I started in 2009, when I retired from Teaching Junior HighandMiddleSchoolfor37years.

As a retired teacher you have combined your experience with numismatic, what has been your experiencewiththeyoungcollectors?

The husband of a teacher I worked with for many years was retired and in the coin clubs. When I retired, I started going to the coin clubs meetings and shows. When he died in 2012, his wife gave me all his Lincoln cents that he kept in coin wrappers by date and mint marks. In his memory, I started the Young Collectors Fund.

About the young collectors program at the school here inHollywood?

A group of us started giving presentations at a Elementary School in their after-school program about Cents one year, Nickels the next year and Dimes the third year to Third, Fourth and Fifth graders. That interest allowed us to start a Coin Club in the after care program for the same age groups. We have been doing the Coin Club for 7 years now and the presentationsfor11years.

I have seen people donating numismatic items for the young collectors tables. Can they bring them at the coinshows?Howcantheyreachyou?

Many people have donated items to me for the Young Collectors, some I give to the Children and others I sale to raise money for keeping the Young Collectors table for items for the Children. Some parents are so happy for what we are doing they donate money also to us. I get free items from the ANA, our State FUN club, the US Mint,WhitmanPublishingandothers.

What would you like to recommend to other Coin Clubs to motivate the children and teens to begin their coin collection?

What are the numismatic activities that the children like doingthemost?

I like to start them on the Lincoln cent. They like finding the coins and putting them into their folders. We give free folders at our shows, one per show. The folders are donated to us and some are from the School Coin Club.

What has been your experience with the Young Collectors Tables at the coin shows both in Hollywood andFortLauderdale?

At our Young Collectors table it is fun to see the Children excited as we give them a copy of a 1899 Dollar Bill with info about both clubs meeting and show dates and times. They can give us that bill to purchase any of the coins from our table. And also seeing the parent or grandparents excited to see their children startingorcontinuingahobby.

I would recommend that either they have a table for Young Collectors or encourage the vendors to have itemsforYoungCollectors.

BTW, at the Gold Coast Coin Club meeting you just mentioned to us that one of your students works at The Mint!

At the January FUN Show several years ago I was getting some quarters from the US Mint coin machine and one of the young ladies at the table said I look familiar, so talking to her I learned that she was one of my 6th grade students from a Middle School in Pembroke Pines and was working now at the Mint in PublicRelations.

THE HISTORY OF SAN FRANCISCO MINT

INTRODUCTION

Sutter’s Mill. James W. Marshall (contractor) built a water powered sawmill for John S. Sutter (landowner) on the S.fork of American River in present day Coloma, California; 30 miles NE of Sacramento. (*)

On January 24th, 1848 Marshall saw something gleaming out of the water next to the construction site. He performed tests and it was gold!! The Gold strike produced 2 Billion dollars which peaked in 1852 and California became a state (Sept. 9th, 1850) because of 100k influx of miners.

To support the new economy legal tender was needed to support financial transactions. President Millard Fillmore recommended a coining facility which was approved by Congress in 1852.

Before the Mint could be constructed, Augustus Humbert of United States Assay Office, Norris, Gregg, & Norris, Moffat & Company, Wass, Molitor & Co., Kellogg & Co. etc. became Private or Territorial Mints. Fractionals Gold coins became pressed into service as well those made in California.

USAO was a bridge to the first S.F. Mint run by Augustus Humbert and arrived in S.F in 1851. Humbert lived in NYC. John Moffat & Co. established in 1849. The Moffat building became the first U.S. Mint. Moffat & Company (Joe Curtis, Philo Perry, & Sam Ward) was much better at the business than Humbert who was a watchmaker.

CALIFORNIAPIONEERGOLDCOINS

Made before or just after 1854 there are many companies and individuals whom minted coins and ingots.

Denominations are $5, $10, $20, and fifty dollar coins. Moffat & Company made ingots valued at $9.43, $14.25, and $16 dollars all stamped or coined as such.

The S.S. Central America treasure was a study in California Gold ingots as so few existed up to the ship’s discovery. These are not regular issues like Moffat and Company pieces.

Fractional’s also existed starting in 1852. These became illegal in 1864 but was not enforced until later. These were considered souvenirs in later years and the gold content decreased as time wore on until some were just gold plated.

They existed in Quarter dollar, Half Dollar, Dollar rounds and octagnels except for quarters that are in rounds only.

ORIGINAL SAN FRANCISCO MINT AND SUB TREASURY USAO(1854)

Opened for operation April 3, 1854. Dr. L. A. Birdsall was the first superintendent; J. Huston, first minter; and A. Haraszthy, first assayer.

First U.S. Mint was the old USAO Building run by Humbert as Assayer. But was very small by Mint facility standards and lack of refining chemicals limited production. Also lack of security, Conflict of interest among officers were problems.

The USAO was located at 608 Commercial Street just west of Montgomery St. water had been coming in a high tide and they had to move. The building was the Moffat and Company. Group of Moffat, Kellogg, Curtis, Perry, & Ward, produced only $4 Million in face value coins in first year, 1854. First year coins were, Gold Dollars (14,632), Quarter Eagles (246), Half Eagles (268), Eagles (123,826), and Double Eagles (141,468).

The first Mint ceased operation in 1874, in favor of the 2nd San Francisco Mint.

Converted to a U.S. Treasury sub office. In 1875 the old Mint structure was demolished and a new four story Treasury building built.

First U. S. Mint top floors had burned during S.F. fire of 1906 caused by the earthquake. It was rebuilt as a one story brick building its original basement. Today first floor (Pacific Heritage museum) and basement exists with the Bank of Canton was built on top of the building. 6
