Aankoms van eerste 1 200 mm-grootmaatpype verwelkom

‘Dinge gebeur in Riverton’

as ’n interim-maatreël herstel.

’n sogenaamde tegniese verslag ingedien.

Hul regsverteenwoordiger was in die hof.

jaar aangemeld.

‘TREE IN’

Begrip troef verslawing

HELENA BARNARD

Tydens weeklikse sessies vind telkens ’n ander program plaas.

Almal leer iets by ander.

Truth seems to be in eye of the beholder

A flamboyance of flamingos on Kamfers Dam outside Kimberley. The Diggers Memorial in Oppenheimer Garden in the Diamond City, with five life-sized bronze figures holding a diamond sieve through which water from the fountain cascades.

Photos of these two attractions in its former state, on a recent media briefing report from the Sol Plaatje Municipality, was the cherry on the cake of a string of absurd observations over the past few days.

The irony of the use of these (old) photos by the municipality is that both attractions turned into a sight for sore eyes under its governance.

For several years, flamingos no longer find Kamfers Dam an ideal habitat due to the mismanagement of effluent water into the dam.

The paradise for thousands of migrating flamingos, and a lovely site to visit, is now a growing foulsmelling body of polluted water.

Regarding the Diggers Memorial: In 2020 its metal sieve was stolen; in 2022 one of the bronze figures was removed and parts of it cut off –most possibly to sell as scrap metal.

The integration of the Oppenheimer Garden into the campus of the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) gives hope, but Steve Lunderstedt, historian and writer, once wrote: “What has been destroyed cannot be undone.”

Also, the cause of the abrupt postponement of the budget speech in Parliament; France’s justice minister’s announcement that inmates may no longer get facial massages; and an article by an early childhood education specialist stating that an increasing number of children are unable to hold a pencil, sit up straight, make friends, or have face-to-face social interaction due to the overuse of screen time are some of the other recent observations causing an uneasy feeling. It is then that the article on why some people believe the earth is flat and global warming a myth, makes perfect sense. “Nee, regtig. Mamma verwag te veel van die mensdom.”

Ek skud my kop.

“Good morning!

I’ll show you a rainbow,” en sy swaai ’n boog in die lug met haar arms.

Learners equipped to combat crime, social ills

In a first for the Northern Cape, nearly 200 learners of the Tetlanyo High School and the Emang Mmogo Comprehensive School in Galeshewe, Kimberley, completed the Safer South Africa Foundation’s (SSAF) flagship Criminal Justice Programme (CJP).

The CJP educates high school learners on the consequences of crime, while fostering partnerships between young people, law enforcement, and community stakeholders to combat crime and social ills. It empowers youngsters

with knowledge about the justice system and fosters a culture of responsibility, anti-crime, and antigangsterism.

Retired Lt. Col Abraham Tsoone, the SSAF’s newly-appointed Northern Cape coordinator, expressed his pride in the programme’s debut in the province during the certificate ceremony at the Tetlanyo High School on 20 February.

“The Kimberley area is plagued by serious social challenges such as gangsterism, bullying, drug and alcohol abuse, and contact crimes

like assault. These problems are deeply embedded in the social fabric of the community and often spill over into our schools.

“This is a proud moment to see young people commit themselves to turning the tide,” said Tsoone.

Through the CJP, the SSAF collaborates with stakeholders in the criminal justice sector. These include the South African Police Service (SAPS), Correctional Service, Traffic Department, Department of Basic Education, and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC)

SPU showing resilience in narrow defeat Fighting till the end

A last-minute try sealed the win of 22 – 20 for the visiting team of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in the Varsity Shield encounter with the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) on a wet Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley on Friday, 21 February.

In the first half, SPU struggled with discipline, conceding multiple penalties, but managed to get on the board before halftime with a Khanya Kama penalty, making it 8 – 3 at the break, as is stated in a press release from FNB Varsity Shield.

SPU came out firing in the second half, with Tyron China diving over the try line in the 41st minute, and Kama’s conversion putting them ahead by 10 – 8.

CPUT quickly responded, reclaiming the lead at 15 – 10.

Aviwe Mpepo’s try and another Kama conversion in the 52nd minute saw SPU regain control by 17 – 15. Kama extended their lead to 20 – 15 with a penalty in the 57th minute. With time running out, CPUT’s persistence paid off as the whitewash was crossed in the 74th minute, and a conversion secured a 22 – 20 victory.

Romeo Syfers, chairperson of the Frances Baard Rugby Region, commented on behalf of the executive committee, that the SPU team shown resilience, despite the narrow defeat in challenging weather conditions against CPUT.

“As the rain fell, the teams stepped onto the field, but it was clear that the weather would play a pivotal role in the match. The SPU players, who are not accustomed to such conditions, struggled with handling errors early on, which proved costly as CPUT capitalised on their opportunities.

Despite this, the spirit of SPU shone through,” Syfers commented, saying as the game progressed, SPU began to find its rhythm.

“We showed a lot of heart today,” said team captain, Sello Maketlo.

“While we didn’t get the result we wanted, we learned a lot about ourselves and what we need to improve. I’m proud of how we fought until the end.”

Mpepo was announced as the FNB Player that Rocks.

On the field were SPU players Mpepo, China, Kama, Jan Potgieter,

2025: Year of women’s chess

Chess South Africa (Chess SA) declared 2025 as the Year of Women’s Chess, saying this initiative will be implemented with the support of the World Chess Federation’s (FIDE) Women’s Commission.

According to Chess SA, women’s chess has been historically neglected, recognising that its vision “Chess Belongs to Everyone” cannot be fulfilled unless a more inclusive, safe, and supportive environment for women and girls in chess is created.

Gayton McKenzie, minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, emphasised the importance of gender equality in sport, stating that for too long women have struggled to be seen in sports.

A study in 2008 revealed that female chess players often experience lower expectations from peers and coaches, leading to decreased
