Greetings Mountie Nation!

Welcome back to the 2016-2017 school year! I am so excited about the future of Northwest Community Schools! It has been our goal to embrace our community with the Mountie spirit. The pages that follow in this Newsletter will share what is happening here in our school district as well as information for the start of the school year.

Efficiently communicating with parents and the community is one of our primary goals as a district. We hope that we will be able to accomplish this through several avenues; this newsletter, the district website www.nwschools.org, the NW Facebook page, Twitter #mountienationnw, building newsletters, District robo-calls, email blasts and district signage. Our hashtag for this year for all social media is #mountienation1617.

It is our hope that our school district is a part of your daily source of information. After many retirements we have hired 19 new teachers. We know what makes a school district great is having high expertise in each and every classroom. Our leadership team has taken this hiring opportunity very seriously, and in turn, we have been able to bring additional professional excellence to the Mountie Nation.

As always, the foundation of Northwest Community Schools still remains rock solid: a positive, nurturing culture that ensures the highest quality of learning.

Notice: Pest Management

Northwest Community Schools has adopted an Integrated Pest Management program. Inherent with this are the District’s efforts to reduce pesticide use as much as possible.

While it may occasionally be necessary to apply a pesticide, these will only be used as a last resort.

This program does not rely on routine pesticide applications to resolve problems. We use various techniques such as habitat alteration, sanitation, mechanical means, exclusion, etc., to prevent pests from becoming a problem.

NORTHWEST COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER Hours: 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday

The Northwest Community Health Center operated by the Center for Family Health opened at Kidder Middle School on September 16, 2013. In the past year, more than 1,200 people have received services. The health center is open to all kids and adolescents who are 21 years old or younger. The health center operates like a doctor’s office providing the following services:

• Physicals/Well Checks • Immunizations • Sick Visits • Counseling • Medicaid Enrollment The health center is convenient for parents. Students who attend KMS, Northwest High, or Northwest Alternative may use the health center without an adult present if their parent or guardian has given permission.

It is open all year round.

You will receive advanced notice of the application of a pesticide other than bait or gel formulations at your child’s school. This advance notice of the application will be given 49 hours before the application. The law requires us to do this notification by using two methods.

• The first method required by law is the posting at the primary entrances to your child’s school. The entrances that will be posted are those entrances that have a sidewalk that leads directly to parking lots.

• The second method we will use is the posting in a common area located by the main office of the school.

Parents are also entitled to receive this notice by first-class United States mail postmarked at least 3 days before the application. If you would like to be notified by mail please contact the Facilities Department at the following number: (517)817-4730. Please give the Facilities secretary your name, mailing address and which school your child attends.

In an emergency (for example, bees nest), pesticides may be applied without prior notice, but you will be provided notice following any such application.

You may review our IPM program or pesticide application records for your child’s school by calling or e-mailing Mick Evans, Facilities Supervisor, at (517)817-4730 or e-mail address Michael.Evans@nwschools.org. This number or e-mail address may also be used when school is not in regular session.

Mountie Pride – in Rio! Grace Latz, a 2006 Northwest High School Graduate, will be competing on the United States Women’s Rowing Team, in the Quadruple Sculls.

Grace walked onto the University of Wisconsin’s rowing team as a freshman. She was awarded an athletic scholarship the following year. Grace helped Wisconsin win the Big 10 Championship and also won Big 10 Championships in individual boat classes. She earned a gold medal at the World Championships in France last year, and a bronze medal at the World Championships in the Netherlands, the year before.

Since graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Grace has trained for the past three years at the National Team Training Center in Princeton, New Jersey…..to compete in this year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

A celebratory open house will be held on September 10th…..details to follow.

Homeless Act Provides for Students in Need In these tough economic times, the needs of our school community are greater than ever.

The passage of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act allows us to provide assistance to families and students dealing with homelessness.

This assistance could be in the form of transportation to and from school, free meals, academic help, field trip and other school fees paid, and so on.

A student is considered homeless if one of the following categories is met:

• Living on the street or in a car or abandoned building, etc.

• Living in a shelter such as Inter-Faith or AWARE. • Children placed in foster care are considered homeless for the first 6 months they are in the system.

• Doubling up -- Children and immediate family who have moved in with another family or relative.

• Hotel, Motel -- people who live in welfare sponsored rooms or rooms in hotels/motels.

If you know of a family that might qualify according to these guidelines, please contact your school counselor.

Families and students in need should be aware of governmental support for the advancement of a student’s education through an initiative referred to as the McKinney-Vento Act. Any student who has had their living situation disrupted or strained might find financial assistance through this governmental program developed for assisting students in completing school. Students qualify if they and their family live with another family; or if they themselves live with another family; or if they are living with an extended family member due to financial considerations. Basic needs for assisting students in the task of attending school are areas where assistance might be granted: Summer school; additional course requirements; field trip costs; and even food and gas (as appropriate) are areas where support may be provided.

NORTHWEST ChiLdcArE Summer 2016 was a huge success for our little Mounties! Our infants and toddlers experienced some fun summer themes! The favorite theme of the summer was water fun! The infants and toddlers got to explore and play in the water. They all had a blast splashing in the water and running through the sprinkler!

Our childcare kids also experienced some fun summer weekly themes! The favorite theme of the summer was Rainbow Week! The kids got the opportunity to explore rainbows doing spray art and tear art activities! The childcare kids also got to enjoy weekly field trips. The summer childcare kids sported their red Northwest t-shirts and visited Michigan Theater, Jackson District Library, Blackman-Leoni Public Safety, Kids N Stuff, Dahlem Center and Swiss Treat to name a few. The kids also got to participate in science Thursdays with Miss Cathy (Cathy Hickey). Miss Cathy is a science teacher from Northwest High School who did some neat science projects with the kids such as volcanoes, tornado bottles and UV bracelets. The kids had a blast with these hands on science experiments! Thank you Miss Cathy for your all you do for Northwest Childcare! On the very last day of summer childcare, the kids had a pajama party and enjoyed a movie at the high school cafertorium with an ice cream sundae bar! What a great summer at Northwest Childcare! All of the Little Mounties and our terrific Northwest Childcare staff had an awesome summer and look forward to an exciting 2016-2017 school year!

Northwest Early Elementary School – Lorri LM McAlpine, Principal

There is nothing busier than little ones who have enormous amounts of curiosity and imagination. This is one of the wonderful things about working at the Early Elementary building. Yet, too often we might expect less because of the age of the student. This is where curious and imaginative teachers come in...

School-wide Title 1 at Northwest Early Elementary School What is Title I? Title I is the largest federal assistance program for our nation’s schools to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.

Title I Program Our School is a School-Wide Title I funded school. This means that we receive money from the Federal Government.

Things Title I schools must do:

…

• Develop a School Improvement Plan (SIP) • Analyze data and utilize funds to maximize student achievement • Involve parents in decision making • Ask for opinions from parents and community • Create a School/Parent Compact • Create a Parent Involvement Policy

Let me give you an example. Teaching our students is about academics but it is also about learning to care for others.

We have many ways to involve our students in helping others.

One amazing way was our Sweets for Soldiers that we do before Christmas. The students collected hard candy, counted it, dragged it (literally in some cases!) down to the cafeteria, and handed it over to the gracious retired service men that packed it into mailing boxes. The students might have had to pick up spilled candy during their long walk, but it was an important job and it was completed with pride. Watching the students and service men interact was priceless because the warmth exuded was contagious.

Now, what did I learn? When the children were involved, with the support of their parents, they learned how to take responsibility to look out for others by helping them. They had a purpose for collecting the candy and knew that they were helping others. And of course there were ways that the teachers included academics with many connected activities such as counting the total pieces of candy, making estimates of how much candy they collected, and problem-solving on how to get the load of candy to the cafeteria.

I look forward to this school year to see how many ways we can involve students in various activities that are also conducive to the culture of caring that emanates from our staf f and families. There will always be the academic component; additionally, there will always be a way to involve our students to help them learn.

My challenge - please be involved as a parent. Join your classroom/school social media to see the many ways that your child is involved on a daily basis. Attend conferences and our parent nights. Come in and visit the classroom whether to help out or to attend special classroom events.

I look forward to the 2016-17 school year – a year full of involvement so that we ALL can learn!

At Northwest Early Elementary, we have a comprehensive program that works with students that are Title I eligible. The program provides extra support for reading, writing, math, and other content areas. We have Learning Specialists that are former classroom teachers that have specialized literacy training. Our Learning Specialists at Northwest Early Elementary are Amy Locke, Kindergarten; Jeanne Bontrager, First Grade; and Kristen Joseph, Second Grade. Our Learning Specialists are supported

by Literacy Aides at each grade level. Our Title I program also provides after-school and summer programs when possible. We are fortunate to have this program to provide interventions for students that need the extra support.

Northwest Early Elementary is fortunate enough to have Energizing Education for its K-2 students.

We started in November 2014 and continue to grow each and every month. Our mentors come from all walks of life, from retired to working at newspapers, realty offices, former teachers, an author and business professionals.

Mentors work with students on literacy skills to boost their reading level. If you or someone you know is interested in more information regarding Energizing Education please contact Charlie at 517-990-6070 or cmiller@uwjackson.org Energizing Education is a successful mentoring program that allows our district to provide a family night every month for our K-2 Families. We are extremely thankful to EE, United Way and to the multitude of volunteers that come to help us each month. Our volunteers are our teachers, mentors and our high school students. Thank you to everyone and remember, because of your help we can continue to do these fun nights.

This online program provides a comprehensive, Common Core aligned curriculum for all students. Teachers can individualize lessons for each student assisting in success and improvement at all levels. As part of our MTSS (intervention model), Moby Max will be a way for teachers to observe progress of students in real time and assist in monitoring progress. They can see exactly how students are doing. Student results and progress can be seen through graphs and reports to help drive instruction.

Greetings Mounties!

The 2016-17 School year is just around the corner! I know this for two reasons, the calendar on my desk and the school supplies that are showing up in the stores! We are extremely fortunate and excited to start this new year with our NWEL family and the Mountie Nation. We are growing in numbers and honored with the amount of trust this community has placed in us to educate and love your children.

Vision is fascinating! When you have it, it’s wonderful, when you don’t it’s painful, hurtful and disorienting. This is true of the vision that is metaphorical as well. There are thoughts, disciplines and words that can protect vision. They are difficult to use at times. They are like wearing safety glasses!

I am always grateful that I utilized them when the sparks are flying.

This year at NWEL we are excited about our renewed focus on vision for our school. This vision includes parents, students and community members in the Mountie Nation.

We are growing by leaps and bounds and we need your help! As a staff, we at NWEL, will be focusing our efforts in three major areas this year: Programming, Discipline and Communication. Those areas are very specific to what we do every day at NWEL. The community can share in our vision by doing similar tasks in these areas. Here is what it might look like for you at home:

They can chart how long it takes to get groceries, or how many times you get gas in a week, the amount of times you mow the lawn, the loads of laundry completed in a week etc.

Discipline: Ask your child to exercise self-control independently. They can play with the neighbors without arguing. They can allow someone else to have the last scoop of ice cream from the freezer. They can do an extra chore without being asked.

New Middle School Record Congratulations to Henly Sleight, on shattering the middle school high jump record this past spring with a jump of 5’ 3”.

Amanda Curtis held the previous record at 4’ 11” set back in 2005. Henly’s jump ranks her 1st in Michigan and tied for 8th in the entire USA for middle school track and field, based on Athletic.net.

6th Grade Beginning Band at Kidder Middle School It’s not too late to be a part of the band program at Northwest!

If you are interested in starting your child in band in 6th grade and you have not already signed up, please contact the KMS guidance office at 817-4669. Students may start on flutes, clarinets, trumpets or trombones.

If your student will be starting band at Kidder Middle School this year, please remember that ALL students will need an instrument in good working condition and the Essential Elements Book 1 for their instrument. Instrument rentals are available through Quinlan and Fabish Music Company at qandf.com or by calling 1-800-637-6872. All instruments rented through Quinlan and Fabish will be delivered to the school and will be waiting for your student on the first day of school. Run-for-Fun After Girl’s participating: Abbie Sczykutowicz School Group This past spring several KMS 6th grade girls participated in the Run-For-Fun After School Group.

Mrs. Silvey, Mrs. Beer, and Mrs. Delbridge met with the girl’s on Monday’s and Thursday’s setting goals of increasing fitness levels, having fun, encouraging others, gaining confidence, and participating in the Mounties on the Move 5K. The coaches would like to recognize the girls for their hard work and for some the courage to try something new!

When Wayne Maynard said he was going to use a fish tank theme for his mobile, he meant it. Wayne arrived at school with his finished mobile complete with a real fish bowl and goldfish.

Clarinetist Selected for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival Every year, the best musicians in the state gather at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival. Due to her outstanding performance at MSBOA State Solo and Ensemble in March, senior clarinetist Abby Becraft was invited to play in the MYAF Honor Band.

This group rehearsed and performed under the baton of Professor John T. Madden from MSU.

With turning of the seasons to autumn comes one of Northwest’s greatest and most-grand traditions: the Marching Mounties.

The 2016 Marching Mounties began rehearsals on August 1st in preparation for a season that will both keep the high tradition of excellence and propel the band to new heights of performance.

NWHS Connects with NWEE and NWE

Classrooms from NWHS, NWEE, and NWE participated in a special activity to end the school year of 2015-16. The students from Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Osterberg, Mrs. McIntosh, and Mrs. Kennedy were able to extend their learning from the classroom to the halls of NWHS. Students from Mrs. Jones’ and Mrs. Osterberg’s classrooms helped their elementary friends participate in a scavenger hunt at the high school. The younger students were able to become more familiar with the secondary building, see the new additions, and help prepare for the transition to the high school one day. Our older students were able to “lead the way” for the younger students while helping them get excited about their future as a high school student. Once returning back to the classroom, the students had a snack and watched a movie, providing an opportunity to socialize and enjoy a leisure activity. Everyone benefits when collaboration takes place between younger and older students within the district. It’s just one more example of Mountie Nation moving in the“direction of greatness!” A BIG thank you to all students, teachers, and paraprofessionals who helped make this activity a success.

Creating Memories These students participated in the Memory Portrait Project, Samantha Wilcox, Mackenzie Deladurantaye, Paige McGaugh, Amber Schaff and Akeem Henning. NWHS students receive a photo of a child from another country who is orphaned and/or impoverished. We draw a portrait from the picture and send it back to them with a small picture of the artist. To date, NWHS students have drawn portraits for students from Madagascar, Paraguay, Thailand, India and now Peru. Thank you for drawing pictures of young people from Peru and sharing your magnificent Mountie talent with them.

March is The High School celebrated “March is Reading Month” in the spring with a variety of theme days and activities designed to promote reading and encourage discussion about books and reading. Students and staff shared their reading preferences, genre interests and favorite books on mini-posters which were displayed in the hall near each teacher’s classroom door. A colorful display of book covers in one of the showcases featured teachers’ favorite books, series, or authors. Each Thursday in March students and staff dressed in the week’s theme such as “Read Your Apparel Day” and “Neon Day--Reading Makes You Brighter.” Students and staff could enter a drawing to win an Amazon gift certificate by posting a “shelfie” on Twitter. A “shelfie” is a photo of someone holding a favorite book or current read. Throughout the month, an annual Book Donation Drive was available for students and staff to donate used books and to take them as well.

To continue the reading promotion over the summer, staff from Jackson District Library visited our media center to give a presentation on their “Summer Reading Program” throughout the day to students and staff.

Congratulations to the Northwest High School Mountie Nation Station staff for earning a national Gold Award (one of five schools in the country) for their website and its content through the ESE Networks competition. Many of the students on the Mountie Nation Station’s staff also earned awards at the state level through the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association’s annual statewide competition (MIPA).

The Mountie Nation Station will be entering its third full year as a program during the 2016-17 school year.

Northwest Community Schools

El club de español Students who are interested in the Spanish language are invited to attend the Spanish Club “El club de español.” The meetings are held after school in room 208, in Señora Moulton’s room.

All students who have an interest in the Spanish language and culture are welcome to join. The group usually meets once or twice a month during the school year. During the first meeting, students discuss what kinds of activities they’d like to do throughout the year. In late October, the Club traditionally sponsors a “trunk” at the annual “Trunk n Treat” at the elementary campus. Please watch for more details on participating in that event and for the date of our meetings on the announcements.

The activities are student inspired and offer a chance to practice Spanish, get to know other students in other grades, learn more about the Spanish culture outside of the regular classroom setting, and have fun! In the past some of the club activities have included “game” days (playing board games in Spanish like Scrabble, Hang Man, and Pictionary), craft days (making mini piñatas, weaving god’s eyes), making and tasting delicious food with a recipe from a Spanish speaking country, dance lessons, watching movies in Spanish, going to one of the local Mexican restaurants, and having guest speakers such as foreign exchange students or NW graduates.

On a day in May, students in Señora Moulton’s classes welcomed a guest speaker into their classroom. Dr. Gary Dawson is the Director of Environmental Policy– Land and Water Management-- Environmental Services with Consumers Energy. When he was a graduate student at Michigan State University, Dr. Dawson traveled and spent time in Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama, and Mexico. During this time, he worked with other biologists doing research and field work. His ability to speak the Spanish language was a great asset to his work and travels. During his presentation he showed photographs from his time in those countries.

Dr. Dawson also spoke with students about his education and career journey.

MSU World Language Day On a Saturday in April, a group of Northwest High School Spanish students attended World Language Day on the campus of Michigan State University. NWHS students Gabe Arthur, Phoebe Callebs, John McCarthy, Brittney Fleming, and Señora Moulton attended this 9th annual Language Day conference. The day-long event features a wide variety of sessions on topics relating to languages, cultures, travel, foods, and careers. It is an opportunity for students to experience non-traditional languages, explore different cultures, learn more about the languages that they are studying, and meet other language students from all around lower Michigan.

Señora Moulton appreciates the fact that the event is free to the students. She said that the students that devote a Saturday are rewarded with a great conference experience. Every year the students have a wonderful time with the wide variety of sessions.

The feedback from NWHS student attendees has always been positive; they enjoy everything --the classes, the food, the dancing, the people, and the chance to see the university campus. For more information or to sign up for the annual spring conference please see Señora Moulton.

iChallengeU Program with Northwest 2016!

The iChallengeU Program was going strong this summer and concluded with the Final Presentation Event at Jackson College on July 22nd. This program involves students and mentor/teachers in a two-week venture with a local business partner to help tackle a driving question with solutions created by the student consultants. Local area schools including Northwest High School asked junior and senior students to join a team ranging from two to six students paired with one mentor/teacher to meet and work full-time on-site at area businesses. Their work is to provide answers or solutions to a question posed by the business partner. On the last day of the two-week session, students converged on Jackson College to present their business and strategic plans with highlighted products and features to a panel of five judges made up of area business and college professionals. After a ten minute presentation, student teams participate in a Question and Answer forum at the judges’ discretion. Criteria for judging included

50 points in the Presentation, 30 points in the Resolution, and the final 20 points for Question and Answer categories for a maximum score per judge of 100 points.

Mentor/Teachers from Northwest included Julie Evers-Dodge with the team from Orbitform, Michelle VandyBogurt with the team from Michigan Works! Southeast, and Marnie Hade with the Broadcasting Team from Northwest High School. Students on the Communication Arts team include: (Broadcasting) Kennedy Wait, Devyn Garner, Zachary Newhouse, Kyle James, Austin Coplen, and (Graphic Design) Abbey Ferguson. Comments from return students and mentor/teachers as well as business partners were all extremely positive about the Broadcasting Team’s professionalism at the local businesses for taping segments, the high quality of the videotaped materials and pictures, and the ease with which the team handled interviewing nervous students and adults alike. The team created an iChallengeU Youtube channel that houses all of

Don’t forget to get involved this year! Want to be part of a team and win medals, recognition, and confidence? Science Olympiad might be for you. Students can choose several of the 23 events in which to compete. There are categories which require the “building” or creating of something physical, and there are events that require memorization, knowledge, and research.

Students will compete in events anywhere from building a gadget, to creating a video game.

Students may also choose to learn the star patterns and identify stars, nebulas, and other astronomy facts, or they may be required to help in solving a crime in forensics. Whatever the interest, Science Olympiad has something for every student.

Teamwork is a required skill in most scientific careers today, and Science Olympiad encourages group learning by designing events that forge alliances.

A terrific learning and growth opportunity for students and adults alike, students earned two credits at Jackson College and a third credit when they attend and sign up for the credit for participation in the program and had the chance to compete with the Final Presentation for an additional $1000 scholarship from Baker College, Eastern Michigan University, Siena Heights University, and Spring Arbor College. The scholarship through Siena Heights University was for $1000 for each of four years for attending as well.

What is an Alternative High School Student?

Well, as a person who has taught at Northwest Alternative HS for the last 24 years, I think I have a pretty good handle on what a “typical” alternative student looks like. While no one student is the same as another, they seem to share many of the same characteristics and qualities of each other. Here are some pretty common traits that I’ve noticed about my students.

•

• My students seem to enjoy smaller class sizes, and an overall smaller school.

• These students often see the “glass as half empty” instead of being half full. What I mean about that is, they tend to dwell on the negative, and often let things that others would quickly shake off affect them for long periods of time.

• These students often need more encouragement and guidance on a daily basis to complete tasks and be successful.

•

•

Students sometimes have a hard time getting up in the morning, essentially are not “morning people,” and may be more productive later in the day, or even at night.

Students often have instability in their living situations, and live with other family members, friends, couch-surf every night, and sometimes are even homeless.

• Most of my students have fallen behind in credits due to a variety of reasons.

These reasons can be due to: + Personal issues that seem to be on-going, prolonged, and often serious or even devastating + Medical issues that are often chronic, debilitating, and are either personal or affecting a close family member

+ Anxiety and/or fear of school, failure, other students, past experiences with being bullied, and a general distrust of school in general

+ Family obligations require them to help out at home, either caring emotionally, or even financially, for other family members. Parents often look to these children to “step up” and manage tasks other families would never think to ask their kids to do + Attendance, or more bluntly put, lack of attendance. Chronic absences, often noted since elementary school, often plague these students. Again, see the reasons above for the student usually not coming to school • These students often need more time. Time to process an assignment. To work on the assignment. To actually complete the assignment.

• Many of my students are masters of avoidance. They have learned to avoid anything unpleasant, difficult, and not readily understood. They often flounder with delayed gratification.

Looking ahead to the future is not something these students are used to doing-in fact, their own graduation is not a “given,” it is often viewed as some vague, distant pipe-dream. Many alternative students have family members who have never completed school, and don’t understand the commitment of getting an education.

•

They are often very bright, but sometimes are not very motivated. They often know every single answer, but don’t bother to write it down. They often don’t see the point. On the flip side, I’ve seen perfectionists who can’t get started, because they don’t want a single thing to be “wrong.”

•

Sometimes these students have a hard time hearing the word “no.” They will often argue when given an answer they don’t want, and have a tendency to “shut down” when something doesn’t “go their way.” Some kids are never told “no” at home, and therefore, don’t do well when hearing it at school for perhaps the first time.

•

These students are often very resilient! Many of our students have seen and experienced some pretty difficult things in their life. They are survivors, and often have sympathy and empathy for others. They need someone to believe in them and guide them to their full potential.

Former student, Karmen Platt, has this to say: “Paying attention and getting a degree is a heck of a lot cooler than pretending you don’t care. Trust me on this.

• You may think the staff doesn’t notice you or pay attention to you, but they see more than you think and know more than you can imagine.

• Let them help you; that’s what they’re there for, and they so badly want to.

• EVERYONE has problems, and most everyone at the Alternative has a rough home life. If you give them the chance, they’ll get your back, help you, and watch out for you.”

She continues with this advice. “You WILL regret it if you don’t finish (school).

Maybe not today, or next week, or next year, but one day you’ll look back and wish you had tried harder.”

If you know someone like this, they just may benefit from our Alternative HS. Never judging. Just caring. And helping each student be the best they can be.

• I may have the opportunity to take classes at Northwest High School

• I will be on the same schedule/calendar as the regular high school

• I will have a combination of traditional and on-line (E-2020) classes

• I may get additional, non-traditional opportunities to earn credits for graduation

• I may be offered “flexible” scheduling, with “second shift” as an option

• Daily: Larger servings of fruits and vegetables (students must take one serving) • Weekly: 3/4 cup orange or red vegetable, and • At least 1/2 cup of each: dark green vegetable, starchy vegetable (green peas, corn, white potatoes), dried beans/legumes • All grains must be whole grain • Limit total amounts of meat/meat alternatives and grain portions • Milk offerings: Limited to 1% or fat free • Minimum and maximum calorie levels based upon age • Other Standards: trans fat free, low in saturated fat and less sodium over the next 9 years

Taher’s Food4Life menu offerings incorporate the following: • Chef-developed, made-from-scratch items, including trans-fat free.

• A Fruit and Vegetable Bar as part of the daily menu offerings with a selection of fresh vegetables and fresh or canned fruit; rainbow-focused menu choices, including dark green and orange vegetables, and legumes.

• Harvest of the Month program that features a specific fruit, vegetable, and grain or legume each month, along with educational flyers.

• Taste-testing of new food items, allowing students to become familiar with them before they are on the menu.

Students are required to have 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetable on their tray for it to count as a full meal. Anything less than a full meal will be charged as individual items.

We offer a variety of fruits and vegetables daily to give students more options, in the hopes that choosing fruits and vegetables will be easy for students.

How can you help?

The school nutrition program needs the support of parents to succeed! Parents can support this effort by encouraging your child to give the healthier meals a try, joining your child for lunch and talking about the healthy options, or simply introducing your child to these healthy changes at home.

You are your child’s primary role model, when they see you choose healthy foods they are more likely to choose them as well.

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Children need healthy meals to learn. Northwest Community Schools offers healthy meals every school day. Breakfast costs $1.75; lunch cost at High School and Middle School are $2.85 and at Northwest Elementary and Northwest Early Elementary $2.60. Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced price meals.

Reduced price is $.30 for breakfast and $.40 for lunch. This packet includes an application for free or reduced price meal benefits, and a set of detailed instructions. Below are some common questions and answers to help you with the application process.

1. WHO CAN GET FREE OR REDUCED PRICE MEALS? • All children in households receiving benefits from Food Assistance Program (FAP), Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)] or Family Independence Program (FIP), are eligible for free meals.

• Foster children that are under the legal responsibility of a foster care agency or court are eligible for free meals.

• Children participating in their school’s Head Start program are eligible for free meals.

• Children who meet the definition of homeless, runaway, or migrant are eligible for free meals.

• Children may receive free or reduced price meals if your household’s income is within the limits on the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines.

Your children may qualify for free or reduced price meals if your household income falls at or below the limits on this chart.

2. HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILDREN QUALIFY AS HOMELESS, MIGRANT, OR RUNAWAY? Do the members of your household lack a permanent address? Are you staying together in a shelter, hotel, or other temporary housing arrangement? Does your family relocate on a seasonal basis? Are any children living with you who have chosen to leave their prior family or household?

12. WHAT IF MY INCOME IS NOT ALWAYS THE SAME? List the amount that you normally receive. For example, if you normally make $1000 each month, but you missed some work last month and only made $900, put down that you made $1000 per month. If you normally get overtime, include it, but do not include it if you only work overtime sometimes. If you have lost a job or had your hours or wages reduced, use your current income.

WHAT IF SOME HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS HAVE NO INCOME TO REPORT? Household members may not receive some types of income we ask you to report on the application, or may not receive income at all. Whenever this happens, please write a 0 in the field. However, if any income fields are left empty or blank, those will also be counted as zeroes. Please be careful when leaving income fields blank, as we will assume you meant to do so.

14. WE ARE IN THE MILITARY, DO WE REPORT OUR INCOME DIFFERENTLY? Your basic pay and cash bonuses must be reported as income. If you get any cash value allowances for off-base housing, food, or clothing, it must also be included as income. However, if your housing is part of the Military Housing Privatization Initiative, do not include your housing allowance as income. Any additional combat pay resulting from deployment is also excluded from income.

15. WHAT IF THERE ISN’T ENOUGH SPACE ON THE APPLICATION FOR MY FAMILY? List any additional household members on a separate piece of paper, and attach it to your application.
