Pinotageheritage celebratedat Meerendal

Anew chapter for the historic Pinotage vineyard at Meerendal Wine Estate is unfolding as South Africa celebrates 100 years of Pinotage.

Planted in 1955, the Pinotage Heritage Block turns 70 this year, a testament to the resilience and character of old vines

With a renewed commitment to organic farming and sustainability, this vintage reflects a philosophy that honours the past while embracing the future It is a registered Heritage Vineyard with the Old Vine project

To mark the occasion, the 2023 Single Vineyard Heritage Block Pinotage wine was unveiled at a special event last week to signal a new era for one of Meerendal’s most historic vineyards

Says cellarmaster Wade Roger Lund, “I believe that this historical block has a special place in the history of Pinotage and the fact that these old blocks tend to promote the more elegant style of Pinotage is a bonus for me

“It matches perfectly with my philosophy for the block and Meerendal in general, softer and more refined texture and structure be ”

Guests were treated to an exclusive guided tasting of this landmark release, as well as the 2024 vintage that is still in the barrel The new label is a close replica of the 1969 Meerendal Pinotage label in the same font and colours

It was unveiled ceremoniously by Herman Coertze, owner of Meerendal and Wade Roger-Lund at the start of the tasting with the 2023 vintage bottle next to a recently recorked 1969 bottle

HAND-HARVESTED

The grapes were hand-harvested in the early morning to retain freshness and fermented in the traditional open-top fermenters with gentle punch-downs every six hours

Thereafter the wine was aged for 16 months in 45% new 300 litre French oak barrels and in second fill French oak barrels The wine was bottled unfiltered for maximum expression of flavour in September 2023

The wine has a deep ruby red with a purple rim

It has layers of dark berries, black cherries, and plums with hints of mocha, spice, and vanilla The palate is full-

The 750ml bottles will be selling for R1 250 from the Cellar door and at selected wine specialist shops

OLDESTPINOTAGEVINEYARD

Meerendal Wine Estate boasts the oldest Pinotage vineyard in the Wine of Origin (WO) Cape Town and Durbanville: its Heritage Block Pinotage is one of the four oldest remaining Pinotage vineyards in South Africa

Meerendal is also a founder member of the old vines project “Certified Heritage Vineyards'', established in 2016

Meerendal is one of the First Fourteen wine estates that was granted this appellation on 1 September 1973 when the new Wine of Origin legislation was instituted

It is only a handful of brands in South Africa with the proud tradition of more than 50 years since the bottling of its first vintage in 1969 selling wines uninterruptedly in the local and international markets

Meerendal has collaborated on a project in conjunction with Vititec, the South African leader for the improvement of vine plant material, which involves the identification, treatment and cleaning of any viruses of the best vines in the 1955 Heritage block

After six years the new planting material has been released and will be used to fill the gaps in the old block

In this way the DNA of the original vines from Professor Abraham Izak Perold, the founder of Pinotage, will be preserved

DK Sea Scouts spread kindness at orphanage

The Durbanville-Kraaifontein Sea Scouts (DK Sea Scouts) visited the House of Grace orphanage in Fisantekraal recently for a meaningful community outreach event

The orphanage, home to 22 children and two dedicated carers, was excited to welcome the scouts and cubs, who came together to share their time and resources

The scouts and cubs brought gardening tools such as spades, forks, and rakes to help create a vegetable garden for the children

“The idea was to teach the children the valuable skills of growing and maintaining their own food,” explains Carey-Leigh Bollaert, a committee member of DK Sea Scouts and organiser of the outreach Alongside the gardening supplies, the scouts and cubs also brought groceries, sweets, toys (both new and old) and clothes - all of which brought big smiles to the children's faces, she says Bryan Cloete, the scout group leader, led a brief educational talk with the

older children about planting vegetables, discussing the types of vegetables being planted, and explaining how to properly prepare the soil before planting

GREENFINGERS

The scouts, cubs and their families worked alongside the children to plant seeds in the garden, teaching them how to space and care for the plants Afterward, they enjoyed hot dogs, cool drinks and fun activities like playing on a jumping castle and joining a game of musical chairs

"The event was a perfect example of how small acts of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of others," says Rachel Johnson of DK Sea Scouts DK Sea Scouts is a community-based organisation committed to the growth and development of children through learning essential life skills and serving their community

Realising that City-owned properties can be leveraged for the benefit of all Capetonians, Council recently approved the sale and lease of 36 properties. The total sale transaction value is approximately R24,6 million, and the value of the lease transactions is an estimated R1,7 million per annum

Concrete opportunities

Among the transactions is the sale of a site of 13 ha in Atlantis Industria, intended for the construction of a cement-grinding facility to manufacture products for various building applications The business will support local jobs for an estimated 200 employees along with significant indirect employment opportunities in the logistics and related industries that will support the plant.

Another transaction involves the relocation of an inner-city-based business to Atlantis Industria to enable the development of a liquid-waste specialised storage, collection, recycling and refinery facility The liquid waste (mineral oil and wastewater) is largely collected from the Cape Town harbour, treated, and then resold to other industries such as textile, laundry and fishing, thereby contributing to the green, circular economy

People before profit Other sale transactions involve sites to be used for social care and community purposes, where the sale price has been significantly discounted The lease agreements, in turn, include the extension of a lease for the Maitland crematorium This will allow time for much-needed renovations to the site, and for its vital cremation services to continue

City’s switching to smart bills

Come 31 December 2025, the City will no longer send any printed municipal bills via ordinary post This follows a multi-year paperless billing campaign that has already seen more than 430 000 City customers signing up for emailed bills.

Here’s how

To make the switch to cyber, please send your account number and email address to either Revenue Eservices@capetown gov za or the SMS line 31223 before the end of the year From January 2026, the City’s call centre will assist account holders who have no email access To phone the call centre, dial 0860 103 089

Here’s why

Switching to email delivery offers many benefits. It reduces the risk of non-delivery makes it easy for customers to keep track of their bills, and gives them quick access to their accounts to use as proof of residence. Moreover, saving on printing and postage makes the City more financially and environmentally sustainable.

* Enter ‘Register for paperless bills’ in the search box on the City’s website. You’ll be directed to more information on the switch to e-bills, including frequently asked questions at the bottom of the page.

Why Capetonians can take heart from the latest crime stats

One of our pledges to Capetonians at the start of this term of office was to make Cape Town safer We cannot call this a city of hope as long as our communities suffer at the hands of criminals, and particularly the gangs and drug dealers who terrorise many of our neighbourhoods.

You probably also know that we have long called for our own municipal officers to be granted powers of investigation so that we can build cases that will see criminals successfully prosecuted and locked up This devolution of policing powers is a top priority for us But until that happens –and I am confident it will – we will not sit back and let criminals invade and take over our neighbourhoods.

There are very few substitutes in policing for ‘boots on the ground’ –visible officers deployed to high-crime areas One way in which we have been able to boost our visible policing is through the Law Enforcement Advancement Programme (LEAP), our partnership programme with Province.

It is one thing to deploy these extra LEAP officers to help the South

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE MAYOR

African Police Service fight crime but it is quite another to see the results of these deployments reflected in the crime statistics The recently released figures for October to December 2024 show that our LEAP officers are winning critical battles in the fight against gangs, drugs and firearm crimes Arrests for illegal firearms are up dramatically in crime hotspots where we have deployed these officers. Firearm arrests are up by 33% in Mitchells Plain, by 40% in Philippi East, by 70% in Delft, and by a massive 94% in Gugulethu That s a

significant number of guns taken off our streets. There is similar good news in terms of arrest numbers for drug offences in our LEAP deployment areas. Drug arrests are up by 43% in Delft, by 62% in Khayelitsha, by 114% in Gugulethu, and astonishingly, by 333% in Philippi East.

Of course, we would love to play a bigger role in securing prosecutions following these arrests through quality investigative police work. Nevertheless, it is still very encouraging to know that our LEAP officers are making such a clear impact. Every gun and unit of drugs taken off the streets makes Cape Town communities safer When you add the positive effect of our massive investment in crimefighting technologies such as gunshot detection, aerial surveillance, drones, security cameras and automatic licence plate recognition, there is no doubt that we are getting maximum value from our limited policing powers. Bit by bit, we are making steady progress towards a safer Cape Town for all

Geordin Hill-Lewis Cape Town Mayor

Western Cape dam levels slightly lower this year

The dam levels for Cape Town have dropped to 70,9% The City is aiming for an overall usage target of 650 million litres per day –which means Capetonians should try to use less than 105 litres per person per day

Protect our water resources by following water-wise guidelines. Residents and businesses are reminded that the permanent regulations contained in the City s Water By-law still apply across Cape Town, regardless of the

restriction level

Municipal water may be used in gardens only before 09:00 or after 18:00, but never to hose down paved areas

• Visit www capetown gov za/thinkwater or www capetown gov za/waterregulations to access the regulations

Water reuse works a treat at recreation facilities

An estimated 2,5–3,5 million litres of drinking water will be saved daily as treated-effluent irrigation connections are commissioned at a number of City recreation facilities across town. The Recreation and Parks Department and the Water and Sanitation Directorate are collaborating to switch City-owned sports fields and other recreation facilities to these new, more sustainable irrigation systems. Some 120 facilities have already been connected, with more earmarked.

Because you settle, we can serve

We thank every single resident who settles their municipal accounts every month. Income from municipal account payments is the primary funding stream for City services. That is why we have made payment as easy and convenient as possible

Chop-chop ways to pay

You can pay:

• at any Shoprite, Checkers, USave, Pick n Pay, PEP, Ackermans, Lewis, Top It Up, Woolworths or Spar outlet;

• online at www.easypay.co.za or www.powertime.co.za;

• via your internet banking platform by selecting the City of Cape Town as a bank-listed beneficiary on your bank’s website and using your ninedigit municipal account number as reference; or

• by scanning the QR code printed on your account (enter ‘QR code guideline’ in the search box on the City’s website for a step-bystep explanation if you’re new to code scanning).

* To make payment arrangements, email payment arrangements @capetown gov za To apply for indigent support, email indigent.relief@capetown.gov.za.

Safe and sustainable supply

Treated effluent is wastewater that has been purified at a wastewater treatment works (WWTW), where contaminants are removed before it is safely reused for irrigation and industrial purposes Through a pipeline network of almost 283 km, treated effluent is supplied from nine City WWTWs, namely Athlone, Bellville, Cape Flats, Kraaifontein, Macassar, Potsdam, Scottsdene, Zandvliet and

Melkbosstrand

A R65 million City investment in treated-effluent infrastructure includes the upgrade of Bellville pump station and the pipeline to supply Kuils River, the new Scottsdene pump station and phase 1 of its pipeline, as well as the new Zandvliet pump station

Makes financial sense, too Treated effluent is available at R7,62 per kilolitre for irrigation at golf clubs,

Temporary halt at Bayside canal site

Despite the temporary suspension of work on the Bayside canal upgrade in Milnerton, the City remains committed to the timely completion of this multi-million-rand project.

The civil contractor suspended operations in November 2024 due to contractual matters. Nevertheless, the project is already beyond the halfway mark. The remaining scope of work includes the construction of the upgraded stormwater canal to the primary sedimentation ponds, and the bypass canal connecting the secondary treatment channel to the Rietvlei. Efforts are under way to resolve the matter promptly and resume construction.

The canal upgrade is vital to cope with the increased stormwater flows resulting from rapid development in the catchment. The project also aims to combat pollution of the Rietvlei from various stormwater channels.

Canal’s gone quiet, for now: Legal processes are under way so that work on the Bayside canal upgrade can resume with minimal delays

A ‘hole’ lot of swing: The 18-hole Durbanville Golf Club hosted the prestigious Standard Bank Ladies Open in February This second stop of the eight-tournament Sunshine Ladies Tour season attracted over 100 professional and amateur golfers from more than 30 countries. The Durbanville golf course, which extends over 6 173 m from the tees, is the latest Cape Town course to host a major professional tournament The Mother City will also host the Investec SA Women’s Open at the Erinvale Golf Club in Somerset West in April.

A plan to ‘sea’ us through the dry times

In a further bid to augment Cape Town’s water supply, the City is planning to establish a desalination plant at Paarden Eiland. With the window for public participation now closed, the municipality will draw on residents’ input and the guidance of an expert panel to plan the plant.

Desalination is the technological process of removing salt and other minerals from seawater to make it safe to drink, and is used worldwide to supplement cities water sources In Cape Town, too, desalination forms part of the City’s New Water Programme to get us to a more waterresilient future, with a permanent plant planned for the Paarden Eiland area. Capetonians had a chance to have their say from January to early March.

Not compromising on quality

The City’s drinking water supply continues to meet and exceed the stringent SANS 241:2015 quality standards. And the water supplied by the desalination plant will be no different.

To ensure that Capetonians receive only top-quality water, the proposed Paarden Eiland plant will feature a comprehensive, multi-barrier treatment process. This will include reverse osmosis, using highpressure membranes to remove dissolved salts Another step will be ultraviolet oxidation, depending on the results of the seawater quality tests Additionally, environmentally responsible strategies have been outlined for discharging the brine generated by the desalination

Water, water, everywhere, and soon it’ll be safe to drink! An aerial picture showing the proposed location (highlighted in orange) of the permanent desalination plant in Paarden Eiland. The plant will have a water production capacity of 50–70 million ℓ/day

process back into the sea.

All of these treatment methods adhere to global best practice to ensure that the plant operates efficiently, without harming the environment. A comprehensive water quality monitoring programme

Park collab shows power of partnership

The City and Edge Church partnered to upgrade Sunnyside Park, a central gathering place for the people of Edgemead. Edge Church made a generous R2,7 million donation and will be assisting with park maintenance and management. The City contributed 30 trees and mulch, a water meter, as well as refurbished play equipment to enhance the space, creating a greener,

more inviting environment for residents. The transformed park was revealed to the public at the end of January It boasts planted beds, a landscaped berm with shrubs, synthetic grass and rubberised surfacing, new benches and picnic tables, enhancements to the dog park, laterite pathways, a dedicated play area for children, and improved access for all modes of transport.

Park’s got parking too Another key feature is the new public parking area This will improve traffic flow in surrounding streets, particularly during church services school dropoffs, and scout hall meetings The added convenience benefits park visitors, event attendees, and the broader community

to transform Sunnyside Park Together, they have turned the park into a vibrant spot for residents to relax.

‘TLC teams’ reach Atlantis rental units

The City’s community residential units (CRUs) at Neptune Castle and Coral Place in Atlantis received some focused attention in February during a ‘maintenance blitz’

Work included repairing gutters, concrete stairs and handrails, installing new sink cabinets and washing lines, removing graffiti on flats and refuse huts, and replacing broken windowpanes Area lighting and faulty plug sockets and light switches were also fixed and plumbing issues addressed, including the jetting of sewer lines

The maintenance blitzes are part of a broader drive to maintain and upgrade the City’s CRUs to ensure a safe and dignified living environment for tenants

On the same day, other key City services were also present in the Atlantis area, and teams offered support to residents at Saxonsea community hall and door-to-door

Fixers out in force: With over R1,2 billion allocated to the upkeep of the City’s community residential units (CRUs) in the coming years, the municipality’s ‘maintenance blitz programme’ attended to various essential upgrades at units in Atlantis in February

Now beetle’s boring into Durbanville trees

Durbanville is the latest Cape Town area where the destructive polyphagous shothole borer beetle is wreaking havoc on the Mother City’s urban forest. Here’s how you can help quash it.

Having been notified of a possible polyphagous shothole borer (PSHB) beetle infestation in Durbanville, the City deployed a team of monitors from its Invasive Species Unit to collect samples for DNA verification

Sadly, it was found that the boxelder and sweet viburnum trees had indeed been infested Several other trees in the vicinity, including English oak, liquid amber and Chinese cottonwood, were also found to have PSHB symptoms

Durbanvillers called to tree duty

Durbanville residents should urgently inspect all trees on their properties for symptoms (see sidebar) If any symptoms are present, please contact the City immediately: Go online at www capetown gov za/InvasiveSpecies, call the Invasive Species Unit on 021 444 2357 (weekdays, 07:30–16:00), or email invasive species@capetown gov za

The City will try to respond within ten working days to verify a reported sighting

Table View upgrade to restart

Having experienced significant challenges in 2024, work on the beachfront upgrade in Table View will hopefully recommence in April 2025

The agreement with the initial contractor had to be terminated in November 2024 due to ongoing performance issues and failure to meet construction milestones However, with a revised plan in place, the City will be appointing a new contractor who will focus on completing the stormwater outfalls, walkways, parking areas and ablution facilities

Staff doing the tree assessments will need access to private properties. Identify them by their City-branded clothing and official staff ID cards.

Beetle management in brief

The key guideline when you have an infested tree on your property is that it needs to be chipped (or cut into smaller pieces), sealed in refuse bags, and exposed to direct sunlight (solarised) – all on-site Solarisation is recommended for between six weeks (in warmer weather) and six months (in winter) Do not remove the chipped wood from the property, as this will spread the pest to other areas Alternatively, dump the chips in your compost heap, as the heat build-up will kill the beetle Infected wood chips may also be burned at an appropriate incineration facility

Do not use pesticides or fungicides, as these do not work to eradicate PSHB Ideally, seek assistance from service providers with a sound knowledge of PSHB management.

• Gumming blobs of goo coming out of the bark; oozing of liquid and gum from the beetle holes

• Entry and exit holes – small (2 mm) holes on the bark of the tree; shotgun-like scars developing around the holes

• Staining – brown or dark stains on the bark of the tree

Helping hands honoured: At its annual volunteer awards in December 2024, the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre recognised its volunteer corps, who contributed a staggering 65 697 hours in support of disaster risk management operations in 2023/24. Volunteers help ensure safety at events and facilities, perform risk assessments, coordinate services, and activate responders.

Among the helping hands acknowledged at the event were 25-year long-service awardees, Sanepter de Bruin and Juanita le Roux from Atlantis Milnerton volunteer Tristan Killian received three awards – for volunteer of the year, most hours in a calendar year (1 076 hours), as well as assistant unit leader of the year

This will help the City set up monitoring interventions to catch new invasions early on.

Vissershok sold for ‘higher’ purpose

The City’s Mayoral Committee has recommended to Council to sell its Vissershok site of some 32 ha of agricultural-zoned land to the Morningstar Flying Club

This includes the 5,6 ha the association has been leasing from the City for the past 30 years. During this time, they have developed it as an airfield with hangars and other facilities. The Morningstar Flyers Club will now be able to make long-term investments, to create improved infrastructure. This will unlock opportunities for skills development, employment and economic growth.

F1 in Suid-Afrika bly ’n groot droom

Teenage pregnancy a big crisis

South Africa faces a severe teenage pregnancy crisis, threatening the futures of young girls and the nation Around 4% of girls aged 14 to 19 reported pregnancies last year, with the rate rising dramatically with age In 2022/23 an estimated 150 000 girls aged 10-19 became pregnant, including over 2 700 girls aged 10-14, indicating widespread statutory rape

The consequences are devastating: school dropout, limited job prospects, poverty, and social stigma Early marriages further exacerbate their struggles Addressing this crisis requires understanding the complex factors at play

Girls in impoverished communities often lack access to essential sexual and reproductive health information and services

Comprehensive sexuality education is often lacking, leaving young people without accurate and age-appropriate knowledge about sex, contraception, and safe practices

Harmful gender norms and cultural practices can restrict girls' access to education and healthcare, while the normalisation of early sexual activity in some communities further exacerbates the problem

Even when young people possess knowledge about contraception, they may encounter significant barriers to accessing it due to cost, availability, or social stigma

Sexual violence against girls, particularly those under 18, is a major driver of teenage pregnancy, with cases of statutory rape alarmingly prevalent

Weak family and community support systems, coupled with a lack of open

communication about sex and relationships, leave young people ill-equipped to navigate these critical issues

Addressing this crisis demands a multipronged approach, requiring a concerted effort from all sectors of society:

. Implement age-appropriate sexuality education focusing on relationships, gender equality and self-respect

.Youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services, including contraception, counselling, and STI testing, must be readily accessible affordable and confidential

. Addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality is paramount Investing in education, creating economic opportunities for women, and empowering girls are crucial steps

.Strengthened laws and enforcement mechanisms are needed to protect girls from sexual violence, alongside robust support services for survivors

.Open communication between parents and children about sex and relationships is essential Community-based initiatives, involving parents, community leaders, and traditional healers, can play a vital role in shifting social norms

.Empowering girls through education mentorship programs, and life skills training will enable them to make informed choices about their lives and futures

South Africa’s teenage pregnancy crisis requires urgent, comprehensive action to protect the futures of its young girls and break the cycle of poverty and inequality FEZEKILE COTANI Soneike

Of selfs waar sinkgate is of ander werk begin is, of randstene weens boomwortels omgeval het ens En vir maande of jare net so deur inwoners aanvaar moet word?

My vraag is nou: Word alle polisie lede by hulle huise opgelaai en afgelaai?

Xaba digs quite deep to defend SPAR Grand Prix title

Defending series champion

Glenrose Xaba had to dig deep on Sunday morning 30 March, but she managed to hold off a challenge from Ethiopia's Selam Gebre to win the opening leg of the 2025 SPAR Grand Prix in Green Point

Following overnight rain the skies cleared just before the start of the 10 km contest, offering near-perfect conditions for the elite field aside from a bit of wind

Pushing the pace hard at the start, Xaba (Boxer Athletics Club) pulled two athletes with her in the early stages - Gebre and another Ethiopian, Meseret

Fita (both representing Nedbank Running Club) - as they opened a gap on a larger chasing group

Approaching halfway, however, 41-year-old Lebo Phalula (Boxer) put in an incredible surge to drag some of the chase group with her as they closed the gap on the leaders

The pace eventually took its toll, and the athletes dropped off one by one until only Gebre was left hanging on to Xaba's shoulder in the closing stages

Having led from the gun, Xaba kicked with less than a kilometre to go and finally managed to shake off Gebre as she drew clear for a hard-fought win in 33:13

Gebre finished five seconds off the pace in 33:18, while Xaba's training partner Karabo Mailula (Tuks Athletics) stepped on the podium at a SPAR Grand Prix race for the first time in her career, crossing the finish line in third place in 33:35

Phalula finished in an impressive fifth position behind fourth placed Cacisile Sosibo (Boxer)

Russian born Australian Ola Firsova, who now lives in Stellenbosch, finished eighth

The race, which attracted a massive field of 16 000 participants, started 30 minutes late after the race safety

committee took a decision to ensure all possible safety issues had been solved on the route

Xaba admitted the late start had affected her performance, but she was pleased to have opened the defence of her series title with a victory

"I'm happy with the race but I'm a little disappointed with my time," she said

Xaba holds the South African 10 km record of 31:12

"We stood too long at the start and my muscles were stiff and my body didn't respond very well, but I'm glad I was able to run a good race and stay focused until the end "

Gebre was also satisfied with her result, just two weeks after she finished second at the Rome Marathon in Italy in 2:28:22

"To be honest, I need a little more time to recover from the marathon, and I felt the wind was a bit harsh, but I did my best and I'm happy with the result," Gebre said

Phalula went on to finish fifth overall, winning the Over-40 category in 34:14, just 13 seconds outside her own South African veteran's record

Caster Semenya running in her second official 10 km race finished in a credible 14th position
