Kgotsi Meintjies,Lejweleputswa:
There comes a time in the life of every community when the people look around and realise that things can not continue as they are
In Lejweleputswa, that moment arrived long ago - yet the pain, the frustration, the exhaustion continues to deepen
Every day, ordinary families wake up to taps that run dry, streets swallowed by potholes, refuse piling on corners, and streetlights that have not shone in years
Parents watch their children walk to school through unsafe, neglected neighbourhoods Small businesses - considered the heartbeat of our towns - close their doors because infrastructure keeps on failing them
These are not just “service delivery challenges”
These are lived realities that chip away at the dignity of our people
Our district is hurting And at the centre of that hurt lies a simple truth: Lejweleputswa deserves leadership that cares enough to fix what is broken
For years, communities have been promised improvement, yet the municipality continues to slide backward People are tired - tired of excuses, tired of instability, tired of leadership that arrives with slogans but disappears when accountability is needed most
We do not need leaders who chase positions
We need leaders who carry the weight of our struggles on their shoulders
As the district stands on the brink of yet another leadership transition, we cannot afford to get it
wrong again
This moment demands a leader who brings more than political credentials - someone with heart, integrity, competence, and the courage to confront dysfunction head-on
Lejweleputswa needs a leader who understands what it feels like for a grandmother to wait days for water
A leader who feels the frustration of a business owner who can not operate because the municipality has collapsed
A leader who sees our young people searching for opportunity in a district that has lost its direction
The people of Lejweleputswa are not asking for miracles
They are asking for basic, reliable, dignified service delivery - the kind every community deserves
And so this is an appeal to every resident, every civic group, every person who still believes this district can be saved: When leadership nominations come, choose with your heart, but also with your conscience Choose someone credible, capable, committed, and genuinely devoted to the people
Lejweleputswa is crying out for a leader who will steady the ship, restore hope, and rebuild trust between the municipality and the community We cannot keep patching wounds while ignoring the cause
The district needs healing - and this healing can only begin with true leadership
Lejweleputswa deserves better It is time to stand together and demand it
Nothing has yet been done about the hazardous working conditions that the workers at the Free State Department of Education in Welkom are compelled to work under
The department is currently situated in a rented building in Bok Street (the old Woolworths building)
According to a source in the Free State Department of Education who would like to remain anonymous, this volatile situation is an accident waiting to happen
He says the structure that houses vital education offices and which is daily frequented by dozens of staff members, learners, and visitors is reportedly in a dire state of disrepair
“Cracked walls, faulty wiring, water leaks, and visible structural damage paint a picture of neglect and danger
“According to concerned insiders, the building’s condition is so severe that it could take just one heavy storm or a single electrical fault to turn this into a tragedy”
Staff members have raised alarms about
collapsing ceilings, malfunctioning fire safety equipment, and unstable staircases
“We work here every day not knowing if the roof will hold or if a fire will break out,” said one employee, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal
What makes the situation even more concerning is that the building is not owned by the department, but rented at a significant cost to taxpayers
The department is spending public money on a property that could potentially claim lives, a contradiction to its mandate to protect and serve the province’s learners and educators
Community safety activists are calling for immediate action
This includes urgent structural inspection by independent engineers, the relocation of staff to a safe facility whilst repairs or alternative arrangements are made In addition to that, the call for action asks for transparency from the Department of Education on why such a building was chosen and what steps are being taken
Staff are working under sagging ceilings, alongside exposed wires, broken fire equipment, and staircases that shake underfoot
Sources say a full investigation into how this hazardous site was approved must be done
“Every day this building stays open is another gamble with human lives And if disaster does hit, the Free State Education bosses will have nowhere to hide,” says the source
According to a letter from a concerned Matjhabeng employee that was directed to the Department of Education, building plans to convert the retail space into office space were never submitted for approval to the Matjhabeng Local Municipality
“This is a serious contravention of the law I am concerned that it does not have adequate lighting, ventilation, and therefore poses a serious health risk
“There are no adequate fire escape routes as well,” he says Vista sent an email to the Department of Education; it came back undelivered

The Welkom Regional Court has found Charles Matthias Titus (44) guilty on multiple charges following the rape of two minor victims, and sentenced him to two terms of life imprisonment
The court heard how on 24 August 2019 the two female victims, aged 13 and 14, were lured by the convicted Titus while they were watching a netball match at an open field at the Dubai squatter camp in Bronville
Titus requested to send them to the local tuckshop
Upon their return from the tuckshop they went to the accused's shack where he prepared food for them to eat While at the shack the accused locked the door, took a knife from the drawer and threatened the victims
He further tied them up with shoelaces and put socks in their mouths before taking turns and repeatedly raping them
The victims reported the incident to
their elders, and a case of rape was then registered for further investigation Titus was subsequently arrested for rape
The case was assigned to Sgt Themba Jilimba of the Thabong Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit
Through his extensive investigation he ensured that the accused was denied bail until the commencement of his trial
Titus was found guilty and sentenced to two life sentences on counts 1 and 2 of rape in addition to 10 years' imprisonment for counts 3 and 4 of compelling or causing children to witness a sexual offence or act
The court ordered that the sentences in counts 2, 3 and 4 run concurrently with the sentence in count 1
It was further ordered that the convict's name be included in the register for sexual offences or sex offenders, and that Titus will be prohibited from working with children

Urgent intervention by the Free State Department of Roads and Transport is needed as roads begin to pose a direct threat to residents, road users, and the provincial economy
The provincial oversight committee will be approached to stabilise the department, protect public funds, and prevent the total collapse of critical road infrastructure services in the Free State
“The Auditor-General’s (AG) findings remain heavily concentrated on persistent non-compliance with legislation, weak financial management, and an alarming deterioration in the department’s financial health,” says Jafta Mokoena, DA spokesperson for Roads and Transport in the Free State Legislature
He says the department is now in a near-insolvent position, unable to meet even its most basic financial obligations Its cash shortfall has worsened to R751 million, up from R678 million, leaving it unable to pay its bills
Future payables have escalated to a staggering R1 267 billion, more than double the previous year ’ s R567 million, signalling a severe risk to the department’s viability
“Compounding the crisis,

claims against the department have doubled, rising to R722 million from R362 million, leaving the department vulnerable to litigation from contractors and service providers who have not been paid “These failures directly delay or collapse road maintenance and construction projects, leaving communities to bear the consequences of deteriorating infrastructure, unsafe travel conditions, and disrupted eco-
