Closed-circuit television

(CCTV) along Voortrekker Road play a vital role in solving crime This was one of the points highlighted at the Subcouncil 4 Safety Forum Meeting held on Thursday afternoon last week at the Parow Council Chambers by Supt Kevin Cole of the City's metro police service

Subcouncil 4 consists of four wards that covers the areas of Parow Valley, Goodwood, Ravensmead, Elsies River, Uitsig, Epping Industria and surrounds Cole said at the meeting the CCTV cameras along Voortrekker Road play an important role in crime investigation "We do get police detectives visiting our centre regularly Goodwood police stand out, maybe its because of the number of cameras along Voortrekker Road in their area, but also Elsies River and Parow police visit the centre to

request footage all the time We will continue to support them and supply them with footage "

He says the footage they supply is often positive and can be used as evidence in court

"We do know that things break sometimes, often the cameras are off, but we can assure you our maintenance team are always on board and they do repairs regularly "

He says as a centre they are very strict when it comes to individuals or institutions requesting footage "We have a process we follow "

Cole also told the meeting that the public and insurance companies are required to follow this process if they want to view any footage for claims purposes

Franchesca Walker, Subcouncil 4 chair, asked that a list be drawn up of all of the active cameras in the Subcouncil and provided to them at the next meeting She says her concerns are the hot-spot areas which

includes Francie van Zijl Drive and Norwood Road, and 35th Avenue and Owen Road in Elsies River

ANIMALCONTROL

Inspector Llewelyn Grove of the City of Cape Town's Animal Control Unit (ACU) also presented a report He says over the past 100 days their unit has received 177 complaints logged with the City from across Subcouncil 4 These include complaints relating to stray live stock, barking dogs, dangerous and vicious dogs and cruelty to animals The complaints were received between 28 April to Wednesday 6 August when his report was compiled, he says Reference was also made at the meeting to the recent successful

operation conducted in Goodwood where the police, the Department of Home Affairs, local neighbourhood watch structures and several other role-players in safety and security managed to execute 14 arrests Those arrested were undocumented people and one person who operated a problem building and harboured undocumented people, the meeting heard Walker thanked those who supported the operation, but says they were short staffed on the day She mentioned that as a Subcouncil they should not wait too long to plan another such operation and that they should keep the momentum going

Lt Col CS Kindo, Elsies River Police Station acting commander, also briefed the meeting on the crime in their area He says Elsies River is struggling at the moment with several shooting incidents taking place in the

Warm goed gebeur in koue winter

JOFOURIE JO FOURIE@NOVUSMEDIA CO ZA

area, including Epping Forrest, The Range and the Avonwood area Kindo says two to three months ago Clarke Estate used to be the area that stood out, but that this had changed He says robberies in the community are a big concern for the police "There is an ongoing trend with smash-and-grabs happening on a daily basis and its the same hotspots as before near Avonwood, and now also Epping Avenue We have deployed law enforcement to the area, but this is an ongoing crime taking place day to day, whether in the morning or afternoon and even up to late at night It is dark sometimes, but they still continue This is a huge challenge for us These criminals are flexible They see the police vehicle and move along, and if the vehicle is static nothing happens," he says Kindo says there has been a slight decline in these crimes, but that it will remain their main focus

CAWF embarks on mass sterilisation campaign

In a project funded by the City of Cape Town the Cape Animal Welfare Forum (CAWF) will embark on the latest mass sterilisation of animals

The campaign will take place in Subcouncils 4 and 6 this year, including areas like Ravensmead, Elsies River and Bellville South

Since 2013, 17 876 animals have been sterilised at a cost of nearly R8 million

The City's partnership with the CAWF to advance the health of animals and communities started in 2013, when 1 800 pets were sterilised in Dunoon and Brown's Farm Since then, the campaign has benefited pets in Khayelitsha,

Wesbank, Atlantis, Wallacedene, Tafelsig, the Deep South, Macassar and Eerste River

FUNDING

The City has made available R850 000 in funding for the latest campaign in Subcouncils 4 and 6

"The City is very proud to continue this long-standing relationship with our partners in the animal welfare sector So much good work has happened over the last 12 years, and we look forward to yet another successful mass sterilisation campaign

“Thank you so much to all of the member organisations who continue to lend their support to this initiative, and their commitment to making it a success," said the City’s Mayco member for community services and health, Francine Higham Six registered animal welfare

organisations will collectively sterilise 1 500 domestic pets between August and December this year

The project aims to:

. prevent unwanted litters ; . minimise the incidence of animal cruelty and abuse; . improve general standards of animal health and husbandry, thereby improving the health and welfare of people and . encourage responsible pet care and ownership through humane education

"This year, we celebrate 13 years of MASP, and send grateful thanks to the City of Cape Town for their continued support

“This campaign is a positive intervention in support of healthier communities, and will substantially reduce the instance of unwanted litters, thus reducing the heavy burden placed on welfare organisations around the metropole," said CAWF chair, Karen de Klerk

THINKING OUT LOUD

Beekeeping: definitely

not a side hustle

Last summer, I fancied trying my hand at beekeeping

It wasn’t a random thought Almost everyone I knew had a side hustle, and my previous one, captioning for online streaming platforms, had been made redundant by AI, so I was on the lookout for something new But the idea first took hold when a swarm of bees unexpectedly took up residence in our wall

When life gives you bees, sell honey, I’d thought, but I quickly abandoned the idea, much to my husband’s relief That weekend I learned beekeeping isn’t a side hustle it’s a full-time job

The revelation began when my husband noticed a few bees buzzing around the air vent on our back wall

At first, we weren’t concerned There are always a few bees about, but eventually the vent began attracting an unusual amount of attention

the side of the house and captured it:

hundreds of bees swarming like they were having a housewarming party

The sky had indeed turned black with bees

We later learned from the beekeeper that the first bees hubby had seen were scouts

A little incense might have prevented the rest from following Told him so!

That day, the house was abuzz literally and figuratively No bees made it inside, but their droning filled the air

By Monday, the buzzing had stopped

I wondered if they’d moved on, but the beekeeper arrived, opened the vent and revealed a hive the size of a large hat with hundreds of silent bees busily buzzing about their business

.. WHENLIFEGIVESYOU BEES,SELLHONEY,I’D THOUGHT,BUTIQUICKLY ABANDONEDTHEIDEA... ..

“Put some incense sticks in there,” I suggested Non-floral incense, we’d found, worked well to chase bees away With seven squeamish daughters most of them terrified of bees incense had saved us many a drama

Hubby ignored me, suspecting they’d already made a hive inside This became a later point of contention

I phoned a beekeeper, who didn’t come cheap He advised us to keep an eye on things and send him videos so he could assess the situation He’d come by on Monday if it got worse

It got worse

Sometime later, hubby went outside with his phone and returned shouting He’s not squeamish, but bees swarming are a freakish sight “I looked up and I just saw black,” he said

In his first attempt at filming, he got stung Undeterred, he tried again from

We’d caught them in time, he said We were lucky Removal only required taking off the vent

My youngest and I watched through the window as the beekeeper scooped the hive out by the handful and placed it into a box, loosely covered with a sheet

The trick, he explained, was catching the queen Once she was out, the workers high from the smoke he’d pumped inside would follow quietly Then he loaded the box into his car to take them away

A few foragers might return, he said, but they’d either leave or die “Or just squirt them with Doom,” he added

Hubby posted the swarm videos on his status, and friends immediately began requesting honey I asked the beekeeper if we’d at least get any honey out of the ordeal

He cheekily replied, “If you want, next year I can come back and sell you the honey from your wall ”

Warm welcome at Durbanville’s Hennies

With our recent visit to family in Durbanville it was such a blessing to meet a friendly person in the form of the security guard when we visited Hennies on Friday afternoon

Not only were we greeted politely but we observed many times how he would keep vagrants away from where we sat outside and cars

He even, while we were still there, assisted an

elderly gentleman changing his flat tyre while many persons just walked past

Thank you for your friendly and considerate manner as it's very rare in your profession

I didn't get the chance to greet you or compliment your good behaviour but I will definitely pop in again soon

Spoedkameras in Brackenfell-boulevard

‘Breast is best’ highlighted during World BreastfeedingWeek

The provincial health department celebrated World Breastfeeding Week recently by highlighting the importance thereof, especially during the first six months after a newborn baby is birthed

The week was marked between Friday 1 August and Thursday 7 August

In a statement issued on Wednesday 6 August the department said the theme for this year, “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems” recognises that no mother should have to do it alone

BREASTFEEDING:ALIFELINEFORFAMILIES

For the first six months of life, babies need nothing but breastmilk, a complete, living food that protects them from illness and helps them grow strong

Even after starting solid foods at six months, breastmilk continues to be a vital source of nutrients and comfort, the department said

Mischke Joseph, clinical nurse practitioner at the Durbanville Clinic, explains why “Babies who are exclusively breastfed for six months have stronger immune systems and a lower risk of infections, asthma, and obesity Mothers who breastfeed have a lower risk of certain cancers and benefit emotionally from the close bond with their baby ”

Crystal Jacobs, a registered dietitian at Tygerberg Hospital, concurs “Investing in breastfeeding is investing directly in the future health and prosperity of our

communities ”

Jacobs stresses the need for comprehensive access to support, education, and skilled counselling for new mothers

The City of Cape Town concluded its seasonal lifeguard assessment programme with 290 candidates competing for a spot on the summer roster last week

The assessment process ensures that only the most capable, skilled and safetyconscious individuals are selected to serve the public during the upcoming summer season

Over the past two weeks, aspiring lifeguards have been put through their paces at various swimming pools across the city, including Blue Downs, Retreat and Long Street Swimming Pools

"These assessments are more than just fitness tests - it’s about public safety, life-saving skills and a commitment to community service We salute the nearly 300 young people who stepped up to serve their communities The assessment process ensures that only the most skilled and safety-conscious individuals are appointed to help keep our pools and beaches safe We encourage residents to swim only where lifeguards are present this summer We’re proud to invest in building a strong team to help make our amenities safer for all," said Mayco member for community services and health, Francine Higham

"I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended today’s lifeguard recruitment at Muizenberg
