Following the ratification of the Constitution of the United States, the Electoral College unanimously elected George Washington to serve as the United States’ first President. The former General and Commander in Chief of the Continental Army served two terms as president, holding the office from 1789 to 1797. The Coinage Act of April 2, 1792 — Commonly referred to as the Mint Act, this Act establishes the United States Mint at Philadelphia, the Nation’s capital at the time. The Mint Act called for the production of the following coins, and specified their weight in gold, silver or copper: half-cent, cent, half-dime, dime, quarter-dollar, half-dollar, dollar, quarter-eagle ($2.50), half-eagle ($5.00), and eagle ($10). Dr. Sally Ride was a physicist, astronaut, educator, and the first American woman to soar into space. “When she blasted off aboard Space Shuttle Challenger on June 18, 1983, Ride became the first American woman – and, at 32, the youngest American – in space. During the six days of mission STS-7, she deployed and retrieved a satellite with the shuttle’s robotic arm. ELY SAMUEL PARKER $1 COIN. “The 2022 Native American $1 Coin honors Ely Samuel Parker, a U.S. Army officer, engineer, and tribal diplomat, who served as military secretary to Ulysses S. Grant during the U.S. Civil War. When Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia, on the morning of April 9, 1865, Parker rendered the formal surrender documents in his own hand. The reverse (tails) design features Ely Samuel Parker, depicted in Army uniform. A quill pen and book, along with a likeness of his graceful signature, are symbols of his experience as an expert communicator. HARD TIME TOKENS (1714-1832) By Gregg Wagner PRE HARD TIME TOKEN PERIOD – “EARLY AMERICAN PERIOD 1700’S” The first token to be made in the U.S. is the 1714 Gloucester Courthouse token sometimes called a Shilling. Made of brass and manufactured by Richard Dawson of the named county. Two exist but could be a pattern since none were made of silver. It is not totally clear that early plantation tokens, Rosa, Woods Hibernia, St. Patrick’s Half Pence, etc are the first tokens, but the Courthouse is most collectors choice as the first American token. Other issues of this early period were more prolific such as: Higley copper three pence, of 1737. Made in Granby, Conn. Considered 2nd token. 4-5 figure prices. 1783 John Chalmers silver token of Maryland. 1789 Mott tokens. Third American token. Brasher Doubloon not considered a token because it had full weight of precious metal. 1793-99 silver or copper Ricketts Circus tokens. 12th and Market sts, PSFS Plaza. 1794-1795 Talbot, Alum & Lee copper cent tokens. Made by India traders at 241 Pearl St. in NYC. The Mott and Talbot, Lee, & Alum tokens were used as circulating half cents since the U.S. Mint was not in operation until 1793. The Talbot tokens were used by the Philadelphia mint as planchets. The British settlement in Kentucky had three tokens made in England. The French Castorland settlement also had tokens.
PRE HARD TIME TOKEN PERIOD (1800-1832) Russell Rulau wrote short book on this period entitled “Early American Tokens” which this period defined few tokens. The first is the New York Park Theatre ADMIT & PAID token made in 1817. In 1818 Jose Antonio de la Garza obtained permission from the military governor of San Antonio, TX to coin 8,000 “jolas” – ½ Real tokens. Large and small planchet sizes exist with 100 existing today. In 1820 the North West Company, a British fur trading company, issued one beaver tokens for use primarily in the lower Columbia River valley of Oregon. All holed and found from Indian graves except two. XF-45 highest grade. Tredwell, Kissam & Co. of New York, N.Y. issued a brass token in 1823 commemorating the opening of the New York Grand Canal, and this piece may be said to begin a series of trade tokens that has continued almost unbroken to the present day. From this point on there is such a flood of tokens that it is impossible to speak of them all; rather, the broad periods of their issue will be described, with a very few tokens selected as archetypes. The period up until 1832 is known as the Early American period. During this period a number of cent-sized store cards appeared in brass and copper.
