The convicted “Griekwastad killer” is making his second attempt at freedom 13 years after the horrific events that shocked South Africa. The now 29-year-old convict will face the parole board again following a failed bid in 2024, bringing the tragic events of Good Friday 2012 back into sharp focus
The brutal killings remain etched in public memory: Deon, Christel, and young Marthella Steenkamp were murdered in their home at the Naauwhoek farm The perpetrator, then just 15 years old, is serving an effective 20-year sentence for murder, rape, and defeating the ends of justice
As the Department of Correctional
Services reviews his case, haunting expert testimony from his 2014 trial casts a long shadow over his potential release The parole board faces a crucial dilemma regarding the offender’s psychological profile During sentencing, defence and state experts were sharply divided
Dr Larissa Panieri-Peter, a forensic psychiatrist, suggested the killings were a disorganised “shambles” requiring cognitive therapy However, state psychologist Major Bronwynn Stollarz painted a far darker picture
Stollarz identified “emerging psychopathic tendencies,” highlighting the extreme violence described as “overkill” and the calculated coldness the teenager displayed Most damning was his persistent denial of guilt
Stollarz’s analysis concluded: “Rehabilitation cannot occur if a person does
not take responsibility for their actions”
Former Judge President Frans Kgomo reinforced these concerns in his judgement, noting the chilling detail that the boy appeared to smile when news of his arrest was broadcast on radio The court determined the motive was self-preservation – killing the adults to conceal the rape of their daughter
According to Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo, all necessary interventions have been completed and the applicant’s profile will now be assessed by the parole board
South Africa’s parole system emphasises restorative justice A victim-offender dialogue has already taken place in Upington, where the offender’s willingness to accept responsibility may prove decisive in the board’s final decision

Daarsonder gaan jy opnuut jou heiland leer ken
Daar heers ’n oomblik se stilte “Fisiek gaan dit regtig baie goed” Hierdie vreemde antwoord laat my wonder. Ek glimlag. “As dit fisiek so goed gaan, hoe gaan dit met jou ander dele?”
Ek hoor hoe hy sug
Emosioneel Fisiek Geestelik Finansieel

And the girls in their Sunday dresses tells the story of many women, and the story of sisterhood regardless of differences that may be present
This iconic play by well-known South African writer Zakes Mda was on stage at the historic Hull Street Theatre in De Beers, Kimberley, from 4 to 7 December
Director Evelyn Maruping says that, since the play was written in 1988, they adapted the script here and there to make it more relevant for contemporary audiences
Two characters, The Lady and The Woman, wait in line, spending long days together righting the world’s wrongs and leaning on each other in more ways than one
This play is described as a humorous commentary on social and economic inequality, and an observation of relationships that can be formed in unlikely places
Starring in the lead roles were Retlametswe Moses and Bonolo Nteo, with Poppy Thebe and Nthabiseng Pasmeni in supporting roles This is a women ’ s play, about women, performed by women, and directed by a woman

Maruping was approached by the artistic director of the Hull Street Theatre, Thabo Mothlabi, to direct the play For Maruping, a prominent digital media entrepreneur, this was a dream come true Since childhood she loved performing in front of an audience, and only in high school did she put a name to it: theatre

Partners and funders of an inschool breakfast programme serving approximately 4 500 young learners in and around Kuruman, visited participating schools one year after implementation The aim was to review progress and strengthen collaboration to ensure the initiative continues to meet learners’ needs
The programme is delivered by Kathu Solar Power and the Tiger Brands Foundation in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, and complements the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) which supports learners in quintile 1 to 3 schools across the country
During visits to the Bankhara-Bodulong, Gaegake, Mahikaneng, Maruping, and Seupe primary schools, principals shared the positive impact on learner attendance, punctuality, concentration, and overall wellbeing – particularly for children facing socio-economic challenges
“Had it not been for this programme, we would possibly be counting an increased learner dropout rate from our school This breakfast programme has not only benefitted the learners in terms of
“Directing this play feels like the rebirth of Evelyn It awakened something in me that I had forgotten,” she says The Hull Street Theatre, built in 1899, experienced decades of decline, neglect and vandalism In 2024 local artists, community members and businesses launched significant restoration efforts to revive this provincial heritage site
The theatre’s restoration symbolises renewal, mirroring Maruping’s artistic rebirth through this production Despite ongoing restoration challenges, the space embodies creative potential and community revitalisation, and all those involved in the play wish to foster a love for theatre amongst the Kimberley audience
The opening night of the play on 4 December was described as “the production burst onto the Hull Street Theatre stage with a force that can only be described as revolutionary It was bold It was unflinching It was utterly magnificent
“This opening night revealed a production that is both timeless and urgently now – a piercing commentary wrapped in unforgettable performances, sharp humour, and emotional truth The theatre pulsed with laughter, tears, and moments where the entire audience held its breath”

Moses and Nteo’s performance was described as “truly breathtaking, raw Their chemistry on stage is electrifying, and they have brought unique emotional honesty to these beloved characters”
A Kimberley resident, who attended the play with her daughter, said it was their first theatre attendance, and it did not disappoint
“We didn’t know what to expect, as with everything being done for the first time, but we had decided to go in fully open to the entire experience Which was the best decision we could’ve made It was an experience like none other”

After months and sometimes years of waiting for specialised care, children born with cleft lip, cleft palate and other reconstructive needs have received surgery to improve feeding, speech and development
This was made possible through the Smile Foundation in partnership with Smart Business Systems (SBS) on their return to the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital (RMSH) in Kimberley for a Mini Smile Week The initiative brought life-changing reconstructive surgery to children across the Northern Cape
Taking place on 24 and 25 November and on 1 and 2 December, the week marked a long-awaited turning point for many families who travelled from rural towns It offered them relief and renewed hope amid financial and emotional strain

starting the day on a non-empty stomach, but it also encourages learners to attend school early, regularly and it has also assisted, encouraged and motivated even learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to cope with their everyday morning school activities,” explained principal B G Magome of Bankhara-Bodulong
By partnering with the foundation, Kathu Solar Park’s beneficiary schools receive highly nutritious, fortified porridges made from sorghum, maize, or oats These meals are prepared by trained food handlers in clean, well-equipped kitchens to ensure quality and safety Each learner is provided with their own plate and utensils, allowing them to enjoy their meal with dignity The porridges meet World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for optimal micronutrient levels and help address key health challenges
Both Kathu Solar Park and the Tiger Brands Foundation remain committed to supporting learner wellbeing, strengthening educational outcomes, and ensuring that every child begins the school day with the nutrition they need to thrive
Young patients from Kimberley, Pampierstad, Upington, Douglas and Steinkopf were treated by specialist surgeons Dr Maria Giaquinto Cilliers and Dr Gert Steyn, alongside their skilled multidisciplinary team Giaquinto Cilliers has served at the RMSH since 2005
The hospital’s chief executive, Mkhululi Ntintelo, highlighted the impact of the partnership between the RMSH and Smile Foundation, which has provided surgery to more than 200 children with congenital abnormalities and burn-related deformities since 2017
The RMSH remains the Northern Cape’s only tertiary centre for plastic and reconstructive surgery Its burns

More than 640 learners gained valuable insights into understanding themselves, identifying their interests, and mapping out their academic and career journeys through a series of engaging training modules and interactive sessions
These Gr 9 learners of six local high schools across the Sol Plaatje and Dikgatlong Local Municipalities participated in the Career Guidance and Leadership Development Programme, which aims to equip young people with the confidence and knowledge needed to make informed subject and career choices
The programme focused on three key developmental modules, namely “Knowing Yourself” , “Subjects and Career Choices” , and “Journey Mapping” , each designed to promote self-discovery, informed decision-making and goal-setting
“It is important that our beneficiary learners are guided well into making the right subject choices in Gr 9, as this directly influences eligibility for tertiary education and future career paths By fostering self-awareness and equipping learners with practical decisionmaking tools, we are investing in long-term success of youth across our beneficiary communities,” said

Growing up in a family where baking and cooking were part of daily life, it was only natural that the 25-year-old De Aar local, Richardene Frolick, would one day start her own bakery
Her business, Nonhles Treats, has been baking and selling cakes and biscuits since 2022 and has now been selected as a beneficiary of a three-year enterprise development programme
Through this support, Frolick intends to strengthen her small business and is hopeful that she will soon be able to move into a more suitable and secure premises
Her vision for the bakery goes beyond her own success
She hopes to create two new jobs within the next year, helping to offer opportunities for other young people in her community
She also plans to expand her offering to include bread and rolls, alongside the popular cakes and biscuits she is already known for in De Aar and the surrounding areas
“I started baking during lockdown after my family encouraged me to turn my natural talent into something more
“I was unable to complete my studies due to the pandemic and financial constraints, so I had nothing to lose,” shared Frolick, when speaking about her decision to pursue a future as an entrepreneur
“Until now, I have grown the business with very little Becoming a beneficiary of this programme means I can expand my production, upgrade my equipment, and work towards longterm goals that will make Nonhles Treats more sustainable,” she added
Over the next year, the programme will support the establishment of a formal business premises, using a combination of a containerised structure and a small building
By the end of the three-year period, the goal is for Nonhles Treats to meet the required food-handling and processing compliance requirements, strengthen operational skills, secure key certifications, grow revenue, and build a stable financial footing

“We are inspired by Richardene’s commitment to building her business Since its launch, it has operated from a temporary space on local church land Even in these limited conditions, she has consistently improved the quality of her products and grown her customer base beyond De Aar,” said Harrisinah Theka, economic development manager at De Aar Solar Power, which funds this development programme for local enterprises
“As Richardene moves into this next phase, we are confident that the structure and support offered through the programme will give her the foundation she needs to grow a sustainable business
“Small enterprises like Nonhles Treats are at the heart of local development, and we look forward to seeing the impact her growth will have in the community,” Theka concluded
