HERB CLAUSON Herb Clauson has been a member of the Fort Lauderdale Coin Club and of the Gold Coast Coin Club here in Florida for a very long time. Last month we celebrated Herb's 97th birthday with a delicious cake at the meeting and auction of the Fort Lauderdale Coin Club in Plantation Florida.

Herb is an avid coin collector. He relocated to south Florida in 1969. He is an active member in his community, church, and of the coin clubs. I always enjoy my conversations with Herb. He is always the first one to talk about the U.S. quarters and other coins, and his contributions to promote Young Collectors activities. Herb was born at the Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago. As a young child, he lived in Småland, Sweden with his grandparents. He holds a B.S. in Business with a minor in History. In 1952, he married Rilla Voss and had three children, Carrie, Jill, and Douglas, and has three granddaughters and four great children.

NUMISMATIC ART SHOW 2023: MY FAVORITE COIN Thank you to all the participants in the COINS IN FLORIDA Numismatic Art Show. In this open art show the participants were invited to draw or paint their favorite real or imaginary coin using the technique of their choice: Crayons, Watercolor. Gouache or Mixed Media. COINS IN FLORIDA invited the Florida artist Isabel Perez who created and exhibited her paintings inspired by the 50 State Quarters Program as a Jury for this online show together with COINS IN FLORIDA and the participating Coin Clubs and Coin Dealers supporting this outreach art project. By Gregg Wagner Wright and Bale purchased the business of Richard Trested from his widow and then James Bale continued on his own since had gone in another direction with striking tokens. In 1835 Bale went into partnership with Frederick B. Smith and together they made some of the most sought after tokens of this era. One of which was the Feuchtwanger composition cents. Bale and Smith continued to make merchant tokens for many years to come. Tokens of the period 1833 - 1844 are known as Hard Times Tokens, a name given them by Lyman H. Low in 1886 in his book of that title. "Hard Times" certainly resulted from the Panic of 1837, when specie payments were suspended, and many of these tokens have reference - often satirical - to the events of this period. But the term has now grown to encompass any token minted during this period, even if it is merely a store card, and is now simply a convenience for collectors. The majority of these tokens actually circulated as cents (and, in one instance, as a half cent), including the store cards. The pieces attacking President Jackson (portrayed as a wild boar or a jackass) are quite common in worn condition. From 1845 - 1860 the series of U.S. merchant tokens continued much as it had in the late "Hard Times" period. Commercial types prevailed; there was very little of the political satire of the 1830's. Counterstamped advertisements on cents and silver coins increased greatly during this period, one of the most common being the VOTE THE LAND FREE slogan of the Free Soil Party in 1848.
By Ariel Kwacz PLEDGES OF ALLEGIANCE OR “JURAS DE FIDELIDAD” It is also necessary to refer to the oaths of fidelity that, on the occasion of the proclamation of new Kings in Spain, were coined in the Mint of Potosi, starting in 1789 with the reign of Carlos IV. The city of La Plata, Seat of the Royal Audience of Charcas, had the mint manufacture a silver oath that has on the obverse the bust of Carlos IV wearing the necklace of Golden Fleece, surrounded by the inscription "CAROLUS IV HISP ET IND R". The reverse shows a double-headed eagle with crowns, castles, columns, and the inscription 'OPTIMO PRINC PUBLICE FIDELIT JURAT', - public oath of allegiance to the to the excellent monarch -. Potosi commissioned a similar piece with obverse identical to the oath of La Plata; the reverse shows the Cerro Rico flanked by the Pillars of Hercules and crowned with a double-headed eagle. The inscription is identical to the oath of La Plata. In 1808, with the accession of Fernando VII to the throne, La Plata and Potosi ordered oaths of fidelity to Fernando. The oath of La Plata shows on the reverse the same figures of the oath to Charles VI but the obverse has a completely different design. Alejandro Rosa, in his work “Estudios Numismaticos, Aclamaciones de Monarcas Catolicos en el Nuevo Mundo”, published in 1894, makes the following description of the symbology: "... we note a direct allusion against Joseph Bonaparte, aka Pepe Botella, because with this proclamation he could dispel his illusions of being King of Spain and Emperor of the Indies, which is what the rampant symbolizes when he rests his right paw on the emblematic castle, while with the left, he preys on the dying eagle, to which the Crown of Spain has torn away" The Potosi oath shows on the obverse the same symbology used in the oath of Charles IV, which shows Cerro Rico. The simple reverse shows the inscription "POTOSI PRO FERDINANDO VII ANNO 1808".

To conclude, I want to highlight a piece that the municipality of Potosi offered to Brigadier José Manuel de Goyeneche and that in my opinion, constitutes the piece with the longest and most important Latin inscriptions that the Potosi Mint ever 6 produced.
