with ski jumpers and nordic combined athletes recently participating in the Star Spangled Ski Jump, a fun summer tradition in Lake Placid. Our XC skiers have taken to the roads and roller loops around Lake Placid as part of their summer conditioning - our Junior Race Team will head west to Rochester for an intense training program with the Rochester Nordic Racing Team
Alpine racers found snow at Mt. Hood, Oregon, and Copper Mountain, Colorado, and will be heading to various on-snow camps later this summer in Chile and in the fall to keep their their skills sharp. Freeride athletes have been busy at the pool, training and working hard.
Keep up the great work everyone - the hard work will pay off this winter!
Soon, we will all be gathering to celebrate our NYSEF community during the annual Summer Benefit at the Olympic Jumping Complex on August 17th. From now until then, I hope you all have a great summer.
See you soon,

John Norton, Executive Director

NYSEF’s Head Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Coach Colin Delaney was honored with the U.S. & Snowboard Gold Award for Development Coach of the Year Award during the prestigious organization’s annual awards ceremony on May 15 in Park City, Utah.
U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s Gold Awards represent the highest honors within the organization.Delaney, a native of Lake Placid who grew up in the NYSEF program as a nordic combined athlete, has served as Head Coach of the NYSEF program since 2016
During the 2023-24 winter season, Delaney coached a team of athletes who swept multiple podiums at Junior National Championships in Alaska, while also coaching NYSEF Nordic Combined athlete Kai McKinnon, who, along with her teammate Alexa Brabec from the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, became the first Americans to win a Silver Medal in the team competition at Junior World Championships in Slovenia McKinnon also competed in Nordic Combined at the Youth Olympics in Gangwon, South Korea.
“I’m deeply honored by this award from U.S. Ski & Snowboard,” said Delaney. “Its been an absolute pleasure to be mentored by coaches I admire like Larry Stone and Jay Rand, while also sharing what I’ve learned with NYSEF’s next generation. I give them a lot of credit in my success, getting a group of talented athletes to fall in love with the sport who could push each other, helping each other to stronger performances than they would be capable of alone ”
Delaney was also awarded the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Coach Award for Ski Jumping/Nordic Combined Development Coach of the Year
“Colin’s dedication and commitment to athletic success at every level is evident in the results his athletes achieved this past season, ” said NYSEF Executive Director John Norton “His ability to connect with athletes and help them pursue their individual goals is part of what makes him such an amazing coach.”

Spring in Copper
At the end of May, alpine athletes from NYSEF’s Men’s and Women’s U16 and FIS Teams converged in Summit County, Colorado for spring training at Copper Mountain with FIS Men’s Head Coach Seppi Stiegler and NYSEF’s Executive Director John Norton Copper Mountain is one of the best alpine training venues in the United States, with ski trails typically remaining open through June for gate training and free skiing.
Copper Camp kicked off with four days of GS training and freeski drills on Andy’s Encore and Ptarmigan. Snow conditions held up well throughout the first block with good coverage Training sessions on the hill took place in the morning before temperatures got too high, with the afternoons filled with video review and dryland trainingincluding games such as beach volleyball and “tennoccer”, a soccer/tennis hybrid
Athletes had a day off from skiing in the middle of the camp during which they took advantage of the local hiking trails and swimming holes, and resupplied on groceries and snacks for their condo, with the men ’ s team cooking a chicken parmesan dinner for the team.
The second block of training was dedicated to all things slalom. The first day consisted of a double session, with two sections of SL rhythm and a brush corridor drill course in the morning, and drills and directed freeskiing after break Athletes continued to spend their afternoons training dryland, and duking it out on the tennis court in heated matches of tennoccer. After three more days of slalom and dryland, athletes were spent, and ready for their travel day back home
“We were lucky to get a ton of training volume with great weather.” said John Norton “Thanks to everyone that made the trip successful for the athletes - much progress was made through hard work and focus as well as some fun mixed in. A quick shoutout to Jackson, who we missed due to an unfortunate injury, though we have no doubt he’ll be back at it before we know it ”
Alpine athletes from the U16, U18, and FIS teams will be back on the slopes in August, during NYSEF’s annual trip to Valle Nevado, Chile

NYSEF’s Maddie Phaneuf Joins U.S. Biathlon’s
Inaugural Women’s
Coaching Initiative

Maddie on the Move

NYSEF’s Head Biathlon Coach Maddie Phaneuf is one of eight women selected for U.S. Biathlon’s new Women's Coaching Initiative, which was announced on June 25
The initiative is U.S. Biathlon’s first major step as an organization to include women at a higher level of coaching, a move Phanuef says she hopes will push open the doors for more women to try biathlon
“Having women in these roles, getting to experience bigger races, and bring what they’ve learned back to their own club will help their athletes develop and be better,” she said
Each woman selected to be a part of this inaugural program will be working with U.S. Biathlon to tailor their experience to their goals and needs as a coach It means more exposure to international races and Phaneuf says she hopes it gets more women into coaching, period
Phaneuf is working with U.S. Biathlon to figure out what her next steps will be with the Women’s Coaching Initiative, but she’s pretty sure it will involve traveling to a World Cup race or two.
“What I get out of these experiences is being able to collaborate with coaches at the World Cup level,” she adds “Seeing how high-level coaches handle the chaos of a high-level event is intriguing to me and I’m excited to see how they do it.”
Last winter, Phaneuf participated in the IBU Academy’s First Level Course, spending time in Austria, Sweden, and Poland learning from well-known experts on the theoretical and practical lessons in the fields of skiing, shooting, exercise physiology, coaching soft skills, equipment, applied training science, biathlon performance, and the business of sport.
Phaneuf says those experiences had a significant impact on her approach as “We

The “Over Easy” Team
For most people, the words “ over easy ” invoke thoughts of brunch - a relaxed morning enjoying bacon, eggs, and coffee on a lazy Sunday... but for mountain bikers in the Adirondacks, the words have taken on a whole different, and much more intimidating meaning in recent years.

Since 2020, the Over Easy Mountain Bike Race has been one of the most talked about endurance events in the Adirondacks. Dreamt up by two local cyclists from Keene, the event connects single track trail systems in Lake Placid, Wilmington, Keene, and Elizabethtown, culminating with a course which spans over 95 miles and gains over 11,500 feet of elevation. The race has no official start time, no aid stations, and no course support; participants are expected to navigate the single track on their own, with the goal of arriving at the finish line in Elizabethtown in time for the annual finishers party at Otis Mountain. There are no awards, no entry fee, and no limit to who can attempt the ominous course.
For the 2024 Edition of the Over Easy, event organizers created an “official” relay, with specific handoff locations, allowing for teams of up to four people to join forces and conquer the heralded route Among the many locals who took the opportunity to team up and divvy out the climbing and single track was a group from NYSEF Nordic! Head Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Coach Colin Delaney joined forces with athletes Kai McKinnon and Holly Erenstone to complete the course in approximately 14 hours and 53 minutes!
Kai began the team effort at 3:30am at the Heaven Hills Trail system in Lake Placid After working her way through Henry’s Woods, the Jackrabbit Trail, Craigwood Trails, and the Lussi Logger Trails, she emerged on route 86 and began the descent into Wilmington, where she would tag off to teammate Holly Erenstone for leg # 2, beginning at Whiteface Mountain
Holly spent the next four hours weaving her way through the Flume Trial system, before making her way up and over the infamous Cooper Kill climb and into the swamp above Cooper Kill is the segment that is the most dreaded by all Over Easy riders, and involves lots of “hike-a-bike” through deep mud. “Cooper is not a trail, its a marsh!” said Erenstone.
At Hardy Road in Wilmington, Coach Colin Delaney would take over the effort, completing both legs 3 and 4 on his own - over 45 miles of riding with nearly 6,700 feet of elevation gain! Colin’s segment included the Hardy Road Trails, followed by a climb up and over Jay Mountain, a loop through the Blueberry Trails, and then on to Otis Mountain He reached the finish line at Otis around 6:30pm, where he was greeted by Kai, Holly, and the local cycling community as well as other finishers. Congratulations Kai, Holly, and Colin!
