A NEW chapter in local business development is underway as the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber officially launches the Entrepreneur Programme, in partnership with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) and the iLembe Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism
This is aimed at strengthening the foundation and competitiveness of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Nelson Mandela Bay

Running over seven weeks, the programme provides participants with structured training, one-on-one mentorship, and exposure to seasoned business leaders From customer segmentation to systems thinking, each session is designed to refine business models, enhance value offerings, and address operational blind spots
To ensure impact, strict criteria apply Businesses must be:
Registered and active in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro
Operational for at least 12 months, Owned and led full-time by the applicant, Legally registered and tax compliant (or working
towards compliance),
Willing to attend in-person sessions weekly at the Chamber's offices
Participation requires commitment; this is not a passive programme Selected entrepreneurs must complete assignments, engage in mentorship, and submit a comprehensive business plan that will serve as the basis for final adjudication
Finalists will have the opportunity to showcase their businesses, with winners receiving targeted business development funding However, prize allocation is not automatic Disbursement will be based on mentor recommendations, business plan viability, and adherence to programme expectations, ensuring resources go only where they can generate measurable impact

A THREE-DAY Metropolitan Police Commissioners’ Forum was recently held in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, hosted by the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL)
The gathering brought together commissioners from all metros, including Nelson Mandela Bay, Tshwane, Johannesburg, eThekwini, Mangaung and Cape Town, to review and enhance law enforcement strategies in South Africa SANRAL opened the session with a detailed presentation showcasing their work, highlighting cutting-edge technology such as CCTV cameras and traffic detectors
These tools enabled real-time road monitoring, swift incident detection, and efficient road incident management
In a statement, the NMBM said the presentation highlighted SANRAL’s commitment to collaborative efforts with law enforcement agencies, focusing on how their services could support and enhance road safety initiatives and community protection
During the forum, SANRAL highlighted the alarming rate of theft and vandalism of traffic infrastructure, including
traffic lights and signals
This problem has significantly contributed to a rise in road fatalities, prompting the agency to explore effective solutions to curb vandalism and enhance road safety
The Metropolitan Police Commissioners’ Forum focused on training collaboration between the South African Police Services (SAPS), the Municipal Metropolitan Police Services and the Road Traffic Management Corporation
Key areas discussed included training programmes for metro police members, technical research and uniform standards
The panel revisited key training initiatives from previous meetings, including the development of an entry-level managerial course for Municipal Police Services and the establishment of municipal standards for MPD 9 and mounted services
Representatives from Motorola Solutions joined the panel to explore technical research initiatives to enhance road and community safety
These included leveraging CCTV footage for accident capture, automated incident reporting to emergency services, and monitoring vehicles and individuals
that violated traffic laws
The forum noted that these efforts would greatly benefit the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in eliminating crime and promoting safety across the Metro
On the second day, hosted at Coega IDZ, key stakeholders in attendance, including the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security, Councillor
Luyanda Lawu, Metro Police Commissioner, Advocate Andrew Moses, Metro Police Colonel, Raquel Paulsen, Metro Police Colonel, Mlindi Mangwane, and commissioners from various provinces across South Africa
In his remarks, the MMC emphasised the importance of tackling crime in the metro, highlighting the need for innovative strategies to drive down crime statistics
Key discussion points among the commissioners included strategic interventions to enhance local policing standards, as well as initiatives to standardise training, leverage research, and harness technical expertise

One of these projects is SANRAL's Freeway Management System (FMS), a network of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) that actively manages and monitors freeways to improve safety, efficiency, and traveller information
It utilises technologies like CCTV, variable message signs (VMS), and traffic detectors to monitor traffic flow, detect incidents, and provide real-time information to road users
The FMS is designed to reduce delays, improve congestion management, and contribute to safer roads
At the time, Creecy outlined her optimism for the area’s future: “This is about long-term impact safer roads, stronger communities, and a thriving economy ” The FMS is a groundbreaking project and the first of its kind in the province It enables SANRAL to monitor road conditions in real time, respond promptly to incidents, and provide live updates to motorists, enhancing road safety

THE Roads and Transport Directorate has officially commenced rehabilitation work on the Matanzima Bridge in KwaNobuhle, Kariega
This initiative forms part of the Nelson Man-
dela Bay Municipality s Disaster Recovery Programme
The work in progress is to demolish the damaged concrete floor slabs, divert the river to enable embankment trimming, and construct an access road
The department will also prepare works for
backfilling, remove excess material under the bridge, trim the embankment, and prepare for crack sealing
Senior Director of Roads and Transport, Givon Van Eyck, said, "Contractors were appointed on April 9, 2025 The lead contractors are Power Construction and Empa Structures "
He added that the project is projected to take approximately six months to complete The metro shared, "This critical infrastructure recovery project is a testament to the municipality's commitment to restoring and improving essential transport links in the region "

IN a demonstration of environmental stewardship, Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) commemorated International Biodiversity Day on Friday, May 30, with a tree-planting initiative
The tree-planting activity underscores the company’s commitment to protecting and enhancing biodiversity, both within the plant and in the wider Kariega community
“This year’s tree-planting event is particularly significant as it marks the launch of VWGA’s biodiversity strategy, which includes preserving and restoring rare and critically endangered species found on our property,” said Ntsapokazi Ningiza, Environmental Sustainability Manager at VWGA
Two of these species, namely Delosperma hollandii, located near the VWGA Test Track and Component Plant, and Trichodiadema stayneri, also found within the Test Track area, are potentially extinct Meanwhile, Tritonia dubia, identified in the Production Development facility, is classified as a threatened species
In addition to protecting these rare species, the tree-planting initiative introduced new indigenous trees to Plant Kariega, including White Milkwood,
Wild Plum, Cross Berry, and the Cape Ash
These contribute to VWGA’s plans to establish an arboretum, which will host
a variety of indigenous trees, enriching biodiversity and promoting ecological balance

Also present at the tree-planting initiative was Luc Strydom, a Principal Ecologist at Coastal and Environmental Services, commissioned by VWGA in 2024 to conduct a species identification across all locations at Plant Kariega
His report confirmed the presence of three rare and critically endangered species at Plant Kariega
“When VWGA asked me to carry out a species assessment, I was thrilled to discover these rare species These species face potential extinction due to habitat loss caused by urbanisation and industrial development, and the specimens found on these premises must be protected to preserve biodiversity and maintain healthy ecosystems
“I am equally encouraged by the company’s commitment to biodiversity,” said Strydom
BUSISWA Stokwe, the Vice President of the Nobuhle and Despatch Football Association (NODEFA) joined a youth development programme championed by the Department of Community Safety in partnership with SAPS and CPF recently
The campaign sought to instil discipline in learners by encouraging them to participate in sport and stay away from drugs, alcohol and crime
As part of the initiative, Tinarha Secondary School in KwaNobuhle was presented with football and netball kits along with balls, donated by the Department of Community Safety
During the handover event, Stokwe delivered a message of support on behalf of NODEFA, encouraging learners to participate in football beyond their school years, particularly through organised and recognised structures
She emphasised that these formal sporting organisations represented the only platform through which their dreams of playing for national teams could be realised
"Participation in organised sports provides structure, discipline and opportunity," Stokwe said during her address to the students
"These qualities are essential not only for athletic success but for life beyond the playing field "
NODEFA's Molefi Sello said in conclusion,
"We hope the collaboration between NODEFA, the Department of Community Safety, SAPS and CPF is the clear demonstration of a unified approach to addressing youth challenges through positive engagement in sporting activities "
Last year, the UD Express reported that one of the key goals of NODEFA is to create a sustainable football development pathway for young people in the region, offering opportunities for both recreational and competitive play
The association plans to organise regular events and training sessions for participants of all ages, promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and leadership skills

SUZUKI is on a roll with new product launches and this month it is the turn of their AB sedan segment market leader, the Dzire, which is India's best-selling sedan After 11 years on our market, we are getting a new body, new engine, new platform – the new Dzire sub-compact from Suzuki is geared up to obliterate the opposition
Not only is the pricing really sharp, but the specification on the GL+ is excellent and, in addition, rear legroom is good and the boot is big, for the AB segment of the market
For the launch, we drove a long loop from Rosebank south of Johannesburg, and back to the Digital Dome at Wits going via the old prison for women at Constitution Hill for lunch A good mix of city traffic and open road Undoubtedly the Dzire will make an excellent small company car, as the boot just gives one more security for bags and other high value articles
This new Dzire is very good-looking from all angles, even a little sporty – especially at the back
The interior has been upgraded and offers all the essential items, even power points and a vent for the rear Two things which I don t like much are the 7" touchscreen in a housing big enough for a 9" screen and the light upholstery, but both are highly subjective Still, a pleasant cabin with comfortable seats and a feeling of space The GL+ variant has cruise control,
a reverse camera and a digital air conditioner
The boot is, in fact, 100 L bigger than that of the Swift
This little sedan has the same Z12E three-cylinder turbo mill and gearboxes as the Swift Suzuki claims a fuel consumption of 4 4 L/100 km, but I think 5 or just above 5 is more realistic I would say there is adequate power, but performance is not so sprightly

The only issues I found were the very light cream interior upholstery and, at altitude, the engine is working hard, requiring a lot of gear changing At the coast, this is not an issue
The Dzire is built in India for the sub-continent and surrounding markets, which means that their tastes in upholstery and specifications are not always 100% the same as ours
Unfortunately, we are such a small mar-
ket that it is not always possible to supply us with our first choice and as a result we have the very light upholstery for the moment
If sales justify it, they will supply a more suitable colour for our market In the showroom the light interior gives an impression of lightness and space so it might just appeal to private buyers The specification of our version differs quite a bit from the Indian home market
Styling is more restrained with less use of chrome for our cars We get a CVT instead of their AMT, we lose the leather steering wheel, sunroof, 360 camera, wireless charging and get a more basic infotainment system W e still get all the basics with cruise control, automatic climate control with rear AC vents, and a multi-info display Crucially, six airbags, ESC, rear parking sensors, and ISOFIX mounts are standard across the range
The new Dzire enjoys a five-star adult and four-star child occupant protection Indian NCAP rating It indeed has all the safety kit one would expect
The direct competition is the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Grand i10, and Kia Pegas, but all are more expensive, being R25 000 to R50 000 more VW's Polo sedan is R100 000 more
The base GA 5MT is R224 900, the GL+ 5MT R246 900, and the CVT version R266 900 I would recommend the CVT model
The Dzire has a 5-year/200,000 km promotional warranty and includes a 4-year/60,000 km service plan
