Camp Simcha took seriously ill children and their families on a three-day-retreat in advance of a massive fundraising campaign.
Respite, a sense of community, and incredible activities – combined with the warmth of a special Shabbat – recently made for a magical and transformative residential retreat for Camp Simcha families.
The three-day retreat in Warwickshire welcomed nearly 200 Camp Simcha family members from Manchester, Gateshead, and London, providing a desperately needed break from their usual routines of medical appointments and treatments. With Camp Simcha staff, dedicated volunteers and an expert medical team watching over all the children, families returned from the retreat feeling stronger and more positive.
Deena Manson from Manchester, whose daughter Basya, 11, has two very rare kidney diseases, explains: “We are in hospital very regularly because my daughter needs treatment every two weeks, so just to get away from all that for a few days made an unimaginable difference to us.
“Understandably Basya gets more of my time and attention but at Camp Simcha every single one of my six children is made to feel special, with each having their own amazing volunteer. We have been to the retreat before and so the children were all counting down to it especially my two youngest ones.
“It’s also such a break for my husband Dovid and I – especially the dinner for two on the first night. Then on the Friday I got to have my nails done, I did some art and I also spoke to the therapist. I hardly ever have a day that is just for me and I felt so rejuvenated from it.
“I went into hospital with Basya the week after we came back, feeling refreshed and ready to get on with it and I think that really came from the conversations I had with the therapist and with Rachely [Camp Simcha Head of Family Liaison]; they built me up and made me stronger.
“The other wonderful thing about retreat is the friendships we have made with people who are going through something similar. We keep in touch throughout the year, not just when we see each other at Camp Simcha events. Having that community of people who can totally relate to what you are going through is so important.”
When one child wasn't well enough to join the fun downstairs, Camp Simcha even took the party to their room. Family Liaison Officer (FLO) Natalie explained the joy this brought to
the entire family: "Our families look forward to our retreats for months beforehand, so it was heart-breaking for this child and their parents that they were unable to join in.
“At the Saturday evening concert, where families were delighted by the surprise appearance of singer Shloime Gertner, he heard the child was unwell and went up to give the family a special performance in their room. It really lifted their spirits and was all incredibly special."
In the past 12 months some 400 Camp Simcha family members attended one of the charity’s residential retreats, providing a critical emotional lifeline to families facing the daily challenges of serious paediatric illness.
The Camp Simcha Fighting Illness with Love Campaign fundraising weekend, which took place on 2nd and 3rd March 2025, is an essential fundraising initiative aimed at providing vital support to seriously ill children and their families. The funds raised, which were matched by a generous donor, will play a crucial role in raising funds for Camp Simcha’s 25 different support services, which help over 1,700 families each year. Camp Simcha’s work is more important than ever, providing families facing medical crises with emotional, practical, and therapeutic care. You can still donate to the campaign by getting in touch with the team.

Eileen Somers celebrated her 102nd birthday with her family and friends at The Nicky, and the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Diane Hawkens, dropped in to join her for lunch and the party.
Mrs Hawkens, who is also a Patron of The Nicky was present at Eileen’s 100th birthday. When she heard that Eileen was celebrating again with the members, she decided to wish her a happy birthday personally. David Delew, Chief Executive at The Nicky said: “Eils, as we affectionately know her, has been coming to The Nicky for several years and we were delighted that she decided to celebrate here with her family and friends. The Nicky is like an extended family and Eils is very much part of that.
“It was very special occasion and it’s not often that The King’s representative drops in the wish you a happy birthday.”
Though it was a dark winter evening outside, the atmosphere inside the Yeshurun Cheadle & Gatley shul hall was lively and warm. Around 90 eager quiz participants gathered for a night of friendly competition, puzzling over the “marathon” page of faces, while enjoying a hearty soup and bagel supper, along with some tasty snacks.
Laughter and groans filled the air as teams racked their brains, with cheers of joy erupting whenever a question was answered correctly. The variety of quirky team names, from “Slow Cookers” to “Gen Z,” and “Odds and Sods” to “The Chasers,” reflected the fun-loving spirit of the contestants.
The evening was a resounding success, thanks to the hard work of the Yeshurun Guild. The efforts truly paid off, ensuring an unforgettable night for all involved.
On 13th February Heathlands Villagers joyfully celebrated Tu B’Shevat, the “New Year for Trees.” This special day marks the season when the earliest-blooming trees in Israel begin a new fruit-bearing cycle.
The morning started with an insightful talk by Rabbi Walker, who highlighted the themes of renewal and environmental stewardship. He then joined the residents in planting a beautiful camellia bush, symbolising growth and our connection to the earth. This Camelia bush was dedicated in memory of the late Ralph Marcus z’l who was a pivotal part of Heathlands Village life.
In the afternoon, Fed volunteer Naomi Rosenston and her grandson Shaya Levine hosted a delightful food demonstration. Villagers enjoyed a variety of 15 fruits, from persimmons to pineapples, and indulged in chocolate-dipped strawberries and refreshing fruit smoothies.
It was a wonderful day honouring the traditions of Tu B’Shevat and celebrating the bounty of nature.
Cheadle & Gatley’s Yeshurun synagogue has appointed Rabbi Benjy Rickman – presently Head of Religious Studies at King David School – as its new Rabbi. Rabbi Rickman will take up, his appointment in early summer.
Following a recent visit to the Yeshurun over Shabbat, during which Rabbi Rickman led Kabbalat Shabbat and Shabbat services, Rebbetzen Emily gave a Dvar Torah to the women of the congregation.
Rabbi and Rebbetzen Rickman met the congregation at Friday night dinner, Kiddunch and Seuda.
At a general meeting of members on the Sunday morning, there was overwhelming support for the Board’s recommendation to appoint Rabbi Rickman as the new Rabbi.
Following the decision, Andrea Cohen, Chair of Yeshurun, said that: “This is a fantastic appointment for the shul and, together with the Board, I am excited for the future of our community.”
Rabbi and Rebbetzen Rickman thanked the Yeshurun community for making them feel so welcome over Shabbat and said: “They were truly honoured to serve as your next Rabbinic couple.”
Rabbi Rickman said that: “I want everyone to feel at home in shul spiritually and religiously as well as socially. I look forward to developing strong connections with everyone.”
The Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Paul Andrews, visited The Nicky to plant a tree to mark Tu B’shvat, the New Year for Trees.
He said: “I’m delighted to join the members of The Nicky to celebrate Tu B’shvat. It reminds us of the importance of growth, renewal and our connection to the environment and I am happy to plant this tree to mark this special occasion.”
David Delew, Chief Executive at The Nicky, thanked the Lord Mayor and added: “This tree will symbolise our shared dedication to a greener future and the enduring strength of our community.”

Many of us have opted to lease our current vehicles, but what happens when it comes to vehicle maintenance?
Most lease companies offer a service plan when you order your vehicle, which typically includes a main agent (authorised dealer) service plan. This is because your vehicle is covered under a manufacturer warranty, and opting for a main agent service plan helps maintain the vehicle’s value, which is crucial when your lease term ends.
So, what are your options? You could use a local garage to save money on labour costs, but it's important to always check with your lease company before using a non-main dealer service provider.
While European block exemption rules
do allow you to have your vehicle serviced anywhere you wish, even non-genuine services may raise questions regarding the terms of your manufacturer warranty. This means that, while you technically have the right to service your vehicle elsewhere, the manufacturer’s warranty could potentially be impacted by this choice.
To ensure that your warranty remains intact and in compliance with your lease company’s requirements, confirm with the local garage that they will use genuine parts and lubricants as specified by the lease company.
To keep things simple and avoid complications, always check with your lease company before proceeding with any nonmain dealer service plans.

With years of experience in North Manchester, I have an in-depth knowledge of the local market that sets me apart. Embarking on the journey of selling your property demands careful decision-making from the very outset. It’s crucial to establish a sense of comfort and trust with your agent, ensuring a smooth journey that culminates in a successful sale. For me, prioritising my clients’ unique needs is paramount. It begins with a thorough understanding of their objectives and a clear plan to translate those goals into reality. Witnessing the satisfaction of my clients as I exceed their expectations is immensely rewarding. It’s essential to choose an agent who is committed to going the extra mile for you. Consistently striving for the highest standards rather than compromising for the sake of cost-effectiveness. With me, exceeding expectations is not just a promise, but a guarantee.
The biggest factor in selling a home is pricing it correctly. Overpricing will deter buyers, as your home may not appear in their search results, appear out of kilter with similar properties for sale, or may not align with their expectations.
Over the past 24 months, only 63.1% of Prestwich homes listed for sale successfully sold, resulting in a move. The remaining 36.9% were withdrawn from the market without a sale.
The solution? Work with a knowledgeable estate agent who understands the local Prestwich market. As an estate agent specialising in the Prestwich property market, I ensure my clients receive a tailored marketing strategy, especially for the town’s nuances, complete transparency, and ongoing updates to secure the best results. The choice of your estate agent plays a pivotal role in how fast your home sells (and even if it sells at all). We excel at marketing properties and maintaining active communication with potential buyers on our mailing lists.

‘I want to say a big thank you to you and your staff for the excellent service provided for the marketing and selling of the property in Prestwich. From my initial meeting with you to discuss a possible sale, to the sale which completed this week, I have been kept well informed throughout the whole process.
I cannot thank you enough for your help and support, which might otherwise have been very stressful for me without you and your team on hand, as and when required. Even reading the energy meters on the final day which was a great help to me.
You have a great team there and I am pleased to give you and your team my personal ‘Gold Star’ rating for a job well done, and I have no hesitation in recommending Thornley Groves to any seller or buyer. ‘ February 2025
Rabbi Ozer and Leah Moszkowski ponder the spirit of Purim and how the festival encourages us to experience joy.
Purim. Like a glorified Otley Run with kids in tow, drinking ourselves stupid, feasting like medieval kings, all while dressed as our favourite superheroes. How does this pleasure fest align with existential dread, Jewish guilt, and the threat of annihilation, the holy trinity (dare I use the term), of the Jewish psyche, especially as we stand today?
So here’s Purim’s cheeky little secret: Contrary to wide held belief, we are actually divinely encouraged to tuck in to the physical pleasures all around us. We are supposed to enjoy our double (vegan) cheeseburgers, our vintage convertibles, the sun-soaked coasts of exotic world corners and spa days with our favourite humans. Otherwise, why do you think G-D filled the world with double cheeseburgers, vintage convertibles, and sun-soaked coasts?
And don’t tell me it’s just to tempt us but we’re supposed to be the bigger wo(man)? That’s cruel. The G-D I know is not cruel. Yes of course everything should be enjoyed with moderation, too many double burgers with vegan cheese will send us to a hospital ward, and if our life’s goals are only centred around spa days and exotic coastlines, that doesn’t speak to an expansive life of meaning, but nevertheless, we are supposed to enjoy ourselves! We are supposed to enrich our earthly existence with the sun, sugar, and beauty, of this wild home called Earth.
I truly believe G-D is happy that we discovered what happens when we leave grapes and grains in dark places, just like G-D smiles benevolently at the little humans enjoying
M&M’s on deck chairs overlooking exotic coastlines.
And now for the whimsy philosophical bit! Not only was the human experience curated with the faculties necessary to enjoy physical pleasure, so that we could have a great time on our sojourn through the Milky Way, we do not actually get extra points for being miserable. In fact, self-induced depression, (and I’m treading carefully here, because this does not, I repeat, does not, include clinical depression, which is beyond our control. I refer only to feelings of melancholy in an emotionally/ mentally/ hormonally balanced brain, which has sunk into the grasps of apathy, through constant exposure to the pits of humanity and the choice to keep misery company,) is actually forbidden.
This is not a paid advertisement for toxic positivity, nor is it sanctioning ignoring the horrible realities we live with; it is a reminder of the deep wells of courage, and strength each one of us has. The uncomfortable truth is, that despair is the easy way out. It takes hard work to find the strength and courage to keep your head far enough out of the water that you can still smile at the sun.
As a nation, we have so much to despair about, seriously; the situation in Israel, global rising antisemitism, illness, heartache and loss, but living in a state of despair means we’ve lost the most crucial war of all, the war of morale, hope, the fight for joy. On this day when we are commanded to be joyful, and to indulge in the physical pleasures of this world, we are dusting off our strongest defences, our most powerful weapon – the Jewish spirit. This is a day where we carouse the streets in silly wigs and clown shoes, laughing drunkenly, singing snatches of nonsense, being carefree. Free of the oppressive burden of despair, free of the shackles of apathy, hatred, and depression.
We don’t drink to forget, we drink to forge ahead with passion and with grace, to hold our heads up high to the haters ancient and present, Persian, and P… I won’t go there… with a booming message, we will always find joy, because that is what the Jewish spirit is made of.

Lighting is one of the most important elements in any home design, yet it often goes unnoticed until it’s not quite right. Poor lighting can affect how we feel in our spaces, how we work, and even how we interact with others. At Hestia Smart Living, lighting design is not just about installing light fixtures – it’s about enhancing your daily life with lighting that adapts to your needs, providing both beauty and functionality.
Pasha Melli, the Owner of Hestia Smart Living, shares his insights into the company’s approach to lighting design and automation, revealing how smart lighting solutions can elevate your living experience.
The world we live in is fast paced, with technology continually evolving and reshaping our environment. We live in open-plan spaces where multiple functions take place throughout the day, and this calls for lighting that can change and adapt to suit different activities.
A typical day in a modern home might include several functions within the same space. In the morning, you might gather around the kitchen table for breakfast, and later, it could transform into a cooking zone. In the afternoon, the same room could become a family entertainment area. By the evening, it may serve as a relaxing space to watch TV or share a glass of wine. The versatility of these spaces calls for lighting that is not only functional but flexible, and that's where Hestia Smart Living’s lighting design and control systems come in.
“Lighting design and control are all about creating experiences,” says Pasha. “We live in modern, multifunctional spaces, and each activity throughout the day requires different atmosphere. A kitchen that transforms into a family room in the evening needs to have versatile lighting to match the mood. We’re here to help make that seamless.”
Lighting control allows you to create the perfect setting with just one press of a button. Gone are the days of fiddling with multiple switches to control various lights in a room. Instead, Hestia Smart Living offers the ability to set up preset lighting moods. With customisable settings such as "Good Morning," "Breakfast," or "Date Night," you can adjust the lighting to match your needs with ease. This preset functionality simplifies the process of controlling your lighting, especially when combined with automation. These systems can learn your daily routines and adjust the lighting automatically based on your activities. So, if you have your morning routine at a set time, the lights can adjust to match your wake-up time.
However, lighting design cannot be effective without good foundational lighting. Pasha
compares it to having a great driver but no car – you need quality lighting design to make the system work. Proper placement, the right quantity of light, and correct colour temperature are essential in creating the right lighting environment. It's about more than just turning on a few spotlights; it's about creating a well-balanced lighting scheme that complements your lifestyle.
At Hestia Smart Living, the process of creating a lighting design begins with
understanding how a family lives and uses their space. During the initial consultation, Pasha and his team ask questions about daily routines and how each member of the household uses various spaces. For example, the team might inquire about the primary kitchen space, whether there’s a preference for a dining area in the kitchen or a more formal dining room, and what activities take place in these spaces.
The team also asks clients about their

preferences when it comes to lighting styles. Some clients might favour chandeliers, while others prefer spotlights. These questions help Hestia Smart Living design a solution that aligns with both functional needs and aesthetic preferences.
Once the team has gathered enough information, they move on to the design phase. The lighting design is presented with a drawing and mood boards that illustrate the intended effect. In larger projects, 3D renderings may be
created to give clients a more realistic preview of the space. The design is refined based on client feedback, ensuring that it suits their vision.
After the design is finalised, the team integrates a control system that works seamlessly with the lighting setup. The automation system can be tailored to the client’s needs, with presets that allow for one-touch control of various lighting scenes.
A crucial aspect of lighting design is selecting

the right fixtures. At Hestia Smart Living, Pasha explains that there are different quality levels when it comes to light fittings, one key consideration in choosing light fixtures is the Colour Rendering Index (CRI). The CRI measures how accurately a light source displays colours compared to natural daylight. Lights with a high CRI – typically above 90 – provide a more accurate and vibrant colour representation.
Hestia Smart Living tends to recommend lights with a CRI of 98%, which mimics natural sunlight and ensures that colours appear as they would in natural light. When light quality is poor, colours can appear distorted or dull. By opting for high-quality lights, clients ensure that their spaces look vibrant and true to life.
Pasha explains the importance of light quality: “When you choose lights with a high CRI, you’re ensuring that your home looks vibrant and natural. It’s about creating an environment where the colours are true, whether it’s the reds in your living room cushions or the greens in your kitchen plants.”
As technology continues to evolve, lighting systems are becoming smarter and more integrated into the home. Hestia Smart Living embraces the latest advancements in automation, ensuring that every aspect of the lighting system can be controlled easily, whether via a touchscreen, voice commands, or automated settings.
The future of lighting is about creating spaces that adapt to the needs of the people who live in them. Hestia Smart Living’s approach to lighting design ensures that every client’s home is not just well-lit but intelligently designed to enhance their daily life.

We catch up on all the news at the Fed, including intergenerational events, volunteer groups, and a new community hub.
In recent weeks, The Fed has been a bustling hub of intergenerational activity, fostering connections, kindness, and support within the community.
On 22nd January, Czech-born Holocaust survivor Lydia Tischler captivated a crowded room at a joint Fed My Voice and Yad Vashem UK event, marking the launch of her memoir, Freud, Hitler and Me, ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day. The audience was moved as Lydia shared an excerpt from her book, recounting the harrowing experience of volunteering to go to Auschwitz after her mother and sister were transported there, and witnessing her mother’s selection for the gas chambers.
Lydia, now 96 and still working as a child psychotherapist, spoke of her time in the labour camp of Oederan, where faulty machinery ensured that not a single cartridge she produced contributed to the Nazi war effort. She expressed pride in her sister Rutka’s presence throughout the war and reflected on her groundbreaking training with Anna Freud, as well as her subsequent work in the Czech Republic, helping children in her country of birth. Her sharp mind left the audience in awe, with Lydia humbly remarking: “I prefer my legs are weak and my mind is sharp. I can get walking sticks for my legs, not for my mind!”
The Fed’s commitment to intergenerational connections was evident during the recent Bar Bat Mitzvah Programme sessions, where young participants had the chance to learn about the incredible work done by The Fed’s volunteer services team. With over 500 volunteers playing a pivotal role in supporting the community, the sessions aimed to engage the younger generation in volunteering and community service.
The children took part in hands-on volunteering by preparing sandwiches and cakes, which they then shared with clients they support in the community. The afternoon tea, accompanied by conversation starters,
sparked enriching discussions, with many young participants eager to hear clients’ personal histories. The session was met with praise from both parents and clients, with one parent noting how meaningful it was for their child to meet a Holocaust survivor.
The clients, too, expressed their gratitude, with one remarking that the children were “lovely” and that the event had been “amazing”. The sessions succeeded in building bridges between the generations, offering valuable experiences and heartfelt moments for all involved.
On 18th February, Heathlands Village was abuzz with energy as the Alpha Feds, a group of young volunteers from Greater Manchester, met with The Fed’s Next Gen Project coordinator, Tammy Friedlander. These school-aged volunteers, many of whom are continuing on from the Bar Bat Mitzvah Programme or completing their Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award volunteering hours, took part in an afternoon of community service.
The group began by spreading kindness throughout the village, hand-delivering homebaked cookies and personalised thank-you cards to staff members at Heathlands Village. Later, the teens participated in the main event: a Coffee Stop hosted in The Purple Room. This monthly gathering brings together members of the community in need of companionship and support, providing a space for connection.
The event was especially meaningful for one young volunteer, who remarked: "I don’t have grandparents, so I wasn’t sure how I would feel today, but it’s been an amazing day – thanks so much for including me." The session demonstrated the power of intergenerational dialogue, leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved.
In addition to these heartwarming initiatives, The Fed is excited to announce the launch of a new community hub: the Winter Warmer Community Hub. This initiative merges two previous events – Chatty Cafe and Bagels
& Banter – to offer a fun-filled, supportive environment for local residents.
Every Monday, the Purple Room will be transformed into a space for socialising, playing games, and enjoying delicious food and drinks while receiving support from The Fed’s dedicated team. With hot drinks available all day and a special 15% discount at the Village coffee shop, it’s a wonderful opportunity for the whole community to relax, chat, and make new connections.
The Winter Warmer Community Hub offers flexible session times to suit everyone: morning sessions from 10am to 12pm, afternoon sessions from 1pm to 3pm, and a full-day option from 10am to 3pm. All activities are designed to foster community spirit and ensure that no one feels alone.

Stress Awareness Month has taken place every April since 1992, dedicated to increasing public awareness about the causes and effective solutions for managing stress. In our lives, where we juggle demanding careers, family obligations, and the constant flow of often bad news, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the pressures of everyday life.
Both the mental and physical toll of stress is undeniable, and many of us are constantly seeking ways to alleviate it. Over the years, one approach that has gained significant attention is the use of natural remedies. From supplements to herbal teas, these methods promise relief, but are they actually any good? Superintendent Pharmacist, Carolina Goncalves, helps us to understand the science and efficacy behind some popular natural solutions.
“As a medical professional, I have to emphasise that clinical opinion is of paramount importance to me,” Caroline says, noting the importance of scientific backing. “Unless products undergo clinical trials, it is difficult for healthcare professionals to publicly support them and lend them credibility. This being said, some studies do prove certain products credibility.”
A common remedy that is often marketed as helping to combat stress is the taking of supplements: “It depends on the scientific evidence regarding the

ingredients in the supplement to whether or not it helps to combat stress. An example of an ingredient that is scientifically proven to contribute to relieving stress is ashwagandha, a small shrub native to India and the Middle East. Clinical studies suggest that ashwagandha helps decrease cortisol levels in tested individuals, leading to improvements in stress management.
Unless products undergo clinical trials, it is difficult for healthcare professionals to publicly support them and lend them credibility.
“Vitamin D3 has also been studied for its role in stress reduction, with positive outcomes. A randomised controlled trial in 2020 investigated the effects of vitamin D supplementation during winter on stress resilience and found that it probably has an influence on the duration of stress responses to stimuli. However, studies are often unable to establish a direct causal relationship between stress levels and vitamin D supplementation, because lifestyle factors also play significant roles here.”
Cannabidiol, known as CBD, has gained popularity as a stress reliever in recent years: “CBD influences stress
levels by activating serotonin receptors in the body, and bring down levels of stress hormones like cortisol. It has been shown to have potential for alleviating stress-related disorders like anxiety, such as in a study from 2022 in Communications Medicine.”
Introducing herbal teas into your diet may also help if you’re feeling a little stressed: “A systematic review of past studies in 2023 found that herbal teas such as green, oolong, and chamomile tea are scientifically proven to impact stress levels, because they regulate cortisol and interact with gamma-aminobutyric acid, a neurotransmitter which promotes relaxation.”
Despite these natural remedies having scientific backing behind their effectiveness, Carolina believes that simple, traditional methods are most likely to get you the best results: “Dietary changes are likely to have a significant impact while being less expensive than, for example, buying a high-street CBD supplement. Certain foods such as eggs, oats, seeds, and yoghurt are high in an amino acid called tryptophan, which has been proven to lead to higher serotonin levels in the body and help reduce stress.”
“Exercise has also been shown to have a positive effect on stress levels, so I would advise looking into viable ways of getting more physical activity into your daily routine if concerned about this. Working out stimulates the release of endorphins, creating feelings of euphoria and happiness which positively contribute to wellbeing.”

Matan Safran, the new Minister for Economic Affairs at the Embassy of Israel in London, outlines some of the opportunities for Manchester businesses looking to expand their reach.
The Embassy of Israel in London plays a key role in fostering stronger economic ties between the UK and Israel, with a particular focus on expanding trade, investments, and collaborations in various sectors. The department responsible for economic and trade relations is dedicated to supporting Israeli businesses in navigating the UK market, while also identifying opportunities for British businesses to invest in Israel’s thriving economy.
One of the main objectives of this department is to promote the export of Israeli products and technologies, as well as facilitate investment from the UK into Israel. The scope of its work is extensive, ranging from supporting startups to collaborating with large, established companies like Teva and Checkpoint Therapeutics. Every year, around 250 Israeli companies reach out to the office for assistance, seeking help with everything from finding distributors to securing investors. These enquiries present a fantastic opportunity for Manchester businesses looking to expand their reach.
The department’s approach is twofold: it works passively by responding to requests for support, but also actively identifies opportunities where Israeli businesses can engage with UK partners. The team assists across a variety of sectors, including cyber security, medical devices, food tech, and AI. While their focus is largely on high-tech industries, they are also heavily involved in helping businesses across other industries such as construction, property, and energy.
In 2024, the Israeli economy has demonstrated remarkable resilience. Despite the ongoing geopolitical challenges, investment levels in Israel have already surpassed those of 2020, showing that investor confidence remains strong. Israeli companies have become more modest in their valuations, making opportunities more attractive for potential investors. This shift has made Israeli startups, which are typically seen as highly valued, more accessible to those looking for investment opportunities, so this is an excellent time to act if you’re interested in working with Israeli businesses.
The department’s work is made even more relevant in the current climate, with a focus on
identifying promising sectors such as artificial intelligence, bio convergence, and deep-tech solutions, particularly in relation to climate change. These sectors are seen as pivotal for Israel’s economic future and its role as a leader in global technological innovation. One of the standout developments in recent years has been Israel’s work in the area of alternative proteins, including lab-grown meat and eggs, plant-based proteins, and dairy alternatives. The country is already a leading player in this field, and the government is keen to expand its influence further.
Looking ahead, the department’s strategy includes focusing on a select number of key sectors such as cyber security, fintech, and alternative proteins. It aims to create targeted events that connect businesses in the UK with Israeli firms, with the goal of fostering trade agreements and collaborations. These events are designed to be focused and sector-specific, ensuring they deliver maximum value to participants.
The geopolitical situation in the Middle East has undoubtedly had an impact on business relations, but optimism remains high. The ceasefire in the North, with the first stage of the ceasefire in the South, creates an optimistic prospect for the future of the region.
A cornerstone of the embassy’s work is that it is a neutral facilitator in all deals, offering its services without taking commissions or fees from either side. The primary objective is to ensure that Israeli businesses can access the right opportunities in the UK, and vice versa. This impartial stance is particularly important, as it reassures both Israeli companies and UK investors that they are working with a trusted and objective partner.
The team at the Israeli Embassy is set to continue its efforts to drive business success and innovation in the UK-Israel economic relationship, with a full calendar of events focused on individual sectors.

HayMax is a 100% natural, organic drug-free allergen barrier balm which was developed by hay fever sufferer Max Wiseberg in his own kitchen over 20 years ago. Max originates from Manchester and his father Maurice Wiseberg, was a member of the Holy Law Synagogue. His father owned the garage on the corner of Seymour Road, opposite the King David School, which is where Max attended.
Having suffered with hay fever since a child and unable to find anything that relieved the symptoms for long, Max decided to try to make his own. When he perfected something that worked for him, he found some willing volunteers to try out his balm. When all respondents who had the opportunity to try it during their allergic season reported that it worked and gave it a mark of three or better out of five, Max decided to launch it as HayMax in 2005.
HayMax has been trapping allergens for 20 years, helping prevent the symptoms of hay fever for many happy sufferers. 80% of hay fever sufferers say HayMax works, according to an independent survey by Allergy UK, the leading national charity providing support, advice and information for those living with allergic disease. And 94% of people find HayMax quick to be effective; 44% say that it works immediately and a further 35% say that it works within an hour or two.
The RESTART IL. ECONOMY Conference, held in London on 10th December 2025, showcased Israeli innovation and entrepreneurial spirit, drawing investors and industry leaders from around the world. Prof. Ruth Halperin-Kaddari has spent her career focussing on women’s rights, and since October 7th has campaigned for justice for victims of gender-based and sexual violence perpetrated by Hamas. A founder of the Dinah Project at the Rackman Centre at Bar Ilan University, an organisation seeking recognition and justice for victims of sexual violence in conflict, Prof. Ruth is pushing for accountability and the prosecution of the Hamas perpetrators, blacklisting Hamas as a terrorist organisation using sexual violence at war.
Prof. Ruth has been in the UK, meeting with Labour Friends of Israel and Lord Mendelsohn’s inter parliamentary committee before a flying visit to the northwest to speak at a recent breakfast in Manchester. Prof. Ruth explained: “While getting evidence is a massive challenge, 13 eyewitnesses that have come forward, including Amit Soussana. We can’t imagine what they went through let alone the victims. We must recognise these atrocities as

war crimes, crime against humanity. Sadly, we are fighting denialism, even the UN Women has largely ignored everything that happened, even social accounts since October 7th have mentioned the war in Gaza just three times out of 69 posts. It took the group eight weeks to state the words “sexual violence”. People are denying that sexual assaults were made, and as most victims were killed, taken as hostage, or cannot even begin to speak, we don’t have the real evidence we need. Photographs were taken of civilians in morgues showing only identifiable marks, but the deceased from the military do have more detailed images.”
Prof. Ruth discussed a report published by United Nations Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten, who visited Israel and the occupied West Bank to “gather, analyse and verify allegations of conflict-related sexual violence reportedly committed during the brutal, Hamas-led terror attacks.” The report said it found “reasonable grounds” to believe that Israeli women were subjected to sexual violence, including rape, gang rape and “sexualized torture,” across “several locations” on October 7th during the attack by Hamas in southern Israel. The sexual abuse occurred in “at least” three locations, the report noted, describing two detailed incidents in one area, based on “credible information,” and a third “verified” instance.
The report also noted that the number of survivors and victims of sexual violence is unknown and that the “true prevalence” of such atrocities “may take months or years to emerge and may never be fully known."
Pramila said that the government had talked about hundreds, if not thousands of cases of “brutal sexual violence perpetrated against men, women and children,” but she added: “I have not found anything like that.”
“This report has become a threshold for any discussion around the world and a historical record. But we have testimonies, from these eyewitnesses, from returned hostages talking about what they saw and heard from other hostages. We have accounts from responders. Of course, I understand what lawyers will say about hear say, but this is our argument, we cannot employ just the traditional forms of evidence when it comes to sexual violence,” continued Prof. Ruth.
Prof. Ruth was keen to point out that Israel has allies that it can build on and this gives hope for the fight that goes on: “It’s wrong to perceive everyone as antisemitic or hostile. We have allies in the Muslim world, including two of our members in Dinah Project. We now have a second wave of denialism, people are saying that because the violence was not planned, premeditated or systematic, sexual violence cannot be a weapon of war, but we must prove otherwise.” The Dinah Project is compiling a report of the evidence from its findings to bring the Hamas perpetrators of sexual violence to justice, and you can support the project and on Conflict Related Sexual Violence generally.

Entrepreneurs truly are the backbone of our economy
Despite the seemingly endless attacks on businesses from various governments over the years and an increasingly cumbersome tax system, we know more than most that entrepreneurs are the real superstars of the economy. We will continue to promote their best interests and always advocate to make it easier to do business in the UK.
Entrepreneurs drive innovation, create jobs, and contribute significantly to economic growth. Yet, they often face excessive regulations, high taxes, and bureaucratic hurdles that make it harder to thrive. The resilience and determination

Increases for employees
Good news for employees — statutory pay rates are going up. From 1st April, the National Living Wage for those over 21 will rise to £12.21 per hour, while younger workers will also see a boost:
• 18–20-year-olds: £10 per hour
• 16–17-year-olds & apprentices: £7.55 per hour
Additionally, Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) will increase to £118.75 per week, while Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) and other family leave entitlements will rise to £187.18 per week.
of business owners are what keep industries evolving and local communities flourishing. We believe in fostering an environment where entrepreneurs can focus on growing their businesses rather than navigating red tape.
You have to take risks to get rewards
Taking risks is essential for entrepreneurs because success often lies in seizing new opportunities. Without taking risks, you might end up missing out on the rewards that can follow. Not every risk you take will pay off, but you’ll be proud of the ones that do – and you’ll learn from the ones that don’t.
Risk-taking is what separates ambitious entrepreneurs from those who stay in their comfort zones. While it can be intimidating to step into the unknown, growth rarely happens without a degree of uncertainty.

More workplace protections on the horizon
Later in 2025, further changes are anticipated, including:
• Paternity Leave (Bereavement) Act 2024: Fathers will have an automatic right to paternity leave if the mother of their child passes away.
• Equality (Race and Disability) Bill: A landmark proposal ensuring ethnic minorities and disabled employees have the legal right to equal pay.
• The Right to Switch Off: A new statutory code of practice will protect employees’ time outside of work, preventing employers from expecting them to be always available.
The Employment Rights Bill: what to watch The Employment Rights Bill (ERB) will move through Parliament throughout 2025, undergoing scrutiny and potential amendments. Employers should look out for government consultations on this and other workplace policies.
With these changes on the horizon, both employees and businesses should stay informed and prepared for a shifting legal landscape.

Plan a trip across mainland Europe to see why this year’s European Capitals of Culture promise something special for every traveller.
This year, the spotlight will shine on three vibrant European cities as they take on the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture. But this year, there’s an exciting twist – Chemnitz in Germany will be the European Capital of Culture, while Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia in Italy will share the honour as the firstever borderless Capitals of Culture, transcending national borders to showcase a united, yet diverse cultural experience.
For tourists, this presents a unique opportunity to explore two fascinating cities with rich histories, dynamic cultural scenes, and a deep sense of heritage.
Once known as Karl-Marx-Stadt – despite the famous philosopher never having been to the city – Chemnitz in eastern Germany has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. Traditionally known for its industrial heritage, the city is now a thriving hub of modern culture, offering visitors a vibrant mix of art, history, and innovation. As the 2025 European Capital of Culture, Chemnitz will open its doors to visitors from across Europe and beyond, offering a wealth of attractions that blend its fascinating past with a bold, contemporary spirit.
Chemnitz has long been a city with a story to tell, and in 2025, it’s set to tell that story in new and exciting ways. The city’s Industrial Heritage Trail is a fascinating journey through Chemnitz’s past as a centre of manufacturing and engineering. Discover the history of the city’s textile industry, which was one of the driving forces behind its rapid growth in the 19th century, and learn about the region’s pivotal role in the development of the German economy.
While exploring Chemnitz’s historical landmarks, a stop at the Karl Marx Monument is essential. The towering statue of the philosopher, who was born in the city, serves as a reminder of Chemnitz’s role in the socialist movement. However, the city’s cultural transformation is just as important, and this monument has become an intriguing juxtaposition of the past and present, symbolising the evolving identity of the city.
Chemnitz’s cultural scene in 2025 will showcase an exciting array of contemporary art and innovation. The Chemnitz Art Collections (Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz) will host a
number of dynamic exhibitions, presenting works from international and local artists that explore themes of identity, technology, and urban life. The city will also play host to a series of creative festivals celebrating everything from theatre to digital art, with street performances and pop-up art installations bringing the entire city to life.
One standout event will be the Chemnitz Biennale, a contemporary art festival that will celebrate the city’s emerging status as an arts destination. Expect an eclectic mix of exhibitions, workshops, and performances, engaging both established and new voices from the art world. The Opernhaus Chemnitz will also be offering a full calendar of performances, including opera, ballet, and classical concerts, ensuring that Chemnitz maintains its reputation as a city of artistic excellence.
For those seeking respite from the city’s bustling cultural scene, Chemnitz’s expansive parks and green spaces provide the perfect escape. The Schlossteich (Castle Pond) is a serene spot for a leisurely walk or a relaxing boat ride, while the Rabenstein Castle and its surrounding nature reserve offer stunning views of the Chemnitz valley.
Additionally, the city is committed to sustainability, and you can expect to see many eco-friendly initiatives during your visit. As part of the 2025 programme, Chemnitz will introduce new green spaces, urban gardens, and community-driven sustainability projects that will enhance the city’s environmental credentials and make it an even more attractive destination for nature lovers.
Like any good German city, Chemnitz boasts a mouth-watering array of food and drink. The city’s culinary scene is a blend of traditional Saxon fare and contemporary international influences. Be sure to try sauerbraten (a marinated pot roast) or schnitzel, accompanied by a pint of locally brewed beer. For a modern twist, check out the city’s growing food scene, where young chefs are taking traditional dishes and adding their own creative spin.
A visit to the Chemnitz Market Square will give you a chance to taste local produce, from fresh cheeses and smoked meats to delicious baked goods. It’s also the perfect spot to grab a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, relaxing while you soak in the city’s unique atmosphere.
Spanning two countries, Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia in Italy are an inspiring example of cross-border unity. In 2025, these two cities will join forces as the first ever borderless European Capitals of Culture, symbolising cooperation, diversity, and shared cultural heritage. For tourists, this provides an extraordinary chance to experience the best of both Slovenia and Italy in one seamless journey.
At the heart of the region’s experienced experience is the fascinating history of the region. These two cities have lived in the shadow of the Iron Curtain, and their intertwined histories offer a unique perspective on the postwar European experience. Take a stroll through Gorizia’s historic centre, with its beautiful Piazza della Vittoria and medieval Gorizia Castle, and reflect on the city’s past as a border town, once divided by political and ideological lines.
Meanwhile, Nova Gorica, founded after World War II as a new settlement to counterbalance the border divisions, has grown into a thriving, cosmopolitan city with a strong sense of identity. As the two cities work together
to present their shared culture, visitors will have the opportunity to explore a fascinating fusion of Italian and Slovenian traditions.
The idea of the borderless Capital of Culture is what sets Nova Gorica and Gorizia apart. Cultural events will be organised on both sides of the border, inviting visitors to explore the seamless blending of two distinct cultural worlds. On the Italian side, Gorizia will feature a wide range of classical music, theatre performances, and art exhibitions, while Nova Gorica will host a lively mix of contemporary art, music, and innovative theatre productions.
The Gorizia-Nova Gorica Bridge, which connects the two cities across the Isonzo River, will serve as a symbolic link between Italy and Slovenia, hosting art installations, cultural performances, and public art projects throughout the year. This cross-border collaboration will offer a rich and diverse programme, featuring performers from both sides of the border.
One of the true delights of the region is its stunning natural beauty. From the rolling vineyards of the Collio wine region to the lush green hills of Brda, the area offers some of the best wine-tasting experiences in Europe. Explore the vineyard trails, where you can sample worldclass wines and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Italian and Slovenian landscapes.
For nature lovers, the region’s Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are a mustvisit. These stunning underground limestone formations are among the largest and most beautiful in Europe, offering visitors a chance to experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the natural world. Whether you’re hiking through the Soča Valley or cycling along the Isonzo River, the region’s natural wonders are sure to captivate.
Gorizia and Nova Gorica both offer excellent culinary traditions, combining the best of Italian and Slovenian food cultures. In Gorizia, you can enjoy classic Italian dishes like risotto, pasta, and truffle-infused delights, paired with the exceptional wines from the Collio region. Meanwhile, Nova Gorica’s more rustic Slovenian cuisine offers hearty stews, wild game, and the delicious potica (a traditional nut roll).
Whether you’re sipping an aperitif in a Gorizia piazza or enjoying a glass of Slovenian wine on the terrace of a Nova Gorica vineyard, the region’s culinary offerings are sure to delight

Dr Beatrice Welsh is an accomplished dentist who has built her career on the intersection of artistry and clinical excellence. With a passion for aesthetic and restorative dentistry, she has transformed countless smiles across her career, using her expertise in minimally invasive, biomimetic dentistry. Through her work, Beatrice has helped patients not only improve their smiles but also regain their confidence, combining cutting-edge dental techniques with an understanding of the emotional impact dental care can have. Now, she has brought her wealth of knowledge and innovative approach to Love-Teeth in Prestwich, where she continues to provide patients with exceptional care and beautiful, natural results.
Beatrice's journey into dentistry began in Spain, where she graduated in 2006 from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid: "I always had an interest in healthcare, science, and art, and dentistry seemed like the perfect combination of both," she says. After completing her degree, she went on to earn a master’s in Paedodontics with a deep understanding of Orthodontics,, which she describes as an "intense but rewarding" experience. "It was a two-year fulltime master’s degree, and it was during that time
We chat with Dr Beatrice Welsh, who recently joined Love-Teeth in Prestwich, to find out how biomimetic dentistry is revolutionising aesthetic treatments, and give one lucky reader a chance to win a teeth whitening package.
that I truly realised how much I loved the artistic side of dentistry.”
In 2008, Beatrice moved to the UK and began practising general dentistry: "I started out working in general dentistry, just getting experience and settling into the UK," she explains. However, as time went on, Beatrice realised that her true passion lay in aesthetic restorative dentistry. "The artistic side of dentistry really called to me, and I began to focus more on enhancing smiles in a way that was not only
beautiful but also functional and healthy."
Her work in aesthetic dentistry gained attention from her peers, and soon she found herself taking on more complex cases. Beatrice further specialised in restorative aesthetic dentistry by undertaking postgraduate studies, including a stint at a highly respected cosmetic
practice in the UK. "Joining that practice was a turning point in my career," she says. "It gave me the opportunity to dive deeper into restorative aesthetics, and I’ve never looked back."
Love-Teeth offers a wide range of aesthetic dental treatments. One of the most popular is the comprehensive Smile Makeover service designed to enhance the appearance of your smile. A Smile Makeover combines various dental treatments, such as dental veneers, implants, whitening, and crowns, to address concerns like crooked, chipped, or stained teeth. During the consultation, experienced dentists will assess your mouth and create a tailored treatment plan to suit your individual needs. The practice also provides treatments for missing teeth, including implants and bridges, and offer teeth straightening options like Invisalign for a straighter smile. For a more immediate transformation, composite bonding and teeth contouring are available to repair chips, gaps, or uneven teeth with minimal discomfort. Whatever your dental goals, the team will work with you to help you achieve a smile that boosts both your confidence and dental health.
At the core of Beatrice's work is biomimetic dentistry, an approach that focuses on mimicking the natural structure and function of teeth: "Biomimetic dentistry is about preserving as much of the natural tooth structure as possible while using materials that replicate the natural tooth in both form and function.” This approach allows for minimally invasive procedures that
help maintain the health of the teeth in the long term.
Beatrice sees the growing trend towards biomimetic dentistry as a step in the right direction for the dental profession: "The focus has shifted from aggressive treatments to more conservative and patient-centred care. It’s about preserving as much of the natural tooth as possible and using materials that work in harmony with the body." By applying the principles of biomimetics, Beatrice ensures that patients receive treatments that not only look natural but are also durable and functional.
One of the most significant benefits for patients is that it can prevent the need for invasive procedures such as root canals: "By using the right materials and techniques, we can avoid many of the issues that traditionally led to root canals. We focus on keeping the tooth healthy, reducing sensitivity, and ensuring the restoration lasts for many years."
Beatrice’s work at Love-Teeth combines the latest advances in dental technology with her passion for aesthetic dentistry. Her approach begins with a comprehensive assessment of each patient's dental health: "We look at the whole picture, ensuring that the teeth are healthy,
is more in biomimetic dentistry," she says. "We aim to do as little as possible to achieve the best possible result."
This work often involves a multi-step process, beginning with functional treatments like alignment and bite adjustments, followed by whitening or composite bonding. "The journey usually involves aligning the teeth first, then enhancing the smile through whitening or composite bonding. The goal is to restore and enhance the smile in the most natural, minimally
their smiles for years, and after treatment, they feel like a new person," she says. "It’s not just about looking good, it’s about giving people the confidence to be themselves, to feel better about who they are, and to live their lives more fully."
Looking ahead, Beatrice is excited about the future of biomimetic dentistry and the continued impact it will have on patient care: "The field of biomimetic dentistry is growing, and more and more clinicians are embracing this conservative, patient-focused approach. It’s a great time to be part of this movement, and I look forward to continuing to help patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles for years to come.”

Jane Carroll, Co-Owner of online event supplier marketplace, Events Made Fabulous, shares her expert advice on how to budget while still having a dream wedding.
Weddings can be expensive, but with some smart planning, you can have an unforgettable day without overspending. We always tell our brides (and other event hosts) that the right suppliers are out there – you just have to find them! So, what are my top tips? Here goes…
Set your style
Before booking anything, create a mood board with your colours, themes, food, drinks, entertainment, and non-negotiables. Then, try not to get distracted or carried away! Our website can help with inspiration, and wedding shows are a great way to refine your vision. Speak to couples who have been married for a while – you’ll rarely meet one who doesn’t think they spent too much!
Set a realistic budget – and stick to it
Everyone says this, but it’s true! Once you’ve created your mood board, work out a clear budget. Prioritise what matters most and be prepared to compromise on the rest. Every time you think, “Oh, we must have that,” ask yourself if it fits within your budget and style. If it doesn’t – don’t book it!
Consider a non-traditional venue
Hotels are beautiful, but they come with a hefty price tag. Think outside the box – your favourite restaurant, a quirky city bar, or even an outdoor farm venue. If the location hasn’t hosted many weddings before, they may be more flexible on price. Negotiate and embrace being different!
Buy pre-loved, get multiple quotes, or rent
Wedding dresses, suits and decorations can be sourced second-hand or from lesser-known suppliers: competition means better prices for you.
Our website connects you with multiple suppliers, so you can compare quotes and find the best value. Always ask for multiple quotes and share your budget upfront – it’ll save time and help you find the right supplier.
A formal sit-down meal isn’t the only option. Buffets, BBQs, and food trucks can be fun and budget-friendly. Guests often struggle with gift ideas – why not ask someone to sponsor your champagne, cover the cost of your cake, or even lend their classic car as wedding transport? My best friend paid for my wedding cake – it was a special and meaningful gift!
Limit the booze
An open bar can drain your budget fast, and many guests are drinking less alcohol these days. Offer a limited selection of wine, beer, non-alcoholic drinks, and one or two signature cocktails. A DIY bar or prosecco wall can also be a stylish yet affordable option.
Cut back on flowers
Fresh flowers can be pricey, so consider a mix of dried flowers, artificial blooms, or greenery. Better supermarkets offer stunning yet affordable options. Have a crafty friend? Ask if they’d like to help create your floral arrangements – it could be a fun and sentimental way to involve them! By being creative and flexible, you can have a stunning wedding without overspending. Take a look at our site for some more great ideas! Happy planning!!

Perfect for couples who want to infuse a new level of excitement into their big day, we take a look at the most unique and unconventional wedding ideas.
Weddings are a time for celebrating love but for some couples, the traditional ceremony just doesn’t cut it. Instead, some are opting for adventurous, alternative experiences that push the boundaries of what we’d usually associate with tying the knot. Whether it’s exchanging vows underwater or soaring above the world in a hot air balloon, bold couples are rewriting the rulebook for days that are less about the typical wedding and more about thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime memories that will last forever.
Believe it or not, skydiving can be incorporated into your special day in a number of ways. It could be a pre-wedding event or a unique post-ceremony celebration that will take your love to new heights – literally!
Imagine a breathtakingly unconventional way to exchange vows; leaping from a plane at thousands of feet as you create an adrenaline-packed start to your married life. Combining the excitement of an extreme sport with the emotion of the moment will perfectly symbolise the plunge you’re taking together.
If you want to go one step further than having skydiving as just an activity on your wedding day, take a trip across the pond! The Skydiving Company in Texas and Skydive Carolina in North Carolina work to make your dreams a reality and allows for nuptials to be made on the plane before the skydive, giving you a ceremony to remember.
If you love the idea of soaring through the sky but find skydiving a daunting prospect, a hot air balloon offers the perfect alternative. You’ll still enjoy breathtaking panoramic views, but from the comfort of a sturdy basket being gently carried along by a (hopefully) serene, calming breeze.
Although you can’t legally get married in the air in the UK, travel to Cappadocia in Turkey where you can share your vows on a hot air balloon over the region with the breathtaking views of fairy chimneys and the amazing landscape.
Not only can your wedding be brought to the skies, but you can also venture beneath the surface with a more than memorable cave ceremony. The echoes of your vows reverberating through the cavern will add an almost mystical quality to your wedding that would be difficult to recreate anywhere else.
The flicker of soft, romantic lighting casting shadows on the stone walls combined with awe-inspiring natural rock formations will offer an intimate atmosphere that’s filled with ancient charm for a private yet extraordinary vow exchange.
There are many destinations around the world for remarkable cave weddings, but don’t forget about the natural beauty of the UK! Kents Cavern in Torquay has five different marriage chambers that offer everything from a stalagmite chandelier formation to stone waterfalls that will ensure your day is filled with awe-inspiring elements in an enchanting and timeless atmosphere.
Sea-rious
There won’t be a dry eye in the house both figuratively and literally if you choose to hold your ceremony underwater. Whether you’re a trained diver, swimmer, or just a water baby at heart, there are many stunning destinations around the world where you can say “I do” in style.
Surrounded by vibrant coral reefs in the Maldives at luxury resort Anantara Kihavah or the tranquil blues of an idyllic clear lagoon at Te Ana Ipo underwater wedding chapel in Bora Bora; getting married in the silence and serenity of the ocean will transport you to a world like no other. With specialist underwater wedding planners readily available, you’ll be in safe hands as you swap your wedding attire for scuba gear and your witnesses for marine life.
A perfect location for slope seekers and frost fanatics, the heart of the mountains will provide a dreamy winter wonderland backdrop for an exceptional start to your married journey. Whether you choose a resort in Europe or further afield, the combination of snow-capped peaks, sparkling glaciers, and crisp mountain air is ideal for anyone who feels right at home in the mountains.
An alpine wedding in Val d’Isère in the French Alps is the perfect choice for couples who are passionate about winter sports and snow-capped landscapes. Le Chardon offers an array of luxurious chalets, or you can exchange vows in a charming, snow-frosted chapel for a magical atmosphere. For an unforgettable touch, you can even opt to be whisked away on a thrilling dog sled ride through the picturesque wintery terrain.
Make sure your wedding ensemble has plenty of room for movement if you’re planning on hitting the slopes during your wedding, and don’t forget some layers!

The joy of a film about a superstar who lived in his own past, present, and future is that any attempt to pin down the seeds of his genius is futile. The subject of A Complete Unknown is the years from ‘61 to ‘65 of Bob Dylan’s life, from when he allegedly turned up to meet his hero Woodie Guthrie to his betrayal of acoustic folk in 1965. Another joy is the replay of songs which have been covered by or written for so many of his contemporaries and hundreds of musicians down the generations. Pete Seeger and Joan Baez were named in the film and the latter’s voice was outstanding. One of the many frustrations about the film is that Dylan, whose muses were multifarious, would have hated it. His voice could have been created electronically to within a microtone of perfect, his likeness

by holographic means, however now in the era of AI and CGI Timothee Chalamet’s performance captured Dylan both in speech and song, which was a triumph. Similarly, Monica Barbaro was a perfect Joan Baez. American literature is full of Huckleberry Finn characters who would change their world and ‘light out for the territories’ as Dylan did on his motorbike, and exactly how the film portrayed him as it ended. I was nine in ‘65 and Dylan’s rise was obscured for me by emergence of the Beatles, so I didn’t follow his success at the time, but I could recognise every song that Timothee Chalamet reproduced, as could every other member of the audience. Elle Fanning’s Sylvie as Dylan’s on-againoff-again girlfriend was touching, and while Pete Seeger appeared to be the most
altruistic of patrons, his was the most unlikely character trait of all in the film. I don’t believe any great artist passes over his fame to support another in quite that manner, however that’s what the film would have us believe. “Dylan goes Electric” by Elijah Wald was the book it was based on, and it only covers the '61 to '65 years so while there may be those who complain at not hearing more of his repertoire that was the period covered. And no right-thinking person could leave thinking they we’re entitled to see more. When you are in the presence of a musical and lyrical genius just take what you can and wish for another film to cover another area of his inner world.
Rob Clayton knows the ins and outs of the meticulous planning and unique challenges that come with wedding photography more than most. A familiar name to JLife readers (you’ll spot his work in most editions!), Rob helps us to discredit some of the most popular myths he hears surrounding photography of the big day…
“You just click a button all day!” If only it were that easy! For every shot I take, there are multiple decisions to be made: what exactly am I photographing? Which lens do I need? What angle do I take? And more! At the average Jewish wedding I'll take over 6,000 images, that's a lot of decisions to make! And then there's the 14+ miles I'll walk on average through the day while schlepping my oversized cameras around. By the time I get home, I'm not just physically drained, but mentally exhausted too.
“Anyone can be a wedding photographer.”
Technically speaking, this is true – there’s no barrier to entry, so anyone can pick up a camera and begin shooting weddings. But to do a good job? That takes a specific skill set, in-depth photography knowledge, and real wedding experience. I don't even think photographers in other fields could do a good job covering a wedding. Wedding photography requires you to be proficient in almost every other type of photography – portraits, action, macro, architecture, documentary, etc. Weddings also throw every possible scenario at photographers, from poor lighting and tight spaces to terrible weather and reluctant bridesmaids and pageboys. Knowing how to act and react in such circumstances – and still get the best possible pictures – is something only experience can teach.
“Wedding photographers are all the same.”
Probably the most obvious way to differentiate between wedding photographers is by the quality of the final product. Beyond that, there are several different approaches to capturing a wedding day. Some photographers like to take charge of every moment, while others will take a purely fly-on-thewall approach and not orchestrate anything at all. For myself, I prefer to let all the moments unfold naturally and only take some control when it
comes to formal family pictures. The moments we capture, the lighting we use, the way we edit, and what we choose to emphasise, all varies.
“It’s all about the camera.”
Modern cameras are amazing machines. But having an amazing machine is not the same as knowing how to use it to its potential. I've lost count of the number of times someone has said to me “I bet that camera takes amazing pictures”. It can take amazing pictures, but when I forget to take the lens cap off, it takes rubbish ones! I'd argue it's the person holding the camera that matters more.
“You must have two photographers.”
This is simply not true. Of course, there can be advantages to having two photographers,
there at all, it’s completely natural.
“It’s just a day’s work.”
A wedding photographer’s job definitely doesn’t start and end on the day. Before each wedding, there's the planning – meetings to arrange a coherent schedule for the day, ensuring every detail the couple wants photographed is included. After the wedding, once all the images have been saved and backed up, it’s time to go through them and pick the 'keepers'. This is known as 'culling', and with over 6,000 photographs to go through from a typical Jewish wedding, this alone can take a long time. If I spend just five seconds looking at each picture, it takes more than eight and a half hours (without breaks) just to get through a full set. Eventually, they'll be whittled down to around 1,000 images,
but no picture can ever be 100% guaranteed. With careful planning and coordination, it’s not a problem to capture extensive coverage of an entire wedding on my own. While it’s not a problem for me to provide an additional photographer, I'd always consider how necessary it is.
“It’s so hard to relax in front of a camera.”
I’m happy to concede that at first, it may feel a bit unnerving to have a big camera following you around, but you'll be amazed at how quickly your mind turns to other things with so much going on during the day. Amid all the excitement and energy – and taking a more documentary-style approach – I just become part of the furniture, which in turn allows everyone to act as if I’m not
which all require individual editing; this process can take several days from start to finish! Info@robclaytonphotography.co.uk @robclaysphotos
orticultural therapy sessions and landscaping work on JAM ’s allotment has begun.
At the end of January, at the Bnei Akiva Bayit, Jewish Action for Mental Health (JAMH) held a successful horticultural therapy session which was attended by 17 members of the community.
The horticultural therapist was Hayley Watson from Get Up and Grow in Rochdale who has specialised in this area for over a decade. She was able to create a relaxing, fun and engaging session making wildflower seed bombs.
Most participants had not come across seed bombs before, but Hayley said: “These wonderful little creations full of seeds not only help in the mindfulness of those people who made them but will also be helping the bees and butterflies this summer!”
Even though gloves were provided, many people enjoyed getting their hands muddy which was part of the sensory experience.
One participant, Steven Smith, said: “The horticultural therapy experience was truly amazing, not only did I enjoy myself but it was truly rewarding to feel how all the other participants in the room were engaged, relaxed and finding making wildflower seed bombs an enjoyable experience, even if it was quite messy!”
Two pupils from Tmimei Lev attended the session and their Head Teacher Chana Brown said: “The pupils had a fantastic time, and it was a good purposeful activity which worked on their social skills as well!”
As nature plays a very important role in the health both physically and mentally of others, JAMH is hoping to run more sessions in the future both indoors and outdoors so that we can cater for people with multiple disabilities also.
Work on the Albert Avenue allotment started this week, with a team from Groundwork, led by Urban Nature Contract Specialist Leah Slater, laying the foundations for the new larger polytunnel which will have wider double doors for wheelchair access, a path wide enough for a wheelchair and raised beds.
The charity is also looking into the possibility of setting up a men’s mental health peer support group which it hopes will be interactive, allowing great communication and integration for those attending. Incredible Edible, which owns the allotment JAMH is using is doing a crowdfunder towards a disabled toilet.

ome Instead is transforming healthcare by connecting individuals to community support, fostering relationships, and promoting healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Every day, we hear about the importance of staying active, eating well, and keeping our minds sharp as we age. But what if the best prescription for good health wasn’t something that came in a bottle, but rather a phone call, a friendly chat, or a community activity? Social prescribing – connecting people to non-medical support in their community – isn’t just a luxury; it’s a lifeline. And with Social Prescribing Day approaching on 14th March, there has never been a better time to talk about why this approach is essential, not just an optional extra.
services, community activities, or local support groups - their mental and physical health improves dramatically.
Social prescribing is about giving people the tools to lead happier, healthier lives, surrounded by the familiarity of their own communities. Instead of just treating illnesses, it prevents them by fostering relationships, purpose, and joy.
The statistics speak for themselves. Home Instead’s New Ageing Index report found that 80% of older people prefer to be treated at home if they become ill, and 70% worry about their ability to care for themselves as they age. Yet, a staggering number also express concerns about loneliness, lack of purpose, and cultural exclusion. When older adults are supported in staying socially connected - whether through befriending
After Esther’s husband passed away, she found her once-bustling home eerily quiet. Her children and grandchildren visited when they could, but the days in between felt long. Her care professional, Dawn from Home Instead, mentioned a social prescribing initiative; one that connected older adults to meaningful activities and companionship. Sceptical but curious, she agreed to try it. Within weeks, Esther was attending a weekly discussion group, rekindling her love of baking with a community cookery class, and even getting paired with a volunteer who shared her passion for philosophy books. Before long, she was leading a small book club from her living room via video call, engaging with fellow literature lovers from the community. The difference was undeniable - not just to Esther, but to her entire family and Dawn, who saw a renewed spark in her.
Social prescribing is not just ‘nice if you can get it’ – it’s a crucial part of ensuring that older adults live full, meaningful lives. It’s about seeing the whole person,
not just their medical needs. It’s about empowering people to stay engaged with their community, to continue learning, and to remain surrounded by kindness and companionship.
As we mark Social Prescribing Day in March, let’s commit to making connection and community an essential part of care. Because, as Esther and so many others have discovered, a life-saving prescription doesn’t always come from your pharmacy, it can often come from your community group too.

The
Neurokinetics
Club celebrates a successful third year of offering support to those with neurological conditions.
A Prestwich exercise and support group now entering its third successful year, is looking to attract more members, volunteers and supporters.
The Neurokinetics Club was formed in 2023 by Parkinson’s sufferers to help people like themselves with a variety of neurological conditions to keep on the move.
Meeting twice a week for one hour sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays, the club offers members struggling with mobility and balance a chance to greatly improve physically and mentally, thanks to specially trained instructors and volunteers who are there to offer practical support. And it’s not just the members who benefit – partners and carers get together while the classes are running to share experiences and lend each other support over a cup of tea.
Currently classes are for men only and are held at Manchester Maccabi in Prestwich where there is free parking outside, and a warm, welcoming and fun atmosphere within. Classes cost just £5 a session, and there are plans to reinstate classes for women in the future.
If you are suffering from Parkinson’s, MS, Stroke, Dementia or any other neurological
condition and would like to maintain or improve your mobility and meet up with similar people, then contact the Neurokinetics Club to find out more. Also if you would like to join as a volunteer you can get in touch the same way. The club will provide training free of charge.
Neurokinetics Club is a registered charity and has run several fund-raising events and while others are in the pipeline, any donations, big or small, will help the Club continue to provide this vital service for years to come.
To find out more about how the Neurokinetics Club can help you, or to make a charitable donation, please contact Andrew Saipe on 07917 778370 or check out the club’s website.

The Manchester Grammar School is celebrating its students high number of offers from Oxford and Cambridge.
The Manchester Grammar School pupils have received offers to study a diverse range of academic courses at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. This year, 19 pupils have secured offers from Cambridge and 13 from Oxford, reflecting their exceptional dedication and achievement.
The High Master at The Manchester Grammar School, Dr Martin Boulton, proudly announced: "The application process remains challenging and requires a high level of commitment; I would like to congratulate our pupils on their success, and thank our dedicated staff for all the work they have done in stretching these pupils well beyond the confines of the normal curriculum."
School Captain for 2024 to 2025, Jack Rosenthal has secured a place from St John’s College, Cambridge to study Modern & Medieval Languages. Jack spoke about his experiences of applying to Cambridge University: "Having visited various universities in both England and Scotland throughout year 12, I found myself drawn to the University of Cambridge; the splendour of this historic place was incomparable to any of the other towns and cities that I had visited. I was already aware of the rigorous nature of the Oxbridge application
process, but even I was taken aback by just how intense and time-consuming this really was. Fortunately, the support offered to me by my form tutors, Head of College and subject teachers helped to make the journey as smooth as possible, and I will be forever grateful for their kind assistance.
“Although I considered a number of subject options, I, ultimately opted to read Modern and Medieval Languages – specifically, French and Italian (both of which I am currently studying at A-Level, alongside History) – because I
believe that, despite the recent advancements in artificial intelligence and other forms of technology, the ability to converse on an international level will always be highly valued by the world’s best employers. Moreover, particularly at the University of Cambridge, my studies will go far beyond the language itself; the course includes a diverse range of topics, and we will be exploring the history, culture, philosophy, politics and values of the Frenchand Italian-speaking worlds.”

Whether you prefer to have your motorised blinds wired into your household power supply and integrated with systems like Lutron, Crestron, or Control4, or you opt for a convenient battery-operated solution, the expert team at Fabrics of Chester will discuss the best option for your home and help guide you through the process.
Motorised systems are not only a great
addition to a smart home but also offer a range of practical benefits. If you have little ones running around, you can rest assured that the absence of cords and chains eliminates any potential safety risks. These systems can also be programmed with timers to open or close your blinds and curtains
when you’re away, providing an added layer of security and reassurance. And for those hard-to-reach windows, motorisation offers the ultimate convenience – no more struggling to open and close your blinds or curtains manually every day.
Believe it or not, motorised systems are often more reliable than your traditional setup. The absence of cords means there’s less wear and tear, and the rechargeable lithium batteries that are used in many systems can last for months on a single charge. Bluetooth connectivity, which is becoming increasingly common in motorisation, is also highly
reliable and easy to use.
If you decide to opt for a hard-wired system, Fabrics of Chester can work with your electrician or project manager to ensure the wiring is correctly installed ready for your new motorised blinds or tracks. In the unlikely event that you encounter any issues with your system, there are extensive guarantees available, and the company’s trained team have over 15 years of experience working with motorisation.
The showroom carries a selection of top of the range brands and is a Somfy specialist. It also carries other recognised brands such as Luxaflex and Louvolite - all of which have recently updated their systems to the latest technology.
Whether you’re motivated by safety, convenience, or simply just a love for gadgets, call or pop into Fabrics of Chester to schedule a free home visit to help you elevate your space with cutting-edge blinds, curtains, and shutters.

Animals have always played an important part in human life throughout history but haven’t always been by our sides as pets – even though it may feel like they’ve been there forever! The history of pets is connected to the domestication of animals, though the exact time and location of the first domestication remain a mystery.
The first animal to be domesticated was man’s best friend, the dog. In 2016, a study
by the University of Oxford published evidence that dogs were domesticated twice – once in Europe 16,000 years ago and again in Asia 14,000 years ago – from two separate wolf lineages. A 2017 study suggested that early dog-like wolves were genetically predisposed to be friendly, which likely paved the way for the first relationships between humans and dogs, where people provided food or shelter in exchange for the dogs’ service as guards or hunting companions.
Cats, on the other hand, have a more complicated history. Unlike animals that were domesticated for their milk, meat, wool, or labour, cats didn’t offer much to human survival except pest control. Archaeological evidence suggests that cats were drawn to human settlements to take advantage of mice and food scraps. It is believed that the ancient Egyptians were the first to domesticate cats as pets in the 16th century – after already taming lions, monkeys, and hyenas!
But when did domesticated animals become pets? It wasn’t until the 18th and 19th centuries that the concept of pethood (as we know it today) in Europe came into existence. At this time, they were seen as symbols of connection to the natural world and human control over nature.
Fast forward to the present day, and the human obsession with keeping animals has gone above and beyond just our furry friends. While pets like dogs, cats, and guinea pigs are familiar companions, some people have always sought after something a little more unusual, such as exotic pets. An exotic pet is an animal not native to
the country in which it’s kept and is often considered a wild species rather than a domesticated one, such as birds, reptiles, fish, insects, and more.
Throughout history, it was typically wealthy people that kept exotic animals as a status symbol, with many members of the royal family keeping collections of wild animals on their estates at Richmond and Kew in the 18th century.
The 20th century is when the demand for unique creatures exploded, and millions started being traded across the globe. Much of this can be attributed to the popularity of social media, which has provided a way for people to easily advertise, sell, and show off live animals. For example, a flurry of videos posted to YouTube in 2015 of slow lorises eating rice balls in captivity went viral and led to poaching of the wide-eyed primates for the pet trade.
The relationship between humans and animals has evolved significantly over thousands of years, from early domestication for practical purposes to the modern-day phenomenon of exotic pets. While domesticated animals have integrated seamlessly into human lives, the increasing popularity of exotic pets raises important ethical and environmental concerns. The demand for unique creatures has led to the exploitation of wild species and the disruption of ecosystems. As we continue to have pets into our homes, we must consider the impact of pet ownership on both animals and the planet, ensuring that the bond between us and them remains mutually beneficial and respectful.
Furry, scaly, or slimy? We want to see them all! Send in your pet pictures by 30th April 2025, we’ll be sharing them on socials and in our next edition. The best one will win a medium PupPillow in slate grey courtesy of Pup and Kit, worth £89!
Rabbi Doniel Stern reflects on inheritance and the power of storytelling during Passover.
I was spending time with our seven-year-old before he went to sleep. As we were chatting, he paused, looked up and asked: “Daddy, when you die, can I have all of your money?” My first thought was: “Oy, he doesn’t realise that teaching isn’t the most lucrative profession.” As it was within two months of my father’s passing, the pain of the loss was still raw, and losing his grandfather had obviously been playing on his mind. Over the ensuing few days, I found myself contemplating what I would want to leave for my children, which led onto my pondering over what Daddy had left for me.
In terms of monetary assets, Daddy wasn’t wealthy. (There were times that people in need would knock on for a donation. My parents would invite them in, serve them refreshments, and take a genuine interest in them. Daddy would then proceed to give them a charity voucher. At times when business was rough, Mummy would ask him: “Doll, can we afford this?” His response was always the same: “Just because I’m struggling, why should they?”
However I was acutely aware that even though I wasn’t left millions, Daddy left me with so much more; a relationship that was deep, genuine and loving, and a lifetime of personal example of the values he held dear.
I find that there are two ways that I continue to feel this closeness. Occasionally, memories of the past swim through my mind. Whether it is the holidays, the family smachot, the incredible things I noticed him do on the quiet; I am filled with an inner warmth, a deep sense of connection.
However, what I find much more powerful and therapeutic is both hearing and telling over stories of Daddy’s life; his love and devotion
to the family, his Torah learning, kindness, and how he faced challenges with dignity, faith and courage. I don’t understand why, but this second approach goes so much deeper. There is a certain feeling of intense emotion that washes over me, often bringing me to tears. These aren’t tears of sadness. They come from an overwhelming sense of a continuing relationship with my father, an ambition to inculcate his values, direction and standards into my own life, and a powerful desire to continue his magnificent legacy. Daddy and I live on.
It hits me that this is precisely our job on Seder night. Jews from across the globe sit with family and friends, going through the motions; singing the songs, munching the matzah. Nestled somewhere between the banter and the booze is the main mitzvah of the evening – we verbally tell over the story, allowing the feelings and emotions to wash over ourselves. When done genuinely, the outcome we aim for should be magnificent – an overwhelming feeling of a continuing relationship with our Father above, an ambition to inculcate His values, direction and standards into our lives, and a powerful desire to continue our People’s magnificent legacy. G-d and His people live on.
As I finish this piece, our seven-year-old is curled up in bed, sleeping peacefully. It is tempting to go and stand by his bed, gently wake him up and remind him in a whisper of his request. I want to tell him while gazing into his sweet innocent face that although I don’t know if I will leave him millions, my desire is to invest my life into leaving him with something so much more than money. I aim to build a relationship of love, closeness and personal
example that will allow him to feel cherished, valued and empowered to continue the magnificent legacy that Daddy left for me.
On second thoughts, I can imagine what his response will be. He will probably look up bleary eyed and say: “Daddy, can I come downstairs and have some chocolate.” I guess our conversation can wait for a while.
May this piece be a source of merit to elevate the soul of R’ Yaakov Yisroel ben Ahron Shmuel, my father, my teacher.

Passover is a time for families to gather and celebrate; the seder is filled with rich traditions, symbolism, and, of course, incredible food. Here are some recipes to whet the appetite.
Matzo ball soup
Matzo ball soup is a Passover classic and a favourite starter for the seder. The matzo balls are light, fluffy, and perfectly complemented by a rich chicken broth.
Ingredients:
• 250g matzo meal
• 4 large eggs
• 50ml vegetable oil or chicken fat
• 50ml water or chicken broth
• 1 tsp salt
• 1/4 tsp pepper
• 1/4 tsp garlic powder
• 1/2 tsp onion powder
• Fresh dill, chopped (optional)
• 2 litres chicken broth
• 1 carrot, sliced thin
• 2 celery stalks, sliced thin
• Fresh parsley, for garnish
Instructions:
1. In a mixing bowl, combine the matzo meal, eggs, oil, water, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and dill (if using). Stir until fully combined and let sit for 30 minutes in the fridge.
2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
3. Wet your hands and form the matzo meal mixture into balls, about 1 inch in diameter.
4. Carefully drop the matzo balls into the boiling water. Lower the heat to a simmer and cook for about 20 minutes, or until the matzo balls float to the top and are fully cooked.
5. In a separate pot, bring chicken broth to a boil. Add the sliced carrots and celery and simmer until tender, about 10 minutes.
6. Add the matzo balls to the broth and simmer for an additional five minutes.
7. Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with fresh parsley. Serve hot and enjoy!
Roast chicken is a traditional dish, and this herb-crusted version adds a burst of flavour that will have all your guests raving

• 60ml olive oil
• 2 tbsp fresh rosemary, chopped
• 2 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped
• 1 tbsp garlic, minced
• 1 tbsp lemon zest
• 1 tsp salt
• 1/2 tsp black pepper
• 1 lemon, halved
• 1 onion, quartered
• Fresh parsley, for garnish
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 190°C.
2. In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, rosemary, thyme, garlic, lemon zest, salt, and pepper.
3. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels and rub the herb mixture all over the skin, making sure to get some under the skin as well.
4. Stuff the chicken with the halved lemon and quartered onion for extra flavour.
5. Place the chicken in a roasting pan and roast for 1.5 to two hours, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 75°C and the skin is golden brown and crispy.
6. Let the chicken rest for 10 minutes before carving.
7. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with roasted vegetables or matzo farfel.
For dessert, a flourless chocolate cake is the perfect end to the meal. Rich, dense, and decadent, this cake is a crowd-pleaser and a great way to round off the evening.

3. Remove from heat and whisk in the sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt until fully incorporated.
4. Sift in the cocoa powder and mix until the batter is smooth.
5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
6. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out with just a few moist crumbs.

For five nights in February this very popular theatre company provided its audience with much needed respite from the gloomy February evenings with their version of Noel Coward’s perennially amusing Present Laughter.
I was surprised to find that this play was written in 1938, making it nearly ninety years old, because it held up very well as a study in celebrity worship, self-centeredness, and affectation.
Gary Essendine, the main character, played exceptionally well by Robert Levy, is certainly guilty of being affected and most definitely narcissistic, was intended by Coward to be a send-up of his own personality. Levy never lost his composure despite the attentions of some very bizarre characters, not least the crazily dressed maid, played by Suzy Gellman, whose preoccupation with seances and other worldly magic did not seem to detract from her need
to do housework at the most inappropriate time. Nor did Fred the sarcastic butler stop him declaring his genius to all who would listen especially to a female fan young enough to be his daughter. However, he almost met his match with Roland Maule, who, crazed with adoration and played with manic abandon by Peter Kaye came close to stealing every scene he was in.
However, there are two women who knew him too well to allow him to get away with his self-indulgent fantasies – his ex-wife (Gill Cooper) and his secretary Monica (Lindsey Landes) who kept her patience and her flat Northern accent beautifully throughout. Noel Coward was a terrible snob, and by giving his secretary such perfect contrast to his upperclass RP accent, Director Katherine Thomas extracted a lot of humour from their exchanges as well as those between Gary and his almost ex-wife, played by Fran Horwich with long
Elaine Bermitz recounts an evening at Midlife Crisis Theatre Company’s production of Present Laughter.
suffering affection, combined with frustration at his shortcomings. Bored by his inability to see that age was creeping upon him, she still bought him a beautiful smoking jacket from her trip abroad and succumbed to his charms at the end of the first act, drawing a gasp from the all too knowing audience.
More twists and turns followed the interval, including a bravura performance by Gary’s superfan and a sweetly naive confession from his admirer Sarah Adams, as well as a revelation from Maureen Lypiatt, which must have been quite shocking in its day.
In 1942, Present Laughter was a huge hit, both in the UK and America and not surprisingly, has been revived every decade since. It clearly still has something to say about snobbery, stardom and self-delusion but in a light and humorous way. It is to the crew and cast’s credit that we all left the theatre feeling so uplifted.
Midlife Crisis has used the Empty Space Theatre a few times now and is feels like the perfect place for them allowing for a good-sized good audience and having excellent lighting and acoustic facilities. On the Tuesday the house was more than three quarters full, and the Saturday had long been a sellout. Certainly not a bad achievement at a time when theatres small and large are all struggling to win audiences.
The area is welcoming some great new dining spots over the next few months.
An exciting new addition to the Bury dining scene, Mélange has replaced Oscar’s in Red Hall Hotel on the outskirts of Ramsbottom and invites guests to enjoy a carefully curated menu that blends Mediterranean inspiration with subtle British influences. Inspired by the French word for ‘a varied mixture‘, Mélange’s menu captures the essence of the Med’s vibrant cuisine while honouring the comforting traditions of British dining. Diners can feast on dishes such as warm goat’s cheese salad with red wine-poached pear and Mediterranean-style seafood risotto. British favourites are given a unique twist, like buttermilk-soaked fried chicken and Beef Wellington wrapped in Chef’s special pastry.

Reminisce on some of the best gag news stories the UK media has put out for April Fools’ Day.
April Fools’ Day is a day when humour, wit, and often elaborate pranks are in full force across the globe. In our country, the media has embraced the occasion with gusto, offering up some of the most memorable and entertaining hoaxes in recent history. Here are some of the most iconic 1st April stories from British media that have left some readers scratching their heads in disbelief.
One of the earliest and most famous April Fools’ Day pranks in British broadcasting history was carried out by the BBC. On 1st April 1957, the programme Panorama aired a segment featuring a Swiss family harvesting spaghetti from trees. The segment, which showed women pulling strands of spaghetti off tree branches, was presented with such a serious tone that many viewers were taken in by it. At the time, spaghetti was still a relatively unknown commodity in the UK, and the idea of homegrown pasta seemed plausible to some. The reaction was swift, with people calling the BBC to ask how they could grow their own spaghetti trees. To this day, this remains one of the most successful April Fools’ Day pranks in history.
In 2008, the BBC once again proved its knack for pulling off memorable pranks with a story about flying penguins. The BBC published an advert for a mock documentary which showed penguins taking flight from Antarctica and embarking on an epic journey across the globe to South America. The stunning visuals, combined with the calm narration and the surreal premise, convinced many that this was an actual scientific breakthrough. The story quickly went viral, and while some spotted the joke early on, the BBC had successfully duped a vast audience.
Turnabout is fair play, as they say, and last year the BBC found itself in an embarrassing situation after falling for an April Fool's joke created by Blenheim Palace. The prank involved a fictional report claiming that 200 people had gathered in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, in 1769 – 200 years before the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival. BBC Oxford, taking the story seriously, broadcasted it as fact across its social media
channels, reaching over 50 million people. It wasn't until a few hours later that BBC bosses realized their mistake and issued a correction. The prank's clue was the mention of Vincent Furnier, the real name of rock legend Alice Cooper, among the supposed performers.
A spokesperson for Blenheim Palace later confirmed that the event had been a playful nod to 1st April, as part of the site’s history of hosting music concerts.
In a newspaper prank in 2022, The Mirror claimed that mud from the Marble Arch mound would be used to help rebuild Hadrian’s Wall as part of the government’s 'levelling up' plans. The article stated that the plan had become the centre of a social media row and that a Northern Labour MP vowed to protest by lying in front of the lorries transporting the mound’s sections. The piece ended with the statement that an independent assessment suggested the work would not be completed until 1st April, 2099, one of many hints that the article shouldn’t be taken too seriously.
Eating a balanced diet is essential for everyone, and a vegetarian diet can provide all the essential vitamins, minerals, and protein needed to support a healthy lifestyle. If you’re considering the transition to vegetarianism, you may have some concerns about meeting your nutritional requirements.
V for Life is a Manchester-based charity that supports older people following a plant-based diet, providing useful information and tasty recipes. Part of Alex Connell’s role involves running meat-free cookery demonstrations and training professional chefs which makes him the ideal person to dispel common misconceptions and offer expert advice on eating and maintaining a well-balanced diet –veggie style!
Perhaps one of the most common vegetarian myths is that those following a plant-based diet don’t get enough protein, Alex tells us why this is not the case: “This concern may stem from older ideas about ‘first-class’ and ‘second-class’ protein. The basic idea was that meat contains all the essential amino acids, while plant sources of protein do not. However, by eating a variety of plant-based foods over the course of the day, you can obtain all the essential amino acids your body needs.”
There are plenty of ways to get your protein fix while following a vegetarian diet: “Beans, soya products, Quorn, pulses, seeds, nuts, quinoa, tofu, seitan, and tempeh are all excellent sources – even rice and wheat contain some protein. Depending on factors such as sex, age, and body size, adults typically require between 46g and 56g of protein per day. Even the humble beans on toast – using half a can
Roving Chef at V for Life, Alex Connell, debunks some popular myths about vegetarian diets for Veggie Month this March.
of baked beans – contains approximately 12g of protein, making it a simple and effective option.”
Lack of iron is another common plant-based misconception as iron is often associated with meat, but there are plenty of other ways to meet your daily requirements: “Green vegetables (yes, listen to your mum and eat your greens!), beans, tempeh, pumpkin seeds, wholewheat pasta or bread, quinoa, and tahini are just a few great iron sources. To improve the absorption of non-haem iron from plant sources, it helps to consume vitamin C-rich foods or drinks at the same time. For example, adding tomatoes or peppers to a meal, or having a glass of orange juice can significantly enhance iron absorption. Additionally, many foods are fortified with iron, including breakfast cereals, bread, margarine, and soya milk, which can make it easier to meet your daily needs.”
Fatigue can often be associated with vegetarianism, but Alex advises periodically reviewing your diet to ensure you are getting all the necessary nutrients for a healthy and active lifestyle: “If a person following a vegetarian diet feels tired or fatigued, it may be due to various factors unrelated to diet, such as stress, lack of sleep, or an underlying health issue. However, a lack of iron or protein in the diet could be a contributing factor. Many top athletes follow plant-based diets, including Lewis Hamilton, Novak Djokovic, Venus and Serena Williams, Alex Morgan, and Carl Lewis. Their success demonstrates that a well-planned plant-based diet can support peak physical performance.”
Sceptics might be right about this one! Alex believes that a vegetarian diet isn’t automatically healthier than one that includes meat: “A balanced vegetarian diet can provide everything needed for good health, and studies have shown that those following this may have improved cardiovascular health, reduced rates of obesity, and lower risks of certain types of cancer. However, adopting a plant-based diet is not a cure-all; it’s important to remember that other lifestyle factors also play a significant role in overall health. Also, the increasing availability of processed meat-free foods, while convenient and often tasty, means that it’s still important to focus on whole foods and limit consumption of highly processed items that may be high in fat, salt, and sugar.”
Alex urges people to give vegetarianism a go and emphasises the importance of doing your own research before listening to the common, negative (and often wrong) theories about the lifestyle: “The process can be both beneficial and enjoyable, potentially reigniting your interest in cooking and food. Supermarkets are well-stocked with plant-based products ranging from convenience foods like veggie burgers, pies, pizzas, and ready meals to a wide array of healthy whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, pulses, nuts, pasta, rice, and bread. Next time you’re in the supermarket, take a moment to explore the fresh fruit and vegetable section, there’s more variety than ever before! And if you’re looking for inspiration on what to cook, the internet offers a wealth of recipe suggestions to suit every taste and budget.”

With Marc Levy, Chief Executive of the Jewish Representative Council
As a representative body, it is essential to be able to arrange opportunities that lead to open and forthright conversations. It is by creating this space that discussions occur that focus on strategy and collaboration. This is something our Chair, Mark Adlestone has always prioritised. His vision and bold approach
five years. Membership continues to grow and constitutes representatives from over 40 communal organisations alongside elected representatives and key stakeholders from outside our community. The latest speaker was Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett. Separately, Mark also chaired a meeting comprising of
his time with the young generation of the Jewish community, my primar y responsibility is to educate. The real challenge of my Shlichut is the understanding that my role is not just to educate towards a cer tain formal behaviour, but also to enhance and promote a par ticular feeling – ‘ahavat ha’aretz’, love of countr y
But how does one educate those feelings and more specifically, a love of Israel? As a young Israeli, a ‘chanich’ in a youth movement and a high school student who was extremely motivated before and during his army ser vice, ‘ahavat ha’aretz’ had been an instrument al value that
shaped my growing up process.
During trips throughout Israel, getting to know ever y mountain and ever y road, books and stories and traditions, have always been an integral par t of my life. The understanding that Israel is my home always motivated me to enhance my knowledge of the unique countr y that formed my identity. As the understanding and knowledge advances, a strong connection follows.
Still, the challenge remains: how does one educate young people who don’t live in Israel to love Israel and have these passionate feelings towards the Jewish state? Some argue that unconditional love is achieved once you also accept the occasional negativities.
I have the privilege to educate the younger Jewish generation to love Israel. I do so by explaining the facts. The fact that Israel is not a per fect countr y, it’s young and still growing and learning. At the same time, the Jewish state has accomplished so many achievements over that last 71 years, a fact that shouldn’t be t aken for granted.
to understand and appreciate our work. This is the second visit to engage with our community and will lead to tangible results to assist organisations who interface with the NHS. The leadership course run in conjunction with UJIA has also been a huge success and I was delighted to chair the most recent session.
All this is of direct relevance to the Jewish Community Awards, designed to celebrate those organisations and individuals who go above and beyond. There are ten categories and I encourage everyone to vote for those who deserve to be recognised for their invaluable
The people of Israel, beyond just land, make the countr y so special. From the aliyah stories of the Ethiopian Jews through the Sudanese deser t, to the food and suppor t provided to our soldiers during the Tzuk Eit an militar y operation. Israel is a countr y with good and warm people that despite having many dif ferent opinions and occasional rows, have one thing in common: to make Israel a better place. One can compare the vast disagreements to a typical Shabbos meal; seven people with eight dif ferent opinions. That’s what makes our people and countr y so beautiful and a home to so many people from dif ferent backgrounds.
We can definitely tr y to teach the facts around our countr y which, in my view, will advance ‘ahavat ha’aretz’.
I wish all the Manchester Jewish community a great and prosperous year. I am extremely happy and grateful for the privilege to be par t of this wonder ful community. I look for ward to star ting a New Year with more education and meaningful moments with the young generation about the thing I am most passionate about: Israel.
