The City of Cape Town is calling on residents and all interested parties to comment on its updated draft Traffic Calming Policy The public participation process opened on Friday 15 August and will close on Saturday 13 September.
The draft policy outlines guidelines that will assist the City in assessing and managing applications for traffic calming measures (such as speed bumps and road signage) across the metro
According to Mikhail Manuel, chair of the Urban Mobility Portfolio Committee, the policy reflects input received during the City’s previous public consultation efforts
“The draft 2025 Traffic Calming Policy proposes the widest set of sustainable parameters to date by which the City can use traffic calming measures to make our roads safer for all users,” said Manuel
“The Urban Mobility Directorate was inspired by the public input during the Call for Ideas campaign We thank the public for their innovative concepts and call on the citizens of Cape Town to engage with this draft policy proposal ”
Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayco member for urban mobility, emphasised that the policy aims to safeguard the most vulnerable “Key objectives of the draft policy include establishing a sustainable programme that protects the most vulnerable road users, especially where they are most at risk, and recognises roadways as public assets meant for all users,” said Quintas

The draft policy introduces several significant updates:
.Greater flexibility to accommodate environmental differences, especially in high-pedestrian areas, through policy exceptions;
.Expanded scope for the design and implementation of traffic calming measures, under the City’s oversight;
.An increase in the baseline number of traffic calming interventions per financial year; and
.Proactive planning for traffic calming in new developments and land use applications
“The policy is designed to make it possible for traffic calming measures to be implemented in more scenarios than previously; while continuing to prioritise schools, walking routes in their vicinity and other public facilities,” Manuel added Printed submission forms are available at local subcouncil offices and City libraries, where the draft policy can also be viewed

The SU analytical chemists have provided the first evidence of a rare class of phenolics, called flavoalkaloids, in cannabis leaves Phenolic compounds, especially flavonoids, are well-known and sought after in the pharmaceutical industry because of their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties
The researchers identified 79 phenolic compounds in three strains of cannabis grown commercially in South Africa, of which 25 were reported for the first time Sixteen of these were tentatively identified as flavoalkaloids which, interestingly, were found mainly in the leaves of only one of the strains The results were published in the Journal of Chromatography A recently

Classical music returns
Classical music lovers are in for a treat as the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) unveils a vibrant new season of four Spring Symphony concerts at the Cape Town City Hall. Running from Thursday 28 August to Thursday 18 September, this series promises a rich blend of classical masterpieces, contemporary works, and exciting premieres.
The season will be led by internationally renowned conductors Daniel Raiskin and Martin Panteleev, with Charlene Verster taking the baton for a curtain-raiser during the final concert
The closing performance will also feature the world premiere of "The Silence of the Day", a song cycle by celebrated Cape Town composer Grant McLachlan.

These additional land-use rights will enable micro-developers to deliver affordable housing in townships, informal and lower-income suburbs at a far faster rate

It is a strange, almost unreal feeling to watch someone you love endure a grief so deep it seems to swallow them whole Two weeks ago, I watched my fiancé lose his mother, and I felt a pain unlike any I have ever known
It was not my mother, not my family, yet the weight of it pressed on me, leaving a hollowness I had never experienced before I wanted to reach out, to say the perfect words, to somehow ease the ache, but grief is not something that can be fixed with words And sympathy, however heartfelt, sometimes feels hollow when the loss is not your own I have been blessed to still have both my parents I have hugged them, laughed with them, shared the ordinary chaos of everyday life, and perhaps taken it all for granted Watching my fiancé navigate a world without his mother was a sudden, jarring reminder of how fragile life truly is Death does not send warnings, it does not schedule its arrivals at convenient times It comes uninvited, and the void it leaves is vast and echoing
Over the past week, I saw a man strong, capable, and loving confront the unimaginable: the absence of the one person who has been a constant presence in his life since birth His grief was raw and unfiltered, spilling into every corner of the room and touching everyone near him I wanted to comfort him, to hold him, to take away the sorrow, but I could only be there, quiet, present, a steady hand and listening heart
The pain was multiplied when I had to explain to our three-year-old that his “Ma” had gone to heaven The innocence of a child makes grief even more poignant His small face scrunched with confusion and disbelief “No,” he said repeatedly, “she went to work and will be back ”

Wanneer jy na Adriaan Nieuwenhuizen (39) van Parklands luister, besef jy gou dat sy lewenspad vol diens, geloof en hoop is Maar deesdae is daar een naam wat sy storie oorheers – Marvel, sy reddingshond, sy beste vriend en sy grootste seën
In Oktober 2024 het Adriaan ’n eenvoudige uitstappie na ’n aannemingsdag vir honde in Durbanville onderneem Hy het nie toe geweet dat sy lewe daardie dag onherroeplik sou verander nie
“Marvel het my nie eens ’n keuse gegee nie,” vertel hy met ’n glimlag “Hy het sommer self besluit ek is sy mens Hy het vir vyf ure lank net langs my gelê, terwyl ander honde om hom speel en blaf Hy het nie van my af beweeg nie – asof hy van die begin af geweet het ons behoort saam ” Daardie aand het Adriaan onmiddellik begin reëlings tref om Marvel huis toe te bring Drie weke later, op Swart Vrydag, was dit amptelik – Marvel het sy nuwe huis en sy nuwe lewe gekry

Adriaan het gevoel ’n nuwe begin vra ’n nuwe naam – iets wat sy krag, oorlewing en unieke gees kon vasvang Hy het op Marvel besluit, ’n naam wat wonder en miracle beteken “Hy is regtig my miracle dog, ” sê Adriaan “Hy het soveel trauma oorleef en tog sy liefdevolle hart behou Marvel is vir my ’n geskenk ” Marvel is meer as net ’n troeteldier –hy’s ’n karakter op sy eie Sy stokperdjies sluit in roadtrips, bal speel, zoomies in die park, knuffels, slaap en natuurlik lekkernye Hy is beskermend en dapper, maar ook snaaks en speels “Hy het ’n manier om mense te laat lag, selfs wanneer hulle hartseer is Marvel kan my gedagtes lees – net soos ek syne verstaan Hy is my veilige plek,” vertel Adriaan

Adriaan sê sy wortels lê in Bloemfontein, "maar in 2014 het ek ’n pad begin stap wat my lewe vir altyd sou verander " Hy het

Later daardie jaar tot in April 2015 was hy vir ’n paar maande in Pakistan, "waar ek die kans gehad het om eerstehands te sien hoe groot die impak van diens en omgee kan wees Ná my tyd daar het ek weer in Bloemfontein gaan stilstaan om dinge uit te sorteer en myself reg te kry vir die volgende hoofstuk van my lewe "
In April 2015 het hy die geleentheid gekry om Kaapstad sy nuwe tuiste te maak "My eerste stop was in Muizenberg, toe na Plattekloof om nader aan my werk te wees, en uiteindelik het ek my in 2016 in Parklands gaan vestig "
Dieselfde jaar het hy betrokke geraak by ’n kerk in Kaapstad "Daar het ek aanvanklik by die jeugbediening (gr 6 tot 9) begin werk, en later ook gemeenskapsprojekte Dit was juis deur hierdie betrokkenheid dat ek met TLC in Table View paaie gekruis het Ek is ongelooflik dankbaar vir tannie Colleen, die hoof van TLC, wat deure vir my oopgemaak het en my die kans gegee het om werklik deel te van die gemeenskap te wees TLC doen fantastiese werk - nie net in Table View nie, maar regdeur die Weskus-omgewing Ek het gesien hoe mense se lewens daardeur aangeraak en verander word," sê Adriaan As hy terugkyk, besef hy dat elke stap – van Bloemfontein, na sy sendingwerk tot Kaapstad – hom gevorm het in wie hy vandag is "Ek dra groot dankbaarheid in my hart, en ek glo vas dat wanneer jong mense of matrikulante betrokke raak by ’n uitreik soos TLC, dit nie net die gemeenskap raak nie, maar ook hul eie lewens op ’n diep en blywende manier verander "

He added that preparations were already underway for next year's tournament "We've launched a platform for a great tournament moving forward We have started with plans for next year and hope to make it even better
