Ontstoke inwoner van Kuilsrivier het ernstige klagtes aan die lig gebring oor die toestand van die plaaslike begraafplaas, wat sy beskryf as “erger as ’n varkhok” Sy woon nie ver van die begraafplaas af nie en sê die gemeenskap leef in vrees Volgens haar is die terrein en omliggende gebied besaai met rommel wat vanaf mense se huise daarheen gebring word Teëls word van mure afgebreek en mense gebruik die begraafplaas as slaapplek – selfs bo-op grafte

Alocal cycling development project recently received 10 new bicycles from the Western Cape Mobility Department, helping more young people access the joy of cycling Former cycling champion and administrator William Newman of Highbury launched Aspire Cycling in November 2024 under the auspices of local civic organisation, the Highbury Foundation
This non-profit community organisation is dedicated to empowering young people through cycling by providing them with skills, equipment, and opportunities
“This donation is a celebration of the provincial government’s commitment to sustainable, inclusive mobility With every new rider, we foster not only a healthier community but also support our collective journey towards a greener future It gives the youth an opportunity to experience the freedom and joy of cycling,” said Newman
The donation was made possible through the department’s Provincial Sustainable Transport Programme (PSTP) and was implemented on the ground by the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) and the Pedal Power Association (PPA) PROMOTINGACTIVELIFESTYLES

To date, more than 25 weekly sessions have sparked the joy and excitement of cycling for many youngsters
“Our approach includes equipping youngsters with essential cycling safety skills, providing safety gear, and introducing them to basic maintenance techniques,” said Newman
With these 10 new bicycles, Aspire Cycling is poised to increase its impact
Newman said they will continue to engage with local communities, presenting cycling skills and development sessions
Aspire Cycling is also seeking support to secure a safe venue in
the community to introduce the concept of grass track cycling
“All that is needed is a wellmaintained field to gradually introduce the youngsters to racing,” said Newman
There is also a need for transport to move bicycles to surrounding schools and communities as part of a mobile community cycling outreach programme

Voor die hek gee hy n paar blaffies om te laat weet hy is daar
"Hy hou ook nie daarvan om te lank te wag voor iemand die deur vir hom oopmaak nie Ek dink hy kom weg met baie dinge omdat hy so oulik is Ons kan ons nie n dag sonder hom voorstel nie," sê die skoolhoof, Nicolene Bothma, oor die vriendelike hond wat al sedert sy babadae by die skooltjie kuier

Beekeeping: definitely not a side hustle
Last summer, I fancied trying my hand at beekeeping
It wasn’t a random thought Almost everyone I knew had a side hustle, and my previous one, captioning for online streaming platforms, had been made redundant by AI, so I was on the lookout for something new But the idea first took hold when a swarm of bees unexpectedly took up residence in our wall
When life gives you bees, sell honey, I’d thought, but I quickly abandoned the idea, much to my husband’s relief That weekend I learned beekeeping isn’t a side hustle it’s a full-time job
The revelation began when my husband noticed a few bees buzzing around the air vent on our back wall
At first, we weren’t concerned There are always a few bees about, but eventually the vent began attracting an unusual amount of attention

We later learned from the beekeeper that the first bees hubby had seen were scouts

I wondered if they’d moved on, but the beekeeper arrived, opened the vent and revealed a hive the size of a large hat with hundreds of silent bees busily buzzing about their business

Hubby ignored me, suspecting they’d already made a hive inside This became a later point of contention
I phoned a beekeeper, who didn’t come cheap He advised us to keep an eye on things and send him videos so he could assess the situation He’d come by on Monday if it got worse

Sometime later, hubby went outside with his phone and returned shouting He’s not squeamish, but bees swarming are a freakish sight “I looked up and I just saw black,” he said
In his first attempt at filming, he got stung Undeterred, he tried again from
We’d caught them in time, he said We were lucky Removal only required taking off the vent
My youngest and I watched through the window as the beekeeper scooped the hive out by the handful and placed it into a box, loosely covered with a sheet
The trick, he explained, was catching the queen Once she was out, the workers high from the smoke he’d pumped inside would follow quietly Then he loaded the box into his car to take them away
A few foragers might return, he said, but they’d either leave or die
“Or just squirt them with Doom,” he added
Hubby posted the swarm videos on his status, and friends immediately began requesting honey I asked the beekeeper if we’d at least get any honey out of the ordeal
He cheekily replied, “If you want, next year I can come back and sell you the honey from your wall ”

Ek kan nie anders as om in sommige gevalle te dink dat ons oplossings het vir simptome en nie vir oorsake nie
Ek is betrokke by sekuriteitsforums en doen aktiewe patrollies in die sakekern en woongebiede in my omgewing en het gereeld te doen met wetteloosheid (en soms ook met misdadigheid)
Ek is van die opinie dat as daar geen gevolge is vir oortredings nie, daar geen verandering sal wees nie
Dit is reg en prysenswaardig om met die jeug te werk, die kerke betrokke te kry asook al die organisasies wat bystand bied aan hawelose mense Ek is egter van die opinie dat hierdie aksies met die grensgevalle tussen wetsgehoorsaamheid en wetteloosheid werk en dat voorkoming beter is as genesing Maar die geharde
misdadiger, die leermeester van die diegene wat neig na misdadigheid, moet boet vir sy (of haar) dade en die gevolge dra van sy of haar aksies, om ook as afskrikmiddel vir die gretige leerders en volgers te dien
Die man in die straat (en diegene wat patrollies doen vir sekuriteitsforums) het geen magte nie; hulle is ten beste die "oë en ore" van die gemeenskap wat hulle dien
Ons moet meer verwag van ons plaaslike geregsdienaars en wetstoepassers om hulle magte te gebruik om behoorlike ondersoeke te doen en te verseker dat diegene wat hul tyd buite die reg deurbring, die prys betaal deur skuldigbevindings in howe en die pyn van misdadigheid aan hul bas te voel Dit vra egter die toewyding en samewerking van die vervolgingsgesag, die howe en korrektiewe dienste wat ooglopend nie tans in staat is om hul mandate te eerbiedig nie

Warm welcome at Durbanville’s Hennies
With our recent visit to family in Durbanville it was such a blessing to meet a friendly person in the form of the security guard when we visited Hennies on Friday afternoon
Not only were we greeted politely but we observed many times how he would keep vagrants away from where we sat outside and cars
He even, while we were still there, assisted an
elderly gentleman changing his flat tyre while many persons just walked past
Thank you for your friendly and considerate manner as it's very rare in your profession
I didn't get the chance to greet you or compliment your good behaviour but I will definitely pop in again soon

The SATA Junior Touchboks of the Western Cape were welcomed back at Cape Town International Airport by family and friends on Tuesday, returning from the Atlantic Youth Touch Cup 2025, held in Ireland from 1 to 3 August
The national team, which includes players from the Western Cape, KwaZuluNatal and Gauteng, departed for Ireland on 27 July, following a meet-up in Johannesburg the day before South Africa competed across four divisions: u-18 Girls (bronze medal), u-18 Mixed (6th place), u-20 Ladies (bronze medal); u-20 Mixed (bronze medal)
In total, South Africa brought three bronze medals home, a commendable achievement on the international stage Over three days the teams faced-off against top-tier competition, including Ireland, England and Scotland
The bronze-medal match was played against Scotland on 3 August with South Africa clinching the win
Among the standout players was André Lee Geldenhuys, a 16-year-old from Scottsville, the same hometown as sports legends Bok Cheslin Kolbe and athletics champ Wayde van Niekerk
A rising star in his own right, André is a 100 m and 200 m sprinter, described by commentators as a “speedster” throughout the tournament
