• Additional classroom space has been added to the upper elementary building.

• Air conditioning has been added to the middle school and high school, which will help reduce distractions and provide a better and more comfortable learning environment on hot days for students in those buildings.

• The high school football field has been completely overhauled. It features new tiling for more effective drainage as well as a new base, new turf, new goalposts and new LED lighting.

• The football field can also be used as a soccer field.

• A new track has been built around the football field in the stadium.

• New goals and additional tile to improve drainage have been added to the soccer field.

We hope you enjoy the upgrades and have a great 2019-20 school year. One thing that has not changed: We will continue our emphasis on providing an intentionally positive culture to create an atmosphere where all students have the opportunity to feel supported and, in turn, perform optimally in the classroom.

Homeless Act Provides for Students in Need In these tough economic times, the needs of our school community are greater than ever. The passage of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act allows us to provide assistance to families and students dealing with homelessness. This assistance could be in the form of transportation to and from school, free meals, academic help, field trip and other school fees paid, and so on.

A student is considered homeless if one of the following categories is met:

• Living on the street or in a car or abandoned building, etc.

• Living in a shelter such as Inter-Faith or AWARE. • Children placed in foster care are considered homeless for the

first 6 months they are in the system.

• Doubling up -- Children and immediate family who have moved in with another family or relative.

• Hotel, Motel -- people who live in welfare sponsored rooms or rooms in hotels/motels.

If you know of a family that might qualify according to these guidelines, please contact your school counselor.

Families and students in need should be aware of governmental support for the advancement of a student’s education through an initiative referred to as the McKinney-Vento Act. Any student who has had their living situation disrupted or strained might find financial assistance through this governmental program developed for assisting students in completing school. Students qualify if they and their family live with another family; or if they themselves live with another family; or if they are living with an extended family member due to financial considerations. Basic needs for assisting students in the task of attending school are areas where assistance might be granted: Summer school; additional course requirements; field trip costs; and even food and gas (as appropriate) are areas where support may be provided.

BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETINGS 2019-2020

NORTHWEST COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER The Northwest Community Health Center is a convenient location for affordable medical and behavioral health services for patients of all ages.

It is like having a family doctor’s office in R.W. Kidder Middle School.

The Northwest center staff conducts physical examinations, diagnoses and treats acute and chronic illnesses, administers immunizations, offers hearing and vision screening, and provides preventive health services and education.

Also available at the Northwest center are lab-specimen collection and referrals for evaluation and treatment of illnesses, and injuries not suitable for managing in a school health center.

The Northwest center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday year-round. Stop by the center at 6700 Rives Junction Rd. or call 517-569-3200 or 517-748-5500 for an appointment at the Northwest center.

The Center for Family Health operates the Northwest center. Any adult or child treated at the Northwest center can utilize the services at the downtown Jackson facility at 505 N. Jackson St., and the Dental Clinic at 500 N. Jackson St. All Center for Family Health locations accept most commercial and government insurance groups, including Medicaid, offer a sliding discount program, and never turns anyone away because of inability to pay.

Minutes of all regular and special meetings are kept on file at the administration office located at 6900 Rives Junction Road, Jackson, Michigan.

Section 504 of Rehabilitation Act As required by the Office of Civil Rights, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (“Section 504”), Northwest Community Schools must notify staff of the OCR-approved Section 504 policies and procedures and notify parents, students, and staff how to obtain hard copies.

The District has an updated Section 504 policy, which was approved by the Board of Education. The policy is available on the school district website (www.nwschools.org) under Parent Resources. You can view or print the policy and procedure manual from there.

Northwest Community Schools has a District Section 504 Coordinator whose responsibility it is to oversee implementation and ensure compliance on Section 504 records, forms, and procedures; plan and present staff training as needed; consult with district personnel and parents on Section 504.

Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires local school districts to ensure that all teachers hired to teach core academic subjects in Title 1 programs are highly qualified. In general, a “highly qualified teacher” is one with full certification, a Bachelor’s Degree and demonstrated competence in subject knowledge and teaching. (Core subjects include English, Reading or Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Languages, Civics and Government, Economics, Arts, History and Geography.) Parents of children in schools that receive Title 1 funding have the right to request information regarding the professional qualifications of the student’s classroom teachers.

Northwest Preschool & Child Care News

Northwest Preschool and Child Care ended the school year on a very strong note. Our preschoolers had a year-end celebration with Candy Land themed stations for the kids to enjoy and they received a prize at each one.

At the last station they received a snow cone to take with them. We had our preschool graduation on May 22nd and we had 59 graduates. Families were entertained by songs from the graduates and will be sent to the elementary school ready for the next step in their education.

Kristy West After getting staff training in Positive Behaviors Interventions & SupDirector of Preschool & Child Care ports (PBIS) we continued to implement PBIS in our building. Students filled another bucket with reward PBIS tickets and all of the preschoolers earned an ice cream sundae party.

Our Infant and Toddler Room continues to see growth and expansion. We are also working on building up our toddler playground and are excited about those improvements.

Our summer program for 3-12 year olds started on June 12th. Field trips and S.T.E.M. activities were on the schedule.

NW Preschool & Child Care held a craft sale and school storage closet clean out sale on July 13th. Besides craft items, many nice educational items were for sale. All proceeds benefited NW Preschool & Child Care.

We appreciate the family and community support we received during the last school year and are proud to be a part of the thriving Little Mounties School. Looking forward to the 2019-2020 school year!

Northwest Early Elementary News

Energizing Education is an early grade reading program with a two-pronged approach to improving literacy. It involves having volunteer mentors work one-on-one with students in reading and writing, and includes family nights which offer engagement activities that provide skills and materials to nurture reading at home. If you are interested in mentoring students please contact Lois Dunning at (517)990-6072. Mentors make a difference!!

Mentors only need to commit to two (½) hour sessions a week after their initial training. Will you be the one to make a difference? Contact Energizing Education today for more information.

We hope everyone took time to relax this summer and are now getting ready for another great school year. As we continue to strive to offer the very best in education, Northwest Early Elementary School will be operating under the theme, “Every Day Counts!� This continued attendance theme will incorporate efficiency from the staff in the planning for engaging lessons and student attendance. As a staff we will be working diligently to monitor student attendance, as well as, assist families with strategies and resources to ensure student attendance.

Students with perfect and nearly perfect attendance will be recognized at our monthly reward assemblies. We are asking for all community members to encourage your students or the students in your neighborhood to attend our community school everyday that they are healthy.

Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of school days due to absence for any reason.

National studies have shown that 1 in 10 children in kindergarten and 1st grade are chronically absent. When a student is not in school regularly, they miss out on the fundamental building blocks of reading and math skills.

Every day counts, with your continued support we will overcome any barriers in education and offer the very best in education.

Coding and robotics is so much fun at Northwest Early Elementary School! Second grade students at NWEE had an exciting robotics unit to end the 2018/2019 school year in the STEM Lab. They followed instructions to build a race car using LEGO WeDo 2.0 kits, then programmed them to race. The final day of the unit, they put their hard work to the test and had races against other robots their classmates built!

Dear Northwest Elementary Families and Friends, I am old enough to remember when the original Rubik’s Cube first came out in 1980. It was at the height of it’s craze by the time I was ten years old and it was in every kids backpack (which we only wore on one shoulder back then, by the way). The cube seemed completely unsolvable, but by the end of my fifth grade year, kids were able to solve the puzzle in the time it took us to line up for recess. In education, we come across puzzles about teaching and learning that seem to be unsolvable. We practice and practice, we work together to collect and analyze student data, we collect discipline data and we seek to understand the whole child. We put countless hours into our discussions surrounding educational practices and implementation of structures and supports that will help us better serve our students and families.

Northwest Elementary is a place where the staff is constantly evaluating our effectiveness. We are putting our time and energy into solving what others may see as unsolvable. We are blessed to be apart of a district and community that supports our efforts to be problem-solvers. We are working, especially during the summer months, to bring you the very best systems implementation that will allow for your students success in the 2019-2020 school year, and we don’t cut corners (no pulling the colored stickers off and putting them back on the cube)! We cannot wait to get back to work with our staff and students this upcoming year. We believe amazing things will happen in the 2019-2020 school year.

PBIS Update Since launching our Positive Behaviors Interventions & Supports (PBIS) program in January of 2018, our students and staff have made impressive progress in implementing this initiative.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports plays a role in every aspect of our building. Students have learned the expectations that we have in our building and we work daily to teach, reteach and reinforce them. The whole child approach to learning continues to strengthen as we are putting a greater focus on attendance and the importance of being in school each day.

Proactive strategies such as student incentives, parent education, etc. will help reinforce the importance of attending school every day.

Field Day Fun This spring Mrs. Masters planned a fantastic Field Day for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders of Mountie Nation.

On Tuesday, June 4th the students of Northwest Elementary School participated in eight stations of physically focused fun. This was an excellent opportunity for students to show their ability to be respectful, responsible, safe, and put forth great effort! It also helped them demonstrate sportsmanship and celebrate the positive culture of Northwest. The stations included tug-owar, cornhole, twister, a relay race, and a variety of inflatable obstacle courses.

We would like to thank Mrs. Masters and all of the volunteers who gave their time and energy to help make this fun day possible!

Each year our 5th graders take their learning outside of the classroom and head to Somerset Beach Camp for two days and one night. This camp experience is a wonderful way for our students to experience new activities like zip lining, work on team building skills, forge new relationships, and celebrate the end of the year!

The focus during the day is rotating between different stations that include a nature walk, geocaching, animal husbandry, canoeing, team building, archery, zip lining and tye-dying. In the evening the students split into two groups and play a competitive game similar to capture the flag called Gold Rush. The night ends with a bonfire with smores and a scream inducing hayride!

On the final day the students finish their stations and then participate in a “crud war.” Included in “crud war” is water balloons, bird seed, flour, and shaving cream. To finish the day, they clean off in the lake and enjoy an afternoon of water sports.

All of our students and parents were

great representatives of Mountie Nation and we hope they have lasting memories from their time at Camp Somerset!

On June 6th, we celebrated our 5th grade class and their accomplishments as they finished their time at Northwest Elementary School. Each student was recognized by Mr. Kelly and Mr. Bush for their completion of their elementary school career.

Mrs. McCord acknowledged the hard work our student council representatives accomplished in their service projects this school year. Each class voted on two students as Magnificent Mounties and those students were awarded certificates and medals. Finally, we were treated to a wonderful slideshow created by Mrs. Boss looking back on the year. We wish the best of luck to the Class of 2026 as they move onto the middle school!

Mounties Go Yooperin’ Every spring the 4th graders of Northwest Elementary School have the opportunity to venture to the Great North on a curriculum-based field trip. This year 9 teachers, 182 students, and 154 chaperones went

on a whirlwind adventure to take learning to the Upper Peninsula!

The three day trip began bright and early when the buses rolled out of Northwest El’s parking lot at 5:30 am.

They made their way north arriving in Mackinaw City just in time to catch a ferry to Mackinac Island. The groups toured the scenic beauty of Mackinac Island from the comfort of horsedrawn carriages, enjoyed lunch on the island, learned about the history of the island at Fort Mackinac, and of course, indulged in some of the fudge the island is famous for.

We are excited to have you and your student as part of our Kidder Nation. All of our staff have Principal been working very hard to prepare for the return of our Kind, Motivated and Successful (KMS) students and we look forward to meeting our new sixth grade students!

For those of you that are new to our building, we look forward to getting to know you. We are thrilled that you will be part of our Northwest Middle School family and will contribute to our excellent academic, athletic and fine arts programs. Also, please Cory Parrott make sure that you check our school website or follow Assistant Principal us on Facebook so that we can send you updates on all the great things happening at the middle school and upcoming events that you will not want to miss. Our sixth grade orientation will be Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at 6:00 pm in our gymnasium. Please look on our website throughout the summer for more information.

Student academic success is the main goal of our entire staff. We have set high expectations, and are working diligently to ensure that all of our students will reach their highest potential and offer assistance to those that need it. However, students and staff cannot do it alone, we need and welcome parents’ positive commitment to their child’s education.

We encourage you to get involved with your child’s school activities this year. Visit our school, attend a concert or athletic performance, call or email your child’s teacher, or attend parent conferences, are all ways you can be involved. on a journey further into the Upper Peninsula where they viewed the rushing copper-hued Tahquamenon Falls. They stopped for a traditional yooper lunch of pasties, and headed to Whitefish Point where they visited the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. That evening they enjoyed a dinner aboard a Soo Locks boat tour.

On their final day they were immersed in the colonial history of Fort Michilimackinac and visited Mill Creek Discovery Park. Ending the trip on a bang, they got to watch the chopping, sawing, axe-throwing, log-rolling and speed-climbing fun of a competitive lumberjack show before

embarking on the journey home.

This trip provides students with the unique opportunity of seeing the Michigan history they have learned so much about come to life. We hope all of our students and parents who attended made lifelong memories!

At the end of the school year, Kidder Middle School held their Annual Awards Ceremony. This was the 50th year that we have recognized our students for their academic honors. We recognized over 500 students on this day for their outstanding academic achievements. It is such a pleasure to recognize them for all that they have achieved and contributed to the school throughout the year. We had a fantastic turnout from our parents, grandparents and community who came to honor them on their special day.

All of you play a very important part in their success and we want to thank you for that. Congratulations to all of our students who earned awards and we wish them success in their continued academic career. Great Job! A special thank you to Mrs. Patricia Hale and Mrs. Andrea Parker for all of their hard work in the preparation of our Award Ceremony and our 50th Program as well as all of our secretaries. This day is made special because of all of their hard work and months of dedication. We also want to thank Mr. Giannunzio for making class videos for each of the ceremonies.

Kidder Middle School Choirs!

BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO NW KMS HONORS CHOIR The MS Honors Choir has been selected to perform at the Michigan Music State Conference. They were chosen by blind audition from a panel of judges.

This honor was given to only two middle school choirs in Michigan.

The MS Honors Choir will perform next January in Grand Rapids at the JW Marriot Hotel’s International Ballroom. This conference showcases the top choirs, bands, and orchestras in the state to more than 1,000 music educators.

Kidder Middle School Information

The Jo Ellen Mann Award goes to an outstanding 8th grade student that shows Citizenship, Leadership, and Scholarship throughout his/her middle school years. This award was created in honor of Jo Ellen Mann, a well-loved counselor at Kidder Middle School, who has since passed away. This award is voted on by the 8th grade teachers.

This year's winner is a valued part of the Leo Club, National Junior Honor Society and Honors Choir. She also received awards for Math Excellence, Language Arts Excellence, Science Excellence, and Honor Roll. Congratulations to our 2018-2019 Northwest Middle School winner, Sasha McClurg. We are so proud of you!

At the end of the school year, we held our annual Flashbash for our students before they left for summer vacation. At this activity, students have an opportunity to take pictures and sign yearbooks before leaving for the summer. This year we also added some relays and had activities for each grade level. It was a fun and exciting way to close out the school year.

We owe a big thank you to Brenda Campbell and Heather Caster who put in numerous hours working on our yearbook so that students have a great product to keep and sign at this activity. We also want to thank Mrs. Holbrook and the many other staff members and students that helped to organize and run the relays so that our students could enjoy this activity.

We are fortunate to have so many people willing to help make our school a great place for our students.

A Note from the Counselors

Northwest Kidder Middle School Counselors, Mr. Blume and Mrs. Holbrook, are excited for the 2019-2020 school year. We provide academic, social, and emotional support to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.

Grief group is one of the available supports.

This is a group for students who have experienced recent loss. It meets during the school day once a week with focus on the grief process and coping skills, as well as, activities that allow the students to remember their loved ones. The counseling department also assists 7th and 8th grade students in completion of their Educational Development Plans (EDPs) which promotes planning of future career and college goals. There are several other career readiness activities the counseling department organizes including a trip to

the Career Center and a college and manufacturing visit. The Advisory program is also led by the counselors and administration to produce videos and lessons that engage the student body, promoting positive school climate. Two impactful service groups, the Force and Leo Clubs, are led by Mrs. Holbrook and Mr. Blume as well. These groups allow students an opportunity to serve and get involved. Guidance lessons that promote positive relationships and digital citizenship are on the docket for the fall, as well as, trauma groups supported by Family Service and Children’s Aid. We look forward to a fresh start this fall with an opportunity to help Northwest Kidder Middle School students achieve in great ways. We are Northwest, Go Mounties!

ARTDepartment Congratulations to Kimberly Snyder whose artwork was chosen to be in the Art a Loan program at Ella Sharp Museum. The public will be invited to a reception this fall, the date and location is to be announced.

Thank you to Margaret Wulf who donated basket making supplies. Sculpture students decided to wear them as a hat as we were about to take a picture to send to Mrs. Wulf, to thank her for her generosity.

A special thank you to the Drawing students who drew 20 portraits of orphans from Peru. The Memory Project sends us pictures, and our students draw one of the children. We send the pictures back to them with a picture of our artist and a handwritten note in their language of Spanish. The NWHS Art Department has completed portraits to date of orphans from around the world. Thank you for sharing your magnificent mountie talent with us.

Northwest High School News Hopefully you are all enjoying your summer!

We are looking forward to another great year here at Northwest High School.

The 2018-2019 school year was packed with many new and different adventures for us. We continue to build Scott Buchler our positive culture and Principal climate through our Positive Behaviors Interventions and Supports (PBIS) work and increasing our student and family supports. These in partnership with our growing academic programming are providing better opportunities for our students and their futures. We will continue to Amanda Anspaugh Assistant Principal work in these areas during the 2019-2020 school year.

This summer also brings about some growth in our high school staff. We will have four new staff members joining Mountie Nation in math, science, social studies and special education. We look forward in welcoming Phil Sczykutowicz our new staff and all of you Dean of Students back in August.

We are very excited with all the new improvements that have been going on over the summer. The completion of our heating and cooling in the building, in addition to our upgraded academic and athletic facilities are great opportunities to support our students, families, and staff.

As summer is winding down, be sure to be aware of the important dates of registration days, start days for athletics, open house and opening day of school.

Once again, thank you for your support and involvement in this great district! We look forward to our continued work together for the upcoming school year.

Bright Walls Mural Festival Returns to Jackson, September 5-10, 2019 Jeremiah Britton, NWHS Mountie, Class of 2006, with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Craig and Kimberly Britton, during the festival last October, 2018. AP COMPUTER SCIENCE AT NORTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL!!

This year, Northwest High School partnered with the Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS Program to offer computer science to our students!

We were able to offer AP Computer Science Principles to students in the 10th - 12th grade, with a chance to earn college credit through the AP program.

We had volunteers from the Computer Science field, including three college students majoring in Computer Science and Engineering, and the Information Systems Virtualization Engineer and Architect from Toyota! With the aid of a new remote class management program, Newrow, Mr. Panik was able to assist and talk with our students even when he was out of the country. It was a

new experience having our teaching assistant dialing in from Japan during class! All three assistants were available through Slack to answer questions outside of our class time as well when needed. In addition, Microsoft sponsored our class field trip to their Regional Headquarters office in Detroit, where we toured their state of the art facility as well as touring Quicken Loans building. They gave us a tour of downtown Detroit and showed us several of the buildings that Dan Gilbert’s businesses have already renovated, as well as showing us his concept for the future of downtown Detroit where they are starting several businesses with many Computer Science job openings!!! It has been an exciting year exploring this career field that is a driving force behind many exciting new career opportunities, and we are glad to provide our students with the opportunity to see what the future can hold for them.

New Student Registration Dates Parents of *New Students (new to the district) needing to register for fall enrollment should call the high school office at 517-817-4839 to schedule an appointment starting Monday, July 29, 2019 or 517-817-4820 starting Monday, August 5, 2019. Enrollment packets are available in the office. Online enrollment is also available at www.nwschools.org. Appointments are required for registering your new student.

College and Career Ready!

by Randi Watts College and Career Readiness Coordinator NWHS Northwest High School offers students many opportunities as they prepare to be college and career ready after four years in our building! It is important that students AND parents are informed of all the activities and requirements for graduation in preparation for post-secondary steps following high school. To help everyone stay informed, each class has a Google Classroom and Remind account where everything will be posted. In addition, we

Summer is a great time to look ahead and make a plan for your activities and education for your high school years. We have many opportunities that students may fit into their schedule that will help them pursue their individual interests. Remember, Freshman year grades count just as much as Senior year grades when it comes to calculating GPA, so start strong so you can finish strong! As credit requirements are met, students may find they have room in their schedule to earn college credit or job experience that can give them a head start on their future career! Some of these opportunities include: • Dual Enrollment-Students may take college classes and earn college credit at the same time as they are fulfilling high school graduation requirements (offered online and on local college campuses).

• Direct Credit-College classes offered at the high school where students earn college credit

will be launching a website later this summer where all events, deadlines, and activities will be posted to help our Mounties as they prepare for their future! The site will be active as school begins in the fall!

• Externship-A 2 trimester course, where students prepare a resume, practice interviewing, job shadow, and complete other preparation for their future careers.

After winter break, students will extern off campus at a business in their Career Pathway after completing a full interview experience with partner businesses in our area.

Students will complete OSHA training and have the opportunity to pursue other certifications per their career field as well.

• Career Center-Programs offered junior and senior year that are specifically aligned with career pathway interests. Students can attend Career Center for ½ day their junior and senior years and can earn industry specific certifications.

Seniors-Summer is an especially important time for you to prepare for your Senior Year! Make sure you see the detailed list that is posted on your Google Classroom. Many college applications are open, including the Common App, so you can start gathering your information for college applications! This is a good time for college campus visits as you finalize your top choices for your next steps following high school!

Review scholarship applications, note

deadlines, and update your “brag sheet” of high school accomplishments so you have the information readily available as you apply to colleges and scholarships. Also, write a rough draft of scholarship essays so you can get feedback from teachers in the fall, or stop by the College and Career Access Center in Jackson Crossing. Sydney Brown is our college and career advisor for Northwest High School, and she will be happy to help you with your resume, essays, and college applications over the summer! Remember, FAFSA forms will be available October 1st for parents and students to complete before any financial aid information can be received from colleges and vocational schools. This form can be found at https:// studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out and is free, so if you find yourself on a site that charges, you are on the wrong one! See Sydney or the counseling office at the high school if you have any questions. We will also be hosting lab nights at the high school this fall to offer help in filling out FAFSA and college application forms. These will be announced on Remind and posted on our website.

SPANISH NEWS During the third trimester, Spanish 4/5 students published a picture book for Señora Moulton’s classroom library. Students planned, wrote and illustrated the books using a free publishing kit provided by Studentreasures Publishing. Students first collaborated on the book theme and ideas before working individually on their pages. The title of their book is ¡Un viaje con el alfabeto! (A Trip with the Alphabet!). This is the second year that this class has done this book project and with the positive results, it will be an annual event.

Acquiring a second (or third) language is beneficial!

The study of world languages may: •● Improve ACT/SAT scores •● Increase your employment/college opportunities •● Help to enhance your English skills •● Sharpen your cognitive abilities •● Give you a new perspective on your own culture •● Help your understanding of foreign cultures •● Expand your options for study abroad and travel

In April, students in Señora Moulton’s Spanish classes began a lesson about Earth Day (El día de la tierra) and the importance of reducing pollution with an interactive activity. In small groups, students had to determine if items in a bag of common household items were biodegradable and how long they would take to biodegrade. Then students read an article in Spanish about the Great Pacific garbage patch, a “floating island” of ocean debris and pollution.

Here is a look at some of the Spanish class activities from last school year. Students were busy with listening, reading, speaking, and writing in Spanish. Storytelling in Spanish, reading stories, articles, and books in Spanish, plus listening to new music are just some of the ways students interact with the language!

Students who are college bound should keep in mind that language requirements vary for each college and university. Northwest students who have completed a serious study of Spanish during their high school careers are typically able to excel on the proficiency exam given by their college or university. This enables them to waive classes, earn credits, and place into more advanced college language classes. Confirm the details for language requirements and placement test information with the college admissions office.

El club de español

The Spanish Club “El club de español” is welcoming new members for the upcoming school year. During the first couple of meetings, students usually brainstorm ideas to plan future activities for the new school year. Club meeting activities and events over the past few years have included culturally related craft projects, dance lessons such as salsa and cumbia, “game” days, cooking and taste testing foods or recipes from Spanish speaking countries, watching

Spanish language movies, and learning new Spanish music. In addition, a variety of guest speakers (including NWHS graduates, exchange students, and other native speakers) have shared their experiences with the students. The activities are student inspired and offer a chance to use acquired Spanish, get to know other students in other grades, learn more about the Spanish culture outside of the regular classroom

setting, and have fun! In the fall, in addition to monthly meetings, students from Spanish Club sponsor a “trunk” at the district’s annual “Trunk ‘n Treat” event in October. Students who want to volunteer to hand out treats at our vehicle at the event should see Señora Moulton in the fall.

If students are interested in learning more about joining the Club, please see Señora Moulton or Señora Carroll at the HS, or Señora Klobuchar at KMS. Kidder Middle School students taking the Spanish 1 class for HS credit are also invited to attend. The meetings are held after

school in high school room 208, in Señora Moulton’s room. The group usually meets twice a month during the school year. QUARTICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION FOR THE SUSAN K. LORING CHAPTER OF NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY AT NORTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL By-Gen Marry The National Honor Society (NHS) raised $390 this year at the annual talent show held at Northwest High School which brings our total earnings to $5500 through the eight years NHS has sponsored this event. The profits went towards Shannon’s Helping Hand, a charity for cancer patients through Henry Ford Allegiance Health. Next year, we look to expand our show to include the entire district! We will be celebrating our 25th year as a school organization, and plan to have additional activities sponsored by members as well. We are looking forward to a great year!!!

The Be More Kind student group is welcoming new members for the upcoming school year. The goal of this high school group is to create and participate in activities and events that make students and staff feel welcome in

our school community. This is a student driven club - so all students are welcome to bring their ideas. The group believes that “Everyone can make a difference!”

selected and inducted November 13th, 2019. If you feel you are qualified but do not get a letter-please see Mrs. Watts!!! We are hoping to induct many new members during our 25th anniversary celebration!

NHS will be using a new online program, x2VOL, that students can use to log and track their service hours.

Nonprofit organizations can register for free on this site to post their volunteer needs, and students will be notified directly about potential opportunities.

2018-2019 National Honor Society Members

During the year, BMK members plan and initiate a variety of events and activities.

The Be More Kind program has several committees within it. For example, an Acts of Kindness committee works on designing ways for students and staff to be recognized for the kindness they show each day. Students also work to encourage their peers to become involved in after school events through a Super Fan program that rewards participation in clubs, as fans at events from band to choir to athletics and much more, as well as academic

accomplishments. A continuing project is sharing the information about the variety of groups and clubs available to students at the high school. The group has created a set of Google Slides and asked the high

school club advisors to compose a slide which explained the purpose of their group and how students can join. The slide deck is updated during the year and the slides are shown during lunch on the big screen in the cafetorium. Be More Kind group members also update a bulletin board featuring the clubs and activities.

During the past school year, BMK members initiated new activities such as a “Hot Cocoa Cart” (bringing free hot cocoa to a couple seminar classes each week) and a reduced price movie event.

Working on annual events such as the Hunger Bowl to support local area food banks and the Random Acts of Kindness week helps keep the momentum throughout the year. In the spring, Be More Kind members Claire Taylor, Micaiah Williams, and the club advisors

shared our accomplishments at the Youth Passing It Forward (Y-PIF) event in East Lansing. The annual event, sponsored by the ePIFanyNow™ organization, honors area youth making a difference.

The group was started several years ago by high school teachers Miss Marnie Hade and Mrs. Rebecca Moulton when the high school participated in “Be the Change” Challenge Day programs over a period of two years. The group continues the momentum of being positive and making a difference at NWHS---keeping the ideas of Be the Change, the Bully Movie Event Day, and Bystander Training going. Students are welcome to attend the meetings which are generally held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Interested students can watch for meeting announcements and see Miss Hade or Mrs. Moulton for more details.

Northwest Alternative High School News The Northwest Alternative High Jim Upright Director of Alternative School had an Programming amazing year.

There were many new opportunities for our students. Continuing to make meaningful connections with our community will support this trend. Partnerships that will continue and be expanded include the Michigan Construction Career Day, Michigan Works, Family Services & Children’s Aid, NW High School, and the Jackson Area Career Center.

These partnerships along with additional trauma training for our teachers and staff make NWAHS a safe setting for learning and will help develop a positive culture that provides our students with a solid plan after graduation.

One of the most exciting days of this year was when we took 20 of our students to the Michigan Construction Career Day. This event was all about the skill trades and the amazing opportunities that are available right now. Students were able to operate excavators, cranes, boom trucks, rollers, backhoes, and bulldozers!!! Actual union members were there to guide our students and explain what a career in the skilled trades has to offer. Because of this trip, our students became excited about their education and had a goal to enter a career in the skilled trades.

One of our graduates is starting their career in the skilled trades; who wouldn’t want to drive a bulldozer!

Continuing with the idea of creating a solid plan for after graduation is why we have partnered with Michigan Works. This partnership brings a Michigan Works teacher into our building everyday. This will be a scheduled class for our juniors and seniors, exposing these students to entry level work world expectations covering resumes, cover letters, soft skills, mock interviews,

and other work related topics. Basic living skills like insurance, household budgets, rent, mortgages, and retirement will also be covered. The goal of the MI Works program is to make connections with the community for our graduates to be gainfully employed upon graduation. The program ensures that our students are ready through virtual job shadowing, actual job shadowing, possible summer employment, and externships.

This is an exciting program that will set our students up to be successful and sought after in the work world marketplace.

Teenage years are tough and many of our students have suffered some kind of significant trauma. This simply means that they have lived 25 years of life in the 15 or 17 years that they have been alive. This shows in how students cope with their social and emotional traumas. Helping and guiding students through this time takes some specific skills. This is why NWAHS will continue the partnership with Family Services & Children’s Aid. This program offers individual, as well as, group counseling.

Students are excused from class for their sessions that are right here at our school.

Through this program we see attendance and grades increase from these additional supports. Continuing and expanding this program is a priority in the 2019-2020 school year.

Partnering with parents is the key to success! As the NWAHS is continually trained in educating students that have been through social and emotional trauma, it has become very evident that the more parental involvement there is the better the student will do. This is why next year we will be creating a parent group. Including parents will provide NWAHS with insight in how to best help all of our students. The partnership of parents, trauma trained teachers, and

motivated students will help ensure success!

A very unique part of NWAHS is a partnership with Northwest High School.

This partnership allows NWAHS students to take classes at NWHS and the Jackson Area Career Center. This is a great opportunity for NWAHS students to have additional, meaningful experiences. Another unique part of this partnership is NWAHS students have the ability to transfer back to NWHS. This is a process and there are guidelines. In the past two years approximately seven students have moved back to NWHS. Most students that think they want to transfer back choose on their own to stay! We appreciate the partnership with NWHS and we are very thankful for their support and additional opportunities that are provided.

We are excited about all of the opportunities that we will be able to offer our students next year. The partnerships, new and old are a valuable part of creating a positive learning environment that respects students' past life experiences. Experiences like the Career Construction Day and the partnership with Michigan Works will prepare our students for their future careers.

Our partnership with Family Services & Children’s Aid and parents will ensure positive social and emotional health for our students. Our relationship with NWHS and the Jackson Area Career Center provides vocational training with the skills students need to develop a solid career goal and have the skills to reach their goal.

Our students and staff have worked vigorously over the past year implementing Positive Behaviors Interventions & Supports (PBIS) on the bus and it has come with great success. Effective communication of bus expectations play a huge role in these efforts and students now have the tools needed to have a safe, responsible, and respectful bus ride.

In order to provide safe transportation and continue to build communication within our community, I have included some regulations and best practices we have as a transportation department. These include Federal, State and/ or local law, school board policies, or Dean Transportation operating procedures for school bus operations.

BUS STOPS: • During the first few weeks of operation, we would like parents to be aware that bus schedules will most likely vary until students, parents, and drivers become accustomed to the route. We currently operate 21 buses on regular morning and afternoon routes. Our drivers meet and/ or exceed all state requirements for school bus drivers and have one of the most difficult jobs in the school system. Please work with them

BAGGAGE / BACKPACKS / BOOK BAGS/ ETC.: • A regulation for school buses clarifies how baggage, including book bags, projects or equipment, etc., are to be transported. Unless the item will and can be held by the student on their lap, it will not allowed on the bus. Any large projects, band instruments, fund raising items, or any sport gear, etc., that will not fit on a student's lap safely must be transported by other means.

• Parents and students are notified of bus stop locations by US mail near the middle of August. These times are currently the best estimate and they are subject to change due to routing changes, traffic, and/or construction. Please monitor the pickup and drop-off times closely as route times will adjust slightly every time a student is dropped or added to the run the first few weeks of school. Notice is only sent to parents when the route will change by more than 10 minutes.

LIMITATIONS • Each student may have one morning bus stop and one afternoon bus stop (may be different than the morning stop). Parents with split custody situations can each have one morning and one afternoon stop.

• Bus passes will not be accepted. Students are only allowed to ride a bus they have been assigned.

SAFETY/EFFICIENCY OF ROUTES/STOPS • Where possible, bus routes are scheduled for main roads, except where needed for routing efficiency.

• Buses shall not enter cul-de-sacs unless required for a special education student by their individual education plan.

• Consistent pickup and drop-off locations are required. There may be a different pickup location than drop-off, but each must be the same every day.

• Bus stops shall be permanent, allowing the community and regular traffic to become familiar with bus stops.

Foodservice Department News We are pleased to inform you that all students enrolled at Northwest Community Schools will continue to participate in the option available to schools as part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program called Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for the 2019-2020 school year.

ALL students enrolled at Northwest Community Schools are eligible to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at school at NO CHARGE to your household, each day of the 2019-2020 school year.

We will be asking that you fill out and sign the Household Information Survey, which will be used for administrative purposes, not to determine eligibility. Surveys will be sent home with students and will be available online prior to the beginning of school. REMINDER: Each household must fill out a survey.

The survey allows our school to benefit from various State and Federal supplemental programs like Title I A, At Risk (31a), and Title II A, E-Rate, etc.; this is critical in determining the amount of funding the school receives from a variety of supplemental programs. All information on the survey submitted is confidential. Without your assistance, the school cannot maximize utilization of available State and Federal funds.
