Clerk recalls harrowing crash

BarendWilliams

A 63-year-old Gordon’s Bay resident is suffering flashbacks and sleepless nights after sustaining slight injuries in a collision during a high-speed chase on Friday 11 July

Mogamat Salie Gasnodien was heading to work when a speeding Mercedes-Benz, which was being pursued by armed response officers, rammed into his Daihatsu hatchback on Faure Marine Drive at 06:40

The two occupants of the Mercedes-Benz hatchback, suspected abalone smugglers, were apprehended following the collission (“Two suspects nabbed in Gordon’s Bay chase, abalone seized”, DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 11 July)

Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says armed security officers of Gordon’s Bay Security (GBSec) were pursing the Mercedes-Benz in the direction of Strand when the latter collided ded with Gasnodien’s stationary vehicle

He confirms two suspects, aged 24 and 14, abandoned the car and fled the scene, with police officers joining in on the pursuit The two were eventually netted and arrested for abalone possession

Gasnodien, a Strand municipal clerk, says he left home earlier that morning to attend to work matters

He recalls the roads being

quiet as he turned onto Faure Marine Drive from Lemoenboom Road, and his vehicle was struck – contrary to the police comment stating that his vehicle as stationary

“I would never have imaged that I would be involved in an incident like this,” says Gasnodien, who lost control of the vehicle that was bumped onto the central median

“The vehicle grazed a pole and knocked a tree, before landing on the opposite side of the road ”

He recalls a GBSec officer helping him from his wrecked vehicle to the pavement

The collision left Gasnodien disoriented “I turned to the officer and asked: ‘Did someone bump into me?’”

Emergency personnel transported Gasnodien to a local hospital for treatment of whiplash, severely bruised ribs and a bruised knee He was discharged around 11:00 the same day

Gasnodien’s wife, Bashma, raced to the scene after hearing of the incident from the couple’s daughter.

“I was devastated, but knew I had to stay focused I can’t thank God enough for this [situation], because it could have been 10 times worse ”

The ordeal has traumatised the Gasnodiens, who recently lost a family matriarch

“After seeing the accident photos, I am haunted by flashbacks of the near-dear experience,” Gasnodien shares

He, however, notes that he was oblivious to the collision being the result of a high-speed chase

“As I was seated on the pavement, I saw two guys with their hands cable-tied, being led away by authorities But I still didn’t know what was going on ”

Van Wyk confirms the two suspects appeared in the Strand Magistrates’ Court on Monday (14 July) on charges of abalone possession

Thobile Zulu-Molobi, spokesperson for the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), confirms 525 units of abalone, weighing 71,3 kg were confiscated

“The total value of the abalone is estimated at R130 716,43,” she says Zulu-Molobi points out that arrests and confiscation of illegally transported abalone are common in the Helderberg

“The confiscated abalone is

likely to originate from the Overberg region and is then transported to the Helderberg area,” she says Zulu-Molobi confirms the confiscated abalone will be disposed of in accordance with the Marine Living Resources Act 18 of 1998 and DFFE departmental policy

She adds that abalone poaching has a severe and far-reaching effect on South African coastal waters, as abalone plays a critical ecological role

“Abalone poaching could result in the collapse of abalone stocks, habitat degradation, a decline of natural predators and biodiversity, and ecological changes ” DFFE urges the public to report illegal activities to the department on 0800 205 005

When reporting, residents must provide full details of the complaint, including location, dates, times, names of involved parties and any additional information

Hawk rescued after calls for help

When an injured bird needed urgent help, a local resident was called upon to assist in a dire situation that quickly evolved into a powerful display of community collaboration.

This collective effort not only saved the bird’s life but also profoundly impacted the resident, restoring his faith for a better tomorrow.

Riël Tredoux recalls immediately putting shoulder to the wheel after being alerted to the injured Black Sparrowhawk spotted in the Dick Dent Bird Sanctuary in Somerset West by fellow resident Wayne Ellis last Wednesday (9 July). “I’m an acquaintance of Wayne, and I’m pretty sure he has me down as ‘Birdman’ in his phone That’s because Hernus, my neighbour, and I are constantly out in the reserve, cameras in hand, capturing birds,” he says.

“So when Wayne stumbled upon the injured hawk, he first rang Charles Brits, who unfortunately couldn’t assist. Charles, being a fellow Somerset West Bird Club member, knew I’m a regular at Dick Dent – it’s barely a five-minute walk from my house – so he redirected the call to me for assistance.

“So I met Wayne at his home, and he led me to the injured bird It was an adult Black Sparrowhawk, sitting with a clearly injured wing – likely the Dick Dent resident I’d photographed before. I immediately started phoning around,

pulling numbers from my contacts until I was referred to Kyle Girodo of the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) Helderberg.”

According to Tredoux, Girodo immediately responded, arriving at the scene, equipped for the mission at hand, within 20 minutes.

“Kyle arrived with a ‘vangnet’, a handheld net designed for safe capture However, the terrain, littered with dead Port Jackson trees, became our first obstacle; the bird continually dodged under branches, making a net throw impossible,” Tredoux says.

“As it moved from trees to the ground, seeking cover, we had to adapt: I became the chaser, flushing the bird towards Kyle, who waited, net poised. The hawk even made a dash for the neighbouring Strand Golf Course, with Kyle in hot pursuit across a drainage ditch, only to double back It took some nifty footwork, but we finally apprehended the injured bird, despite its remaining mobility.”

Though the rescue duo expected a panicked reaction, the majestic raptor remained remarkably calm once gently placed in a cat carrier. Seeing the bird of prey up close was “exhilarating to say the least”, Tredoux shares, lamenting not having his proper camera equipment to capture the moment.

According to Girodo, the bird rescue was initiated at 11:40 and was successfully completed about an hour later. The hawk was safely captured and transported to AWS Helderberg, where Dr Gareth Baine conducted X-rays which confirmed

the wing was not broken. The bird is now recovering at a rehabilitation facility.

Asked how rewarding it is to know that, thanks to everyone’s swift actions, the bird’s prognosis is good, Tredoux responds: “Amazingly rewarding I would have been devastated if we had gone through the trouble and then it had to be euthanised.”

He further highlights the experience to underscore the importance of a robust support network, acknowledging that not all communities may have the same access or knowledge of who to contact.

“The fact that I could reach out and immediately get a response from AWS Helderberg means future rescues, not just for birds, are a reality. It shows that community members can get assistance in delicate situations. Knowing these guys certainly gives me hope for the future. Thanks to the efforts of Wayne, Charles and Kyle, there is the possibility that this magnificent bird of prey will grace the sky above Dick Dent again.”

Tredoux emphasises that the key lesson for future bird rescues is assembling the right expertise. The recent effort, he notes, succeeded due to the knowledgeable individuals involved. He believes bird enthusiasts and clubs already possess, or can connect with, the knowledge to aid conservation.

Tredoux urges the community to seek out information on local wildlife and contacts for assistance, ensuring they know who to call for help.

When Wayne Ellis spotted an injured Black Sparrowhawk in Dick Dent Bird Sanctuary, a collaborative rescue effort involving local bird enthusiast Riël Tredoux and Animal Welfare Society’s Kyle Girodo (pictured) successfully captured for medical treatment – demonstrating the power of community networks in wildlife conservation.

SLP River ready for rain runoff

With winter rains upon us, critical pre-season maintenance at the Sir Lowry’s Pass River in Gordon’s Bay has been completed

This vital intervention, part of year-round efforts by the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate, significantly reduces flood risks and boosts water quality, preparing the area for the current wet season

The Sir Lowry’s Pass River originates at an elevation of around 1 200 m above sea level in the Hottentots Holland Mountain Nature Reserve

The river is approximately 12 km long The City’s Catchment Stormwater and River Management (CSRM) branch recently conducted a cleaning-up of this river, among several others, to ensure efficient flow of water and prevent blockages

On Friday 13 June, the project was concluded at a cost of R150 000

“Working to clear the Sir Lowry’s Pass River has been crucial for this season, while the R214 million Sir Lowry’s Pass River upgrade project is underway,” says Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee member for Water and Sanitation

“The long-term upgrades are designed to significantly advance the river’s flood risk

for the future For now the City will continue to conduct a proactive and ongoing river maintenance programme ”

Badroodien adds that the project includes the removal of alien vegetation, litter and debris along key sections of the river “Special attention was given to clearing vegetation around the head-wall structure to allow for proper inspection and maintenance access ”

In addition, mechanical plant clearing was undertaken to remove accumulated silt from the riverbed to improve stormwater flow and reduce the risk of localised flooding All cuttings and debris will be disposed of at a legal dumping site

“Through ongoing and planned maintenance our aim is to improve the quality of all inland water bodies,” Badroodien says “It also allows us to be best prepared to manage higher water volumes along the City’s waterways, as the rainy winter season progresses ”

During the 2024-’25 financial year CSRM carried out eight maintenance initiatives in the Sir Lowry’s Pass River at a total cost of R900 000

Aside from improving river health and flow capacity, the programme also supported local economic development by creating 60 temporary job opportunities

Artist’s ode to rugby greats

JameyGordon

Dennis Woest’s latest project represents far more than just artwork; it’s “a sense of pride and my way of capturing South African history in a positive light”

The Somerset West artist has embarked on an ambitious artistic tribute to the country’s rugby heritage, creating large-scale oil portraits of Springbok Rugby World Cup-winning captains Francois Pienaar, John Smit and Siya Kolisi The undertaking aims to immortalise these rugby heroes, celebrating the nation’s sporting legacy through art

Each impressive canvas is personally signed by the rugby legends on both the front and back, authenticating these valuable commemorative pieces

The project has already gained significant recognition, with Rand Merchant Bank acquiring the Siya Kolisi portrait for their London office. The Francois Pienaar painting is currently available, strategically timed to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Springboks’ iconic 1995 Rugby World Cup victory

NATIONALPRIDE

Asked about the project’s goal, Woest says he aimed to capture “national pride in a visual, emotional and celebratory way”

He discovered his artistic talent at age five, teaching himself to draw through comic books

His ability gained early recognition when his Grade 4 teacher asked him to illustrate lessons on the blackboard for Tex chocolate-bar rewards By high school he would skip bookkeeping classes to spend time in the art room

Since turning professional in 2016 Woest’s career has been deeply connected to music

He began with local musicians, drawing from his 1980s experience creating album covers for artists including E-Void, Johnny Clegg, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Chicko Woest’s reputation attracted international subjects such as Brian Ferry, Santana, Robert Smith and Sting

It was commissions for John Smit and Jake White portraits that sparked a focus on rugby legends

CAPTURINGHISTORY

He recognised he was “capturing history in the making” Woest’s technique is a simplified approach, working exclusively in oils, using photos, with charcoal sketches, applying a random acrylic wash to “activate the canvas” then completing with oils

on a 125 cm × 90 cm canvas, the largest he can transport Woest aims to expand the collection beyond just captains, to include all Springbok legends by the 2027 Rugby World Cup

To realise this vision, he is actively seeking sponsorship or investment to support this comprehensive celebration of South African rugby excellence

“With four Rugby World Cup titles behind us (1995, 2007, 2019 and 2023), and the next tournament approaching in 2027, this is the perfect time to honour our national heroes, and to do so in a way that connects powerfully with South Africans ”

He envisages exhibiting the complete collection at The Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch or the gallery at Cavalli Wine Estate along the R44
