Kuns van gesigverf bring glimlagte

By markte, skoue en ander feestelikhede is dit Michelle le Grange se doelwit om ’n glimlag na ’n kind se gesig te bring. Of ’n feetjie, meermin, skoenlapper – of watter sprokieskarakter ’n kind van droom.
Le Grange is ’n gesigverfkunstenaar en woon saam met haar man, Pieter, en kinders in Ritchie naby Kimberley. Hier floreer hul kinders in die landelike omgewing. Hulle het lank in Kimberley gewoon voor hul verhuising na Ritchie.
Sy is al byna vyf jaar lank ’n gesigverfkunstenaar en het deur vriende die eerste keer by ’n mark haar dienste as gesigverfkunstenaar aangebied. Vandaar het dit uitgebrei, en het sy onder meer speletjies ingebring.
“Die speletjies kan kinders en selfs ouers geniet terwyl die kinders hul beurt in my verfstoel afwag. So het dit gebeur dat ek vir ander geleenthede en kinderpartytjies bespreek word.”
Behalwe gesigverf en speletjies is tydelike aanspuit-tatoeërmerke en -haarkleur ook meestal by haar stalletjie beskikbaar. Wanneer moontlik, woon haar man saam met haar ’n mark by en hanteer die aanbied van speletjies en ander aktiwiteite.
“Seuntjies wil meestal superhelde geverf hê, en dogtertjies van blomme, skoenlappers, prinsessies tot unicorns. Soms verg dit baie detail, ander kere is dit meer eenvoudig.”
Wanneer ’n kind in haar verfstoel sit, wil Le Grange dit so spesiaal moontlik maak. Sy het ’n aanvoeling
ARTISTRY CONNECTS
In commemoration of Africa Month, observed during May, the William Humphreys Art Gallery (Whag) in Kimberley presents a Double Bill exhibition featuring new works by Usen Obot and Bongi Bengu.
The exhibitions, titled Spirits & Souls and My Cup Runneth Over, are curated by Whag’s chief curator, Chepape Makgato.
The curatorial vision of this year’s double-bill emphasises spiritual depth, cultural memory, and artistic persistence across generations and geographies.
Double Bill presents a symphony of spirit and self, connecting two artists whose practices embody ancestral continuity, personal reflection, and cultural inquiry.
In Obot’s masculine ancestral energy and Bengu’s graceful feminine strength, a powerful interweaving of sacred opposites that honour Africa’s spiritual imagination are witnessed.
“These exhibitions resonate with the call of Africa Month: to return, to reflect, to reconnect,” says Makgato.
The exhibitions commence on 22 May and will run until 30 June.

Le Grange het nooit kuns as skoolvak geneem nie, maar kunstigheid is ’n familie-eienskap.
“My een ouma kon goed teken en het porseleinpoppe en -beeldjies gemaak en geverf. My ander ouma het lapverfgoedjies gemaak en kan die mooiste troukoeke maak. Ek het nog altyd daarvan gehou om grimering te doen, op seildoek te verf, skeppend te wees en kleurvolle goed te maak.”
Sy het aan die Hoërskool Langenhoven in Riversdal matrikuleer en tydens haar eerste jaar by die Northlink-kollege in die Wes-Kaap, was grafiese ontwerp en bemarking van haar hoofvakke. In haar tweede jaar het
sy onder meer mode-ontwerp as vak gehad. Die uitrustings wat Le Grange na markte en partytjies aantrek, het sy 80% self gemaak of gemanipuleer om ’n spesifieke voorkoms te skep. Hoewel sy meestal kunswerke op kindergesiggies doen, vra ouer kinders en volwassenes soms vir 'n kunswerk op ’n arm, skouer, rug of halslyn.
“Soms geniet ’n mamma of pappa so ’n oomblik met hul kinders, en kry ook 'n kunswerk. Of kinders daag hul ouers uit om dit te laat doen.”
Sy was onlangs by ’n motorfietsbyeenkoms, en veral volwasse vroue het by haar stalletjie aangedoen.

Le Grange vertel dat dit jammer is dat die bedryf as gesigverfkunstenaar nog nie gereguleer word nie. Gesigverf word op sensitiewe en jong velletjies gebruik en dit is daarom noodsaaklik dat die kunstenaar die regte gesigverf gebruik. Higiëne speel ook ’n rol en die regte prosedure moet met die aanwending van gesigverf gebruik word.
Sy sê dit gebeur dat mense wat as gesigverfkunstenaars optree, onder meer verf en blinkers gebruik wat vir “crafts” bedoel is, en nie vir gesigsvelle nie. Deur die verkeerde verf te gebruik, kan die kliënt onder meer ’n
veluitslag of -irritasie ontwikkel. Die produkte wat sy gebruik, word van die buiteland ingevoer en voldoen aan internasionale kosmetiese standaarde. Le Grange is al byna vyf jaar lank by die maandelikse Market for Charity in Kimberley betrokke. Dié mark is voorheen by die Gum Tree Lodge aangebied, en vind nou by die McGregor-museum plaas.
Sy is ook vir kinderpartytjies beskikbaar en vir geleenthede in onder meer restaurante. Le Grange werk meestal in Kimberley en omliggende gebied, en was die afgelope drie jaar by die Hopetown-skou betrokke.
