Greetings Mountie Nation!

Happy Holidays! This is has been an excellent start to the 17-18 school year. There are so many exciting happenings here, and this newsletter will share much of what we are up to. As a board of education we have been busy gathering input from the community about the state of our facilities. We have been so grateful for all that we have been able to accomplish with the passing of the 2013 bond.

Here a just a few highlights: • New 1,000 seat cafetorium and new auxiliary gym Geoff Bontrager Ed.S. Superintendent • District-wide new secure main entries • High School-new high efficiency boilers, corridor ceilings, heating units, heating pumps and piping, temperature controls, water heater, water pumps • High School and Middle School-upgrades to fire alarm, emergency lighting, electrical, mechanical • District-wide roof work • District-wide logo/signage improvements • District-wide tile and pipe fitting abatements • Middle School-new air handling units, corridor ceilings, heating units, heating pumps and piping, temperature controls, water heater, water pumps, etc… Upgrades to fire alarm, emergency lighting, electrical, mechanical • Northwest Elementary School-chiller restoration (A/C) and new high efficiency boilers, heating pumps and piping, water pumps; upgrades to fire alarm, emergency lighting, electrical, mechanical • Early Elementary School-built and furnished the new NW Early Elementary School-demolished old building • At the Education Center-new secure main entry

for additional updates to get us to a level that we should be able to maintain for years to come. The following are areas that we are concerned about and need attention:

This fall, I visited 16 community meeting venues to gather input about how we should proceed with addressing these needs. We have posted a survey on our website and social media to continue to gather input from the community.

As a result of this survey, our Board of Education has responded by voting a resolution on November 13th to move forth with offering our community the opportunity to pass a small bond of 1.9 Mills this May. This would allow us to address all the above needs and still keep Northwest Community Schools below four of the six surrounding school districts in Mills levied.

Homeless Act Provides for Students in Need

In these tough economic times, the needs of our school community are greater than ever. The passage of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act allows us to provide assistance to families and students dealing with homelessness. This assistance could be in the form of transportation to and from school, free meals, academic help, field trip and other school fees paid, and so on.

A student is considered homeless if one of the following categories is met: • Living on the street or in a car or abandoned building, etc.

• Living in a shelter such as Inter-Faith or AWARE. • Children placed in foster care are considered homeless for the first 6 months they are in the system.

• Doubling up -- Children and immediate family who have moved in with another family or relative.

• Hotel, Motel -- people who live in welfare sponsored rooms or rooms in

hotels/motels.

If you know of a family that might qualify according to these guidelines, please contact your school counselor.

Families and students in need should be aware of governmental support for the advancement of a student’s education through an initiative referred to as the McKinney-Vento Act. Any student who has had their living situation disrupted or strained might find financial assistance through this governmental program developed for assisting students in completing school. Students qualify if they and their family live with another family; or if they themselves live with another family; or if they are living with an extended family member due to financial considerations. Basic needs for assisting students in the task of attending school are areas where assistance might be granted: Summer school; additional course requirements; field trip costs; and even food and gas (as appropriate) are areas where support may be provided.

Contacts for this resource are set up in each school building.

Pesticide Notification The Northwest Community Schools may use various pesticides in its facilities periodically in order to control, reduce, or eliminate various insect populations which may exist at certain times of the year. Exterior pesticides/insecticides may also be necessary in order to properly maintain district grounds and fields. Only a certified applicator applies pesticides/insecticides to district properties.

Applications are performed, and residents will be notified as required and within the guidelines of the federal, state and local government standards.

Residents requesting information pertaining to pesticides/insecticide usage can contact the Building and Grounds Department at (517)817-4700 during normal business hours, Monday through Friday excluding district recognized holidays.

NORTHWEST COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER The Northwest Community Health Center is a convenient location for affordable medical and behavioral health services for patients of all ages.

It is like having a family doctor’s office in R.W. Kidder Middle School.

The Northwest center staff conducts physical examinations, diagnoses and treats acute and chronic illnesses, administers immunizations, offers hearing and vision screening, and provides preventive health services and education.

Also available at the Northwest center are lab-specimen collection and referrals for evaluation and treatment of illnesses, and injuries not suitable for managing in a school health center.

The Northwest center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday year-round. Stop by the center at 6700 Rives Junction Rd. or call 517-569-3200 or 517-748-5500 for an appointment at the Northwest center.

The Center for Family Health operates the Northwest center. Any adult or child treated at the Northwest center can utilize the services at the downtown Jackson facility at 505 N. Jackson St., and the Dental Clinic at 500 N. Jackson St. All Center for Family Health locations accept most commercial and government insurance groups, including Medicaid; offer a sliding discount program, and never turns anyone away because of inability to pay.

No Child Left Behind requires local school districts to ensure that all teachers hired to teach core academic subjects in Title 1 programs are highly qualified. In general, a “highly qualified teacher” is one with full certification, a Bachelor’s Degree and demonstrated competence in subject knowledge and teaching. (Core subjects include English, Reading or Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Languages, Civics and Government, Economics, Arts, History and Geography.) Parents of children in schools that receive Title 1 funding have the right to request information regarding the professional qualifications of the student’s classroom teachers.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as director and have enjoyed seeing the center grow along with all the little Mounties that have come through the program. After five years as director, I am resigning and transitioning to Northwest Early Elementary. It is my pleasure to announce the new Director of Northwest Preschool and Childcare Center, Kristy West! Kristy has been the director/lead preschool teacher at Noah’s Arkademy Christian Preschool for the past 16 years. Kristy will be a great addition to Northwest Preschool and Childcare Center! Center News The center had quite a busy fall! The preschoolers enjoyed doing many fall projects and activities to celebrate the season of fall! The preschoolers also enjoyed a visit from Blackman Fire Department to discuss Fire Safety. Thank you to Public Safety Officer Jan Ganzel for taking the time to visit our little Mounties! All of the preschool classrooms enjoyed a Halloween party and parade as well! We look forward to a busy winter season here at Northwest Preschool and Childcare Center!

Our littlest Mounties had a fabulous fall season! All of the infant and toddlers got to experience many different fall activities to help learn about the season such as a nature walk and leaf painting. The toddlers got to see the big red firetruck as well! The infants and toddlers look forward to a busy winter season!

Section 504 of Rehabilitation Act As required by the Office of Civil Rights, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (“Section 504”), Northwest Community Schools must notify staff of the OCR-approved Section 504 policies and procedures and notify parents, students, and staff how to obtain hard copies.

The District has an updated Section 504 policy, which was approved by the Board of Education.

The policy is available on the school district website (www.nwschools.org) under Parent Resources. You can view or print the policy and procedure manual from there.

Northwest Community Schools has a District Section 504 Coordinator whose responsibility it is to oversee implementation and ensure compliance on Section 504 records, forms, and procedures; plan and present staff training as needed; consult with district personnel and parents on Section 504.

This year we have a new Site Coordinator, Corrie Risinger. Here are a few words from Corrie: “My name is Corrie Risinger and I am married to Cale and we have two children Calee and Cyle. We also have one granddaughter Caide! I am really looking forward working with the Energizing Education program at Northwest Early Elementary. It is such a great way to get the community involved with the students, and for the students to get the extra help they need to become successful students.” We are excited to have Corrie and look forward to the fun and creativity she will bring to Northwest and EE. It’s important to start every school year out strong and with achievable goals in mind. Energizing Education provides parents with tips and resources at all of our family nights during the school year. One great way parents can help with setting students up for success is by making sure children read at least 20 minutes a day.

We mention this all the time throughout the year, but it’s important to remember that reading 20 minutes a day can add up to 3,600 minutes in a school day and over 1,800,000 words! By the end of 6th grade your child will have read the equivalent of 60 school days, which is pretty impressive and having a bigger vocabulary is extremely beneficial to succeeding both in and outside of school. Northwest Early Elementary News Mark Short, Principal My first months here at Northwest Community Schools have been amazing! I have truly enjoyed getting to know all of the students, staff, and community! It is a delight living and working in the Mountie Nation! Working in our community gives me many more opportunities to engage with our young learners outside of the classroom walls.

As a building, we have had great success with our fall conferences. Thank you parents and guardians for coming into the building and meeting with our staff members to support your student’s education. The conferences and continued communication is crucial to academic success.

The Northwest Early Elementary has also had the opportunity to hire 17 new staff members this year. The staff has positively embraced these changes to improve our practices and provide the very best education for our Northwest Community. Thank you all for your hard work and continued support.

On November 2nd the Koziol Family returned to Northwest Elementary Schools. Mr. and Mrs. Koziol have been an integral part in the past success of Northwest Community Schools, and we are grateful for their continued, unwavering support. We would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Koziol for their recent, generous donation to Northwest Early Elementary and the Northwest Elementary School. We appreciate the Koziol family; they have been a cornerstone for us to build upon as we continue to head in the direction of greatness. Go Mounties!

Robotics in the Technology Lab Digital Linking Lab is a new special at NWEE taught by Mrs. Forner. Students have been working hard on learning new technology skills, and are connecting what they are learning in the classroom and using it on a digital platform.

Second graders have had the opportunity to begin STEM projects in the Digital Linking Lab by creating robots with Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Robot sets.

We are in the beginning stages of this project, but students have been working hard to get the robots built. Students are excited to begin programming the robots with the iPads using the coding skills they have been practicing during their Linking Lab time. This robotics project makes it possible for students to work through problems with a hands-on, project based approach. These second graders are so enthusiastic and engaged with this STEM project, which makes learning fun for all!

Dear Fellow Mounties, Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings. As Thanksgiving approaches, I am reminded of how blessed I am to be the Principal of Northwest Elementary School. My gratitude extends to you as parents and all of your involvement with our school; I would be remiss if I did not mention the integral role that parents, as well as staff and students, play in our school’s success.

Greetings! My name is Aaron Bush and first and foremost, I am extremely excited to be part of Northwest Elementary as the new Dean of Students! I know that I am joining an incredible group of people who love working with kids and strive to build greatness in everyone. My role as Dean of Students is to support the school in many ways and I am excited to bring energy to this role every day.

I am a resident in the Northwest District and enjoy being part of the community. I am married to my wife Jaymie, and have four children, Cameron, Ethan, Eliza, and Blayke. In my spare time I am a

big sports fan and enjoy traveling and spending time with our family.

My passion is working with kids and I have had great past opportunities to do what I love. I know that students are a priority in our district and look forward to bringing past experiences, coupled with an energy for working with kids to this building and district. I look forward to meeting many of you and encourage anyone to contact me with any concern or just the opportunity to meet and connect with you. Service Day Our students enjoyed teaming up with Northwest Early Elementary students in this year’s Service Day! Classes either decorated Christmas bags for the local food bank or Christmas placemats to be distributed to local nursing homes.

We are proud of the work and motivation they all have! You are making a difference!

Students in Mrs. Kennedy’s class learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin and had the opportunity to paint pumpkins donated by Susie Mohlman, of Sproat Realty Professionals. Students were able to take their decorated pumpkins home on Halloween!

We have had a fantastic start of the school year at the middle school. Our students are working hard in all aspects of student life. Our kids are performing well both in the classroom and in their individual activities. They also have done a great job of being positive with each other, especially to the new students in our building. We continue to recognize our students that are kind, motivated, and successful which

We have many sporting events, and musical performances coming up in the next few weeks that will showcase the talents of our students who would love to see your support. We appreciate those of you who were able to make it to our fall conferences; all of your help and support helps to create success in our students.

September 2017 KMS Student of the Month Nominees Twenty five students were recommended by their teachers for our September Student of the Month. On Friday, October 27, parents were invited to attend as we recognized these outstanding students at an awards ceremony held in the media center. Mr. Brooks presented each student with a certificate and some brief words about their accomplishments. Some of the

On Friday, October 13 the Kidder Middle School Drumline made its debut performance at the Northwest High School football game. These hard-working students came in after school for six weeks to learn the basics of marching, drumline music, and stick and instrument techniques.

The Outsiders

Part of being an eighth-grader at Kidder Middle School means embracing their inner Greaser or Soc. Every year students read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. This classic novel tells the tale of young adults from two different social groups. The lives of these characters intertwine to weave a heartwarming (and heartbreaking) story students fall in love with. Before starting the books, students participate in a Gallery Walk to meet the characters. They walk around the hallway and preview things the characters say or do.

After reading more than half the book, students

create a character portrait which explores how the characters appear on the outside versus who they truly are on the inside. Then at completion of the novel, students dress up as either a Greaser or a Soc. They also compete with each other to solve a series of clues and open a Breakout Box (provided through the Jackson County Intermediate School District). The clues make them look back over quotes from the novel as well as answer questions about events that happened in the book. While the book may be finished, the impact of becoming a Greaser or Soc will last forever.

7th Grade Halloween Science

Building towers with candy corn, measuring the mass of candy, and determining who could blow the biggest bubble were just a few of the Halloween science activities in the 7th grade science classes. Students enjoyed many different stations that incorporated science and engineering practices.

Northwest High School is just completing the first trimester of the 17-18 school year. We continue to learn and grow and provide new opportunities and support for our students, families and staff.

The holiday season is a busy time of year for many of us and we have several activities going on that our community can participate in. Look for information on our amazing Adopt-a-Family program, holiday concerts, bell ringing and several winter sports activities. We love opportunities to make a difference in our community. With all of the activities happening, remember this is also a difficult time for many. Reach out to those around you and be a support. Let’s continue to make our Northwest family stronger.

We are collaborating with our local business partners, local agencies and other supporters to help our students with building college readiness skills, We appreciate all of your support and look forward to seeing you at the high school! employability soft skills, and social emotional skills that will help them transition to their next step after high school. Inclusion Opportunity Builds Relationships While Testing Student’s Creativity!: Miss Dryer’s Psychology class united with the classrooms of Mrs Jones and Mrs. Osterberg for a fall inclusion activity. Students worked together in small groups to create scary ghouls as part of an Instant Challenge. Students were given 10 minutes to open their group’s surprise bag of materials, follow specific requirements, and create a Halloween character and profile. The classes ended the activity by enjoying a special treat of orange ice cream floats while students visited and listened to music. Miss Dryer and her students continue to show excitement for the opportunity to collaborate and participate in inclusion activities. These unique events help promote school-wide peer relationships and unity.

Be More Kind Group News The Be More Kind group has been meeting twice a month at the high school.

The goal of the group is to create and participate in activities and events that make students and staff feel welcome in our school community. This is a student driven club - so all students are welcome to bring their ideas. The group believes that “Everyone can make a difference!”

This year the group has increased in size following the success of the events and activities generated last year including the “dude. be nice” assemblies, video, and visits by Brent Camalich, founder of “dude. be nice”.

This fall the Club members have planned and initiated a variety of events and activities, including hosting multiple $2 Community dinner events. Members have more community events planned throughout the year. In October, 20 Be More Kind Club members as well as 25 high school students representing other clubs in the building attended a Josten’s Renaissance Leadership conference. Students returned inspired with ideas they would like to implement within our building and the community.

The Be More Kind program has several committees within it. Students are working on opportunities to encourage their peers to become involved in after school events through a Super Fan program that rewards participation in clubs, as fans at events from band to choir to athletics and much more, as well as academic accomplishments. The Club also has a Service Committee who is currently working to organize a spring mini Relay for Life style event and they have a Daily Acts of Kindness committee working on designing ways for students and staff to be recognized for the kindness they show each day.

A special thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Klinger who donated 100 rocks that they specially collected from the U.P. this summer. The students painted the rocks and displayed them in the inner courtyard at the high school.

A continuing goal of the group is encouraging students to get involved in groups and clubs at the high school. One project that started last year was sharing the information about the variety of groups and clubs available to students at the high school. Last year the group created a set of Google Slides and asked the club advisors to compose a slide which explained the purpose of the group and how students can could join. The slide deck was updated for the new year and the slides shown during lunch on the big screen in the cafetorium. Be More Kind group members also updated a bulletin board featuring the clubs and activities.

The group was started several years ago by high school teachers Miss Marnie Hade and Mrs. Rebecca Moulton when the high school participated in “Be the Change” Challenge Day programs over a period of two years. The group continues the momentum of being positive and making a difference at NWHS---keeping the ideas of Be the Change, the Bully Movie Event Day, and Bystander Training going. Students are welcome to attend the meetings which are generally held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month.

Northwest High School students participated in the Paint a Plow Program sponsored by the Jackson Department of Transportation.

We received a plow that was sanded and primed. Students came up with a composition and started painting in the spring. The finishing touches were painted on the plow this fall, and it was in the Homecoming Parade on Friday September, 22, 2017. The plow will be used to plow Mountie roads this winter.

El Club De Espanol the event started, students decorated Señora Moulton’s car with colorful “papel picado” banners, signs, and encircled it with Dora the Explorer banners.

The Dora images are always popular with the young children at the event.

The Spanish Club “El club de español” has met several times during the fall months. At the first meeting of the year, students brainstormed and discussed activities for the year. There is strong student interest for opportunities to use Spanish outside of the classroom setting. Club meetings over the past few years have included culturally related craft projects, dance lessons such as salsa and cumbia, “game” days, cooking, watching Spanish language movies, designing the annual Spanish tee shirt, and learning new Spanish music. In addition, a variety of guest speakers (including native speakers) have shared their experiences with the students. The activities are student inspired and offer a chance to practice Spanish, get to know other students in other grades, learn more about the Spanish culture outside of the regular classroom setting, and have fun!

During one of the meetings in September, students made beaded Mexican flag pins to acknowledge and celebrate Mexican Independence Day. September 16th

is considered the anniversary of the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. Mexico officially gained its independence from Spain in September of 1821 after ten years of war.

In honor of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso’s birthday on October 25th, club members had a brief introduction to Picasso and his art. He is considered one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century.

Many young “trick or treaters” took the opportunity to show off some of their recently acquired Spanish knowledge by counting in Spanish or responding to the high school students’ greetings.

The “papel picado” banners are the traditional Mexican folk art used for decoration at parties and special events.

This was the seventh year the group has sponsored a trunk at the annual event.

A big NW “gracias” goes to the club members and parents for their support.

All students who have an interest in the Spanish language and culture are welcome to join. The group usually meets twice a month during the school year. Students found out that Picasso started painting at an early age and continued until he died in 1973 at age 92. Then students drew a fish in the style of Picasso while following along with a video tutorial on YouTube by Mr. Shoo Rayner, an illustrator and children’s book author. After seeing a tweet featuring the students’ drawings, Mr. Rayner’s encouraging response via his Twitter account was “Love these Picasso Fish - Keep on drawing.”

The students from “El club de español” sponsored a trunk at the Trunk ‘n Treat event held at the Elementary complex in October. Club members and Señora Moulton donated candy to hand out during the festivities. Before

The Tree Project When Mrs. Kyro contacted Mrs. Dodge at the high school and requested that something be done to spruce up the inner courtyard at the new Northwest Early Elementary building, it began a collaboration between the Art Department, AIS, American Industrial Service, and the Stem program.

When Mrs. Jones, Special Ed Teacher at the high school, mentioned painting trees, Mrs. Dodge remembered seeing them in Chicago at a children’s playground near Lake Michigan.

Two dead trees were located and brought to the

classroom at the high school. The students primed them, decided how to paint them, and later put two layers of protective coating on them. It took several weeks and many hands to accomplish this project. The branches look thin but they are surprisingly time consuming to paint.

Mr. Peeke of the AIS program and his crew, along with Mr. Evans and Mr. Lewis, transported the trees to Northwest Early El. and installed them in the courtyard. Cement was used to stand them upright. A special thank you to Mr. Peeke, the AIS crew, Mr. Evans and Mr. Lewis for their help with the project.

Future plans to collaborate are in the works with Mr. Rossner and students from the STEM program. Details will be forthcoming.

Northwest Adopt-a-Family Thank You

Northwest Community Schools would like to thank the Mountie Nation - students, staff, businesses, and community members - who very generously helped with our Adopt-a-Family program. This year was very successful. We collected food and toiletry items for more than 40 families, more than 30 of those families also received clothing, books and toys. An additional 25 families also were gifted full holiday meals. Your generous help will touch more than 100 school aged (or younger) children in the Mountie Nation. We greatly appreciate anyone who donated to and volunteered with our program.

The Northwest Travel Club recently returned from their second international trip, spending 17 days building memories in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and France. Twenty-four people participated in this trip of a lifetime, including students, teachers, and community members.

Together, we traveled up the Eiffel Tower, saw the Mona Lisa, explored Windsor Castle, watched the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, experienced traditional Scottish music and dance, walked in the footsteps of William Shakespeare, pondered the mysteries of Stonehenge, listened to the choir sing in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and kissed the Blarney Stone. In addition to seeing all these amazing sites, we were also able to try out unique cultural dishes, including crepes, beef Bourguignon, chicken curry, fish and chips, and even Haggis!

ArtPrize On October 2, 2017, Northwest High School students attended ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI targeting the Top 20 entries that had been announced on October 1, 2017. This enabled students to actually meet many of the artists. It was a beautiful day and students covered quite a bit of ground visiting the Grand Rapids Museum, the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum, the DeVos Convention Center, the (GRAM) Grand Rapids Art Museum and the BOB (Big Old Building). The following week in Jackson, all art students had an opportunity to vote for the winner.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS Girls Golf

The NW Girls Golf Team had another outstanding season! Each year, the team strives to make the State Finals Tournament, and the 2017 team of Anya Frever, Julia Lefere, Bryce Lewis, Madelyn Miller, Cammi Pahl, and Sydney Shafer did not disappoint!

They finished 3rd out of 12 teams at the Regional Tournament to qualify and represent Northwest in the Division 3 State Finals at MSU’s Forest Akers West Golf Course on October 20th and 21st. They ended the two-day tournament in 15th place out of the 18 teams that advanced, and are ranked 15th in the state out of a total of 65 teams that competed in the Division 3 post season Regional Tournament.

However, these ladies are not just good golfers, they also excel in the classroom! The 2017 team earned Academic All-State Honors with a grade point average of 3.864, the 5th highest GPA in Division 3 this year. Congratulations, ladies, for continuing the winning tradition - eight out of the last nine years as a State Tournament Qualifier and nine out of the last nine years as an Academic All-State Team! Senior Madelyn Miller earned Individual Academic All-State Honors with her 4.0 GPA and excellent SAT score, which puts her in an elite group with only one other golfer in NW history (Dori Watts 2013). Finally, co-coaches Martha Cantlin and Jill Lefere were honored as 2017 Regional Coaches of the Year by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association for the second time in five years. The coaches are grateful for the past success of the program, excited for the promising future, and appreciative of all the support they receive from Mountie Nation!

MHSAA State Tournament The NW Girls Golf Team finished 15th in the State Finals Tournament this year. Anya Frever led the Mounties with a 97 on day one, and Julia Lefere led the team on day two with a 93. Totals for the two day tournament were Julia Lefere 197, Anya Frever - 206, Sydney Shafer - 207, and Madelynn Miller - 208.

It is a great accomplishment to make the State Finals and to be in the top 15 out of 65 teams in Division 3! We are prooud of the 2017 team for continuing our winning tradition - 8 out of the last 9 years as a State Tournament Qualifier!

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS Northwest Bass Fishing Team On September 23rd and 24th, the high school bass state finals took 5th place on the Grand River in Grand Haven, MI. Thirty-eight schools participated with their teams. Our own Northwest team lead by Austin Tapley and Logan Hemminger (Featured in picture) captured 5th place over the two-day event. While the fishing was tough in the 90 degree heat the team managed to come in with 21lbs of bass. This is a fast growing sport as there were only 11 teams statewide three years ago, and now there are over 50 teams. The winners and runner up can go onto the national competition. There are over 150 college and universities that have bass teams and provide athletic scholarships for fishing. Great job and good luck next year!!!

ALTernative high school Mindfulness with Nurse Karen Fodor Karen Fodor has been a nurse since 1981, when she graduated from Mercy College of Detroit. She held various nursing jobs after graduation, but has been with Northwest School District since 1997. We’ve seen her for years in our buildings, taking care of our sick or injured students. This fall, she approached our Principal, Mr. Upright, with the idea of teaching “Mindfulness,” a valuable life skill, as a way to increase focusing, self regulation and decrease anxiety and stress. With regular practice, it can also increase a person’s general sense of well-being.

Nurse Karen says that for the past three years she has been using this technique at the high school with students who have high levels of anger, anxiety, and/or stress. After about 15 minutes of employing the deep breathing techniques and “noticing,” most kids have regained an inner calmness and centeredness to be able to return to class. She believed that it would be great to teach an entire group of students, not just individually, and wanted to start the whole-class approach at the Alternative High School with us. Twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, for 15 minutes, that is exactly what she has been doing.

Mindfulness program is based upon the work of a man named Jon KabatZinn. Kabat-Zinn started his work in hospitals with patients who were suffering from chronic pain. He used “mindful-based stress-reduction,” as a way for those patients to combat their pain, and expanded it from there. These techniques of mindfulness, deep breathing and “noticing,”

can prevent relapses of depression, decrease anxiety, increase self-regulation, and improve focus. Nurse Karen will be teaching mini-classes at the high school, and hoping that Mindfulness will be able to be offered throughout the district.

Nurse Karen started meditating in 2001, and has been to various insight meditation retreats. She realized what a difference Mindfulness had in her own life, and thought it would be great to share with our building. During the first few sessions, many students were uncomfortable, even shy, being asked to sit quietly and just breathe, taking notice of how they felt.

Several students were laughing, squirming, and refusing to even try. Five sessions later...there we were, sitting quietly, breathing deeply, truly relaxing in those moments of peace and quiet…

We will be working with our fabulous nurse until mid-December.

ALTernative high school New Teacher at Northwest Alternative High School Mr. Tim Warneck has joined our alternative school as our new mathematics and science teacher.

He brings with him many years of teaching and life experience, and has settled in with our happy little “family” pretty quickly and easily.

Tim has had an interesting life, and the road to becoming our newest teacher has had some twists and turns. He admits that when he was a student in high school, his main focus was staying eligible for sports. He graduated with a GPA of about 2.0, and went straight to Oakland Community College.

He dropped out after a year, saying he “really didn’t know how to be a student.” He tested well, but wasn’t ready for the work side of school. After this period, he held various jobs, in factories and driving a delivery truck. He said he didn’t enjoy any of those jobs, and after he started coaching, it

was suggested to him that he go back to school and “Is this for real?” get his teaching degree. He went back to college.
