Meet Sarah Sackman

“I want to represent our community in Parliament”

Born and bred in Finchley and Golders Green, Sarah tells us about her upbringing, her Jewish identity and why she wants to represent our community

Tell us about where you grew up?

I grew up in Hampstead Garden Suburb and went to Norrice Lea shul and cheder My earliest memories are of playing with my two sisters in Golders Hill Park

What do you do for work?

After studying at Cambridge where I was co-chair of the Jewish Society, I’ve worked as a barrister for 15 years

What case are you most proud of?

In 2021, I led the legal team that saved Bevis Marks shul from a development next door It was important to me that we were able to protect the shul where I got married My mum’s side of the family is from Gibraltar, so I feel a deep personal connection to this place. Why did you decide to enter politics?

I care about fairness, justice and giving every person, no matter his or her background the chance to realise their potential My late grandfather, who worked for the Jewish Agency and served as an ambassador for Israel was a living example of public service

Through his selflessness, he embodied Hillel's words in Pirkei Avot: ‘If I am only for myself, what am I?’

No one should ever feel afraid walking on our streets or wearing a kippah in public. Our community’s safety will always be my top priority

What have you been doing for the last few years?

I have campaigned locally to protect services for disabled children and keep open the maternity services at the Royal Free hospital I have been raising my two daughters while continuing to work as a lawyer As Vice Chair of the Jewish Labour Movement, I have worked hard to fight antisemitism in Labour and in wider society.

How do you know Labour has changed?

In Keir Starmer’s first speech as Labour leader, he promised to tear antisemitism out by its roots Actions speak louder than words and Keir has delivered Jeremy Corbyn has had the Labour whip removed and is barred from running to be a Labour MP ever again. The brave Jewish MPs who left under Corbyn – Dame Louise Ellman and Luciana Berger – have returned. There is more work to do but I am proud of the progress we have made I will be a strong Jewish voice in a Labour Government

How will Labour keep our community safe?

Since Hamas’s terror attack on October 7th, we’ve seen how antisemitism has risen Labour has stood in solidarity with the Israeli people and with our community. That’s why we’ve pledged a record £72 million for security to the Jewish community If elected, we will hire an extra 13,000 police officers to help take back our streets and crack down on crime No one should ever feel afraid walking on our streets or wearing a kippah in public.

What issues do you think are most important for our community at the next election?

Our community has been hit by the cost of living crisis. Prices keep going up and taxes are at their highest ever. After fourteen years, the Conservatives have ruined the economy and the NHS - it’s time for a change Labour has a plan to grow our economy and keep prices down, so our community can continue to flourish.
